Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over seven years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Extreme dehydration is a medical emergency. If anyone reading this is ever dealing with extreme dehydration due to throwing up a lot, being lost in the desert for too long (edited note: you'd need to get out of the desert via finding your way or getting rescued), pregnancy complication, etc... please go to the hospital as needed.

Others have chimed in about this, but if this ever happens again, someone needs to call 911 right away regardless of whether or not Shane wants to go. Considering his medical situation, they could've gotten an IV into him immediately to at least ensure he wasn't dehydrated. He just doesn't have the same bandwidth to withstand this sort of thing that most of us could just power through. For him, it's an emergency.

This is really an emergency for anyone. If a person is throwing up constantly for any length of time and can't keep *any* fluids down it's very dangerous even if they do not have confounding medical conditions. Most people resist going but it has the potential to turn out very very badly, very quickly.

I got food poisoning decades ago and did exactly this same thing. I threw up every 15 minutes from 10pm until 8:30 the next morning. I was so exhausted that halfway through the night I was literally rolling out of bed and crawling to the toilet! My hubby worked nights so I was alone and without help. He came home at about 7am to find me crying hysterically in bed, he went to the MD office and picked up some phenergan suppositories which was the only thing that saved me. I dropped 20 pounds in one night! My heart goes out to you!

Oof, glad you're still with us! Saran wrap is a life saver for the most random things, isn't it? Here's some more:
    - Wrap used paint brushes to keep them from drying, especially if you aren't done!
    - Filthy hands while you work? Slap it on your phone ahead of time to keep it clean!
    - Wrap banana stems to keep them fresh longer! Some people wrap the whole bunch.
    - Traveling? Team up with zip-lock bags to keep shampoo, conditioner, or other bottled products from leaking in your luggage! Saran wrap the items, them put them together in a bag.
    - Using a skin or hair treatment? Consider covering the area with wrap to trap in the product. This makes it warmer and allows the skin/hair to absorb more nutrients in a shorter amount of time.
    - Fruit flies? Get the saran wrap out! An oldie but goodie: fruit fly trap!
    - Saran wrap can be applied almost anywhere for faster clean up - baking station, artists paint palette, refrigerator shelves, gardening shelf, and more.
That's all I can think of for the moment.

It's possible Shane wasn't able to judge his condition due to the dehydration. As a Type 1 diabetic who lives in Florida, staying hydrated can be a challenge. One of the first symptoms is confusion/lack of awareness. It's so subtle, sometimes you don't realize it's happening.
True story, last summer I attended an outdoor afternoon wedding. The ceremony only lasted an hour, but I started 'checking out' mentally. I knew I was feeling 'off', but I didn't tell anyone. Just said my goodbyes and left. During the one-hour drive home, my only thought was ... Gatorade! ... Gatorade! Made a beeline to the fridge, downed a bottle and felt fine. Only then I came to my senses and realized I'd skipped out on the reception entirely. So embarrassing - and rude! Wasn't able to apologize to the couple until they returned from the honeymoon. When I told the bride what happened, she said: "WE HAD GATORADE IN THE DRINKS COOLER!"

Ya, hallucinating is no fun when your brain is dying. I saw the nurses dogs when they came into my room, saying it must be bring your dog to work day. In the ICU! Totally funny for me, but terrifying! Oh, also spoke to my dad and uncle, them telling me it’s not my time, and they died years ago. Crazy town. Sepsis sucks!

I had violently bad food poisoning once many years ago. (It was the Moo Goo Gai Pan I ate. I used to be a favorite, but I couldn't even eat it again for over 25 years). it was a dangerous level of dehydration,. There was no way I could rehydrate myself, because nothing was staying down. I went to the ER and was hospitalized overnight so that they could give me a drip IV to keep my hydrated. I also received an anti-nausea medication. To anyone listening to this, respectfully, not going to the ER was a really poor decision. And you don't need to be disabled for that to be dangerous and life threatening. I hope people learn from this video that if they are unfortunate enough to experience this level of food poisoning, go to the Dr and get rehydrated. Respectfully, I have to say that I find it rather surprising that you all did not take this more seriously and took such a serious risk so lightly that you did not seek medical treatment. Not meant as a judgement, just my honest response watching this video.

I cannot believe you didn't take him directly to the ER for IV's, anti-biotics and anti-nausea RX. Completely unneeded and dangerous suffering while the toxins kept multiplying in his system for days. He also could of choked.

She was so concerned about “we are in public “ and him not to embarrass her at the airport.. and that her mom was waiting…
Then that they had all these plans that came first rather than her dying husband!
He is fragile! And FULLY dependent on caregivers!
He didn’t want to beg for the hospital because he didn’t want to be an inconvenience to his wife! As she was clearly annoyed at him being dangerously ILL! And still traveled with him in the car ill for days!
She was so selfish! Quite unbelievable.
And the comments saying shes not his caregiver and all the comments saying shes not responsible to take him to the hospital??
      Shame on you all!

Imagine having lungs as impaired as Shane’s. Now imagine having the night he described (vomited 30 times, hallucinating, etc.). Now superimpose Hannah’s laughter and the indifferent comment she made at 6:48 over that mental creation. It totally impugns the caregiving focus your channel has revolved around since its inception. Unironically hilarious!! lmaooooo

Oh my! I was waiting for the part where you went to the ER. LOL This is behind you so I won't be an alarmist, but I'll just over this for BOTH of you for future reference. ANYONE, who vomits 27 times in less than 24 hours needs to go to the ER. Even an able bodied person would be dehydrated. And, it can be a vicious circle. One of the symptoms of dehydration is nausea. Being dehydrated is dangerous because your electrolytes are way off and it can cause heart arrhythmia etc. I got dehydrated last year after an outpatient procedure on my esophagus and it was too painful to even swallow liquids. I tried to move and even go to work for half a day but I didn't have the strength. Finally a friend brought me some gatorade that I diluted a bit and I could swallow it. But I was in such bad shape before then I could 't even think straight. Anyway, maybe you did this and didn't mention it, but anytime something this unusual and extreme happens, PLEASE call your Doctor or an Urgent Care or someone who will give you actual medical information and advise. Don't make assumptions that "it'll be fine" on your own. Sometimes it's not. Love you both, so glad you're feeling much better Shane! ❣
