Little Shop of Horrors - Dentist Scene - w/ Bill Murray

- My favorite scene. I love you, Bill Murray.
Because I want to reply to MANY comments with this, I'm just gonna say it here: When I was a kid and watched this movie my kid mind thought that Bill's character was "pretending" to like being at the dentist because he was actually afraid/had a fear of being at the dentist...and acting that way was his way of coping...
I like how we get introduced to an extremely sadistic dentist who thrives on causing pain to others, then the movie throws us a curveball by having him meet his equal, an extremely masochistic patient. Sheer brilliance.
This is basically the scene that stood out to me as a kid for that reason. A very long time ago this was on and I was half paying attention, but there was always something about that guy who actually ENJOYED the awful pain (and how it frustrated the mean dentist) that stood out to me. I missed the sexual undertones as a kid, but I just remember how the sadistic dentist was basically "foiled" by this crazy guy who loved the pain lol
dlancer2k Have you ever read the fangoria magazine about this scene? It wasn't written as a "sadist" versus a "masochist"! It was intended to introduce "audiences" to "cheezy improvisation comedy"... It was to introduce audiences to a new wave of Comedy! Cheezy comedy. Which is so very common today! But back then people really didn't get it! So rather than do a whole movie with actors acting like this! This was the introduction to "cheesy sketch comedy" "improvisation era"! The "sadist" versus the "masochist"! Is a big "fallacy" that the mainstream audience" Has spread with this sequence due to a misinterpretation!
Eric Taylor
actually, the same scene with a masochist was in the original movie from 1960 (the meaning was made _very_ clear), so I'm not sure what you mean. it could be what the magazine said as well, but it's 100% _was_ written as "sadist vs masochist".
Unstoppable force meets immovable object. Clearly Bill won this round. You don't often see Masochism beat Sadism, but when you do, it's a pleasure. A slow, long, painful, excruciating pleasure! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Candybar! Candybar, candybar!
".......Yes Doctor......"
There is something meta about this. Bill Murray stealing the scene from Steve Martin, who was himself stealing the movie from the rest of the cast.
Wow I didn't get that; brilliant insight.
nah steve martin is funnier than bill murray in this.
I'm your 1000th like
@@DirtyGeorge Thank You Very Much!!!!!!! This is the first comment I have posted that made it to that number.
@@orbison your welcome. Wish i had 1000th likes. My most likes was 100 for a racist joke
I think the most flawless thing about this scene is the fact that I saw this movie when I was a kid and didn't understand why my parents were laughing, and then I became an adult and realized what was going on and my brain exploded.
minaminokyoko omg me too XD
minaminokyoko don't follow
Same. Its amazing how much illuminati mind control we endured in the 1980s that our parents were clueless about before the ratings system. I would watch the dentist scenes over & over as a little kid cuz they made me tingly and meanwhile had no idea my brain was being rewired to seek and approve of these behaviors. After the ratings system it all moved to The Internet to confuse parents again. Now its on smart phones.
I don’t get the scene
Oh god lol
Can we all just appreciate the fact that Bill Murray ad lid almost the ENTIRE SCENE
He does that alot in all his movies, sometimes to the annoyance of the Director. But it gets laughs so they accept it lol
Ab Lib.... but yeah
If it works, if I was the director, I'd leave it. I'd get along with his ass. He's a riot.
Frank Oz even said that Martin went by the script and Murray ad libbed every take
i had a feeling he totally improv'd everything here lol made it more hilarious and awkward
the sensual "yes doctor" cracks me up every time lol
Yes, I love that line! lol
also the look in his eye... cracks me up
LOL! He's the type to drop the soap on purpose.
Yes! 🥴
@@therealautisticdj, “What’s the matter?” *Translates*...”game over?”
That face Bill made before saying "Yes, doctor" was priceless! xD
Not to mention the face he made when he saw the tools. When some of my friends saw that face, I had to tell them, "That's not fear".
Still a better love story than Twilight.
bodysoluble I know
bodysoluble - Man, anything's better than "Twilight"!!
Oh Jesus 😂
Except Fifty Shades and Shadowhunters those are on its level.
TRUE
I definitely did NOT fully understand this scene when I saw it as a kid. I just thought Bill Murray was some crazy person. I didn't fully grasp exactly WHY he seemed to be enjoying himself so much. It's so much funnier now as an adult with that added context
Yep. As a kid, my thinking was that he was pretending to enjoy it because he was afraid of the dentist, ha!!
