What is Game Sense? (and How it's Used in Overwatch)

  • Hey guys, Tomato here (Or Mato for short) There were a few comments on my "Overwatch is for Boomers" video that said my gameplay doesn't look GM. Well I am GM. So, how is it that I made it there if my gameplay doesn't look that great? The only thing I can think of is my game sense, but I'll be honest, I don't know what GM gameplay is even supposed to look like. Are we only using top content creators as a metric? I don't think that's a good idea. There's probably tons of players out there that aren't very flashy with their gameplay in GM, and that was part of the point of my Boomer video. If you hone other skills, you can climb. So here's a sort of guide to how game sense is used. Anyway, let me know what you all think! Thanks.

    I actually love this playstyle, I like to play for very long periods of time and my hands sometimes hurt after a bit when playing heros that need more mechanical skill.

      My issue when playing someone like Bap or Lucio, for example, is that I'm always thinking, "What more could I be doing right now?" And then I'm basically paralyzed in thought and play terribly.

    • @truntfundle9437
      @truntfundle9437 9 месяцев назад +4

      I felt that for bap. For Lucio I often do my best to make speed happened when we need to dodge or spread out or track someone down or if I need to get to someone who needs healing. Otherwise I’m always healing and trying not to be hit while shooting semi randomly at the enemy team and booping anyone who gets too close when my boop is available. I can tell I haven’t reached my limit yet but as for being mechanically gifted? I am not, so I may never scale outside the normie ranks but I still have fun and I think that’s all that matters at the end of the day.

    There is nothing more satisfying in gaming, than to successfully predict an ult multiple seconds in advance and deny it

    "In conclusion, we all play like AI and bronze players are the real grandmasters" xD
    Nice video though :)
    Game sense is such a weird thing, and it really will depend on so many factors. Your lobby peers, your successes and failures in certain actions, your insight and experience, your ability to read human behaviour, your ability to translate what you want to do in your head with the required inputs. So broad and complex, and something you need to cater and nurture over time.
    And anyone is free to theorycraft, the results usually speak for themselves xD

    As a high bronze low silver player, thank you. You explained it in such a way, with that reaper, analogy, that I actually understand what people mean by game sense. Thank you, thank you.

      Your main issue isnt game sense but terrible mechanics
      Improve your aim

      @@chungusultimate i mean... i appreciate the advice but that's not my point. I play overwatch so I also watch overwatch videos. Not knowing what people mean by game sense in those videos was what I got help with. I wasnt insinuating that I expect to get to gold with it. I'm not bothered by being high bronze. I'm not looking to climb. I just want to understand what people are talking about.
      I just switched from console to pc and have to work... I don't have time to dedicate time to climb or aim improve.

    • @chungusultimate

      @Sprinic Game sense is understanding the flow of the game.
      Where to position yourself, when to engage or disengage, knowing how to counter pick, understanding team play, understanding team compositions..
      Mechanics are your own skills and enacting them.. such as aim and movement

    This always gets me when I meet genjis sadly.
    I think "He expects me to insta-sleep/nade" so I wait a few seconds, and then I do it, right into the deflect that he clicked right after I had waited the same amount of seconds like him.

    • @MatoTM
      @MatoTM  9 месяцев назад +9

      I usually nade the ground instead of using sleep dart. If you get the right angle, it still hits the Genji through deflect and also heals you a bit.

    • @martinthomas2520
      @martinthomas2520 9 месяцев назад +9

      Even the best Ana players always go for nade first when 1v1’ng a Genji (on the ground ofc because deflect cannot stop that) then either sleep dart or try to finish him off by hitting your shots. Easier said than done but you have to train yourself in order to survive 1v1 situations with flanking dps players, otherwise you’re going to get constantly harassed and dove on

      as for what you could do better there, you'd need more info, but I would've considered moving up the ramp to the spot by the mega at 4:43. your team is already pushed up well enough for that to be a good place to be (you'll be safe there and get good offensive and healing value, it doesn't matter if you're the last alive, you can just leave/reset), and it's also unlikely you'll beat a good pharah in a 1v1, which effectively forced your mercy to abandon the rest of your team for awhile. the main reason that your awareness here paid off (alongside your ending positioning) was the enemy pharah not using concussion blast to make her movement less predictable (this making it easy to hit a sleep) or to just dive bomb in on you quickly. if you were by that mega, she wouldn't be able to reach you without alerting your entire team, and you would've been able to take her out safely if she went in on your perceived backline.

