Great review, although I haven't tried the SR/F yet, I tested most of the zero lineup and I would never use the word divorced, I felt super connected but in a completely different way than a performance gas bike, the motor is way way more responsive than any gas bike. You also feel *much* more connected to nature when riding these things, it's beautiful.
I haven't spent much time on a Zero, but in my short ride, I felt like stripping away all the mechanics of riding (clutch, shifting, sound, etc) shifts your focus to different areas. I felt a lot more tuned in to my surroundings and dialed in to the ride itself. I think a lot of us take for granted how much of our cognitive effort is consumed by the mechanical aspects of a motorcycle. It's probably fair to say that many people enjoy that aspect of a traditional motorcycle, but the BEV motorcycle is a whole new experience that can be enjoyed on its own merit. I *really* want both in my life.
Well said,the fact that this is what we really needed now while we also get used to the traditional engine powered bikes is gonna set a whole new game for many,and i do understand the hates and complains of EV.

Seems like no-one commenting here has ever ridden a bicycle down any kind of slope. Freewheeling is one of the more enjoyable aspects of bicycling - no effort, just the sound of the wind in your ears and your tyres on the road. Now imagine being able to freewheel UPHILL at 80mph. What’s not to like?
I don’t really like super loud motorcycles I like the stock exhaust usually, the part I don’t like is the lack of gears and shifting, automatic cars and bikes put me to sleep

@@portlandshomlessproblem1728 you'd think that would bother you, but it's not like an automatic at all. I'm pretty much full manual-elitist-jerk with cars, but I bought an EV to daily drive last year and love it. With a manual you're shifting to keep the engine in it's optimal powerband so it does what you want it to when you get on the power. With an automatic or CVT you get on the power and have to wait for the transmission to shift before it pulls like you want it to. With an EV there are no gears and no way to disconnect the motor from the wheels. The torque curve is basically a big horizontal line. You get on the throttle and you have torque going to the wheel. It responds like a manual that's always in the right gear, because it never shifts, and you can get more/less torque faster than you can move the throttle.
I've tried the Zero SR/S, and I loved it. I will definitely get an electric bike when prices have become reasonable and mileage per charge doubled. In the mean time, I'm not letting go of my MT-07.
the thing I love about a zero, and I do want one in my stable: it is unapologetically what it is. It is not trying to be something like the live wire, or the smaller electric bike/moto things; it's just a fun motorcycle to ride, that happens to be electric.
I really appreciate this new style of content. The lists with the "Yam" personality are fun but they get old fast! Much more effective to add sprinkles of it like the cowboy outro bit! Thanks for your work.
I've driven an electric sportbike regularly for about 3 years now and I absolutely love it. I love how it accelerates and drives, and how easy it is to maneuver. Driving an electric, you get the whole battery/range/charging thing down really quickly. Never worried about running out of battery, as I know *exactly* how much I got down to the kilometer. Plus they're quiet. And they don't shake or vibrate. Only downside, is that there's no thigh warmer due to the lack of explosions under your junk :(
Can't wait for these things to develop more, get cheaper and have something for every circumstance. I want it super light, low range, decent speed and high acceleration. Preferably in a Supermoto package.

I had a similar experience on a much smaller level but still cool after riding a 125cc Yamaha scooter and then renting a Gogoro electric scooter in Taiwan. It was so cool, and the controls were exactly the same as you don't have a clutch on a scooter either. The experience of having instant torque and power but without the hot noisy and inefficient petrol engine was a great experience and if I lived in Taiwan I would definitely buy one. They also solved the recharging problem with battery swap stations all over the country that it's quicker than filling up petrol.
Yeah it will be a dying art to be able to ride a manual bike, people will wonder how and why we put up with it. I always thought the gear changing to stay in the torque range was a waste of time and we needed something better and electric is the answer.
Tbh the fxs is definitely their coolest bike, I'm just happy the prices are finally coming down to where I will be able to buy one second hand in a few years