I didn't fully understand it either but it was still funny to me. When he 1st seen the tools he say oh my God i always felt like he was afraid at first and thought about the pain he was gonna be in and yes he is thinking about the pain he's gonna be in but enjoying it. Never realized he was getting overly excited about it and not afraid
The funny thing is that bill Murray is playing the same character that a young Jack Nicholson played in the original little shop of horrors.
Same. Tbh, I'm not sure that my parents fully understood it either. They're kinda... conservative. 🤷♀️😁
Same tbh I didn’t get it until much later Lmao 😂
The greatest love scene to come out of Hollywood.
Agreed
I was thinking the same exact thing.
I still don't get what relevance this had in the movie but I love it.
It was to get Orin agitated (as he wasn't getting the reaction he wanted) so he would use his gas mask to calm down, which would lead to his death
+Grace Kirkland This was readded to the film. In the original film, there is a masochistic patient. He is not in the stage musical but when they decided to film this, they decided to put him back in to be funny.
+Grace Kirkland
It's also to show the sadistic side of the dentist character, so the audience will side with the hero in the movie.
+sha11235 it was in the original 1960 movie with Bill Murray`s rolw played by Jack Nicholson.
also it was just hilarious. because bill
This scene definitely awakened something in someone at some point. I’m not saying that it was me just now, but it was definitely someone.
Oh absolutely. I mean, certainly not me either, but, you know.....someone
Yeah i can totally see how, hypothetically, it could maybe awaken something in someone. not that i have any experience in the matter, not at all. Just through pure speculation. ahem.
i mean, yeah, not me either, but like... somebody, yeah. somebody. dunno who. not me, that's for sure.
Class observe the closeted masochists quietly admitting their kink to the public. The world may never fully understand their desire for pain.
I'm sure it was multiple people
Couldn't love a scene more, kills me every time. And to all you Supernatural fans out there, Alastair quotes this when Dean tortures him! "It's your professionalism that I respect"
HAHA! I never knew that, Awesome.
darciehealy this is my favorite scene next to "feed me Seymour"
Bruhhh omg I never realized 😂 Definitely did not expect to see Supernatural referenced in this comment section of all things
Murray ad libbed almost every line in this scene
How do you know that?
IMDb trivia
Team Rocket I'll take a look.
+Team Rocket Lmao haha wow that's talent him and Steve Martin I was laughing so hard
he also reenacted this when he went to his real dentist even after the movie came out lol
Murray is just so believable here. If I didn’t know any better I’d think he just wandered on set and started screwing with the actors and it just so happened to end up in the film. Like he heard Steve Martin was playing a goofy, show-stealing part and he just wanted to upstage the guy for fun.
He did!! Most of his lines in this scene were improvised 🙃

"Shut up!"
(pause)
"...Yes, doctor!"
I'm in a production of Little Shop of Horrors and the director put in the extra cameo characters from the movie and I'm playing Arthur Denton
Derek Sands Excellent - good luck! :-)
+drumstick74 Thank you so much! we're going through tech week and it's been stressful but I've been getting compliments :-)
drumstick74 is this markplier
SHUT UP NURSE !
Lol
Came 'ere for this.
A sadist meeting a masochist + great casting = a very unique and hilarious scene.
This is funny. I would assume that to Orin (the dentist), hearing patient ask for a root canal is like hearing he's going on a date with Jennifer Lawrence. Finding out that his patient is a masochist, is like finding out his date is Martin Lawrence..
djmocha7 he enjoys how much his patients hate the pain their in. The fact that Murray can withstand it and even enjoy it as much as he does upsets him greatly.
You do realize that you would probably have more fun with Martin Lawrence than Jennifer right? You have literally zero chance of doing anything other than hear her talk about how hard it is being hot in Hollywood but with Martin imagine all the great stories he would tell. So you'd either end up with blue balls staring at Jennifer all night or actually have some fun with Martin.
@Mcgriffin67 Touché. Ok. Hearing that his date looks like her, but finding out that she looks like him. Keep in mind, I’m kidding. I know that “pretty” people don’t always make good dates, and people with “great personalities” don’t always make bad ones
hahaha
Fun Fact: My dentist is a cousin of Bill Murray and everytime I go to his office I bring up this film and he's just like omg
Wow lol
Nice! My dentist is Steve Martin's cousin!
