  • The Philippines, situated in the lower-middle-income category according to the World Bank, boasts a nominal GDP of $435.67 billion (2023 est.), ranking 34th globally. Adjusted for purchasing power parity, the GDP rises to $1.27 trillion, signaling a higher standard of living. Despite economic growth, challenges persist, with a high Gini coefficient reflecting income inequality and a Human Development Index ranking of 117th highlighting areas for improvement in health, education, and living standards. The archipelago's complex economic profile showcases characteristics of both developing and developed nations, revealing a continuous struggle to balance growth with addressing social disparities. The Philippines, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is navigating a political transition, promising a new chapter in leadership. Economically, the country, classified as an emerging market, is undergoing a shift from agrarian to service- and manufacturing-oriented, with a growth rate of 7.6% in 2022. Population dynamics show a decline in growth rate and fertility, aiming for stability by 2050. While the economy demonstrates resilience, the challenge lies in reducing poverty rates and income inequality, addressing social disparities, and fostering inclusive development. The Philippines is a poor country. They will not call it the sick man of Asia for nothing.
It is the only agricultural country in the world that imports its rice, onion, sugar, chicken, pork, beef, and even salt.
The main export of the Philippines is labor. They export slaves all over the planet Earth. If labor is needed on the moon they will export Filipino slaves.
Poverty is everywhere you will not fail to see it.
Developing country? Developing a disease of corruption. The Filipinos are only good at hiding their misery with a smile.

I know for fact that my ancestors have been trading gold with the Chinese merchants a thousand years ago long before Africa started mining their gold. Go the Ayala Museum to find more about the Philippine gold. Indeed, Philippines is so rich, but Filipino government are more concern about the environmental destruction and human life before wealth. @@rockyb1161

It may be poor based on certain things but it's not as bad as some of those really 3rd world African countries. PH economic status is the same level as Thailand, a little more than Vietnam, etc. Philippines, being the 34th economy is the world out of 195 counties is not a bad spot at all. China, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan were all 3rd world countries back then, Philippines was even economically richer than those countries back in the day, it's just fortunate for them they have efficient politicians and are not always struck with calamities many times every year like the PH. Also, the world is round, right now, the U.S, Canada, U.K, France, Australia have growing homelessness, drug infested streets, increasing prices of real estate which everyone can not afford, etc. and a possibility of being a war zone in the future due to many geopolitical tensions, It's just a matter of time in which those countries will be degrading. U.S. has massive layoffs at the moment. PH on the other hand is improving and rising. China's economy right now is declining, Japan is facing an ageing society which will make it difficult for them to sustain their economy in the future. Europe is getting infested with extremist Islamists due to failure in stopping them from entering their borders trying to be politically correct, at least PH is heading the right direction, growing and growing, unlike those countries which are going backwards. lol. Remember this, nothing is ever permanent, nothing lasts forever, so enjoy things while you still can.PH is not a poor country, it is very rich in natural resources and human resources , it has all the means to be 1st world country, it's the mindset or mentality of our people is what's keeping it poor, but if directed properly what great achievements we can make. Also, being rich is not a guarantee of being happy, a lot of people from rich countries commit suicide bec they feel lacking and empty despite their wealth and abundance, at least with PH, people are happy despite the lack and I don't condone mediocrity. People should still aim for the best no matter what. It's simply being thankful for what you have, and continue to strive is what matters.

