It occurred to me while watching these, Twogami and Mahiru were kind of like the Team Dad and Team Mom. They tried to take care of everyone, but also tried to keep everyone in line as well. It really emphasizes the void made when the two of them were the first ones to be murdered. Even worse, the next two (Mikan and Nekomaru) also took it upon themselves to watch over and care for the others, though I would define them as more older sibling-esque. And then THEY were killed off. And then Nagito's plan ended in Chiaki and Usami, the Observers charged with watching over everyone, getting executed. Essentially, almost all the guardian figures in the group died.

Yeah. Mikan took care of Fuyuhiko, Nagito, Akane, and Ibuki. Suppose she had not been inflicted with the despair disease, she would surely have been an important ally to the survivors.

I really do like Mihiru. She gives the "you're so hopeless" comments but that's her way of showing she cares. Kind of like a scolding mother which she does give the vibe of it. Not to mention, she also sounds like she's ungrateful towards anything people say to her but she gives a reason why she felt that way. Her personality is well balanced. Makes me wish that people didn't portray her as a misandrist who makes mean comments to everyone.
I think that position is for the most unlikable girl in the game to me. That being Hiyoko.
+Johnf3545 Hiyoko gets a pass for me, i mean, she did, as soon as i found out she was supposed to live during chapter 3, and continue growing as a character until the very end, while Fuyuhiko, who pretty much had reached his final point during chapter 3, was supposed to die instead.
They switched that very late in the devlopement, as they suddently felt like fanboys/girls would start flame wars if Peko's sacrifice turned out to be useless in the end.
I do believe him dying during chapter 3 would have been a very impactful moment, especially due to the fact that Mikan had no real motive for killing him, as he was just the unfortunate guy, like Hiyoko turned out to be.
I honestly think it’s inappropriate to call Mahiru a misandrist. Sure her father was a shit parental figure, but it’s not like she hates guys in general. She just wants to interact with guys who aren’t like her father
@@Johnf3545 After finishing her FTEs, I can't even really dislike Hiyoko that much. She's like Fuyuhiko in a lot of ways, but she never really had anyone to look out for her like Fuyu had Peko until she met Mahiru, nor did she have the chance to properly develop like Fuyu did after losing her. There's a reason she almost took Fuyuhiko's survivor spot.
She was also honestly the last holdout of unlikable characters out of all the DR2 students for me. Such an amazing cast is one of the biggest reasons I love this game so much more than DR1.

Am I the only one who is absolutely in love with Mahiru and not with Chiaki or Akane? (Not saying I hate them.) I mean, she's just so nice and caring with a bit of tsundere tones. Why dont people love her? I love her!

Mahiru was basically a mom. She didnt want Fuyuhiko to kill anyone in the end, and had once said that all she wanted to do is to befriend everyone again.
She's more relatable to me I guess. I just understood her more than the rest.
In addition, she never held a grudge on anyone if you think about it. She may have nagged... A LOT. But, she never ever said anything about wishing for someone to die. In the DR3 anime, it seemed that she didnt actually know about Sato's plan of murder. She just believed her when she said "She didnt kill her."
She NEVER said she hated Fuyuhiko's sister. She never held a grudge. She wanted to believe in her friends. That's all she's ever done.
The one thing I COULD hate her for is her stereotype on men. Buuut seeing how Danganronpa here uses adult themes (Like pedophilia and abusive parents) like, A LOT, I think I could let that slide.
My favourites are Mahiru and Hiyoko. Idk why, but I've always liked them.
I didn't go into this game expecting Mahiru -- one of the least interesting looking characters -- to have my favourite free time story.

Now that you mention the idea of someone keeping a record of everyone in Mahiru's place, all I imagine is that if FTEs could actually influence the game Hajime could potentially fill that role if he gets to the end of her FTEs before she dies. ...I mean I'd prefer an outcome where maybe talking her issues out with Hajime could somehow potentially lead to her NOT dying, but someone trying to carry on the torch for her so to speak would have also been nice.

Wasn't Dangonronpa 2 the one with the twist that the island was a computer simulation, and everyone survived except Chiaki due to already being dead before the events of the game.
Same it’s weird I love her design which is one of the least weird ultimate designs I juts like her short red hair and freckles it really accentuated her outdoorsy nature as a photographer and her little checkered tie pattern which seems like it would also be used for picnic blankets and the way it goes over her vest is adorable and although it’s simplistic it’s what I love about her

Tenko is a far more annoying character. Mahiru is just a sweet girl who has somewhat high standards for men.
Despite their few similarities, Tenko and Mahiru are super different from each other.
- Mahiru grew up with a father that left her to do everything in the house. So that’s where she developed her stereotypical views that men should work hard and protect women, but she doesn’t hate men or believe women are superior to men. She just has higher standards for them and is into gender roles.
- Tenko was a naive person who believed what her master said and ended up hating men, thinking that they should all die. She believes that women are superior to men.
Mahiru is more like a caring mother who shows you tough love and wants the best. Tenko is an immature child who believes anything anyone tells her.