@@MrMADTROY
Awesome
Cool! My dentist is a cousin
@@MrMADTROY whoa cool! My dad is Steve Murray’s mom
One of the things that made this movie great was the excellent casting.
The doododooooooo yes yes dadyyyss homeee i lost it i was lauging
The happy ending too, the humour and the brilliant soundtrack.
The sickness just goes to a whole new level when he grabs him by the shoulders in ecstasy.
I know, isn't it great?
@@rainecloud in a weird way it is. It's almost like watching a Jackass bit.
It seems like he's saying candy bar to make the dentist even angrier. Because usualy after a procedure the dentist says not to have any sweets.
@@rainecloud I cringed, but I didn't look away.
as kids me and my brother LOST IT during the shoulder grab and moaning...its absolutely freaking hysterical
>not shipping these two
seriously this movie (especially the screenplay) has a lot of sexual undertones and it does it so well.
There are only a few scenes in the world that a truly excellent and this just happens to be one of them.
these braces are terrifying
I laugh every single time I watch this scene. It never gets old.
Yes
Seeing how utterly disturbed Orin is makes me laugh
I've seen Bill Murray and Steve Martin separately in so many movies since I was a kid, and I'm not overexaggerating when I say that this is literally the best performance I've seen out of both of them
😅
Bill Murray at his finest!...mind you, even on his worst day, he`s still better than most comedy actors
*cough* *cough* adam sandler *cough*
Jean Kirschtein Is Adam Sandler a comedy actor?
+Bill Proud he considers himself one
Jean Kirschtein He`s on his own there then lol
He sounds like exactly Brian Wilson.
LAWL "I'm gonna tell all my friends about you" XD XD XD XD
I really enjoy the fact Bill Murray didn't portray an overly fem, obviously gay dude which would have been cliche and sort of offensive and boring. He is sometimes coy and other times seems a bit smitten by the good doctor but the driving force behind everything he does is clearly due to a masochistic nature. I love how well that comes through instead of simply playing a cartoonish stereotype where everyone goes away thinking was just some gay guy in love with the dentist.
Because he’s not gay. He’s dominating the egocentric, immature sadist
"...This is all what I get? A candy bar?" ... "Say Ar! AAAAR! Candy bar!" Super... a masterpiece...
Gene G. Well, what did Bill expect to get?
Bill Murray's best scene EVER!! What a masterpiece performance!
+Christina Moore-Simmons
Perfect, I agree.
What about Bob? He was hilarious in that!
One of the greatest scenes ever.
I think this is the only role Bill Murray has played where the character wasn't a douchy guy
He wasn't a douchy guy in Zombieland.
And you need to see What About Bob. The same character but doesn't enjoy pain like this role lol
You can still call him a creep though
And we was fine as Bunny in Ed Wood
He was Douchy in Orin's point of view. Robbing him of pain and fear because he enjoyed the pain.
The awkwardness of when a masochist who loves to receive pain meets a sadist who loves see people in pain.
This is probably my favorite scene in the whole movie. Bill stuffing the foam in his mouth and setting everything up for Steve to get started os just brilliant lol.
I guess Masochists do love going to painful doctor checkups. And the Dentist being a Sadist had the nerve to call the Masochist patient a sicko hahahaha! Another thing Masochists "LOVE" being talked down too. 1:03
+watchensee IKR? You would've thought he'd enjoy it.
+TheRedNeckGamer777 Well the Sadist couldn't enjoy it, because the Masochist liked it. Sadists get off on the pain & suffering of others.
pretty broad generalizations with little grounding. Many sadists very much enjoy the masochist getting off on it... And masochists aren't usually immune to pain in general: torture still hurts. Also, sadism is not the same as degredation. Masochists aren't always into put-downs, it depends. The masochist is actually quite the freak compared to the dentist. The dentist is a typical sadistic sociopath... the masochist is able to take pain that most simply cannot, and enjoy the entire experience (and also enjoy degredation)
@@vladamirkalashnikov3704 At least masochists aren't into hurting other though, I mean they're sick alright just not in a bad way.
I just realized how wrong everything was with this scene..
Wrong? I think you mean RIGHT. ;)
Raine Cloud Nothing wrong with that scene.....
