    The gel didn't break her hair, it was series of action she took after not being able to detangle that essentially loc'd her hair. She should've thoroughly rinsed her hair with hot water to rinse out all the gel, then apply a conditioner with mad slip (that she is familiar with, not a new product) then finger detangle and follow it up with a wide tooth combif she's not comfortable using a brush. Adding oil only further "glued" her hair together (imagine how gunky gel, conditioner, and oil is old hair) into a locs and clarifying it with the shampoo stripped any chance of untangling it because she stripped all the moisture/slip needed to pull the tangles apart and on top of that hair is most fragile and brittle when it it unmoisturized, therefore further manipulation would only result in breakage from there. *Never detangle on unmoisturized hair*
    All that aside, I'm sorry this happened to her and I hope she doesn't cut all her hair off, she needs professional trim and some treatments to keep it moving and growing. Her hair is still length goals and this one incident didn't damage her entire head to the root.

      Daye La Soul I completely agree. She definitely shouldn’t have used a new product to detangle. When she said Aussie Moist didn’t help I almost fell out of my chair because that’s what I used to detangle and it works every time. She shouldn’t have started with the shampoo... That stripped the moisture and helped to tangle it further.

    Sis, I'm so sorry, but I think I know what happened because it happened to me. Strictly finger detangling leaves behind a few hairs that have shed. They eventually make their way out of the hair, but that can take a few days, so some shed hair is always left behind if you strictly finger detangle. The gel "locked" the shed hairs that hadn't been removed and once it dried, that was it. The shed tangled hairs "locked" around your hair strands and there was really nothing you could do. I strictly finger detangled for about 2 years and noticed that this kind of thing would happen if I decided to use gel. I, now, detangle with a comb about once a month or every two months to remove any shed hair that's been left behind from finger detangling. Don't worry, it will grow back! You have excellent hair habits and have taught me a lot.

    Some people would say its just hair, BUT when it comes to 4C HAIR that is TAILBONE LENGTH it is a whole other story. Its is incredibly difficult to manage 4c hair and 4c girls get little love for their hair. Watching this video literally made me want to cry because you've made a such huge achievement getting your hair so long and healthy and I have 4c hair too. If it makes you feel better your hair is still MUCH longer than most 4c people and when you style it a lot of people won't really notice your hair is damage because of the texture. Try using a steamer on slightly wet hair with your regular detangling products. Wish you the best!

      Nelly Uchiha. I think the popularity of wigs, extensions, etc. has a lot to do with why some people don't believe it's all yours. I don't blame you for getting annoyed. Wish I had that problem. Funny, how people who don't care about length often have it and those of us who are striving so hard to grow it longer have a tough time. Maybe the advice one YTer gave not to obsess has some merit.

    With your hair type, you didn't detangle your hair well enough and that is why your hair knotted up. Its not necessarily the gels fault. I honestly use to watch your videos and wondered how you have gotten so far without your hair knotting up because you just don't detangle it enough from what I see. When the hair isn't detangled properly all the shedded hair just sits there tangling with the rest of the hair so the gel formed a barrier around those Knotts making it hard to come out. You will get through this setback and will be able to share with us how you revived your hair. I know that I will definitely be watching.

      i agree with what you said. I have the same hair type as her, and I use gels all the time. Hell ive gelled my hair in a ponytail for a week. Done twistouts with gel, for a week or two. However, I usually finger detangle the hell out of my hair with a slippery conditioner before shampooing to cut down on the tangles, because shampooing tangle hair is a nightmare. but I feel like she did that because its her usual wash routine and didnt expect the gel to do that.