I guess the reason people hated her is because her Free Time events weren't introduced in a way. Before the game was even released in the US but somewhat translated in youtube, her Free time wasn't even up and people might have gotten the wrong impression out of her.
I love Mahiru's strong personality and brashness.

first of all, i think mahiru is one of the most underrated characters in the whole series. also she doesn't hate men, she's just demanding towards them.
I think hajime and her look cute together, it's just so sad that she died that early in the game, istg that when i started playing the game i thought they were going to be that one canon couple (maybe bc i liked mahiru from the start, and i thought she would be the one), and then she died in chapter 2.
I don't dislike hinanami, in fact, i like it, but i believe they didn't have many dialogues where they talked at each other as the canon couple of the game, mahiru and hajime deserve more love, actually, mahiru deserves more love in general, she's amazing.

So, is there a general dislike to Mahiru or something?
I personally don't see it, but I can see why it could be there. First game, we had Chihiro, who was trapped in a cycle of self-loathing and an insecurity complex because he wasn't strong like a boy should be.
And then we have Mahiru, who starts off on the wrong foot by saying "Because you're a boy, you should be strong and tough and look after the girls."
It's not her fault, but there could be some resentment due to that.
Well, I kinda don't like her since she's first like males should be strong, then she be like males.... Pffft, who needs them? Besides, I'm quite annoyed she covered up a murder for her friend, yet when fuyuhiko actually kills her friend, she reprimands him for it. Just an annoying character, I'm glad she died.

I know it's a video game I'm talking about, but you should know that a lot of people do wish for the cast to die or live, and it's not just me you should be directing your comments toward. Ludward 80 ok, I do get where you're coming from, and I can see how Mahiru may not have been the *worst* character, per say, I guess I was just a little aggressive back then. I feel like Danganronpa should be the type of game where you can "root" for a certain person to survive or die though freely though, as stated in my previous comment. Though I can see now that Mahiru may not be a bad character though, she is definitely one of the weaker characters in Danganronpa 2, due to her cliche feminist attitude. Also that diss towards Hajime during one of the Free Time sessions also was rude, especially since he was the one who helped her with the party in the first place.
Ludward 80 I was talking about the party she made for the girls. I haven't played this game in a while, but I do remember her having Hajime help with a party, but only for girls, and not even appreciating his help.
I do agree, Mahiru might be 'bland', as her specialty isn't something that amazing, but in Ultra Despair Girls, Komaru was about the same, and she had better character development, showing a 'bland' girl can still be brave. From what we see of Mahiru, she was both normal and aggravating at the same time, expecting people,(especially men)to treat her better, as if she was better than them. Actually, it was only men that she acted that way towards them.
She did seem to have a motherly role in the first and second chapter, but Twogami would have proved to be a better leader, seeing how biased she is towards women.
Ludward 80 Ok, though the game did not really state that Mahiru was a feminist, it was quite heavily implied she was. Of course, there were moments in which she said odd things feminists usually wouldn't say, such as when she met Hajime, and stated that he better be a man and protect her, but then treat women much better than men and say that women are supposedly better than men. This was different in the original Danganronpa with Chihiro, because it was stated exclusively that Chihiro thought himself as a man, he just wanted to be treated fairly. In Mahiru's case though, the game never did anything but imply she had a grudge against males. Though it's not what a feminist would act like, she does sometimes act like a radical feminist, abusing men but treating other women much better. It's probably not the case though, since she also said many times that "the men needed to be strong and protect the women"

I think she and Tenko would get along. But here are some slight differences between them:
Mahiru is like a mother, and makes mean comments that shows she cares. Her stereotyping men is... idk how to do that. But she shows that she cares about both men and women.
Tenko is another case. She basically believed that men are shit from her master, who is a man. Her master told her that one single touch would drain her energy or something.
But they BOTH stereotype men

The thing with tenko is that she’s very naive, and the only man she trusted manipulated her into putting all her focus into neo Akido. She’s very emotional, so little things people tell her make a huge impact on her beliefs. She does care for shuichi, and basically states that she was wrong about him at first. Thats my thoughts on tenko, I personally adore her a lot and only want the best for her.

Hmm... Mahiru is kind of an annoying character, but I think I'm finally starting to get her a little...
It's like, there's nothing wrong with being simple and enjoying the little things in life. :? Sometimes you don't have to be super amazing to be special to someone.

I thought she was really plain when I first saw her so when I played the game and got to know her a bit more, she become my favorite.
She's just so cute. Also her wanting Hajime to take a photo of her while looking at him was a nice touch, it really cemented her as the best for me.

I'm 6 years late but I would have loved to see Mahiru (and even Peko) survive, most of the Dr2 survivors could have been killed off and it probably wouldn't have affected the story that much (for example Sonia kills Kazuichi in the beach house or vice versa)