+cindy hernandez The Dentist is a Sadist, gets off on inflicting pain/suffering on others. The patient (Bill Murray character) is a Masochist, gets off on his own pain/suffering. So actually that's a perfect sexual couple
As shown in the scene For the masochist yes but for the sadist no since the person likes the pain which means he won't show pain or suffering just enjoyment but I do see where you're coming from it would because one would be happy to be beat and the other would be glad to do it
watchensee his patient was having a time of pleasure I think he is gay...
It's the hand on his shoulder for me, such an intimate gesture 🤣😂😅
Whenever I have to go to the dentist, I wish I was like Bill Murray's character in this.
Bill Murray is playing the role that was previously played by Jack Nicholson in Roger Corman's original film.
I didn`t know that. How interesting. Thank you.
Yes and I believe it was Jack Nicholson's first movie role.
Patient Grasshopper yes it was
@@jackhorsleygreen4045 I will tell u what. If Bill Murray was with Martin and Chase in “The Three Amigos.” Now that would have been a comedy classic. You wonder that after Martin and Murray in Little Shop that they didn’t pair up at least for that movie
"Goddamn sicko"
That's rich coming from him. XD
and that's coming from a sadistic person
@@johncoffey6108 it's projection.
sadists, psychopaths and extreme narcissists can't recognize their own faults and typically project that on to others.
So next time they project a whole litany of issues, it very much likely describes what is wrong with them.
As soon as he said that, I was like....
"Look who's talking."
Bill Murray has gifted us a ton of brilliant comedic moments, but in my opinion this is the absolute zenith.
This scene went way over my head as a kid, rewatching the movie and the scene now...
At 0:43 he sounds like Johnny Bravo.
+CommentPoster10 And to think he says, "Oooh, Mama!"
+CommentPoster10 Both of them sound like Elvis. Weird Al effect in full swing.
+CommentPoster10 That's because both characters are based on Elvis. In LSHOH all the characters with singing parts are based on 1950s singers/style of singers.
The funniest thing I believe Bill Murray and Steve Martin ever did.
4:22 Oh, the irony.
Love Bill putting on the light and the napkin and his protective stuff by himself. Guess he's doing Orin a favor.
Bill is playing the same character that a young unknown at the time actor, Jack Nicholson was doing in the original movie. He also put on the napkin on himself. Just a fun fact.
This is more romantic than Romeo and Juliet
I find it hilarious that, as bad as a sadist is, he finds a masochist a "goddammit sicko" 😆
I swear to god I just saw this movie for the first time tonight and this scene made me laugh so hard I literally can’t stop. Had to see it 5x more. It’s too funny ❤ these 2 actors are so gifted the readymade this movie Great!
Bill Murray’s genius at its best. Incredible scene.
1:48 why do I always crack up at that bit😂
This was Murray's Best Performance EVER saw this at the Movies In 1986 While in Juvenile Detention forgot i was the property of the STATE for the length of this Movie and this Skit was my All Time Favorite

3:48 perfect face
On how I love this scene. Haha, Bill Murray is a genius
If they were to do a remake of this Jim Carrey would be great for Bill Murray's role!
I was thinking the exact same thing, but mostly because in the original from the 60s, Jack Nicholson seemed very much like Jim Carrey.
i hope they dont, they dud announce one where Chris Evans will play Orin (the dentist) im not sure if thats still happening, i hope not, he could never pull off being this sadistic with such glee like Steve Martin did
This was the first and ONLY time Martin and Murray these two titans worked together and each of their performances shows their pure comedic brilliance. Martin's facial expressions, the way he pushes the seat pump, smoothly pulls out the tools and views them with confidence and evil, and Murray... his adlib expressions of joy and comments... this kills me every time I see it.
1989, Tokyo, going away party for a colleague at Sony. Beer was flowing, French girls running around and we watched this movie. So funny, still holds up.
As good as Bill Murray is in this, I'd LOVE to see Jack Nicholson come back for this role. lol
Can he even sing?
xxkewldudexx Check out The Who's Tommy.
Omg Bobsheaux what are you doing here!!!
@@xxkewldudexx In the original (non-musical) version, he played Bill Murray's character. If he came back, he wouldn't have to sing.

OTP right here.
Brilliant improvised comedy scene by two masters.
