2 biggest tips from a veteran:
1) Use buffs/debuffs
2) Keep fusing new more powerful demons (with strong moves your current demons already have.)
Grinding isnt too necessary but make sure to keep your best moves on your new demons
Good tips!
Thanks for that
And if you struggle, stay in one area and bash those monsters until you can auto attack every fight, then you know your nice and op for the next area
Thank you
is like persona, different skin
It's great to see new people taking an interest in this game. Hopefully Atlus will continue to port more of the older SMT games as well like they did with Nocturne.
Crazy how series get more popular when the entry barrier gets lowered.
maybe ports of the ones on the 3DS and a persona 3 port could hold some promise
Very commendable approach to a fair review 👏 Its pretty wack when reviewers with no experience with a series give an unfair/biased review.
I second this 100%. I find it so refreshing that RGT tries to comment on all types of games based on what fans might want to know.
First SMT was years before the first Pokémon, Pokémon just made it kid friendly
What about a giant green phallus riding a golden chariot isn't kid friendly?!?!?!?
Dragon quest came first years before lol and it was kid friendly. SMT was just for an older audience when the JRPG genre blew up.
@@Binks129 dragon quest didnt have monster summoning though?? Thats dragon quest monsters, which came out after
@@karekakeka4143 Net hack had it beat buddy. SMT isn’t the first of its genre JRPG or monster summoning. Not even the alignment system.
@@Binks129 nethack is a roguelike?? Not a jrpg at all lmao
Fantastic video RGT! I'm so glad you gave this game a try. As a big SMT fan I've been looking forward to this game for a long time and now that I am playing it at launch I'm having a blast!
same here!
@@Ihatevideogames334 you forgot to say you hate yourself
RGT! One of your best videos! I remember when the Switch was advertised, they showed this game and it looked interesting. I've never played a SMT game, so after so much time had passed, I wasn't really thinking about it anymore. Thanks to your video, I will likely get this game! I absolutely love turn-based RPGs, its what I grew up with and I've never fully adjusted to action RPGs. The graphics look really, really nice, and those mechanics, the concepts and the story all seem really, really cool! Thanks for such an informative video! Great job!
I have never played any of these games in this series, but I’ve played plenty of JRPGs in the past. I think this might be my first purchase of the series. It looks great and everywhere I look, I’m reading positive things about it.
My first game too, I've always found the series kinda interesting but the 1s person turn based gameplay turned me off, I hate 1st person rpg's it's actually stupid. Putting this in 3rd person was thr smartest moves ever even though some of the enemies u fight look stupid like the slices for example.
@@Ihatevideogames334
Mans just said “I only like platformers that i grew up with because nostalgia” without directly admitting to it lmao
Get Persona 5 too. These games are really good
I played FFVII (does that count?) till my save didnt work!🙄 sad times never played it since!
@@stephenwalsh4481 I mean it's a baby's entry to FF but it still counts
Been a fan of the series for quite a while, can deff recommend picking this game up! Been having a blast with the story, combat, music, and voice overs. If I had to recommend any other titles the first smt for the snes( would probably have to emulate) is a amazing start for the series. I also had a lot of fun with smt3 and smt4 (4 may give people trouble tho due to the 3ds’s weird control scheme). Persona 4/golden and 5 are also good starting points for the series( although they have quite a bit of a lighter theme to them story wise).
nerd
SMT 3 is the one to start with imo :D I remember playing that back on the didn't know what I'd Bought just saw a demon kid on front needles to say I've been a fan ever since
@@TupacWallace says the guy who clearly searched for this review.. begone troll
Smt 4 is my favorite. I started with smt iv apocalypse for 3ds and I was hooked.
This guy thinks we all are jrpg lords lmao
Easily hands down my GOTY, and IMO one of the best Jrpgs you can play on the Nintendo Switch
BET!
Don’t forget xenoblade chronicles and fire emblem three houses.
@Dan Smith and you also hate anime styled game
Returnal buddy chill
@@djr4103 dragon quest 11 too!
I have to admit I am very glad sega did this for you and it makes me very happy to hear that you were enjoying the game it is actually quite a series once you get ahold of the mechanics
I liked this video! You should review more games that you don't usually play! It's nice listening to a noobie's perspective
Great review! I havent played a single SMT and have been curious. Your review hit the mark for people like me
this game looks so good, I was definitely going to get it but I was going to wait a bit and maybe buy another game before this since I´ve been playing many jrpgs lately and wanted a break but now you´re kinda convincing me of getting it right away!
I’ve never really got into this franchise but maybe this video will finally change my mind to give it a shot.
