First time I heard him was on the Graham Norton show, I thought he was putting the accent on. The only time I'd seen him was on the Americans. Incredible!
I’ll tell ya, if he did an audiobook of children’s stories or nursery rhymes.... even more Welsh ones of course, is listen to it every night!! Actually, lol I’d be even happier if he did a Welsh English dictionary, and used them in a sentence!! Then I could learn the language better - subliminally and awake!
Dont know why, he's from cardiff (hence someone comparing him to gavin and stacey accent). Rob is more valleys sounding because he's from port talbot. Which is waaaay more welshy sounding to someone like me from cardiff . Or caaaiiiirdiff
I have never meet a Welsh person who is not more unlike than the English. The accent is is so beautiful that when I rarely actually hear it I seek out the speaker and it is always the most charming conversation that follows. Language just flows from the Welsh like a well of joy and a world view like no other. The Scots are wonderful too but I cant understand them.. ........that was joke. Steve Brisbane Australia
Welsh is the Latin American Spanish of English accents ; sounds romantic and nostalgic whereas Scottish is the Italian; excellent for banter and for shouting but not really good to express serious feelings as its quite funny. Northern irish would be the French and Northern English has to be Portuguese from Brazil for how funny and cool it sounds. London english would be like Russian; unique, strong yet annoying at times and Australian like Spanish from Spain; loved and hated in equal parts but always proud
I've just watched Matthew in a clip from Stephen Colbert and he was mild Welsh but mostly mid-Atlantic. He has returned to his roots here and it's lush! I find it difficult to do a Welsh accent but the language and accent are wonderful. Verbal caramel!
Just can't watch Colbert now. His 'Colbert Report' character will always rank as one of television's greatest, but damn did he sell his soul for 30 pieces of silver.
Oh my gosh! I’m glad I came upon this channel by chance. Thank you RUclips algorithm. I’m not Welsh but I am told by my very very Welsh boyfriend that I am an honorary Welsh lady. 🥰 This may be strange story but I found Anthony Hopkins interesting since I was an early teenager and The Remains of the Day came out, and I saw that movie. I didn’t know anything about Wales or Sir Anthony Hopkins. There was something about him that was compelling and captivating. By the time I was 16 I told myself I am going to find an older man who is Welsh. It must have been meant to be because when I was 18 I met a Welshman who was about 36 years my senior when I went to visit Spain for my gap year before going off to college. Age really is just a number because I was in love. I lost the love of my life in 2021. My Richard. ❤️
On the DVD commentaries of Titus Andronicus, Hopkins said Matthew Rhys had the makings of the next great Shakespearean actor. (I was so excited to actually know something related to this!)
That was lovely! One forgets that Matthew is welsh. He always seems to be playing Americans these days and is so convincing at them as well. I didn't realise he had such a welsh accent either. That was a fun interview and made me laugh. Rob Brydon always makes me laugh. I love the things he does with Steve Coogan as well. They are such a great team.
I don’t know if I’ve ever heard Matthew Rhys in his native accent... must have in a chat show, but it fascinates me because he does other accents so well. Thanks for doing these, Rob.
If I have been outside Wales for any time, I am very surprised at how Welsh I sound if I speak to another person who has a distinct Welsh accent. I think it must be a mirroring thing.
Hollywood isn't that pro Wales, thats why! How many historical pieces have been made about Welsh history for example. Welsh actors often have to put on an accent.
OMG, watching this was so much fun! Matthew Rhys, who I admire so much as an actor, is a marvel of exuberant charm, quick wit, humor, intelligence, humility, and great story telling. His interplay with Rob Brydon, another wonderful wit, was truly delicious. And, I want to add that Rhys certainly deserves being on the same tier as Sheen, and maybe on the same tier as Hopkins, imo. Catch his performance in the movie "Come What May" and see if you agree.
What a joyous lovely funny conversation! Adore Rob and Mathew, 'equally' in their own very unique talented way, ( see what i did there) I lived in South wales for 19 years until i had to move back to Yorkshire last year to look after my Dad. Miss Wales so very much. so hearing their accents is a treat Thank you. More of this please xxx
Hats off to Rob. This is the most professional, focused, entertaining and thought through online interview series. Makes the big US network interview hosts look very amateur with their set up. MOVE OVER CORDEN, ROB IS COMING ! ( If Rob gets a prime time US talk show on a good network with great guests, Coogan will have to up his Hollywood anecdote game for the next Trip ). I hope this series becomes a show-reel for Rob to conquer US TV
I totally agree...I'm so happy to see this lovely, charming, high lair eeous, gentleman pop up on our screens. So professionally produced. Although why give him away to the US...(even though I live there!)...keep him faffing amongst the shrubs in his home turf, gently taking the piss (language Sinead) out of literally everything!
Lovely chat. I was lucky to have seen Richard Burton filming in Winchester with Sophia Loren in 1974 when I was a young police officer doing crowd control. His voice resonated across the Cathedral green it was thrilling to hear him
You can tell from how surprised Matthew was that the interview is over that the subjects would like to talk more. Go for full half hour videos, Rob, or even 45 mins. That's optimum length for an interview, especially when it's like this one and really clicking. Matthew was just hitting his stride, and it's happened in some of your other ones too.
"You misspelled 'wanker'"! Love that bit! But TBH, I'd never heard of Matthew Rhys until now. I'd like to see a Full Monty-type film with Rob, Matthew, Michael Sheen and Rhys Ifans starring. That'd be great! I'd like to be Welsh in my next incarnation.
Thank you for a delightful piece and warm, inviting banter 😊 What an actor that guy is. I’ve been watching Perry Mason not knowing he’s Welsh or anything about him, but boy, brilliant! Good luck with the channel
You can tell Matthew Rhys from me that I know you, Rob Brydon, very well, but I didn’t know Matthew Rhys until you mentioned It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Smashing interview as well.
@nicole nagy And yet not so internal, right to the end: "The travel dressing gown is just the tip of the iceberg." ruclips.net/video/vMUzfWkg1h0/видео.html
Wonderful interview, I guess I’ll be watching Mister Rogers after all, even though it’ll be without the pleasure of Mr. Rhys’s lovely Welsh phrasing. Perhaps the day will come he can talk in his normal voice most of the time - I have Welsh friends in California who’ve kept their full Welsh accent the last 30 years, so they’re there!!
There is such a difference when Welsh celebrities talk to other Welsh people compared to when they talk on other shows. The accent is definitely stronger and we all seem to naturally play with words as we talk 🤣
What a lovely interview! They are both so engaging. I went to Erasmus Hall HS so it was a wonderful surprise to hear they visited with Neil Diamond. Cool!😊👍
Mr sincere thanks Mr B. I have seen a lot of Matt's work and never heard him as native as this. Glad you both had fun which really came through. A joy to watch...every success with this!
How fun! I just saw on RUclips the 2014 great performances at Lincoln Center of Sweeney Todd with Bryn Terfel. And I believe he's from Wales, and wow what a bass baritone. And impressive acting as well
My brother and sister went to Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn in the 60s and we lived a few blocks away. How weird to hear Rob and Matthew were there!
I'm not a big follower of celebrities, and had only seen Mr. Rhys on The Americans. Imagine my shock at his accent. I thought he was kidding around at first. Wow...what an actor. This American never suspected his accent while watching!
Are all Welsh people this charming? We should let the Welsh rule the world, it would be lush.
I'm not. I hate everyone. And everything.
@@bujin1977 with those attributes you're cut out for leadership.