  • @fettbub92
    @fettbub92 9 месяцев назад +9

    Note to metal rank players watching this. When you pay attention to these things more, you will get accused of cheating. Many low rank players dont use awareness, and cant grasp hearing them coming or predicting their moves.

  • @Chrispyy__
    @Chrispyy__ 9 месяцев назад +6

    This is EXACTLY how i climbed. For instance, when i play Ana against genjis who like to dive me, the first thing i do is shoot them until i bait out deflect and once that happens I turn to the side, look down, and throw my nade on the floor because 9/10 the genji will be right in my face deflecting and i wont take damage from the deflect that couldve possibly hit my nade if i threw it at them. It works most of the time granted i dont get comboed.

    Great video! I’m maining Kiriko and Ana to climb and just reached plat 5 support. I’ve also felt that game sense is just something that comes with time and is why I’ve been grinding out comp games to improve. What I’ve taken from a few guides is that it isn’t about having god aim to carry yourself, but more about knowing what is the best plays and when/why to do/use something.

    In overwatch 2 part of game sense is also ult. tracking. Always be aware of who used what and who hasn't used anything. There is a certain period of time where each character will no doubt have an ult. If you know a charcter most likely has it you can always play around it.

    I play a lot of Sombra, when there's an enemy Sombra constantly going for my healers I like to wait for them and get the easy elim. It drives me crazy when I'm healing but the rest of the team isn't thinking like this. Honestly it's not just game sense that's lacking it's common sense. I find that players who have good aim and nothing else end up in my rank (plat) and never learn how to do anything else. They might have a lot of damage done and the most kills but also a lot of deaths and the kills they get aren't high value. Then when we lose they say "it's not my fault. I got the most kills". Ignoring that the whole team died because they were flanking or trying to solo instead joining the team fight. Or when you see your teammates get tunnel vision and chase an enemy that turns into a 1v2+. Even worse is when I do it lol I'm always like tf did I do that??

    Game sense is just another word for knowledge/experience. That simple

    • @MikeChatman
      @MikeChatman 9 месяцев назад +1

      I like to think of game sense as actively using that knowledge and experience. I know players who've playing since release and they're stuck in silver because they don't use what they know.

    • @MatoTM
      @MatoTM  9 месяцев назад

      I think they're different. Knowledge and experience are more concrete. Knowledge is basically how much you know about something. It's stuff you could put on a test, and people would be able to answer it. Experience can be measured by time. Game sense is more abstract, and there's no real way to measure or test for it.

    • @hootsan
      @hootsan 9 месяцев назад

      @@MatoTM yeah I mean you can have insane game sense but you have to have the practice and mechanics to make the most out of it.

    • @MikeChatman
      @MikeChatman 9 месяцев назад

      Game sense is gained over time. I don't think it's very abstract at all. Wether in video games, war, or sports there's always a game sense. But you're not born with it. I'll use your example. If you're on your first game ever of OW and reaper fades in to ULT. Does your game sense kick in and tell you to sleep him? Nah, you don't have the experience or knowledge. I will slightly change my definition though. Game sense is how well you use your knowledge and experience. So it's dependate on not just time of play and knowledge absorbed but how use it to make critical decisions. Yeah I think that works for me. @@MatoTM

I’ve been trying to learn Mei because of all of the cool things she can do with her walls like blocking ults, using it to get to high ground, etc. but definitely gotta be careful and pay attention to where my teammates are so I don’t wall half my team in with a self-destructing dva (oops) or block my teammates ults..but I’m slowly getting better 🫡