"An adult/dark Pokemon game with demons" is always how I described the SMT series.
Fun fact: this series did have a spin off in Japan called Devil children, and we did get a translation of it on the Game Boy Advance called Demi kids. That version was basically just Shin Megami Tensei, but Pokémon.
I mean, SMT predates pokemon so it’s a rip-off of a rip-off which in itself is a spin-off of a spin-off that’s a spiritual successor to an adaptation of a light novel
Demi-kids is quite the game on the GBA. Still very playable today.
Demi kids was amazing dude
They need to release all the SMT spinoffs for switch!!! Could you imagine?
@@Konfide4043 All 60+ games would be a massive undertaking
SMT was the, if not, one of the first monster collector RPGs so it makes sense Pokemon took from it.
So you probably didn't know but the SMT series did the monster collection for party members before pokemon was around.
Overall the series is good, i hope they port the other games to newer systems.
Yea
10:41 Manananggal is our scary mythical creature here in the Philippines. Nice recognition there Atlus!
Sweet review RGT! I hope this convinces more people who are still hesitant into getting this game.
I heard framerate is bad
@@JohnnyKin it pushes the switch to the absolute limit, but 4gb of ram aren't always enough. There's nothing game breaking though and those moments aren't too frequent.
New to the series game looks really fun played persona 3,4,5 and I liked the combat system but I say this looks a lot more dark and serious looks really fun can't wait to play.
Physical copy of this game is on sale at the moment on Amazon for $38
im so glad i finally started SMT V a couple days ago. never played any of the mainline SMT games (played persona 1 3 and 4 though) but damn V is so good, maybe one of the prettiest games ive played on the switch and the gameplay is great. im definitely going back to play some of the other games like nocturne and dds. i just love the art direction and themes of them all, its such a unique franchise that doesnt get enough attention
also the soundtrack is 10/10
I’ve never played any other game in the series. Did you feel like you were lost with the story, or is it a game you can just jump in to @ V?
Another reason to fuse demons is that it takes more exp to level them up say pixie from lvl 5 to 6 it will take her like (exagerating) 1000 exp while a lvl 12 base demon needs like 800 exp for their 1st lvl up it is a mechanic to ensure that you fuse often, also blocking or missing atacks makes you or the enemy lose 2 action turns

The demon Shiisaa is based on the Komainu or Shisa dog, a figure in Chinese mythology that is often paid omage to in the form of figurines and sculptures that come in a variety of shapes and sizes and whose large stone versions are often found guarding temples of various types.
Thank you. I'm not big into turn based RPG games but I did get this one. So again, thank you for this video.
I've played and beaten all but Strange Journey and Persona 4. I love this series and will be picking it up today
We need a “things of that nature” drinking game lol.
I had to take 6 shots
You beat me to it.
Damn…I just posted this…haha….I noticed it a few videos ago…
It's so weird hearing RGT be professional coming from the podcast lol I keep waiting for the random F bomb or sonic story tangent to pop up. Great video bro.
Congrats RGT, you managed to squeeze in "things of that nature" 6 times this video.
And whatnot
smtv got me into the whole series
Never played a SMT game before. Bought this one and bought SMT 3hd same time. Having fun playing them both on hard. Thanks for your review.
That's a pretty good overview of what to expect. Sometimes I jump into these games and get my butt kicked because of the steep learning curve
Don't forget the importance of buffing/debuffing while in combat.
Love it!! My first SMT game was 3DS SMT 4 then Apocalypse. I did play P3 & Persona4G before SMT but honestly they’re both great! This new entry is freakin awesome! Use Buffs, I can’t say that enough lol
I’m experienced with the Persona series which is part of the overall SMT universe, but when it comes to the mainline SMT series I am new to it even though I do own the SMT III Nocturne remaster for PS4, and I did preorder the steel book edition for SMT V. We’ll see how I fare in it.
No, it's the other way around; Pokemon is a twee, family friendly Shin Megami Tensei. The original Megami Tensei came out on the Famicom almost a full decade before the first Pokemon game.
Fusing for the different orders of angels based on your level is also helpful. They make for good healers in a pinch.
Got a co worker into SMT 5. He seen me playing 4 and 4 Apocalypse during breaks. He's an RPG fan and so far he likes it and wanted to play something to consume his free time.
It will certainly do that! The last time I fell into a gaming hole was Persona 5 Royal.. That game had me a bit concerned about not being present for my life and partner it sucked so much of my time, with this one I feel the exact same thing so it's certainly a good sign as far as quality goes
I’ve never played any games from this series and would of stayed away from this but after watching you figure this out I’m now going to pick it up and jump in. Great vid man
Really great video RGT 85.
