Calzaghe was good but overrated. He had a chance to fight Roy Jones when Jones was the P4P fighter of the decade during their era but he had no willingness to leave the security of his home shores. I'm a Calzaghe support er but the truth can't be ignored. Roy was simply on another level and he beat all kinds of styles that Calzaghe NEVER faced in his career. Calzaghe barely got by an older Bernard Hopkins and was still dropped hard on his face in a fight that is still debated to this day as to the victor. He was dropped by a Jones who had been knocked out twice on a 3 fight losing streak who was clearly diminished as a force. Roy beat a PRIME Hopkins, Tony, Devalle, Reggie Johnson ( who was as slick and slippery as they come) and then toyed with John Ruiz a Heavyweight 25 pounds bigger who in spite of his ugly style and limitations was still able to be in the mix in the division. Calzaghe would be very hard pressed to deal with a man who was infinitely faster than him, hit MUCH harder than him, had ten times better reflexes and legs and who wouldn't make it easy by staying in the pocket like the buggers Joe was accustomed to. This would in all probability look like the thrashing Roy put on Pazienza.

In a lb4lb, it's Ray Leonard. Leonard could take a punch, was blazingly fast, the best combination fighter in history(storms of punches with power), could box exactly as boxer would or punch exactly as a puncher would, had better mobility than Roy, and was too fast to counterpunch. This is the fight: Holmes+Walcott(but faster than they were and without their chin)* VS AIi+Holyfield(but even better with combinations than they were)!
*There are differences in AIi and Holmes: it's the quality of movement and the combination ability. When some fighters use combinations, the punches continually flow! When others throw combinations, their rate of speed slows down beyond the 1-2. As they use 3+ punches, they are slower with subsequent punches. For Jones, this might be splitting hairs because he was so fast already and you may think this slowdown does not matter!
However, both these guys were blazingly fast and Leonard did not have this problem! It's that weakness that can make it easier to counter you--if your opponent knows what to look for. I mentioned that not because Ray was a counterpuncher, but to make this show up more. I believe that combination challenged fighters know they have this flaw and that's why you see them almost all of the time throwing 1 or 2 punches at a time!

Leonard beat Benitez, Duran, Hearns and Hagler. Roy beat Hopkins, Toney, McCallum and Hill. Both are great boxers. Jones was gifted. More so even than Leonard. He had incredible natural speed and power even more than Ray had. Two phenomenal athletes as boxers. Ray was a much better boxer as far as how he boxed. Much better. Using the jab and movement and body shots, hooks, right hands, you name it. He slipped and blocked punches and was toughas nails. Jones could be hurt. He relied on his God given speed and power, more so than Ray did. Ray could take punches and come back and win.
The young welterweigh Tommy Hearns is pound for pound better than any boxer Roy fought in his career. Duran P4P is the best of them all, IMO. Best lightweight, ever. Yet, Ray beat him well above lightweight. I think Ray is the slightly better boxer all around Than Jones, toughness, will to win even when you are behind going late into the bout like he was against Hearns. Also. Ray had a great chin, really. Camacho beat Ray when Ray was 40 years old long after his best days when he was mostly out of boxing for many years. Ray one of the best P4P boxers, ever. Duran and Leonard, a bit above the rest like Hopkins, Jones, Hearns, Toney, Benitez, etc.

Roy (forget the dq against Griffin) didn't lose until he was almost 35-36 years old and that was after winning the heavyweight title. As for his competition, James Toney, BHop, Virgil Hill, Mike McCallum, Reggie Johnson, Montell Griffin, Jeff Lacy, Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, John Ruiz, Jorge Castro...he should have retired after beating Ruiz. Undefeated and 50-0. Nobody was beating Roy until he pushed himself too far coming down from heavyweight. Tarver would never have beaten Roy in the early to mid 90s. He caught him at the right time.