Bill Murray: Masochist
Steve Martin: Annoyed Daddy
"Let's take a look at that mouth, say ah."
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
I was lucky enough to play Bill Murray's role in this at high school theatre... best 2 week detention I ever got
Saw this in the late 80s as a kid, and to this very day I still say *THAAAAANK YOUUUUUU* it always goes over peoples heads, but one day, I'll say it, and someone will understand, and I'll have met a new friend 3:03 lol
Four and a half minutes of comedic perfection.
You know a bonafide sadist has met his ultimate match and is rethinking reality when his last words are:
*"...goddamn sicko."*
That "oh my god" at 2:02 as he sees the 1st of many tools he has to work with.
Candy bar! Candy bar!
Timeless masterpiece, I love everyone involved in this picture 🙏
I just saw this movie for the first time at the library, and the librarian gave a little talk discussing the film's history before it began. At one point discussing the cast she said, "the masochist dental patient is played by Bill Murray." So it kinda ruined the surprise for me. I would've been SHOCKED at what I was seeing had I not been warned, lol.
Hell, I'm STILL shocked at what the fuck I just saw! O_O
Still a more likable dentist then Walter Palmer. The last time I went to the dentist, virtually every dentist was in a grouchy mood. Especially since I'm from MN.
This feels like an Idea for an snl skit that would be banned.
Most of the stars in this movie are in SNL.
This scene is hilariously bizarre.
Me, my friend and my mother all agree this is the best scene in the WHOLE movie. It's all so... 🏳️🌈
AND the fact that when Seymour comes in he looks terrified... Because y'all know what he thought was happening -
Kills me every time how Bill Murray has his own dental bib and is like adjusting the light on his mouth and putting the cotton in his mouth...dude clearly never had a fear of dentists..or rather embarrassed the fear! lol This movie is a childhood memory along with many others, thank god I lived during an age of excellent movies, both from the past and at that present.
1:15 I love that move the dentist makes
This is my favorite part of the movie. Bill Murray was such a small part but he played the hell out of it.
I remember watching this movie when I was a kid thinking, "wow, he must really like getting his teeth fixed."
... now I know better. Oof.
Goddamn sicko! LOL!
brnleague99 Yeah, well it takes one to know one Orin. I'm talking to the character, by the way.
brnleague99 😂😂😂😂😂
I find it almost impossible to fathom that (except for appearances on SNL), this is the ONLY time Bill & Steve appeared in a scene together.
i used to dread the dentist. but after a period of time when i had to go to the dentist 3 times in one week do deal with a complicated set of fillings, i got used to instead thinking about the dentist as a meditative exercise. nothing else to do but think other thoughts while my mouth is filled with drillings.
I bet you anything that Bill Murray and Steve Martian had a lot of fun with this scene and brought them back to there SNL days.
This is one of my all time, favorite scenes.😁👍
Bill Murray's cameo in this movie is so perfect
As a kid I didn't get it other than the fact that he was robbed of his enjoyment of hearing him scream. That is until I saw Murray grab him by the shoulder like that here 3:38.
I saw this movie when I was a kid and thought this scene was so funny...I’m a teen now and I finally get what this scene was supposed to represent...especially at 3:39.....
For a small role, Bill Murray knows how to make it work.
"They have to do that to remove the jaw."
Watching the scene with the girl really messed me up when I was a young kid
two legends
This is me at the dentist , I wasn't numbed up all the way and the drilling pain was the most enjoyable pain ever , the sad thing is they dentist thought when I jumped in the seat from the enjoyable pain he thought it was from the pain and numbed me up more , I am a masochist so when my school does this play I want to be this character
Fun fact: that was actually Steve Martin breaking character at the end. He was getting pissed off that Bill Murray kept stealing the show
"Goddamn sicko!"
Two of the best actors in one scene. Perfection.
Lmao the way he pumped the chair like an Elvis dance has me crying laughing😂😂😂😂
Bill Murray was like
“Going to the dentist is way better than voicing Garfield and being in the MCU”
Basically me at the dentist. Seriously.
🤣🤣
Brilliant performance by both
2:26 will always make me laugh
The way he says it! 😂
2:27 i’m just gonna leave this here…….your welcome 🤣
Funny thing Bill Murray acted like this when he went to real dentist appointments for a few years after this film was released
And scared the heck out of any sadistic dentist he faced.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