    When last did you thoroughly detangle your hair with a comb? Did you thoroughly detangle your hair before applying the gel? I ask this because it is NEVER a good idea to apply gel to hair that has not been thoroughly detangled. Definitely a recipe for tangled matted hair.
    Also, I’ve noticed that when you have super kinky hair and you finger detangle only, often times you are not fully removing all of the shed hairs causing some shed hair to be trapped in.
    With that being said, gels have the tendency to clump the strands together sometimes creating curls depending on the hair type. So Maybe the shed hairs clumped together and tangled themselves around the non-shed hair causing it to be matted? And what made it worse was that you left the twist in for 2 days giving it more time to become even more matted.
    Then on top of that while your hair was matted, you used a clarifying shampoo! Seems like it was a combination of different things that caused this setback.
    I’ve seen women with kinkier Texture than yourself use eco styler gel with no issues. The trick was that they all had Super detangled hair and had a good leave-in moisturized before applying the gel.

"RUclips" did this to her because she wouldn't have done all this extra stuff with the eco styler if she didn't have a channel on youtube. She was doing it for the camera. She even explained it. So yeah... let's take a deep breath people. It's not that deep.

    • @daniellewhite6063
      @daniellewhite6063 6 лет назад +44

      I agree. I think the title is misplaced. RUclips didn't break her hair, she broke it. She decided to try something she saw on RUclips but as someone who gives others advice. She should know everything isn't for everyone's hairs. For 7 years she's been natural and never did that and shouldn't start it now. I'm sorry she went through that and is hurting because if it but you can't blame RUclips for something you made your own decision on

    It wasn’t the gel itself, likely the technique of application. Always use a moisturizer, oil, or cream (or all three) before adding gel. Never put straight gel on your hair with nothing in between. Our hair type does not do well with that. Also don’t put hair in the toilet!! You can cause problems with your system.

  • @danicakelly2242
    @danicakelly2242 6 лет назад +65

    Let me ask a question. I know you strive not to overly detangle your hair (cause it leads to breakage) but did you thoroughly detangle your hair before adding the gel? The reason ppl detangle completely from root to tip (usually with a detangling tool) before wash n gos is not only for definition. But any tangles left in your hair (even if they are normally harmless and are easily kept at bay with oils and butters) will be locked in, almost glued in, with gels. Gels with protein or drying alcohols (like eco) only make this worse and can quickly cause matts and tangles. Dry detangling with an oil (prepoo, or hot oil treatment) before washing can be lifesaving when working with gel, because soap will reduce the oils in your hair and make detangling afterwards even worse because you have less slip!

    • @NaomiMordi
      @NaomiMordi 6 лет назад +5

      Danica Kelly True. I get the best wash n gos on super super detangled hair. My coils have a diameter of about 2mm give or take (yes, needle size).

      @danicakelly2242 6 лет назад +4

      Naomi Mordi Yeah and the times I've done wash n gos after i haven't in a while, if i don't prepoo and detangle beforehand, wash day is way more of a struggle than usual.

      Danica Kelly Agreed.. Common sense...

    • @danicakelly2242
      @danicakelly2242 6 лет назад +9

      Michelle Gomez Well I don't think its a common sense thing. She wasn't used to using gel like that so taking those extra steps wasn't intuitive. She doesn't usually detangle that thoroughly because she doesn't have to, since her hair is so easily maintained using oils and butters. It was an easy mistake to make in her situation.

    • @lanel-2904
      @lanel-2904 6 лет назад +5

      Danica Kelly totally agree! As I was listening to her explain what happened, I wondered if the fact that her hair is never completely detangled played a major role in this set back. I tried finger detangling for about 6 months and I'm not a fan at all. I had more breakage from continuous styling on top of tangles and knots than when I detangled with my Denman every wash day.

      I think also the fact that it was a clarifying shampoo which strips the hair of moisture which aided in the knotting and matting. Maybe beginning with a conditioner or lots of oil and wet hair to finger detangle first before using a clarifying shampoo

      I think that the eco gel had already matted her 4c hair but she did not realize it. She then washed her hair while it was in twists which contributed to the locs, mats and knots. She panicked and used additional products which further matted her hair. I think the eco gel did it. Heavy gels are not for all hair types especially ones with kinker textures such as 4c hair.