As someone who learned to ride on a zero, I have the opposite reaction than most riders have about the clutch and shifter. Whenever I ride a "normal" manual moto, it feels ancient and obsolete, to have to shift in order to get up to speed feels like needless complexity with gaps in power delivery. Being able to go from 0-100 with just throttle is really amazing, to use a manual afterwards feels like going backwards. I personally feel like the obsession with manual transmissions is holding motorcycling back. Gas bikes have a lot of advantages, from initial cost, top speed, and refuel time, but for my money the experience of riding electric is just much better. I do recommend putting a bicycle bell on it, for pedestrians in parking lots.
Welcome to the future. For the weekend rider, not to worry if it's going to start today is a big plus. You could literally not go to a mechanic for over a year. You didn't really touch on that point for those that don't know how to use a wrench. And some of the lighter bikes for younger people or women, with no maintenance, it opens up a whole crowd of riders. You just happen to have the heaviest one they make. I love to have the FX.
A guy I used to work with had a Zero SR. He decided to try a burnout at a stoplight we were sitting at and catapulted himself into the car in front of us. Luckily he and the bike (and car) were okay, but it was the funniest thing I've ever seen
I have an electric motorcycle for 2 month now, and the first rides were crazy. No shifting. Instead of clutch there is the rear brake like a scooter has. No noise, its damn disturbing just hearing the wind, rolling brakes etc....
It took me about a month to stop trying to downshift when coming to a stop. They're fun bikes. One other item: There's a throttle cutoff with the kickstand. You can't accidentally launch it while getting off the bike.
I'm very interested in one of these bikes. My only real take away is the poor range on the highway/freeways. I feel maybe with next gen batteries on the horizon it could be better. Also it has great acceleration, but lacks the top speed. Which is great for regular street use, but a bit of a drawback if you were at a track. I feel with a next gen solid state or other battery, and maybe a CVT or something to give it a little more "gear ratio" it would be the perfect bike. Overall I'm impressed from what I've seen and read. The reliability and simplicity of it make it easy for anyone to own. Not tinkering needed, the the maintenance intervals are more like a car or trucks than a bike. I mean what, check your tire and air pressure, make sure the brakes work, and the belt is tight, that's about it. Don't need to winterize it, no oil changes, nothing. It's the perfect toy, whenever your in the mood just roll it out of the garage and go have fun. I'm really interested in where EV'S will be in 4 to 8 years. They're very compelling, but just not quite there for me yet, almost. A little more range and a faster charge time, and I'll gladly walk into a dealer and slap a sales man with a fat stack of bills and say gimme.
Yup, electric power is awesome and has such potential. There is no doubt in my mind that it will be the future power plant for not just bikes but all land/air/sea vehicles if... and its a big IF... we can figure out a proper battery. The technology is there in every single way except for energy storage. A quick look at "energy density" of liquid fuels vs batteries and it becomes abundantly clear why electric vehicles are no way near practical yet. Its not even close. Edit: Oh and you say 4-8 years... tbh its not like waiting for the next generation car or computer... its down to fundamental chemical and physical barriers and those don't just get torn down every couple years. It could be 4 days (unlikely) or 4 years, 4 decades, or even 4 centuries before some new ultra dense (and SAFE) power source is discovered. We couldn't just throw in mini fusion reactors for example if we cracked that in the next decade. Its really a tough problem. Here's hoping though, the world would be revolutionized!
@@ec5838 Many breakthroughs have been made on next generation batteries already. Some just need the facilities and equipment developed to put them into mass production. Others are still in testing or development phases. This is very high priority research, because whoever develops the first next gen cutting edge batteries will dominate the EV and electronics market for awhile. Solid state lithium ion, Rechargeable Zinc-Air, and Toyotas Sulfur based batteries are but a few on the verge of hitting the market very soon. Hybrids and possibly Hydrogen Fuel cell vehicles are a also alternative solutions. Who knows, electric driveterrains can be incorporated in a wide variety of ways. Solar is making vast advancements too, and there's also the possibility of incorporating wireless induction charging at traffic signals and other places in some cities. The development of energy technology is booming right now, and the market is becoming quite competitive again. I'm interested to see what manufacturers will have to offer in their portfolio by 2025.
@@Demonoid1990 I agree there is massive incentive and people are definetly trying, no question! However, even if someone figures out a better battery, that is: A-cost effective, B-safer, C-faster to recharge, etc etc (lots of challenges besides "more power") how much better? Will it be 20%? Maybe 200%? Even if its twice as good, its still gonna be 100x worse than hydrocarbons. Look at those charts that compare the energy density of gasoline to lithium batteries, its outrageous! Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a significantly better battery, and it would still revolutionize many things, but man... we'd need some sort of Star Trek level battery to permanently dethrone petroleum based fuels.
Great except when fuel supply is used up...you can't just get $15.00 worth of gas. Your gonna need probably hundreds of dollars for.a new battery. Then what do you do with the old one? And your talking hours of down time to recharge. So you should not be in a hurry to go long distance. ..
I ride a 2019 Zero S and a 2013 Triumph Daytona 675. Love the daytona but it's really for the track only. I commute daily and the Zero is a no brainer. Not just money saving wise but the street performance of a Zero is unbeatable. The instant torque will have u zigzagging through traffic and no more shifting into neutral at red lights.
After many years of owning and daily driving Harley’s and sport bike’s. A 2013 Zero S is my one and only now! I can’t say enough good about it. No clutch or gears etc. Great!
I'm lucky to work at Zero where I am part of the team that assembles bikes. I can tell you we have high standards. Technically every bike is made by hand. I'm a smaller guy 5'6", 130 and a newbie rider (whats your feelings about 2010 Honda Relfex 250?), and I've been telling the higher ups, we need to make smaller, the escooter market is taking off with price of gas. They always said "Do I know what's involved in making a new model bike?" Meaning...money Since I love you and your channel, here's a little secret... We are developing a bike that will be in the 125cc range. Gonna take about 18 months to develop. I hope they have employee discounts.

