there was not anything romantic between Tarja and Tuomas, he was married before she left the band and before she was married, this song is directed towards Tarja's husband/manager for many reasons, for clarification : Tuomas NEVER considered suicide EVER ! he has said so in several interviews, too many "newbie" fans getting carried away with the drama, btw , when you get to Yours Is An Empty Hope , do the Wembley 2015 version it s the best for audio, video, stage & performance, cheers ,luv your genuine enthusiasm for this amazing band & Floor. :)

@lanaeshonestopinion ... Just for clarification of misinformation that gets spread by some, it is easily confirmed in less than five minutes, from multiple sources, that Tuomas Holopainen and Johanna Kurkela were married October 28, 2015 and began dating in 2009 after Annette Olzon was selected as the 2nd singer of Nightwish. Tarja Turunen and Marcelo Cabuli (an Argentine businessman) were married December 31, 2002, although their marriage was not "formally celebrated" until July of 2003. Why it was kept quiet for that long a time is their own personal business that the public does not and should not know. She was dismissed from Nightwish October 21, 2005. Some have wrong-headed ideas in their minds with misremembering of dates and then use that to spread misinformation.

This song needs its own genre. Symphonic thrash metal. You would love the solo piece Tuomas did with his wife Johanna, called "A lifetime of adventure". The thing with Nightwish... they can do a brutal metal thrashy thing like this sooooo well, and then... if you play "sleeping sun", or "meadows of heaven"... you cannot believe it is the same band. They do such a range of music, and all so well. No other band can do this as well as Nightwish.

I concur, both of these wonderful songs sang by Annette, if you'd like to hear more from her, Lanae. I know you want to hear more Floor soon (who could blame you?) but Anette is overlooked a lot and she is wonderful in those songs.I'd suggest the lyric video of Meadows of Heaven and the live Montreaux Jazz Festival version of Slow Love Slow. There are a couple of live videos of Meadows... with Annette too, and she is quite good on them, but the video quality (fan phone) isn't great on one, and the better one is her solo with an orchestra outside of Nightwish. Worth it to hear her go full on gospel at the end but I'd suggest the studio release with lyric video first.

Tuomas: “After the [Tarja] split, the next few months were really, really dark. The things that really saved me from doing anything silly were my family, my close friends and the film The Village by M. Night Shyamalan. I watched it twice a day for weeks. That film made all the difference. Just the idea of this community living in peace in the middle of the wood, secluded from the world. Plus it has the best soundtrack ever written. It just filled me with comfort and hope. I was never suicidal, it wasn’t even close, but I was in a really dark place. It was the worst period of my life. Call it depression, but not suicidal. I want to make that clear.”

Yes, it is Marko singing. About 20 years ago he refused to work together with Tarja any longer. You can really hear his rage in this song. But times have changed and now Marko is again on stage together with Tarja. All band members (former and present) have become more adult. I think you are right with your impression that the band is really happy with Floor. You can see this during their concerts since 2012 - they are much more relaxed than before and often smile, Emppu and Floor even play tricks on each other. In an interview 2015 Tuomas said about Floor "she is at home now" and Floor calls the male band members her brothers.

Tuomas and Tarja have known each other for a really long time. Almost their whole life.
Tarja was 6 years old when she started playing the piano - her teacher was Tuomas' mother! Tuomas was 7 years old at the time.
They went to the same school, but because of the age difference of a year, they were in different classes. But of course they saw each other occasionally in the school corridors. And according to Tuomas, they greeted each other by nodding...
Tarja moved away from Kitee to another school in Kuopio, being there from the ages of 16-18. And by chance, in the same school where Marko Hietala had been 10 years before him! It was a music-focused high school, where both studied singing in particular.
Tuomas' and Tarja's (or the entire original Nightwish's) school music teacher organized musical events, where he gathered different groups of school students. Tarja could, for example, work as a singer. And Tuomas as a saxophone player!
    Today, their relationship is ok.
For example, when Tuomas' father died about 2 years ago, Tarja sent him her condolences.
Tuomas said he appreciated this act.
But they haven't seen each other since 2005...

