In Katori Shinto-ryu five forms make up gogyo-no-tachi: mitsu-no-tachi, yotsu-no-tachi, in-no-tachi, sha-no-tachi, and hotsu-no-tachi. It takes at least five years before a student can be considered of the right level to learn these forms. Practitioners should be well versed in omote-no-tachi, omote-no-bo, and omote-no-naginata. These forms provide the proper stamina, forms and technical depth for a student to understand and execute gogyo techniques properly.
There are many differences between omote no tachi and gogyo no tachi. These stem from the fact that omote no tachi is used against opponents wearing armor while gogyo applications are aimed at unarmored opponents. In omote-no-tachi the practitioner often moves back or to the left or right when attacked and countering. In gogyo-no-tachi, we deal with attacks by moving in towards the attack. Gogyo no tachi is extremely effective in close-quarters combat. Both types of forms need to be performed with great speed and big movements but in gogyo there are additional requirements to properly perform the applications.