2.6 sec on the Rocket 3 on the Zero. Even a day one rider can get the 3 sec out on the Zero because the torque line is straight and there is no chance for the tire to spin out meanwhile with the Triumph you launch that sucka like a noob you are dead *DEAD*
The rocket 3 is way faster than the Zero...the math is pretty simple, the Zero has 630ft-lbs at the rear wheel while the Rocket 3 has 1380ft-lbs at the rear wheel in first gear...considering the rocket is only 40% heavier but has over twice the torque yeah it's gonna dominate the Zero
The difference is that with electric motors you get 100% torque immediately. With an engine, there’s a split second for the throttle to open. Then most engines don’t make very much torque below 1,500 rpm so you have to drop the clutch at ~3,500 rpm and wait the split second for the clutch to engage. Plus there’s the split second for the motor mounts to flex, whereas electric motors are usually hard mounted. Those are all measured in hundredths of seconds, but it adds up. At 0.50 seconds, the Rocket is accelerating faster, but at 0.05 seconds, the Zero is launched while the Rocket hasn’t really started moving yet. The throw you off the back of the seat instant torque application of the Zero is something that may not win drag races, but you really feel it.
The torque on this drains the blood from your head a bit like a wild roller coaster. It caught me off guard and I now constantly goose it around traffic at highway speed. 60 to 100 in no time

I remember first moving my SR/S from the dealership when I came to pick it up, to over where my daughter's car was to get my gear. It was soooooo weird after decades of gas bikes... it was as if a ghost walked around behind me and pushed the bike over to the car. IMO the acceleration of this bike is similar to the thrust of an aircraft, no sudden change of acceleration, just huge amounts of it at a constant rate. Also if you want 100 percent for performance, you arent going to get it from "Sport" mode... you have to customize a ride mode and set the sliders all the way to 100. I think sport is like 90 percent. You can also turn off traction control to reclaim that little bit extra it holds back from you but believe me, that's a baaaaad idea. Yes you can. No you shouldn't.
I had a go on one of these last week . The low down torque was crazy ! So fast and I liked the sound of the motor. I’m frustrated I can’t own one due to no where to charge it and the cost . When they’re more affordable and there are local chargers I want one for sure .