This song is as much anger as it is sadness.
To me it feels like Tuomas didn't hate Tarja, he reserved all of that for Marcelo, blaming him entirely for her 'changing' and the rift:
"Hey Judas [Marcelo], your Christess [Tarja] was our love" and "seek her, seduce her, tame her".
He's painting this dynamic of Marcelo almost betraying Tarja and her being preyed on.
But they're still married, 20 years now with a daughter, and he seems to be good to her.
It's a really good song in itself, the music, Marko's vocals, the orchestra and the choir all go insanely hard in this ❣🤲🏽

The Poet and the Pendulum mostly deals with the emotions Tuomas went through after firing Tarja and all the hate he received for it. He kills himself in this song, you'll hear and see exactly when in the song it happens if you watch the video. The song also had a lot of references to "The Pit and the Pendulum", a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe first published in 1842. It should be ok to read the lyrics before listening. The song is split into 5 parts with different themes and titles. And make sure to watch the Wembley version with Floor.

No not only how Tuomas feels, the whole other Band Members (Emppu, Jukka and Marko) than Tarja feels about the same and the most strongest member saying/demanding Tarja and Marcello must leave was actually Marko - and now Marko and Tarja are again best of friends, so time will change and heel the feelings once you got the perspective to what happened and why.. To my understanding this song was created/recorded before Anette really joined the Band..

"To my everlasting shame, silence took me". I may be totally wrong but I think the last line of the song reveals the strong emotions of the song are directed as much to himself as anyone. If he tried to communicate earlier perhaps the situation could have been handled more gracefully? The result of this shame mixed with sadness and helplessness is suggested in Poet.

A cathartic expression of anger and frustration. There have always been rumors that Tuomas had romantic feelings for Tarja, and she never reciprocated that feelings. He has denied this, only admitting to loving her as a friend and she being a muse for his art. Only he really knows. Most of this album was written and some recorded before they chose Anette as Tarja’s replacement. Tuomas has long moved on from this period and is more content and he his indeed married, he has a side project with her and Troy. Bye Bye Beautiful official video does sometimes get blocked. This is the only Nightwish song with an explicative. Ready to watch your reaction to Poet and the Pendulum. Watch the Wembley version, the one with lyrics, but don’t focus too intently on them. Take the whole performance in. Don’t read lyrics first. Do it after. Enjoy!

The Poet is heartbreaking, his reaction to the butt-hurt Tarja fans. Hey, I get it, I've seen bands change and it hurts when you love them. Nightwish is greater and better than ever, so it worked out. Tuomas' wife is Johanna Kurkela, an incredible Finnish singer, who is in two bands you would probably love. The first is AURI, with Tuomas and Troy from Nightiwsh. It is melodic, calmer, and incredible to help you relax. She also sings in Eye of Melian, music based on Tolkien and fantasy. Th music is composed by Martijn Westerholt (brother of Within Temptation's composer and leader, Robert Westerholt). It's really beautiful, and Johanna's voice is amazing. She also did vocals on Tuomas' solo album "The Life and Times of Scrooge" - based on the graphic novel by Don Rosa of Scrooge McDuck (from Disney). All great listens ... you'll enjoy whether you react to them or not. There is a video of Poet with subtitles, so you can follow the lyrics.

First sorry for my English I'm French 😅but personally watching the documentaries, particularly the one on the beginnings of the group with Tarja, helped me I think, to understand a lot of things. Lots of alcohol, wild parties, not very healthy lifestyle... Tarja was never there, maybe that wasn't her thing and that's understandable, there was also a concert where a fan went on stage and sexually assaulted Tarja and the band didn't react and continued to play as if nothing had happened, that shocked me quite a bit. In short, I think that at the time they were completely different, probably immature and not very well psychologically, they were young... Floor might not have tolerated that at the time either. Today obviously at 50 they have matured, have more stable lives and are much more poised I think. There are surely faults on both sides, we will never know the whole story, it's sad that it happened like that but it's in the past.

