If there's hair on your head it's growing, something you're doing or not doing is breaking it off.
½ an inch of hair a month is about 1mm every 3 days, so you see how easy it is to shred of your ends off so you see no net increase.
When your hair gets to a certain length other ppl start getting invested in it and there’s this certain pressure placed on your shoulders. I know this haircut was for you, as long as you’re happy.

Went to the salon to get my sister locs cut that I had for 15 years. They were at least to my belly button. The staff at first were REFUSING to cut my hair, they thought I was having a midlife crisis. Other clients in salon chairs were pleading that I shouldn't cut it. The lady who decided to cut it asked me if I was sure about 10 times. I just wanted a short Bob cut to my ears. The moral of the story is stay AUTHENTIC to yourself. People will try to project their own beauty standards and insecurities on you. There is nothing like the feeling of liberation of being true to who you are. People put hair on a pedestal for sure.

Yes I agree with you about that. My grandmother on my father's side loves hair so much. I remember all she would say to me is to NEVER cut my hair. She would say my hair was my crown. She said that so much I never wanted to cut my hair. It was to the point as I grew older I would cry real tears at the hair salon every time I had to get my hair cut because my hair was damaged.My dad is the same way. Anytime I said I was going to the salon the only thing he would say was. "YOU BETTER NOT CUT YOUR HAIR".

She has always kept her hair short. She wears it bold now because she went through cancer and it doesn't grown in the middle any more. But before she suffered with cancer my mom's mom had a very short hair cut. I'm 36 now and I no longer stress over cutting my hair. It took me some time tho. From what I was told from my dad, my grandma hair didn't start to grown until she was 5 years old. Her mother always put a hat on her until her hair really grew in. So I am assuming she was passing down her childhood feelings into her grandkids.

I guess I am an “OG” from back when natural hair boards were a thing. All the threads were literally about hair growth and hair products, that’s it lol. I’ve been natural since 2003 and I stay with a short haircut, sometimes I grow it out, but I always go back to short eventually.

All black All day Yes as long it’s not extra tight putting stress on the hair. I never had long hair before I stopped relaxing. It has grown 18 inches. I cut my hair little by little to get rid of the relaxed hair. I wash once a week to remove oil buildup and use a conditioner. I twist it and leave it alone with a protective style. If you have a problem with tangles and knots, use aunt Jackie’s no knot detangled on DRY hair to detangle before you wash it. Put a mixture of water and oil in a spray bottle to keep your hair hydrated throughout the week. My hair is very coarse and easily broken, so if it works for me, it should work for anyone.

Urgh same. I once decided to give myself a trim and because I was having so much fun I had the absolute genius idea to give myself bangs. I literally sectioned off the thinnest bit of hair you’ve ever seen as a ‘guide’ for the rest of the bangs. Well I chickened out after that and ended up with what can only be described as ghost bangs, I had the essence of bangs, it was like someone in another room whispered ‘bangs’ but you’re not really sure if you heard it or not.
Thankfully they were easy to hide, but if the wind blew them into my face again it looked like my forehead had a 5o’clock shadow.

There is nothing like a fresh cut. I woke up in the hospital in ICU and realized they had cut 1/4 of my hair off. When I went home from having brain surgery I got my clippers out and shaved all the rest of my hair off which was something I had wanted to do for about a year. It felt so refreshing. It was about my 6 big chopped and I love it.
She is ecstatic about her new look. If she's happy I'm happy.

Me too, I hear a lot of people saying it's just hair. Well cancer and medicine took what I had and it's been a struggle for the past 3.5 years. I'm not complaining because GOD kept me during my illness but it's kinda heartbreaking when you looking at thin hair or constant breakage. I have tailbone length hair and I personally feel like I’m still in the beginning of my journey because I did my big chop 5yrs ago. I’m hoping by my 10yr anniversary I will have knee length hair (at least) but I do understand that for us bw, having long hair can be hard work, because these curls are needy lol. But we all do need to support our girls that want and prefer short hair.

My daughter had gorgeous waist length locs she'd grown for 7 years. She decided to take them out this year, and she looks and feels much more free and happy. ☺️
I remember a few years ago when you had color and heat damage you were so upset that you had to do a cut. I love that you’re ok with cutting your hair now. Love it!!

I prefer healthy hair over length. Length is overrated and sometimes can weigh the face down depending on facial shapes. The cut you did is my favorite cut and looks good on you. Get you some statement earrings to set it off!

This is so true. I couldn’t agree more. I think sometimes during our natural hair journey, we look at those curly girls with hair types that aren’t like our own and we beat ourselves up if a twist out or a product doesn’t work as well on our own hair. I’ve been there, done that. Now I appreciate their hair and I enjoy my own journey. Well said sis.

When you said “when you wear your hair that doesn’t feel authentic to your mindset at the time it weighs you down” I def understand that. My hair was Midback length and I have goals of getting to a blunt butt length but at the time my hair wasn’t blunt and I had see through sections and layers. And so I cut it to my ears and ppl thought that was assed backwards but i think you should be happy with your hair the entire journey and so while I waited on the long lengths I wanted to be happy with my shape. I love a blunt cut and now it’s growing back long blunt just how I like it

I've always been saddened and emotionally attached to other people's decisions to cut their long, healthy hair.
However, after cutting my locs after 5 years in October 2019, I have a better perspective of why people cut their hair. I cut my locs because I experienced some traumatic events during the last 5 years.
I'm continuously healing from those traumas and I'm not emotionally tired to my hair or anyone else's hair. Great seeing you start another hair journey Whitney!! 💜💜

I have long hair like hers and I love cutting it. After so many years of obsessively clinging to length because of baggage from being a black woman with natural hair feeling less then and defined by length and curl pattern... I can’t explain it but it feels good to experience blunt ends. It’s easier to detangle and define too. Plus, natural hair is so much work. It just feels good sometimes to let go like she said.
So so happy to see someone not obsessed with length! Yes to the new haircut! I have a lil Afro now grown out from my twa and I love it!