Just plug it into 120v outlet overnight. Wale up fully charged in the morning. 120v can charge an ev car about 40 miles overnight i imagine a motorcycle would be much higher
I have a Livewire - at an electric station it goes 0 to full in an hour, charges to full at home in 8 hours - keep in mind that the last 20% takes disproportionately more time. It has 130 miles of range at least (but you wake up fully charged every day so unless you have a 3 hours commute, that's not a big deal. On leisure rides i charge while i eat). It's great. Person I ride with has a gas motorcycle and we spend more time going to gas stations to fill up his motorcycle than we do filling up mine.
I have a Honda CTX700 with the DCT so no clutch lever. It's weird at first but now I absolutely do not miss that lever at all. Although it's still a six speed and I always use 'manual' mode, it's just a flick of finger or thumb. That DCT is now in the Goldwing, so I expect Honda to start slapping it in everything. Frankly, if they put the CTX motor and DCT in a naked bike, it'd be the ultimate beginner/intermediate sport ride. You can't stall, the DCT acts as a slipper clutch, and fully automatic or a manual mode-- slap full fairings on it and it'd sell faster than 300's.

Silence is good but one thing I'm not seeing anyone talking about is how much danger it can put u in around other motorists and how you will have to change your riding style to be more visible or having some presence on the road for your safety
Bought one of these last summer. 2k miles before winter and didn’t change riding style one bit. If your relying on noise to protect you, your already doing it wrong.
It was like 161-200 miles but the max you had to pay an additional 2 grand or so extra....with how big it is truly..with normal riding I wonder how far it really would go..
I'm curious to see the future of e-motorcycles like this one. I can imagine that in a couple of years, once the battery size decreases & mileage increases, we'll see lots more of these on the road.

"Energy Density" is a real problem here. Can't just shrink the lithium battery and get 4x the energy out of it. New battery tech is needed before they will ever come close to challenging conventional liquid fuel. And that will probably take decades if not centuries... I hope not, just being realistic tho...

But who knows, looking at how increasingly fast new tech has been showing up, we might see a big change sooner than later. Come to think of it, hydrogen is very slowly creeping into the car market. If you're used to a clutch you'd like my electric bicycle. I got used to pulling the left brake in slightly for motor cut out to change gear without pedal assist. Now I have the shift sensor it's not necessary in most cases.
all depends on your taste, if you love loud pipes and have after market exhausts etc and use your car for commuting you probably wouldn't find an electric bike that fun. But if you commute on your motorcycle then you'd choose a smooth morning ride to work every time over a rattling engine

I tested 3 different Zeros a couple of years ago, awesome experience and everything on this video is absolutely spot on. I just couldn’t get past the range limitations, I have a Kaw. Versys 1000 that I ride currently as my baseline for these bikes. I am retired and only ride for pleasure vs commuting etc. If I was working and had access to a charging station I would have bought one then, if I spent time off rd and had the skills ( the electric dirt bikes are sick) I’d buy one of those. Unfortunately until they can increase their range to 200+ miles with highway speeds as part of that distance I’m waiting. Maybe battery technology will improve soon and then I’m all in!