Just also so you know, there has been some thawing of the ice in the relationship between Tarja and Tuomas, and even to an extent, Marco. One could also say that Floor's involvement contributed to this, albeit indirectly. When Floor came in to help save the tour and was subsequently offered the gig full time, Floor apparently asked Tarja for permission to join Nightwish, as they were friends prior to Floor coming in to help finish the tour. One could infer that that would have helped with a couple of things.
Secondly, Tuomas and Tarja are - at the very least - cordial with each other, especially in related to business. Somewhere along the way, they had to have talked in order for her last album with Nightwish, Once, to be re-released a couple of years ago. Additionally, one of Tuomas' parents recently died; one of the first condolences received, along with flowers, was from Tarja.
Finally, after Marco took time off and left the band, he also reconnected with Tarja, so whatever issues they had between each other has also gone away. They are even performing together, so that is a good thing.
In short, everyone involved is over this, including Anette; both Nightwish and Marco even wish her happy birthday and congratulations, as she now isn't only a singer, but EMT and registered nurse. Everyone involved are in much better places; the only ones that really aren't letting this go, are the fans, and justifiably so; it's hard to drop something like this, that is forever immortalized in song.

It hurt all of them and I believe in some ways it changed them all. You can hear Tuomas' hurt in these songs.

You got to understand that NW was a band started as friends from the same little town (Kitee, more of a village, 0n 1995 14 000 people only) and they were friends the first years. When Marcello came to the picture, he saw Tarja as the Star and the Talent of the band (of course a man in love would do this) and started to be Tarja's manager demanding better and bigger cuts to Tarja and convincing Tarja that he could continue without the rest of the band as Solo and be even bigger success (well that did not happen, did it). Also in some point the band asked Marcello to be the Manager of the whole band, but it ended on focusing on to improve Tarja's situation as the Star and some promises given by Marcello to the Band were broken and in the end Tarja and Marcello traveled separately to the venues and Tarja came only to the Soundcheck and Concert and then left away with Marcello. So from the other Band members it seemed, that Marcello was the snake coming and isolating Tarja from the band and breaking the whole dynamics and personal relationships within a band - Nightwish ended of being a Band anymore and this is shown in the faces and dynamics in the concerts especially when nearing the 2005 Last Concert. As the future and well being of the Band it was correct decisions and actions taken, whether the media and style were the best ones one can debate, but the situation was so inflamed and the band was so close to end, that the critical situation was decided to be ended by firing Tarja. History shows this to be the correct decision. But of course, when you end up in feud with one of your best childhood friends and especially if there were any romantic feelings, then there always will be also a back slash and feelings of depression etc. as a result (out of this came "Poet and the Pendulum). This song was made in the heat of angry and betrayed feelings towards Marcello, a steam vent went off and every negative feelings was erupted to the song. But when asked from Tuomas why didn't he burry or cancel this song, he said that songs overall are composed to tell a story and feelings of any subject of the song or thoughts and this song is representing them also, so why hide, it is a part of History of NW and tells a story from that time..

That had to be a bit of time.

NW filmed their journey/tour towards the last concert with Tarja. It's a 58.42 min. long docu. YT-er Nimwey nl pieced all the episodes together. It shows you Tarja and Marcello and the mood of the guys. So you get impression of how it was back then. After your reaction to The Poet and the Pendulum it may be a good idea to go to some happier times. In 2014 NW started to rehearse their new album (8th) which became the album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". They filmed the whole process in a 22 episode docu "Making of a New Album". YT-er Nimwey also pieced them together in a 2hr 19 min. video. It would be fun if you could do perhaps a live stream (or react to it in parts ) so we all can watch it together. You see a happy band working! Greetings and a lovely weekend!

The third is Poet and the Pendulum. It's not that Tuomas wanted to kill himself, but he killed NW as we knew it till then.
MPG is pure rage made into one awesome piece of music. My favorite angry song 🖤🤘🏽

I couldn't have gotten into Nighwish with Tarja or Anete, like I do with Floor. It is all a matter of opinion, and some people love Tarja with Nightwish most. Read the lyrics first, but you don't want a lot of stops in the song. As far as the drama over the firing over Tarja, I tend to believe the band over Tarja and Marcello. During The Poet and the Pendulum watch Tuomas' face as the song progresses he gets more and more emotionally involved.

Tuomas was never actually suicidal (he said so in an interview). His figurative death on stage was his way of killing off part of his old-self, with a re-birth of his new-self/better-self. When you react to Poet and the Pendulum pay very close attention to the line "now I only have 3 minutes and counting" (literally 😉). And Floor in Poet.... holy shit man, she's good!!!

