Thank you!!! In the beginning of our hobby we used to keep them in our community tanks with no land (local fish store's suggestion 🤦🏻♀️) But we finally learned how to truly take care of them!
Hi, I was thinking about getting some vampire crabs and was wondering if you can keep different types of them together? For example could you have a Halloween one with a purple one? And also can they live with snails? And my last question is will they eat my moss ball?
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 Hi, I am considering getting vampire crabs and was wondering if there was a good variety of snails that lay eggs the crabs will love munching on. I'm wanting an ecosystem that supports itself.
Not sure of the percentage but the glass lid creates humidity within it. We would leave it a crack open sometimes to still give the setup some outside air
Hello from England. I only found out about these Crabs a few day's ago, I love them. Red claw crabs are sold as fresh water tropical & although they can survive in that water they do better in Brackish, what about these crabs? Thanks
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 I've found someone who sells them but I've got a brackish Aquarium & setting up a Cichlid so it's either set up a 3rd or hope I can put them in with Red Eyed Tree Frogs or go without.
Thank you :) we do not, but we will try to put one together! This was a super simple, lowtech setup. It has been upgraded to a 20 gallon long, but same materials and what not! Do you have a crab tank setup as well?
hey i have one vampire crab in my tank right now but she only ever comes out way way late at night and if i turn on a light she darts back to her hide. how do u get yours to be so active
Hi there. They are nocturnal, so she isn't acting unusual or anything! I'm not sure if the plants help make them more comfortable... but I do see them more when I add food! Also, a lot of our film is usually at night 😊
Hi there! The only plant I can name would be pathos. The colorful ones were from home depot-- we just looked for small low-light plants that require light watering. They cost a few dollars each and can usually be found next to the bonsai or fortune plants. In term of the moss, that was something we pulled from a moist area in our yard! Wish I had more solid answers for you. Sorry!
No heater! We are in FL but could hide one using this material called Coroplast polypropylene (found it in the plexiglass section at home depot) and build a little box for the heater!
I have a question ! I'd be interested in having those adorable crabs, but I don't really want to end up with lots of little babies ; I wouldn't know what to do with them. So, is it okay to have only males or only females ?
Absolutely! From all my research and personal experience I've learn they are not aggressive to each other. Although, I've had 4 of them together at most, I believe the key is to have lots of plants and logs for them to hide in :)
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 Thank you for your quick answer ! :D I wanted to be absolutely sure before getting them, I wouldn't want them to fight and have a sad life.
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 I have another question if you don't mind :) Is it possible to put vampires and red devils together ? I've read they live in the same habitat but would they fight, since they're different species ?
@@TaliBiev Hi! We have put them together and they were just fine together! Just be sure to provide plenty of hiding places :) oh and note that they are escape artists. Lost a couple of them in the past because of that!
My crabs are on dry land most of the time. How do I feed them? Whenever I put food inside the water, they are not there to feed it and as a result, the water turns bad. In the end, I placed dries food on the dry surface. Will that work?
Hi there! We pile dry food on various rocks in the tank, ours eat overnight... and a couple of days later all the food is gone! Have also seen them eating vegetation throughout the tank.
Hi there! We just pushed up the gravel to create land or a hill. We use a Turkey baster to remove water/vacuum the gravel and a small cup to add water. With this strategy we never have to water the plants because the roots can dig itself into the part of the gravel with water
Thanks! What trouble do you have with them? This setup is super low tech... just basic lights that came with the starter tank. We dont even run any filters or anything-- just water changes with Turkey baster every week... they were in an even smaller tank and surprised us with their babies, lol
@@sofishticatedkeepers262 They just keep dying on me.. I don't know why. I try to keep humidity at 80 and temp 70 but find it difficult to do so. Also I have a water dish inside the tank and use a dechlorinator. I have driftwood from my garden and repti soil and sand. Was feeding them crickets and hermit crab food or fish flakes. @@TheQpzm12 Sometimes, less is more. I'd be nervous about the metal underneath-- the humidity might cause rust. How big of a tank is it? How often do you change the water? I find that they eat more vegetation than meaty foods. We don't even run a heater for this tank. Granted, we are in Florida, it did get cold for a handful of days but they did fine and just stayed out of the water. Maybe try a simpler setup. This setup cost us less than $50
at first water changes occurred once a week (this is a 5 gallon)... then when we upgraded to a 20g, water changes 2-3x a month... just upgraded them (hopefully for the last time) to a 40g... haven't done any water changes-- just have been adding water as the plants soak up the water!

Much appreciated!!! 🙌
Do you think vampire crabs could be kept in like 71-72° water, if you put a heat lamp over the land portion?
They should be good, I'd say 70 at the lowest

Hi Kristie! We do have them mixed but I believe it increases the risk of some of them growing without color-- so I'd be careful about that!
Yes to the snails! They do eat moss but they haven't touched our moss balls specifically, so that is a good question!

They carry their eggs until they hatch (not sure for how long- would have to google that) but they molt in the water :)

It's a 40 gallon breeder. $50 on sale at petco! 👍

Do the crabs ever eat the shrimps?
It has to be over a year at this point and they have not messed with them *knocks on wood*
Do they bite if you pick them.up