Matthew's accent is so strong he makes Rob sound English!!!

Matthew's exuberant speaking voice reminds me of Joanna Paige from Gavin and Stacey but in a lower register😂

It'd be the same with Michael Douglas' wife
Rob Brydon is not wrong, Matthew Rhys does THE best Richard Burton impression I have ever heard.
That was eerie.
Wow - how Welsh and excitable is Matthew Rhys? I think it's the first time I saw him talking in his own accent. Obviously an incredible actor.
Having said that he used his own accent in Columbo, but it didn't sound quite so Welsh...
@@remapyourlife No this is Meryl Streep level transformation. I cannot believe this is the same person.
I have never seen Matthew Rhys this relaxed ever. He is such a fun guy and I love how his accent is coming through!
Brydon is very safe hands, a great interviewer and Rhys was very entertaining and engaged throughout.
Matthew does such a convincing american accent, you forget his Welsh accent is so strong.
I think it gets even stronger when he's talking to with other Welsh people
@@charchaz00 Yeah, that's quite common in humans. It's called the "chameleon effect" and has to do with ones desire to fit in and empathize.

That Richard Burton impression is *very* strong. Would give anything to hear him saying "Broadsword calling Danny Boy."

Stick with this show if you can Rob it is fantastic. Thanks for all the effort. From all of us in New Zealand.
Make them longer, there's so much potential quality material here.
Loving these! Nursing a baby at 5am in lockdown in Australia and loving these! The perfect accompaniment for a Welsh man to bottle feeding.
I really like Rob Brydon (you) as an interviewer. You were very generous with your guests...and quite charming and easy to talk to/listen to and fun.