When doing The Poet (Tuomas is the Poet), make sure you have Lyrics turned on and in that way "get it all" (or much of it) in that first listen, The song is amazing in it self but the lyrics is most important, you will feel the music anyway, and you will probably need to listen to it multiple times to "get it". also pay attention to the timing in the song since there might be some references there ;)

Thank you, Miss Lanae, for continuing your NW journey. While I have only been a fan for about 3-4 years, I know that knowledge-wise I am a Noob! I hit the like button on everybody's NW reactions, but through the comments to you, I have learned sooo much more about the rich history that is Nightwish. How you've managed to bring this history out of the elder members of the Nightwish Army is (in my opinion), due to your own obvious love for this band. My sincere thank you for this. Add me to the list that suggests that you are ready for Poet and Pendulum. BTW, I have always liked that song, but through the comments to you, I now understand sooo much more about it. P.S. please do Floor's husband's band Sabaton soon. My favorite song, "No Bullets Fly" (the animated version), always reduces me to tears. Bring a box of tissues when you watch it.

As far as the “mood” of the band, remember that all of the Tarja songs you have watched so far have been from the night of “End of an Era”…not exactly a happy show and a fairly dark night for the boys.
That being said, there is a much more visible comradery with Floor, I think her personality and mindset has always been “she’s just one of the guys” where as Tarja saw herself differently. Just my thoughts…

Lanae, no apologies are required. You are one of my favorite reactors right now. A lot of that is _because_ of the things you apologize for. It is so satisfying to see your excitement and the effect it has on you. Some might call it giddy. Whatever. Your giddiness makes my giddy as well.😁Or maybe "sparkly" fits better. ✨Whatever label you put on the feeling, it is just what Nightwish does to people. To see it so clearly with you is a treasure. Keep it up.
As for the lyrics to Poet and the Pendulum, I agree with some others that you should read through the lyrics (perhaps several times) and ponder them in context. Kudos on having already done the research to know what that context was. The Wembley 2015 live performance is so powerful and emotional, having been exposed to the lyrical content beforehand will allow you to soak in the rest of the song easier.

On the topic of Tuomas's relationship, I think his wife is Johanna Kurkela, who features with symphonic metal bands from time to time if I'm not mistaken - in fact, I think she features in Song of Myself by Nightiwsh, in the spoken lines at the end, as well as on Tuomas's solo album, the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck (yes, seriously).
I never actually knew this song was about Marcelo though, I just got shivers reading the lyrics in that light for the first time.

This us probably the heaviest (and angriest!) Nightwish song. There IS a female singer. You can clearly hear Anette in the chorus.
Dark Passion Pay is an album - the title of it is a line and chapter heading in The Poet And the pendulum. Master Passion Greed and The poet and The Pendulum are both on the album.
BTW, The Poet And The Pendulum is going to blow you away. Seriously. A true emotional roller coaster and one of the greatest Nightwish songs. The live version is Floor at her best. Definitely listen to the song first then read the lyrics. There is a live version with on-screen lyrics available anyway, which is the one I would recommend reacting to.

    • @athlonen
      @athlonen 2 месяца назад +1

The Chorus? That was clearly done by the London Metro Voices Choir, and well before Anette. This was at the time when they were having the background vocals for this song as well as the symphonic elements recorded at Abbey Road with the Metro Voices Choir and the London Sessions Orchestra. Both are prevalent in this song. Additionally, one can tell that this was recorded before Anette came along as both this song and the demo for the Poet and the Pendulum were recorded with only Marco's vocals, along with the alternate lyrics. Both of these are on the deluxe version of the Dark Passion Play album.

    • @TheRealRedAce
      @TheRealRedAce 2 месяца назад

@@athlonen I wasn't talking about the the backing track, but the song chorus, which clearly has a female voice in it. The demos are hardly the same as the tracks on the actual album!

    • @athlonen
      @athlonen 2 месяца назад

@@TheRealRedAce I agree that the demos are not the same as the tracks on the album, but it does provide you a timeline of what was happening and when. For example, you hear a woman’s voice in the chorus for TPATP, but as you can clearly hear from the demo, the song was essentially done, but the lyrics were changed and re-recorded to be more radio friendly.
As for Master Passion Greed, the Chorus was sung by the Metro Voices Choir, because Anette hadn’t joined the band yet. In fact, there are multiple women’s voices in the Chorus; there is even a clip on RUclips of just the choir for this track. They are present in the chorus.