I've not Played a ton of SMT Games, Played some of the 3DS ones which are super cool.
I haven't got SMT5 yet but I am looking forward too checking it out.
fun fact: the first shin megami tensei came out before the first pokemon games were released, 4 years if im not mistaken. so with this logic pokemon is a kids friendly shin megami tensei :D
Good review man. Thanks for taking time to convince me to get it!
Playing it right now, it's awesome
Never played a SMT game before but I got the steel book edition brand new for $50 CAD. no brainer pickup for me, slowly starting out and enjoying it so far
I am so happy that RGT is covering this game.
I have never played a SMT before but this has a lot of features from the persona game I was not going to get it but you changed my mind thank you
Persona series is a spin-off of SMT mainline series.
I liked how you explained the game. I am only about seven hours into the game. To me it is like persona minus friends and schoolwork. Lol. A lot more grinding but it is a very satisfying rpg.
Im probably going to grab this game, im new to the series too but it does look like a solid game.
very cool to this video since you aren't a hardcore jrpg guy 😅 definitely getting this I played a couple of the 3ds smt games and liked them a ton can't wait.
Thx for sharing ya thoughts, I’ll pick this up Tomorrow!
After Metroid dread I thought we peaked this year with switch then they go and release this
Im new to this franchise and currently highly enjoying it. Recommend!
I will jump into it soon. I bought the the game, brand new, at the very end of 2023 at Best Buy for just 35$ 😮
The music/sound in this game is great.
I want this game but I simply don’t have the time to beat it. 😭
Just play in an easier mode. I'm doing that, I'm in a master's program and I don't have the time to grind.
This is helpful! Thanks RGT, I have been on the fence but think I will now check this out!
As long as you understand that as a new player you will die a lot on this game then its fine and sooner or later you can enjoy this game although a very hard game its also very rewarding if you can finish this game
I plan on getting Shin Megami Tensai V. I've only plated SMT #FE so I've wanted to one in the main series. Especially after beating Persona 4G. Just made me wanna actually try the SMT series.
My best advice for new players is play on normal. That goes for 3 and 4 as well, it seriously took me 4 hours to get passed the tutorial demons in nocturne’s hard mode.
I especially recommend all SMT games on the 3ds especially devil survivor overclocked and SMT4.
I own every 3ds megaten game from soul hackers to Persona Q2, and they’re all gold.
Devil Survivor is widely regarded as peak megaten story wise, it’s a visual novel strategy RPG similarly to fire emblem but it uses a modified press turn system called “extra turn” and was my gateway into megaten.
SMT4 is still what I’d consider the best new player experience game-wise as you can save anywhere and change the difficulty to or from hard mode anytime you want.
And persona fans that may want to jump into mainline just know that P5’s hard mode is roughly as hard as SMT’s normal mode.
I bought the game on release and I have 12 hours in it's my first game in the series and I'm really enjoying it.
i never played any games from SMT series, but i saw the "manananggal" which is a mythical creature from my country, Philippines. I'm sold.
Great review, your review actually has gotten me exited, can't wait for the mail to come today but more importantly...
Which crayon are you Shawn? WHICH CRAYON ARE YOU!!?
Glad you enjoyed it. As a fan of the series I would highly recommend SMT IV, SMT IV Apocalypse and the Devil Survivor sub series on the 3DS if you wanted SMT with a Fire Emblem twist. Those are the game that I feel are easier to get into, since their mechanics and structure is more forgiving than older games. Not necessarily easy though xD. For the hardcore masochists Nocturne and Strange Journey are amazing games. Digital Devil Saga is also another great one too, but harder to find since you need to buy the PS2 or PSN version on PS3.
Nocturne 😔🫡
Man this is like playing a game using stereo instructions. (Old reference because I’m old).
Picked it up today and looking forward to jumping in.
I'm thinking about buying SMT5. If my local walmart has a copy next time I go I'll probably snag it.
Apparently the physicals copy will take a while due to shipping.
Erik Landon is basically saying this is one of his favorite RPGs of all time and he's played probably 90% of every JRPG that's ever been made.
Just wanted to leave an attaboy for you RGT. I’ve been steering away from the bigger video gaming companies for reviews and opinions. I feel like I can relate much more to creators like you and Spawn. Keep up the great work!
Buy food or this game? Hmmmm? I'll buy this game.
Metroid Dread sold 854,000 copies for October. I think RGT is safe.
at the same time, they did say that in the region they have the sales on, it beaten metroid prime... so we still dont know lol.