    I didn't have this type of setback, but I did have a setback last year that caused me to have to cut off 10-12 in of my hair. I went from tailbone length to Mid back length, which for me was catastrophic because it has taken me 6 to 7 years to get to that point. I've been using Curly Proverbz method of ayurvedic hair care for a year and I've gained about 7-8 inches back, in addition to a large amount of thickness that I've never seen before. I highly suggest it. There was nothing wrong with the hair care methods I used before, but Curly Proverbz method was really great because my hair was in a really weak state and it took a lot of strengthening to stop the breakage and get it to a point where I felt comfortable enough to get a good cut and start again. I'm sure everyone has some really great suggestions, but what worked best for me was putting my hair away so that I couldn't see it. I experimented a lot with updos, boho locs, and even clip-ins. Only seeing my hair loose about once a month was helpful because I wasn't tracking growth every day. MSM, collagen powder, and bamboo tea helped me a great deal as well. You will get there. Will be following your journey back to your goals.

    Seems like had you detangled your hair first BEFORE washing, the damage would not have been so severe. The gel caused the shed hairs to lock and tangle and washing your hair without detangling first just made it worse.
    This reminds me of when I washed my hair without detangling after taking down braids back in 2012 while I still relaxed. The shed hairs caused locking and I ended up needing a big cut.

    I’m SOOO sorry this happened to you. A similar thing happened to me with a diy paprika hair dye. I HEALED my hair by using Indian *Ghee* ( melted unsalted butter) I had to leave it in for 24 hours under plastic cap then finger detangle. It smells really bad but it worked. PLEASE research ghee for the hair 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

      I am so sorry that you and @Craving Curly Kinks had to deal with the setback, but I am glad that you found ghee to be helpful (just finished watching that video and a few others)...I will be making a batch of ghee soon, as I was not aware of ghee's other amazing properties for the hair (tastes good in Indian food haha). Thanks for sharing your story about this, as I realize that crazy matting episodes such as these can happen under the weirdest/most random circumstances. One never knows what new products out there that one tries could cause a terrible matting episode, so it's best to be prepared as possible to handle the situation.

    I’d say this is the perfect time for a proper brush detangle with lots of conditioner and a good trim. That way you’re starting with detangled hair and you can continue with finger detangling in the future. Gel and partially detangled hair don’t go together. Now you know …

    It's not RUclips that's the issue.
    When applying *any type of gel* especially if you're going to use it all over your hair your hair must be *fully detangled* prior to using it, otherwise once the gel dries the hair will lock up and tangle. And honestly your hair doesn't look that bad. Yes it's uneven and thinner than what it used to be, but a nice cut 6-7 inches, deep conditioning treatments, daily moisture + heavy sealing and protective styling can help remedy the situation. BC'ing down to a TWA or shaving it all off doesn't seem logical, unless your roots are damaged too. Anyways, I hope you find a solution. Good luck.

    I really feel for you. It is interesting that even with hair as long and abundant as yours it still did not seem enough for the YT natural hair community, you believed it would look better 'shiny', I imagine like non 4c hair? I'm hopeful a natural hair community that rids itself completely of the desire for the aesthetic of non 4c hair emerges.

    • @phalynwilliams4119
      @phalynwilliams4119 6 лет назад +6

      Maribeja Intel I agree her 4c hair was "shiny" enough already. I am very sympathetic about what happened to her but she had so much hair she did not need to add to it. The crochet braid video topic was more appropriate for a presenter with less length. Craving curly kinks's videos are excellent for natural hair care. Sometimes, part of the journey includes setbacks and learning that some styles and/or products are best left to other hair types, lengths, ect.

    • @wordsbymaribeja1470
      @wordsbymaribeja1470 6 лет назад +4

      I went natural in 2001, before YT, but within a couple of years of hunting sites like napturality and fokti and seeing the obsession with texture shots and product junkism, which was really about finding products that changed your hair texture but in 'a natural way', I checked out. I really feel for CCK because she got caught up in the YT natural hair culture and that did not get her hair to what it was. I have had plenty of hair catastrophies and you recover. The quality of advice, genuine and with good heart, CCK gave she'll recover her hair and emerge more knowledgeable than ever. I agree with you, part of the journey are these setbacks which is hard to hear when the shock is so raw. CCK can make something good out of this journey, whether she chooses to share it or not.