Isn't it interesting that people have for decades shot down mopeds/scooters as not being real motorcycles because they lack a clutch and it's simply twist-and-go riding, and yet electric motorcycles that effectively bridge the gap between traditional manual transmission bikes and scooters don't seem to illicit the same kind of thinking. As someone who only rides scooters (my main ride being a Honda Forza 300) I am super excited about the prospect of getting my hands on an electric bike. They take everything you want from a scooter, ease of riding/extra storage/no clutch, and combine that stuff you're missing from a traditional bike, larger wheel dia/smoother cruising/speed/forward seating position. All that is missing for me would be having the rear break wired to the left handlebar rather than the right foot, but I'm sure that modification is achievable.
Range is the most limiting factor, in combination with charge time. Your buddies don’t want to wait for you to charge up on a group ride. The Zero does look good.
@@TheSmiddy - I own 2 Tesla’s and understand the practice of the at home refueling station, all that being said. Riding for 80 miles and having to stop for an hour or so with a group of Petrol Motorbike riders is not going to happen. So the E-Motorcycle is limited to speed of recharge and range.
I get the impression that you guys never rode a minibike with a centrifugal clutch when you were just kids. Give it throttle and the mainshaft spins faster and the counterweights overcome the springs and the inner hub grabs the outer and off you go.
Last year i made a 21 page assignment in school about the difference between a conventional motorcycle and the SR/F. I compared the SR/F to a MT-09 and the SR/F won in most of the comparissons, except the price, there's no sound and where i live there is not that many charging stations.
One thing people don’t consider is that you could drain the fluids on the MT-09 and in 10 years it will still be like a new bike (with new tires and fluids). Park this Zero for 10 years and the battery will be worthless, and the replacement won’t be cheap (probably more than the bike is worth).
@@fivespeed3026 well the mt would probably have some rusting and other ageing issues, which would take similarly little effort to avoid as charging up the battery on the sr/f every few months/half year or so (Li-ion batteries have very little self-discharge compared to other battery types).

Not having ridden an electric motorcycle, I'm thinking it could contribute to road safety for newbies in that there is less for them to think about in a hurry (clutch, gears) so they can focus more on what's around them. But at the same time I'm also thinking that the lack of engine noise could work the other way; I'm reassured by the attention-grabbing throb of the V-Twin on my M109R, and I wonder what are the implications for a bike approaching at these speeds with no audible warning. Especially in the early days when nobody is expecting it. It might sound crass but maybe they should add some sound, the way they add that artificial smell to domestic gas to warn of a leak!
Same for Tesla. There's a video around here of one in Paris speeding out of control and crashing in a shopping district. No one saw it coming until it flew past them
One day they may be fine but since the range is limited and there is no real possibility of a long road trip the Zero has no place in my garage. It's probably great if you are a city dweller with a home.
With all these EVs coming out I’m shocked they didn’t build a outside frame or whatever out of solar power panels. Yeah probably won’t super charge the battery but it will still help with little more range. Those little hexagon solar panels as a frame with different colors be cool to look at
I lived in China and owned a Soco Tc and TC max, both electric. Not near as fast as a zero or expensive (bout 2 grand in Beijing). Loved the bikes. Lack of clutch and gears allowed me to focus on riding and the many hazards on the road. Anyone who has ridden in most Asian countries can relate. The biggest issue was the affect of air temp. Too high and it overheats and shuts down. Real cold and sub-performance and decreased battery usage. But for 3/4 of the year a very fun ride.
I know times change, people accept what they grow up with as normal (generalising) but gee the motor, the sounds it makes, how it feels can be the heart and soul of your ride, car or bike. How big is the customising industry for motor vehicles and how much of that revolves around the motor, its looks and sound. Can a whisper quiet electric motor provide the same vibe even if it's faster? For instance a Harley, isn't that big v-twin the guts of the beast? Would it cut it with an electric motor? Going to be interesting.
There is no centrifugal action of the engine aiding the rider to help maintain low speed handling. Watch Jerry Paladino's Motorman riding video and probably the single biggest factor aiding police when maneuvering through their low speed technical parade demonstrations (and everyday riding) maneuvering is that they are using engine revs to help keep the bike upright and feathering the clutch. Revs equals stability. They put the mass of the large displacement V twins to use. The principal works on all bikes. You CAN bring up the RPMs in low speed riding (It is strongly recommended that you do so and regularly practice ) and control it with deft clutch control. Keep the shiny side up!

Yes, it is! And Zero bikes have looks to match. I've been really dissapointed about electric bikes because every fucking designer apparently thinks that they have to look like a bad concept art from Tron: legacy. But these things Look like proper motorcycles, and I really dig that. Charging infrastructure in Finland sucks rn, so I'm not sold yet but maybe my next bike could be electric. We'll see how this develops.

