Cough assist machine would help immensely! I’m a retired registered respiratory therapist and I could picture exactly what happened Shane. Must have been so frightening for you. Suction machine around would hurt either. You don’t want to aspirate vomit.

@@pyao Hello. A vest vibrates the lungs to help loosen thick secretions. A cough assist is used with a mask to apply a positive pressure breath to the lungs followed by a negative pressure to help remove secretions from the lungs. Yes, a pulmonologist would order this. Hope this was helpful.

So sorry you had to deal with all of that Shane and Hannah. As a long time intensive care nurse and from experience with my own family members, the irritation to your diaphragm from all that coughing when you've aspirated can also lead you to throw up. Usually they're not such separate events, but it's possible that this was the cause. Glad to see you're feeling better Shane! ❤

Ask your doctor about getting a cough assist machine. I have SMA too so I experience the same phlegm in lungs issue. The cough assist machine is very effective for me in clearing phlegm. It's portable too.
The sock underneath the pillow probably elevated your head enough to cause any nocturnal production of saliva to build in your mouth and find it's way to your lungs. Whereas normally without the sock your saliva would simply fall onto your pillow or something (if you sleep on your side only). Just my guess.

That must have been scary for both of you. I'm glad your OK Shane. I'm a caregiver to a loved one who is disabled and has had a hard time coughing up mucus in the past. Hannah, I don't know how to describe this in writing but there is a way you can cup your hands and pat Shane on the back if this ever happens again. When you see Shane's doctor again ask if they can show you this. Or maybe you can call Shane's doctor and ask if they can have home health care come out to show you how? As another commenter said please don't hesitate to call 911 if Shane is ever having difficulty breathing again. The suction machines that others have mentioned make it a lot easier to get mucus out if Shane can't cough it out. Ask Shane's doctor about this.

Sounds like Covid, it manifested exactly like that for me and several other friends for the more recent strains.

Definitely if you were swallowing a lot of phlegm, that can make you nauseated and vomit! Either way, glad you’re feeling better!

I aspirate on occasion due to having obstructive sleep apnea. I wake from a deep sleep hacking away and it lasts for a bit. It's concerning. I am able bodied but I'm getting on in age (65) and I just don't want it to get any worse. Sorry you get that too. Glad you are still a spring chicken. 🐥

My Granddaughter experienced almost the same symptoms after she throw up she was very tired & just wanted to sleep. I'm guessing it was just a virus going around... some of the phlegm may have gotten into his stomach & he needed to get it out.

Omg! Don't get me started about coughing. I have had this debilitating chronic cough since 2023 and have been through different tests and doctors to figure out what is going on. I have coughed so hard I have vomited 🤢. I sympathize! It stinks, and I wish I could get better.

Would a shake vest or a humidifier in the bedroom help? ❤

We’ve had about three weeks or strange mixed upper respiratory as well as gastric Sx going around in our area. We’re a long way frm CA but I’d suspect a germ/bug/virus.