    Hello Beautiful. You know what I want to share something with you. I’ve been Natural for a long time but over the last 2 years I have been focusing on growing my hair Long and Strong. My hair had never been so Long Beautiful Thick and Healthy. It was so Healthy that it looked like a wig. Anyway on the exact same day that this experience happened to you, I had a setback as well. I decided to use a henna treatment on my hair. For what reason I do not know!!!!! My hair was already PERFECT!!! Anyway it dried my hair and loosened my curls. My hair has not been the same. I was devastated. I Cried and Cried and Stressed. But eventually I decided that I had to Move On. It was a Life Lesson. If it Ain’t broke don’t fix it!!!! Our hair likes what it likes!!!! I learned to stick with what your hair likes, and keep it Simple!!! One Blessed thing is our hair grows everyday. Even though it’s disappointing there’s a lesson in the experience. Learn from it and Grow Beautiful. Maybe you went through it for others. But Guess what? GOD WILL GIVE YOU DOUBLE FOR YOUR TROUBLE. KEEP GROWING QUEEN KEEP SHINING THAT IS WHY YOU WERE PUT ON THIS EARTH!!! That’s what I’m doing. I had a setback for a set up!!!! Learn and keep Going. DONT STOP!!!! Keep Deep Conditioning and get back to your oils, take your Herbs and eat healthy. Your hair will be back in no time!!!! I PROMISE. I ordered MoorKet Deep Conditioner. 22 Century She is a blogger, I ordered her all Natural Deep Conditioner and Shampoo bar. Also follow my business page TheGreenTreeLife on IG and Facebook. I created an Herbal Supplement that’s good for the body to help promote Healthy Hair as well. Love you and Keep Going cause I AM!!!!!!! Xoxoxo

I'm in the process of starting my natural hair journey and I am considering cutting it off again because when I cut it the first time I immediately permed it because I convinced myself I could not handle it. I just wanted to say I have many friends that would not even start to go natural because of this mentality, but it's been empowering and I've found so much pride in my hair. Hi. I just wanted to give some input on this to try and help. My 4c hair does this everytime with eco styler gel. It looks like dreads because the gel kind of glues the strands together. when we have sticky stuff like that clinging to our already tangle-prone strands, it creates clumps where the gel sticks the most, and it is all the way down the strand. the key is to use a slippery oil (like my avocado oil) to DRY finger detangle from ENDS to root to loosen and separate the gel clumps and stuck together strands BEFORE you wet it for washing, or it becomes a nightmare once you wet it and it starts curling and shrinking. After the dry detangling I use a very soft bristle brush to brush most of the gel residue out. It's so soft it can't really act as a brush. It just gets that separated glue crap (gel) out because once you wet it, it gets even more sticky. I know it seems unable to be saved in this "dread" state, but it can be if you're used to the idea of the glue like properties of the eco styler on certain 4c hair. I wish i could have been there to help you out

    Wow sorry to hear that. Herbal Essence Hello Hydration is my holy grail and detangler. I always use that as my final rinse. If taking down braids or twists I suggest it prior. Your new hair journey will give you something that makes you stand out from the rest. What next .... is up to you!!! This happened to me after doing a clay wash and protein treatment in one day. (Big mistake.) My hair clumped together and dreaded. It was a nightmare. Like you said, even using conditioner and deep conditioner I could not detangle it without breaking my hair apart. My drain look like your pictures for 2 months. My hair fell out for months. My hair was the healthiest it had ever been in my life prior to this incident, so i was devastated. It finally stopped falling out after doing another protein treatment on freshly washed hair. My hair is healthy again, however, it is so thin....(not that thin, but in comparison to what it had been it is thin.) Sigh, I know how you feel! But it'll grow back, Honey! There is some lesson in here somewhere. stay positive!