Seems like no-one commenting here has ever ridden a bicycle down any kind of slope. Freewheeling is one of the more enjoyable aspects of bicycling - no effort, just the sound of the wind in your ears and your tyres on the road. Now imagine being able to freewheel UPHILL at 80mph. What’s not to like?

I'm pretty much full manual-elitist-jerk with cars, but I bought an EV to daily drive last year and love it. With a manual you're shifting to keep the engine in it's optimal powerband so it does what you want it to when you get on the power. With an automatic or CVT you get on the power and have to wait for the transmission to shift before it pulls like you want it to.
With an EV there are no gears and no way to disconnect the motor from the wheels. The torque curve is basically a big horizontal line. You get on the throttle and you have torque going to the wheel. It responds like a manual that's always in the right gear, because it never shifts, and you can get more/less torque faster than you can move the throttle.
I've tried the Zero SR/S, and I loved it. I will definitely get an electric bike when prices have become reasonable and mileage per charge doubled. In the mean time, I'm not letting go of my MT-07.

the thing I love about a zero, and I do want one in my stable: it is unapologetically what it is. It is not trying to be something like the live wire, or the smaller electric bike/moto things; it's just a fun motorcycle to ride, that happens to be electric.

I've driven an electric sportbike regularly for about 3 years now and I absolutely love it.
I love how it accelerates and drives, and how easy it is to maneuver.
Driving an electric, you get the whole battery/range/charging thing down really quickly. Never worried about running out of battery, as I know *exactly* how much I got down to the kilometer.
Plus they're quiet. And they don't shake or vibrate.
Only downside, is that there's no thigh warmer due to the lack of explosions under your junk :(

I had a similar experience on a much smaller level but still cool after riding a 125cc Yamaha scooter and then renting a Gogoro electric scooter in Taiwan. It was so cool, and the controls were exactly the same as you don't have a clutch on a scooter either. The experience of having instant torque and power but without the hot noisy and inefficient petrol engine was a great experience and if I lived in Taiwan I would definitely buy one. They also solved the recharging problem with battery swap stations all over the country that it's quicker than filling up petrol.

As someone who learned to ride on a zero, I have the opposite reaction than most riders have about the clutch and shifter. Whenever I ride a "normal" manual moto, it feels ancient and obsolete, to have to shift in order to get up to speed feels like needless complexity with gaps in power delivery. Being able to go from 0-100 with just throttle is really amazing, to use a manual afterwards feels like going backwards. I personally feel like the obsession with manual transmissions is holding motorcycling back.
Gas bikes have a lot of advantages, from initial cost, top speed, and refuel time, but for my money the experience of riding electric is just much better.
I do recommend putting a bicycle bell on it, for pedestrians in parking lots.
Christ mate get yourself a horse, u won't have to change gear on that either, using gears is all part of riding a bike

Welcome to the future. For the weekend rider, not to worry if it's going to start today is a big plus. You could literally not go to a mechanic for over a year. You didn't really touch on that point for those that don't know how to use a wrench. And some of the lighter bikes for younger people or women, with no maintenance, it opens up a whole crowd of riders. You just happen to have the heaviest one they make. I love to have the FX.
I did a demo ride on the Harley LiveWire last summer. The acceleration was impressive. The handling was very good... for a Harley...