... PH economic status is the same level as Thailand, a little more than Vietnam, etc. ... >>> In 2022 Indonesia GDP 1,3 trillion USD, per capita 4700 USD,
Thailand GDP almost 500 billion USD, per capita almost 7500 USD, Vietnam GDP 400 billon USD, per capita almost 4100 USD, Philippines GDP 400 biliion USD, per capita 3600 USD. More to add and I would use only ID and TH to compare: HDI (Human Development Index) 2015 of PH was 0.698 (2021 = 0.699), ID - 2015 = 0.695 (please note that it was lower tha that of PH) and ID - 2021 = 0.705 (above that of PH), TH -2015 = 0.781 and TH -2021= 0.800/ Unemployment Rate (% 2021) PH = 7.8, ID = 6.5 , TH = 1.5/Inflation Rate (% 2021) PH = 3.9, ID = 1.6 , TH = 1.2/ International Reserve (US$ 2022) PH = 96,040,188,241, ID = 137,222,356,128, TH = 216,500,525,687/Export (US$ 2022) PH = 96,040,188,241, ID = 315,924,004,240, TH = 325,953,660,377/Tourism (Number of Arrivals 2020) PH = 1,483,000, ID = 4,053,000, TH = 39,916,000/Ease of doing Business Index (2020) PH = 62.83, ID = 69.58, TH = 80.09/Research&Development (R&D) Expenditure (% of GDP 2020) PH = 0.3, ID = 0.3, TH = 1.1. There are a lot more. Do your own research if needed. What I would say next you might listen or not. Doesn't matter because the result will be on you, not me. I once heard a foreigner said Filipino always be the last to know everything. Why? Because Filipino tends to lack knowledge about what others are doing, what are their plans, etc. You see only the info/data in a spot of time, yet you don't try to catch up with what they are doing and think you are on par/slightly below or even above them. Hence, before you know the latest info/data, they have already leave you to the level that to draw the same level with them on that issue would cost too much resources (time, money, etc.) PH and VN which has already passed you in many criteria in recent years is again another good sample. Yes the PH GDP growth is rising, however that's because you have lots of people (and unemployment). Add those labor to teh economy and the GDP will always rise, yet you will see that the growth of GDP/Capita which roughly measure the standard of living is not rising with the same rate of gross GDP (A very simeple sample: Economy A and B with both has 1 member with gross GDP =100. Suppose that economy A get another member with the same productivity and all things equal, their GDP would be 200 (100% RSING) yet their GDP/Capita is still 100. (0% rsing) Not to talk that many of the countries you mentioned has bigger base: 4% of 100 is less than 2.5% of 200. Same thing. It's called Base effect) And that's the reason why the PH, once the leading of Asian, falls behind others. The main problem is your attitude and mindset, not the corruption. Excuse or practicing crab mentality or lower others down when they do something better might make you less pain but it's improve nothing. Everything stays the same including the problem that cause your laggard. Being humble and appreciate when others do something better does not mean low self-esteem or lack of pride. On the contrary it's a must since to improve anything in life or on country level you must first admit that there are some mistakes and we can make them better, because you cannot change what others are doing but only yourselves, unless your pride is false pride to hide the inferiority complex inside.

If you give me q choice to live in some western countries and the Philippines?.. I would still choice Philippines..
Happiness and fun in Philippines is very different in some western countries.
My family just earn a minimum wage which is little amount when compared to Western nations wage but..
The bond between our family and relative are strong. When there is a special occasion like Christmas, everyone would gather having a family Christmas party which is really fun, we would sometimes go to public beach while bringing our foods, singing when there is a birthday.. I don't think that this type of freedom and fun is available in other nations. The freedom of speech and things to do are much more lax and not that strict.. if you just stare for a sec to someone in western countries you might sue for harassment which is compared to Philippines is not that absurd. You could get in jail by addressing a girl a Ma'am, by judging her gender. That is something much more absurb and lastly, I don't want to become an atheist..
Corruption? I don't think that Philippines government is that corrupt, it was only the foolish Filipino's way of blaming the government why they are poor.
Philippines had a high population of aroung 117,000,000 which is considered as a high population and with a geographic area of 300,000 km which is mostly composed of islands. Trade needed to go through ports and logistic will cause more. It was nearly impossible to connect all islands and I think this hinders the nations growth, much more the nation was prone ofmany disasters such as typhoon and earthquake this explained why the development of the nation is slow. If the nation was not an archipelagic then the nation wouldve an easier time to develop.

South Korea was not even an independent country until after the WW2, yet it’s pretty much industrialized decades ago.
Some people say the geography is a factor. But Japan is also made up of several islands much like the Philippines.
Singapore and South Korea are not made of several scattered islands as some observers point out, but resource wise the Philippine islands are resourse rich.
My thinking is that the Filipino people should be educated to put into political positions only leaders who could lessen the corruptions in all levels of the Philippine society if not totally eradicating it completely, if that is even possible.

Nonsense! A parliamentary or federal system of government is not the answer to the problems of the country. Such a system will only lead to a weak central government and a fragmented country, which will give hostile foreign powers, like China, an opportunity to take over the country piecemeal!

Philippines is a 3th world developing country...when you have children still begging for food in the streets, babies starving to death, high birth rate and rising poor population, the labor market salary are slave- wages, there is no welfare, retirement pension is worse then communist countrys, the Catholic church are given responsibility to care for the poor, not the Government, the Rich and political leader hold all the wealth , the poor are oppressed and have no power, the Chinese want the Philippines and the national resources back from the colonizers which the foreigner( Anglo/ America British Empire) who took it and claim it for themself by Imperialism 500 yrs ago, over 12 millions still live in slum( lowest under poverty leve)l, no medical or educational benefits...many rich nation country are moving their corporations and businesses to Philippines for cheap labor market( workers wages are$ 4 to $6 a day)the country is becoming a police state totalitarian government,.... there are still parts of the country that is dirty, undeveloped,chaostic...I still think Philippines is still a 3rd world developing country...well I say ta-ta for now...cheerio...for sure....Giorgio R.