    I grew mine to almost waist length and broke it all off wearing buns. Mine became matted in the bun and broke off in large clumps. Now starting over with lots of TLC. Having people with no experience at two different salons handle my hair twice was no good either. I lost length and bulk in 2017.
    Sporting a braided ponytail for the next year with lots of conditioning. We will get our hair back and then some quickly in Jesus name.
    RUclips natural ladies are giving suggestions only. Bentonite clay wash to reset and get the Ecostyler chemicals out. Give it a few days before you decide to cut. Make sure it’s as bad as you think.
    I pray Gods protection over us from the wicked and jealous people and for continued growth maximum growth better than ever in “Jesus Name”.

I'm not sure if you did, but I always co-wash before using any shampoo to make sure most of the product build up and gel is rinsed out (I use Eco-styler gel every day without any issues). The few times that my hair tangled really bad (almost matted) is when I forgot to co-wash and slap shampoo straight onto my hair. If you didn't co-wash, I am willing to bet the damage was caused by a combination of the gel and shampoo.

    I can feel the disappointment and hurt in your voice!! We all have setbacks dear! I was in a stressful program in college, ended up on medication, and I dropped out anyway. With that being said, my hair came right out too, once I got off the meds. I had to cut 7 inches off the frontal portion of my crown, and I was devastated!!! But, I left the back long. That was two years ago, and my hair is thriving! The back portion is to my elbows, but the front is layered to catch up with the back. In conclusion, don't start over. Just cut off what needs to go and move on with your routine. Your hair will grow back. Be strong girl, I am sorry this happened to you!!!

    So sorry that happened to you. Seemed it has been a combination of both product. Shea Moisture actually doesn't work on my hair (Except Black Castor Oil Shampoo). Coconut Oil did a similar thing to my hair a few years ago. I still remember my hair becoming hard then in the shower feeling someTHINGS going doing my body. I did a semi-big chop and now I am back to 2013 length. Giving you hugs!!

    You are blessed. The very fact you have the strength and courage to come on video and share that experience indicates it. You already know what to do. You have been learning and self training for at least six years. And you have excelled! You even did a vid helping your mom with a similar situation and excelled. (Honor the father and mother that it may be well with you). You could probably could (and do) grow hair in your sleep. By that I mean the techniques you use and skills you practice are second nature. Your hair has been so well cared for it will more than likely quickly rebound and not take as long to regrew length and be healthy. Also for others in cases of emergency sometimes contacting the product company and obtaining their advice may prove helpful. You are blessed. Here you GROW again.😂

    The eco styler most likely activated as soon as you wet it.. once you wet your hair, each strand automatically infused with each other. That's the only thing that makes sense. I hope this helped. Your hair is beautiful with the two side buns and your hoops, gonna try this cute look. And even when you took it down to show us, your hair still looks healthy. You should do a protein treatment and a deep conditioning. 😍

      Eco styler gel is very drying. You can use it, but through trial and error I have learned that you have to layer your hair with moisturuzer, oil or butter first before using any gel for that matter. It doesn't have a hold of 10 for no reason. Plus, you have to make sure your hair is fully detangled before using gel. It will lock up your hair with the shed hair.

    • @wb4882

      gigglyfitzgirl ecostyler gave me a bald spot. I don't know why 4c naturals still use that shitty ass gel.
      I solved my matting dreadlock tangle issue a long time ago by using greese and crisco. lubrication from both conditioning oils like petroleum and lanolin and thick vegetable oils like crisco.
      I use it to detangle and seal after my moisturize (LCGO: liquid, leave in condition, grease, oil). I also use the lorecia fetherwood brush to help detangle once I've finger detangle first and saturated the gease an oil in my hair. dephne madyara is a ytbr with bleached 4c hair the same length as this woman's used to be and she uses grease. lioness Davis use grease as well. grease imo is best for 4c naturals with fine hair strands. without it, I seriously do not think it is possible for fine stranded 4c naturals to permanently retain serious length. (unless they slather their hair with animal fat.) grease like blue magic, or any oil based conditioner that mixes petroleum/mineral oil and lanolin(boiled sheep sebum) lubricates the hair and prevents the kind of friction that causes both matting and breakage, allowing u to retain length especially when used as a part of LCGO. this is just my opinion though.

