Mike admires most those that came before him. People think Mike is stupid because of his speech, but hes a historian of the sport and paid massive respect to those that came before him.

I can’t believe most interviewed here. It is apparent that most don’t know that much about Sonny Liston. Yes, Tyson was faster. He was also a hard hitter and had excellent footwork. But head to head, both in their prime (not Liston when he fought Ali-he was much older than stated age and past his prime)? Cus D’Amato was Tyson’s coach and trainer, and favored the peek-a-boo style. Floyd Patterson also used this style and was under D’Amato. Sonny destroyed Patterson-the style didn’t matter to Sonny. Who did Mike ever fight that was of the same caliber as Liston? Liston’s 15 inch hands, 84 inch reach, a jab that could knock one out (which was better than that of L. Lewis btw) and power (only matched by Foreman and Shavers) would have given Mike a challenge. Foreman telegraphed his punches, Liston did not-he could knock a fighter out from a stance. He was very balanced. Comparing speed, footwork, style etc becomes less relevant when a boxer takes a big shot, a liver shot for instance. Tyson did not have a great chin. And the things we usually don’t measure-the heart of a champion, or in Liston’s case, the monster that made the Bear. Both Tyson and Liston were the baddest men on the planet. Marciano didn’t have style or grace, nor good footwork but he just kept coming, just kept trading blows and hit hard. Sonny was the only fighter that consistently pushed back Big George Foreman. These are the things that would have made both fighters dangerous to one another, that killer instinct. Sonny Liston was more intimidating imo and this and the inner demons that fuel a fighter to continue to want to destroy the other have to be taken into account. In this fantasy realm of make believe, Liston the enforcer takes it.
Floyd was a Lhw first off,so doesnt matter which style he used he always would be destroyed for that reason alone,
so stop that quote of style cause it wouldnt had mattered he was facing a real hw when he was a lhw do the myth...

Foreman may telegraph his punches but one of the best ducker of all times Joe Frazier couldn't dodge punches, because of Georges accuracy and timing, he also hits harder than Liston and physically stronger too, he had much better timing than Liston and Liston has one of the worst accuracy ever, and he can't box aswell, Floyd Patterson would beat him but reason why he couldn't is that Liston weights 35 lbs more than Patterson and is one of the strongest (physically) boxers ever, and both of the time he beat patterson because floyd was in the corner, if it was long range fight Patterson would outbox him, Liston couldn't land single shot until floyd got to corner, Liston lost to some journeyman Leotis Martin and Marshy Martall, Mike knocks him tf out
@@TemurTheConqeuror Nah, we're talking "in their prime", and in his prime, Liston would have defeated Martin. Liston was maybe 40+ at that point. In a long bout it starts to matter. If you watched Liston's 2 fights against Cleveland Williams, you wouldn't say Liston was a slow slugger type. I think a reason Foreman kept Frzier at a distance was down to his strength, and Foreman admitted Liston was as strong as him (he used to spar with him). Liston's accuracy, reactions & footwork slowed as he aged, & over the course of a longish fight. Though not many of his fights were long. An Ali vs Liston fight *when Liston was at his peak* would have been interesting, though Ali might have outfoxed & outboxed him, again. Liston didn't need to land many punches "square on" & it was game over more or less

Sonny Liston‘s boxing career didn‘t begin with an old wise men finding him. It began in one of the toughest prisons at the time, and he was knocking everybody out in the Boxing Programm. Everybody feared him to death, not in the ring but in the real world.
The Mafia that ruled over the heavyweight division heard of him that way, so they used him as a legbreaker and helped him grow as a fighter.
The man was real dead inside, and a serious monster.
They go with Tyson because Liston is a forgotten fighter.. only ever remembered by many for the two controversial fights with Ali.

I would pick Sonny Liston. I´m a big M. Tyson fan, but Sonny Liston was not only a mean tough guy, who can punches really, really hard. He was mentally strong and had a fantanstic, powerfull left jab and moves well, too. Buster Douglas had a good jab and moved well, too. By the way M. Tyson in his prime don´t fought Holyfield, Lewis, Bowe and later he loses the tough challenges, so i can´t say, how he would have performed in his prime against these guys.

Ita a bad matchup for Tyson, Liston Jabs better than Lennox, hes got crazy Foreman type power, Lison and Foreman was similar fighters, and tyson is very similar to Frazier.
I dont think Tyson would be able to knock Liston out early, when it goes to distance Liston is gaining a lot of advantage i think.
Floyd Patterson was great, better than Tyson and was in a better rra than Tyson's and Liston destroyed him, Liston too me might have took a dive against Ali both times bc the mafia was involved in listons outside of the ring life after or before Ali, Ali dominated both fights and liston was underwhelming, maybe Ali would win anyway but Sonny was not great in those fights.