I actually wasn't going to touch this game because it was the fifth one but the whole demon melding thing looks pretty rad. Also I'm one of the rare people that love turn based rpgs or in this case jrpg so I'm going to go ahead and pick this one up now. Thanks!
The games are stand alone….
I'm holding out hoping I'll get it for Christmas. If not, I'll buy it in January.
Happy new year RGT and, YES this game has wiped the floor with me HARD AF
I started playing these games with Persona 2 - Eternal Punishment back in 2004 and I've been a huge fan ever since. If you guys want to get deep into the franchise, be sure to check all the sub series: Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor, Persona and obviously the main brand, Shin Megami Tensei.
You forgot about best game in series: RONDE :)
Here in Philippines the manananggal also known as “aswang” a human can half their lower and upper body, favorite hobby is to find a pregnant woman then eat the baby in the belly of woman. They can found in Visayas & Mindanao
Got it on Wednesday. Haven’t been able to play it yet. And I actually got Brilliant Diamond delivered on launch day (that hasn’t happened in a minute) so now I can’t decide which one to play first. 😂
Very nice review, thanks!
SMT seems like a dope version of Persona, I like it 🙂
10:41 that's our Filipino Myth Legend Manananggal, you pronounce it as MANA-NANG-GAL
I feel like smt v streamlined a lot of the lesser things from the other smt game i play, which is nocturne.
I feel like it's easier to customise fused demons and get demons that you may like because of their design.
Both games are amazing, even though the nocturne remaster sucks as a remaster but still remains enjoyable
Thanks for the video! I'm interested in this game but only played Persona 5 and not sure how I'd do with this one.
You talk so fast but so good and on point always! Saludos desde España! :)
It's kind of a trip watching videos about SMT V while playing Persona 5 for the first time. I knew they were deeply related, but seeing the same enemies and gameplay systems is a fine reminder that they are DEEPLY related. I'm stoked to try this one out eventually.
This is late but fun fact, persona started out as a spinoff of SMT. It's just that persona, funnily enough, grew much more popular than SMT at least in the west.
Love JRPGs, but never dabbled in this series. I got Nocturne on a sale recently but I think V is a better starting point for the series. With all the positive reviews, this might be a GOTY contender?
Dude, 3 is a masterpiece.
SEGA is a Video game Master Mind don't sleep on them yo!!
Yup, I wll give it a good try, looks interesting.Great reviewing, I'm new to your channel too, very hyped about that too, thx
Silly complaint but does anyone else think the super long hair looks stupid?
Rent's due this week so I plan to pick this up next pay. Loved SMT 3 back in the day, looking forward to playing V.
This is more or less how I feel about the game, it looks amazing but I don't know if I can get into it as I've never played any of the previous games in the series and it doesn't seem to cater to the casual gamer.
each game is a stand alone game. But I recommend playing SMT 5 over Nocturne if you never played one before. Nocturne is very hard until you get the hang of the system. SMT 5 allowing the casual mode does help IMO. But they are very good even for a casual gamer as you can take your time. There are times I have fired up the system played a half hour and other times I have played for 8 hours.
Long time smt fan actually my first manager when I worked at GameStop for the first time when I was just a customer recommended Nocturne which is the 3rd entry and since then I've been hooked
yooo RGT much respect from Seattle!
I’m glad you chose to try this game.
I get it is difficult. Altus JRPG’s in general are usually pretty difficult. The three biggest RPG’s of atlus being Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, and Etrian Odyssey. However….
And this is a big however
As you said, for those willing to be patient, and learn the game while dying a lot, this game can be a huge learning experience when it comes to JRPG’s with turn based battle systems.
Also, the fusion system is a balance between fun and overwhelming. It’s overwhelming until you realize the enjoyment of mixing and matching the right abilities on the right demons to make some stupid strong.
Ya after playing persona and SMT last couple years it really is like adult mature Pokémon lol
Excellent review man. Thanks for that. I ll definitely buy this game. Love those mechanics
Thanks so much for this video RGT! I've got persona 5 atm so this helps a lot! Not the same game I know but think it's of the same line?
Why keep saying "Shin Megami Tensei five" instead of using the acronym "SMT5"? Because it feels and sounds so damn good. That's why. Just picked up my physical copy from Gamestop. Steelbook is pretty cool.
No Gamestop in Knoxville had physical copies so I ended up buying digital, very upsetting
@@joehayes8795 that sucks
Being a Nintendo RUclipsr must be really fun
If you want to get super drunk…play a drinking game where you take a shot every time RGT says “things of that nature.”
Shawn, the whole monster system in SMT predates pokemon be several years dude
Yeah, as always SMT gets shafted 😂 😥
