The overhead power line is a catenary. The device on the train that touches it is a pantograph. The main advantage of electric power is that the train itself does not pollute, so there is less need of air circulation in the underground stations. Having the feed wire overhead reduces the chance of electrocution if someone goes onto the tracks (though they may still be hit by a train).
Awesome video i rode it for the first time last weekend during a convention near Lyon Station :) it was a cool system it was broken though on Thu and Fri but worked on Sat and on
I was just there in Ottawa less than a week ago for the first time, the first thing I noticed was the smell of the subway(lrt) and how it smells exactly like the TTC lol!
TTC's Line 6, otherwise known as the Finch West LRT which will open sometime in 2024 will use the same Alstom trains that OCTranspo uses for their Line 1 (Confederation Line)! It'll be cool seeing them in traffic aswell as underground, I just hope it wont be as loud as it was when I rode it lol.
I wonder & hope the Alstom Citadis Sprit LRVs for Line 6 Finch West in Toronto will travel at the same speed as the O-Train despite being 90% at grade. It wouldn't be very promising if it travelled the same speed as the existing 36 Finch West bus.
I was there two months ago with my dad (we went on a road trip to Ottawa). The hotel that we stayed at - is situated within footsteps at one of the stations (in this case, Lyon Station)! Me and my dad on the other hand - used our PRESTO Cards during our stay. Most recently, they're testing out credit card payments on the system.
@@AlexGetsAroundTO you bet, dude! I also got the PRESTO Card that has the white and red background (I was lucky - I copped one at one of the ticket machines). Although the design looks different, it functions like the black (and green) version of the PRESTO Card.

Tbh i wishes they just ditched LRT in Favour of a hybrid (elevated and underground) subway system cuz it’s clear that a train braking down like every day isn’t the way to go. And it would’ve been easy to implement a subway. Just add the electric rail, use steel wheel cars, weather proof the thing, make it an elevated floor train and not a low floor train and buy a RELIABLE train set (like an R160B) or the MR63 (except that’s for concrete lines).
Looking at the stations, I cant help but wonder if a heavy metro should have been built instead(or at least a trains more akin to the REM, DLR, Lines that use Innovia Metro) Also the stations look big enough for island platforms This literally the 1st time I watched a relatively indepth vid on this line so just giving my 1st impressions
Will you plan to film the Trillium line after it reopens? Will you also film the LRT in Kitchener-Waterloo one day? The exit signs on the TTC subway use the classic red 'EXIT' sign while the O-Train use the green running man exit sign. Johnny Strides has also been to Ottawa recently.
I'm not sure when the Trillium line reopens, one day I will film the ION LRT in Kitchener, I'm aware of those differences and I know, I watch Johnny all the time
Seems like they're doing the whistle thing that TTC used to do until the 90s. Btw since Ottawa is also in Ontario does OC Transpo also use Presto like TTC?
@@AlexGetsAroundTO Yeah no problem, its interesting that Lyon stn is pronounced as “Lion” even though the name of the store Leons is pronounced in the french pronunciation.
Worst train ever. Currently shut down indefinitely due to trains derailing and catching fire but has been nothing but problems since day 1. Toronto should not use the same vehicle.
@@AlexGetsAroundTO There’s nothing wrong with this train/tram set. The problem is with how it’s being used. This is a tram set, not a subway set. It’s designed to be used on surface lines running on streets, with low speeds, frequent stops and thus has fewer doors that are lighter duty. There was no need for low floor tram sets in Ottawa, where the system has full grade separation. Should have just used Bombardier or Kawasaki high floor sets.

I would agree but didnt one time some teens threw super large snowballs at the catenary and shut down the system?
thanks for this video. I'm going to be riding the O-train tomorrow for the first time and this gives me a good insight on what to expect.

just before the derailment causing the closure which is still closed today. Thanks for checking out Ottawa's system!

Yeah I mentioned that in the video. When I rode the LRT, it was sharp and really loud when it curves throughout the line.
By alstom trains you mean the Alstom Citadus Spirit right?
And as what you saying “as loud” me being a citizen of ottawa that is both a captian obvious move and a offense
SINCE EVERY GOD DAM CITIZEN OF OTTAWA KNOWS HOW LOUD IT IS AND WE ACTUALLY KIND OF LIKE IT

Yup it does, you can actually see at the beginning I tapped on with my Presto card
Toronto is so much more busier even during off-peak hours
Instead of a third rail like they have in the Toronto subway, they have a rail above the train, like a streetcar. Thanks for pointing that out Alex!
It's a wire.
OC Transpo takes Presto, while the other agency STO doesn't; they use Multi.
Did you notice on the map that there is a Bayview Station like on Line 4?
Yea I went to Bayview station in a different video
I actually thought that only the Confederation line was called the O Train and the Trillium line was called something else. I guess not
The Trillium line, opened in 2001, was called the O-train but with the Confederation line opening, the branding was extended to include both lines.