Mike Tyson is one of my favorites and so is Sonny Liston, Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, Harry Greb, Hagler, Hearns, sugar Ray. Tyson even said Liston was viscous and extremely intimidating.

@@yoursufferingismycomfort7150 Main reason I would have Tyson winning is mainly due to the difference in skill. Patterson isn’t as skilled as Mike. You could argue Liston never fought a style like Tyson due to Mike being explosive, great footwork, good conditioning, combo puncher, defensively sound and has excellent head movement. Speed and power in both hands is just a bonus along with his good chin. Still don’t think it would be an easy fight though since Liston is just a freak of nature physical but at the end of the day skills pay the bills and Tyson got the skills🤷♂️

Liston hand is so big for a 1.86m guy you can tell that he would be 2.10m . He was much more intimidating and dangerous than Tyson. Has much more power and is much more aggressive.

Sonny never saw a Rottweiler like Mike. His jab would have been useless because of Tyson's upper body movement and his quick footwork to get inside. Sonny could take a punch, but Mike threw BOMBS and both hands were quick and dangerous. I think a young Mike destroys any heavyweight in history with the possible exception of Foreman and Ali. Foreman could land devastating uppercuts from outside and Ali could basically neutralize anything and outsmart anyone.
liston had the best jab in boxing history he used to knock people tuth with it buster duglas used his jab to defet tyson and sonny liston had even a better jab tyson head movment will not help him against sonny liston, in fact no one in boxing history can beat a prime liston even ali, ali fought a 45 years old liston.

@@thegoat6116 You cannot compare the Tyson that fought Douglas to a prime Tyson, Tyson was a thin shell of the fighter he was under Cus at that point. He was doped out of his mind and not training when he fought Douglas. Far too many people arent old enough to know that was Tyson after he stopped caring, 19-25 range Tyson was unstoppable.
Prime Tyson couldn't put away Greene or quick Tillis, Liston was very old by the time he fought Ali and out of shape. If anyone stepped to Liston they got destroyed you had to run from him before you had a chance. Where prime Tyson looked better then any heavyweight ever, there were plenty of guys in his prime that could take his shots into late rounds. And the guys who wouldn't back up he had trouble with, when they tied him up he was pushed around because the peek a boo style is squared up. Liston had long reach and could grapple well on the inside which Tyson was shit at. Prime Foreman said he was bullied by an old Liston and Foreman would have smashed Tyson to dust. When Liston was prison champ they had to put more then one opponent in with him just to make it competitive

Liston probably had the hardest jab in history, a phenomenal right hand counter extremely hard as well and he is heavier handed than tyson. Tyson is more explosive and quicker. Not a doubt in my mind that two fighters who would've had Mike crapping in his pants before they both whipped the snot out of him were George Foreman and Sonny Liston. When Cus D'matto managed Floyd Patterson, he emphatically wanted Patterson to avoid Liston because he knew Sonny would absolutely pummel him. Patterson only fought Liston after he fired D'matto, and in both cases, Cus was correct. Floyd was pretty much a smaller version of Tyson with a very similar "peek-a-boo" style, and Liston beat Floyd like a drum in two fights, both lasting about three minutes combined. And a Foreman vs Tyson fight wouldn't have been much different than the two fights when Foreman battered Joe Frazier. Even Tyson himself reportedly said that there was no way he could've beaten Liston, and we all know that Tyson backed out of fighting a 40-something-year-old Foreman in the 90s.

Liston is forgotten amongst most boxing fans and even people that have been around for decades don't know anything about Liston other than the Ali fights. He was a freak; he had great yet subtle defence, incredible head movement was one of his main defensive quality's and an effective shoulder roll, he had George Foreman's power with Joe louis' technique, unnaturally long arms and unnaturally big fists( 84 inch reach 7'2 and 15 inch fists) He had an amazing chin but people wouldn't know that because they only know the Ali fights even though he had taken shots from powerhouses like Cleveland 'big cat' Williams. An incredible gas tank even though most fights didn't go 15 rounds, the only thing he didn't accel in was his overall speed but with everything else he had going for him it didn't matter in the slightest. Also the hardest jab in history.
Nothing mike could do could startle or stop Liston; it would be one of the first time he went up against someone who could bully him on the inside with raw strength and hit harder with less effort. Liston would stop him in 6-8 rounds pummeling him with the jab and stopping his advancement with his frames. Aggressiveness doesn't matter because Liston was an immovable object and the strongest fighter of all time.
Liston would beat every heavyweight ever except maybe prime Ali and even that isn't a guarantee, if you don't believe me do your own research on the man. Because the people that know about Liston would agree with me.

Liston was between 36 and 44 years old when he fought Ali the first time, and Ali was still staying away from Liston. Prime Sonny Liston would have beaten every heavyweight ever except maybe prime Ali.