    I specialize in pain free detangling.
    You do not detangle by combing.
    You cannot detangle a mat by combing downward or using a brush.
    Take warm Babassu oil and apply to your hair.
    Leave it on with a cap for 24 hours.
    If no babassu use olive oil.
    After it has been left on.
    Slowly take the back section (about 1 x 1 square inch)
    Take the hair, start at the end and gentle spead the hair sideways.
    SIDEWAYS..JUST THE TIPS.
    Spread until really thin (see through)
    After it is see through, gently comb down.
    Move up another inch and do the same. Continue slowly up the section spreading side ways, then combing down.
    I wish I was near you. I would detangle your hair for free.
    When thoroughly detangled, use ACV on scalp and leave on for 30 min with cap. Then wash hair as usual.
    The amount of hair lost is less than 100 strands.
    Take your time.

    Yes Sweetheart you can stop wondering, it was the gel. The very same thing happened to me, tho I was rocking some braids. I used gel a few times to slick down my edges and around the back. I had individuals too. Girl by the time I took my braids down I had developed dreadlocks starting from the back growing upward. My hair was only about 18 1/2 inches long when I had the braids put in. Needless to say I had to cut all that off and start all over again.

    It may have been the clarifying shampoo combined with the gel. Gel naturally is drying for hair, but to wash with clarifying shampoo after your hair has been molded into a twist style for some days is the perfect setting for that type of tangling. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Pick up your head, don’t give up on your hair; it’s a part of you. There’s no casting it aside, love it in its condition and carry on taking care of it.

      Maria Small, hi, I don't know if it's me you are commenting to or not, but if it's me yes I watched the video. And, there was nothing I said that was negative. I don't know how old you are, but sometimes it takes an unfortunate or tragic event in someone life to open up their eyes and realize life is more than "this or that ". Please think about that before you start commenting back to me.
      FYI: This is one of the reason why I don't like commenting on RUclips videos. Too many people can't just read a comment without taking it too personal.

    Let me start by saying how truly sorry I am for your set back. I just celebrated 7 years natural also and God must have allowed your video to come up in my feed because I just went from bra strap length to neck length in a matter of 3 weeks because of a cornbraid style I just took down on Friday night (1/12/18). My hair was literally locked like I had dreads. I could not undo the knots with my fingers or even with a small safety pin. I had to cut each and every knot out of my head. I am holding the tears back bc I have never worn a wig before now, Sunday (1/14/18). My stylist rushed over to see the damage. She cut as much as she could but refused to shave my head. It is only God! I’ve decided to see this as a lesson learned and continue on my journey to healthy hair. Braids may not be for me. It’s been 7 years since I had crown braids with extensions. Thank you for sharing. I will continue to watch u recover as I recover. Maybe I can gain some tips for u as well. Blessings.

    It sounds more like the shea butter (in the shea moisture products) or the thick butters you used locked in the hair.
    This has happened to me, if your hair has clumped or tangled use apple cider vinegar diluted with water to detangle.
    Using this method will led to minimal loss with cutting off clumping and tangles.
    It’s the combination of the products and trying to use a clarifying shampoo on tangled hair is what caused this.

    With all due respect, I don't understand why it's RUclips's fault that YOU decided to use Ecostyle on your hair. I watch tons of RUclips hair tutorials from women who use all sorts of products on their hair and just because the products work for others doesn't mean they will work for me. If I do decide to use something that I saw on RUclips outside of my normal routine and it so happens not to work out for me guess whose fault it is? Mine! I myself love Ecostyle. I buy it by the buckets full. However, on the other hand, if I do protective styles, as many women swear by, my scalp will be a dry, itchy mess and my hair becomes brittle. I found that out the hard way but I don't blame the proponents of protective styling for any set backs I experienced for trying it. I understand you are heartbroken because growing out our type of hair can be quite a journey but we have to be careful and remember that everything ain't for everybody. Life is full of lessons, and your hair will grow back longer and stronger because of that😉