Dark Passion Play was the first album without Tarja/With Anette. Tuomas once said that the next album (half the songs featured in the Imaginaerum Tour at Wacken - e.g. Storytimee, Song of Myself, Dark Chest of Wonders, Last Ride of the Day - were from the (at the time) new album and it was a fresh start from the "dark cloud that has been hanging over us." Until, at least, things were festering with Anette. By the time Floor was hired in October 2012 to finish the tour (not as a permanent replacement) the band was feeling a lot of relief - the main reason she was ultimately permanently hired. Sure, she had a great voice and presence, but it was more than that. She was/is a person who makes the effort in what she does. She was already making the effort to learn Finnish when she was hired, had moved to Finland even. The band appreciated her push to belong. The vocals on the latest album were due came before she was ready to return after birth, so the band was willing to accept her offer to record them in her home studio.

Last comment (I promise!). Regarding the Poet and the Pendulum. As others mentioned, it is based off of the Pit and the Pendulum, by Edgar Allen Poe. In that short story, Poe writes about a person strapped on an altar, in which the pendulum above him is slowly lowering and lowering until it kills him. While strapped, the person (in the first person) begins recalling his life and events of his life leading up to that point where he is. As you read already, Tuomas thought it would be cathartic to kill himself in this song, so he did it by inserting himself - and by extension, Nightwish - into the The Pit and the Pendulum, hence The POET and the Pendulum. Tuomas uses many different means to refer to himself in various songs. He refers to himself as The Beast (from the Beauty of the Beast), The Poet, or The Dead Boy (Romanticide, Dead Boy's Poem). He has also referred to Tarja as the Beauty, so one could get that inference as well. But For the Poet and the Pendulum - as well as all of Nightwish's songs, the interpretation of the song is always in the eye of the listener. In The Poet and the Pendulum, Tuomas could be referring to himself, or to Nightwish altogether, as they embark on new journeys with their new singer at the time, Anette Olzon.

No. Tarja and Tuomas KNEW each other. I wouldn't say they were friends or enemies. Think small town school. Tarja was heading off in the direction to become a professional event singer, Tuomas was forming a Finnish folk band. They did performances together in music courses in school - their paths crossed. When in Nightwish, Tuomas was adamant that the band members gave 110% (Marko was not the original bass player). When Tarja got married, she didn't want to attend rehearsals and Tuomas was particularly peeved about her cancelling the Oslo concert. He wasn't in love - he was angry (which led to the unfortunate idea to publish the letter). It's not as provable, but it's likely that problems in Anette's life were also the reason she was fired. She had legal issues and health issues. Initially Tuomas told her that he'd find someone to fill in, but that was only possible for one or two shows (where Amaranth lead singer "winged it" on the day at the urging of the audience who was given the opportunity to get their money back. Ultimately, Anette was let go (something she was angry about). Marko made a compliment about how Floor was a professional - but it also sounded a little like he implied that Anette sometimes wasn't. Anette's life did become complicated, and this led to her being fired. The difference here was that Tuomas learned from the past mistake when firing Tarja.

I gave it some thought, and here's what I think.
Do not read the lyrics beforehand. I think you can hear them quite well. Still I recommend you to choose the video on Nightwish's own channel. It is with lyrics, but you can ignore the lyrics as much as you want to - as important as they are, especially in this song - while reacting, but there are sections, (the very beginning for example) on the song/video when it's good to see the lyrics, and they won't be much of a distraction, and you can focus on reading them, not missing anything else. When the song, performance ends (Floor: "Thank You!"), end your reaction by going through the lyrics.
I'm one of those who doesn't concentrate on lyrics first time listening. I concetrate on the music, vocals as an instrument, staging, performance, the overall feeling it gives. That is more than enough for my brain. If I love the song then I want to know the lyrics as well.
The song is devided into 5 parts:
    White Lands of Empathica
    Home
    The Pacific
    Dark Passion Play
    Mother and Father
Someone mentioned the song "Slaying the Dreamer" another angry song by Tuomas directed to all those in music business who belittled him as a musician, songwriter.
In this case I think you could read the lyrics before reacting. Both versions are great.
End of an Era DVD 2005 with Tarja and Marko
Decades Tour Buenos Aires 2018 with Floor and Marko
Tuomas decided to tone down the original lyrics before recording the song. Still angry enough, I would say.

