The thing is, even though he's an abusive sadistic monster, Steve plays him with so much child-like glee that I can't bring myself to hate the character.

steve martin moves like that almost throughout the whole lip sync with his body. he always seems to put his whole body into a performance like this, which is what makes him such a good actor

I had a wisdom tooth pulled years ago and this song was playing in my head the. entire. time. My dentist also looked at bit like Steve Martin, so that didn't help. I told him about it later and he got me back by pretending to suck up some gas and then say, 'What? You thought that was for you?' and cackling like crazy. Had he not been my childhood dentist, I probably would of ran out of the room screaming.

I wish I still had my childhood dentist. When I was little, I never even knew he gave me shots because he'd numb the area and make sure the needle was out of sight. He always talked me through the hard parts. When I got older, was disabled, broke and in need of a root canal, he did the procedure for free. I don't think I appreciated him as much as I should have while I knew him. Mind you, I _did_ appreciate him. I just assumed most dentists were like him. WRONG!
I don't know if he's still living, but I almost feel like I need to send him a note of appreciation after the experiences I've had with other dentists. I had a representative from an organization who looks out for disabled people with me at an appointment on Friday and the dentist _still_ treated me like a piece of crap. The representative said she could have written him up immediately, but doing so would be counterproductive. When I got home, I remembered this scene / song and I've been mollifying myself with it.
Had three wisdoms pulled by an Army dentist at one time. Woke up at 5am, given a local and the procedure started. I was eventually given a couple of motrin (literally 2, which all Army medical handed out like candy. It was their cure-all for everything from a stubbed toe to a sucking chest wound...) and 24 hrs to get over it.

When my mother’s class graduated from dentist school they played this song at their graduation. Little shop of horrors is definitely one of my favorite movies and this song is definitely one of the reasons why
I gave my dentist the DVD for a Christmas present.

it’s a well paying career but not one you’d wear around and define your image about like a doctor. What that does mean is that you can use the money to take up more expensive hobbies.

Steve Martin is utterly brilliant in the right roles... Shame he hasn't been used to his full potential in recent years - he's funny af and brilliant at dark comedies like this and the Man With 2 Brains.

In his younger days he was really big time into physical comedy and that's caused him quite a bit of pain now in his older years. That's probably why he doesn't do too much anymore.
I watched this movie as a child and it made me cry whenever my mom took me to the dentist, because our dentist always wore a leather jacket to the office and rode a motorcycle. It didn't help that my dad flat out told me that the movie was based on a true story and that our dentist was the actual dentist that the character was based on.

Steve Martin is still around. If you want him in particular, there's several relatively recent productions that you might like. The Pink Panther for instance, or It's Complicated. And I'm sure there are plenty of other comedian actors as well. Have you ever tried Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphey, Robin Williams and Leslie Nielsen to name a few? The last two have sadly met their end already, but even today they're still good for a great evening for their work lives on. Jim and Eddie still rock on.

I was 12 years old in '86 when this movie came out.
I was busting a gut watching Steve Martin ad the sadistic Dentist. (Even when he ended up as plant food!).
But this scene also sparked my interest in dentistry, and I decided I wanted to be a dentist.
So, after high school in 1992, I went to college, earned by BS degree, then on to Intro to Medicine, and to Dental school.
FYI: To become a dentist, one must show excellent grades, as well as have funds to pay for the schooling.
But before that, a dental school applicant must be evaluated by a board staffed by practicing dentists. The applicant must show he/she has the right temperament to be a dentist.
The board I mentioned is staffed by practicing dentists. These people have a deep reverence for the highly respectfull and admired profession Dentistry is.
The board members must agree that a given applicant is an ideal candidate to be admitted to dental school.
If they don't agree, the applicant will be turned away.
Now, here I am, 20+ years in the profession.

I explained my desire to enter the profession, to relieve discomfort and pain patients are suffering from, to improve patients ability to chew properly (as well as speak and breathe).
I told them I had a deep respect and compassion for people, and a genuine desire to end suffering.
But yes, I did mention this movie scene as what first sparked my interest in Dentistry.
The board members actually chuckled.

Watched this video on loop after getting my wisdom teeth removed a few weeks ago, and it genuinely cheered me up to the point that I didn't even need any pain pills. Not even an Ibuprofen, much less the Percocet my dentist prescribed me.

Omg. So I had to have oral surgery 2 weeks ago, the oral surgeon heard this song playing on my phone as I was in the waiting room showing to the staff. He literally did this whole song, word for word, and didn't miss a lick when he came into my room. I dang near died. If he had his staff be the back up singers I definitely woulda.

This brings me back. Oh, the nostalgia. My brother and I watched this movie numerous times back in the ‘80s when we were kids. We loved singing along to this song the most.
I’m so glad this movie played in to how camp this song was, plus being directed by Frank Oz and hiring a bunch of comedians. So many movie musicals now take everything so seriously.
This scene genuinely freaked me out as a kid. And not just because of the obvious reason that a dentist is any kid's nightmare. This was honestly the first time I realised that there truly are people who enjoy inflicting pain on others. It really gave a me a slightly bleaker world view. I know that might sound stupid when talking about a 'silly' film like this, but it's true.
Also, the scene with Bill Murray as the masochist... that just confused things for me :P

I can't hate Steve Martin even in this role. What a legend. The fact that the Ronettes like him is telling. He is both the least and most likeable character in the movie.
The least likeable character is Audrey 2. Audrey 2 EATS people! 😱 The WORST things Orin did was give Audrey the Human a black eye, punch his assistant, hit her with door, and perform sadistic and painful dental procedures.

I remember seeing this when I was young, I never realised Steve Martin played this role. At the time I didn't know who Steve Martin is and I remembered this song well (because it's super catchy and memorable) but I'd never revisited when I was older so never connected it to the dad from Cheaper by the Dozen.
(I know Steve Martin has been in loads of other things, but when I picture his face, Cheaper by the Dozen is the first one that springs to mind.)
at 1:50 is absolute ear candy! The singing is wonderful in this movie.
This scene alone has convinced me that Steve Martin would've been a good Joker.

I literally started singing this to myself at my appointment today.
Every aspect of this movie is QUALITY. It’s excellent. The song writing is smart, hilarious and catchy. I can’t think of a modern actor that could deliver a performance like this with the energy Steve Martin does here. The backup singers add so much. It’s like they are in the movie, but not in the movie. I know it’s a cliche but Hollywood couldn’t make a movie like this today. They don’t have the acting talent or writing capability anymore.
Someone that could have approached Steve's brilliance in this role is Michael Palin. He's such a soft spoken, sweetheart of a man. But look at the scene in Terry Gilliam's Brazil, where he's torturing his own friend into a confession. - He played a sadist brilliantly and he could handle the comedic side just as naturally. Brilliant by Steve though, no doubt..