A very good reaction to this hidden gem. As I told you, it is much heavier than BBB, both in terms of thematic approach and the artistic means used. And it is absolutely understandable why this song has never been performed live, in concerts.
MPG is a masterpiece, because it has the unique quality of reminding us of the experiences of similar personal situations, on an emotional level. You know, that moment when you helplessly witness an accident that is about to happen.
From the point of view of the composition, for me it is fascinating to listen to how, after the last verse, all the instruments except the drums are replaced one by one by the instruments of the symphony orchestra. As the waters of a river are lost / swallowed / dispersed, when they pour into the boundless ocean. I've never heard it before, and I don't think I'll ever hear anything like it again.
As for "The Poet.." - yes, the lyrics are significant. But you better read them separately, before or after, if they distract you from the audio-video performance.

No need to read P&P lyrics first. I don’t think it has any vocals you wouldn’t hear. About that master piece, it is not a song. It is very close to musical metal theather.
The reason why we NW fans don’t want people to see P&P as their first NW performance, is simply that we don’t want anyone to jump in to deep end of the pool before we know they can swim 🙂 I think this ”Master Passion Greed” is also one of those which we wish people to hear only after they have experienced the beauty and warm emotions from the other songs first. I think you can understand P&P, even without the background story, but when it touches your soul, it is good to know why.

  • @rnowak85
    @rnowak85 2 месяца назад +1

Great reaction. Never performed live since it is clearly about a specific person and Tuomas said it wouldn't be appropriate to perform live. Tuomas said they performed Poet and the Pendulum live because while it drew on his personal experiences it was broadly relatable and can be interpreted in different ways by the listener (something that is very important to Tuomas).
So lets address the whole Tuomas was in love with Tarja thing. First there is no evidence that Tuomas was in love with Tarja. Tuomas nor anybody around him has ever stated that. In fact the only mention of it in the media is from Tarja's husband after they fired her. I would hardly consider him a reliable source since he was probably trying to do some damage control and discredit their open letter. I think that is why the band chose to go the open letter route. They didn't trust him to not try and spin things. At the end of the day no one really knows if Tuomas was in love with Tarja. Like I learned long ago with my divorced parents, I love them both and I ignore anything they say about each other because I know they both have agenda's. I view the open letters less as accurate recitation of events and more as insights into what people were feeling.
Dark Passion Play is the first album with Annette after they parted with Tarja. Many of the songs were written prior to Annette being chosen as the new singer. In fact their is a demo version of Poet with only Marko singing. Regarding the band interaction remember that things between the band and Tarja had not been good for several years and I think you have only seen Tarja performances from End of an Era which is why the energy between the band and the singer was different. I think if you see some of the bands earlier performances with Traja the interaction is better and more similar to the what the band has with Floor. Check out something from the Wishes to Eternity concert.
One other point to clarify. Tuomas has said that he was never suicidal after the firing of Tarja. He was definitely severely depressed from the backlash of the Nightwish fans. He returned home to recover and decide the future of Nightwish. Writing the song was a cathartic process that helped him process his feelings. I think the statement he killed himself in the song so he wouldn't do it real life is more metaphorical then literal.
How to watch Poet? For me the lyrics are the most meaningful part of Poet. Thee music is a perfect accompianment to those lyrics but he lyrics are what always hits me and are what makes this song so emotionally meaningful. It feels like Tuomas is bearing and sharing his soul with us. My preferred way is to watch with captions or subtitles on so you get the lyrics. If it gets to be to much of a distraction then you can just ignore them or turn them off. After you watch give a quick take on your initial feelings and then go read the analysis of the song by the artist Annika Hausen. Best analysis of the song and the meaning of the lyrics I have ever read. Just google her name and Poet and it will take you there. Then come back on your video and give a deeper dive into the song and your emotions. Because there are going to be a lot of them.