A guy I used to work with had a Zero SR. He decided to try a burnout at a stoplight we were sitting at and catapulted himself into the car in front of us. Luckily he and the bike (and car) were okay, but it was the funniest thing I've ever seen
I have an electric motorcycle for 2 month now, and the first rides were crazy. No shifting. Instead of clutch there is the rear brake like a scooter has. No noise, its damn disturbing just hearing the wind, rolling brakes etc....
J Juan brakes are one of the best brands for motorcycle racing, I'm surprised you didn't know, they are used at Dakar races, as well as Moto GP
It took me about a month to stop trying to downshift when coming to a stop. They're fun bikes.
One other item: There's a throttle cutoff with the kickstand. You can't accidentally launch it while getting off the bike.
I'm very interested in one of these bikes. My only real take away is the poor range on the highway/freeways. I feel maybe with next gen batteries on the horizon it could be better. Also it has great acceleration, but lacks the top speed. Which is great for regular street use, but a bit of a drawback if you were at a track. I feel with a next gen solid state or other battery, and maybe a CVT or something to give it a little more "gear ratio" it would be the perfect bike.
Overall I'm impressed from what I've seen and read. The reliability and simplicity of it make it easy for anyone to own. Not tinkering needed, the the maintenance intervals are more like a car or trucks than a bike. I mean what, check your tire and air pressure, make sure the brakes work, and the belt is tight, that's about it. Don't need to winterize it, no oil changes, nothing. It's the perfect toy, whenever your in the mood just roll it out of the garage and go have fun.
I'm really interested in where EV'S will be in 4 to 8 years. They're very compelling, but just not quite there for me yet, almost. A little more range and a faster charge time, and I'll gladly walk into a dealer and slap a sales man with a fat stack of bills and say gimme.
Yup, electric power is awesome and has such potential. There is no doubt in my mind that it will be the future power plant for not just bikes but all land/air/sea vehicles if... and its a big IF... we can figure out a proper battery. The technology is there in every single way except for energy storage. A quick look at "energy density" of liquid fuels vs batteries and it becomes abundantly clear why electric vehicles are no way near practical yet. Its not even close.
Edit: Oh and you say 4-8 years... tbh its not like waiting for the next generation car or computer... its down to fundamental chemical and physical barriers and those don't just get torn down every couple years. It could be 4 days (unlikely) or 4 years, 4 decades, or even 4 centuries before some new ultra dense (and SAFE) power source is discovered. We couldn't just throw in mini fusion reactors for example if we cracked that in the next decade. Its really a tough problem. Here's hoping though, the world would be revolutionized!
@@ec5838 Many breakthroughs have been made on next generation batteries already. Some just need the facilities and equipment developed to put them into mass production. Others are still in testing or development phases. This is very high priority research, because whoever develops the first next gen cutting edge batteries will dominate the EV and electronics market for awhile. Solid state lithium ion, Rechargeable Zinc-Air, and Toyotas Sulfur based batteries are but a few on the verge of hitting the market very soon.
Hybrids and possibly Hydrogen Fuel cell vehicles are a also alternative solutions. Who knows, electric driveterrains can be incorporated in a wide variety of ways. Solar is making vast advancements too, and there's also the possibility of incorporating wireless induction charging at traffic signals and other places in some cities. The development of energy technology is booming right now, and the market is becoming quite competitive again. I'm interested to see what manufacturers will have to offer in their portfolio by 2025.
@@Demonoid1990 I agree there is massive incentive and people are definetly trying, no question! However, even if someone figures out a better battery, that is: A-cost effective, B-safer, C-faster to recharge, etc etc (lots of challenges besides "more power") how much better? Will it be 20%? Maybe 200%? Even if its twice as good, its still gonna be 100x worse than hydrocarbons. Look at those charts that compare the energy density of gasoline to lithium batteries, its outrageous! Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a significantly better battery, and it would still revolutionize many things, but man... we'd need some sort of Star Trek level battery to permanently dethrone petroleum based fuels.
Great except when fuel supply is used up...you can't just get $15.00 worth of gas. Your gonna need probably hundreds of dollars for.a new battery. Then what do you do with the old one? And your talking hours of down time to recharge. So you should not be in a hurry to go long distance.

I ride a 2019 Zero S and a 2013 Triumph Daytona 675. Love the daytona but it's really for the track only. I commute daily and the Zero is a no brainer. Not just money saving wise but the street performance of a Zero is unbeatable. The instant torque will have u zigzagging through traffic and no more shifting into neutral at red lights.
I feel like if I had an electric motorcycle, I'd turn into one of the bikers from South Park and just start making noises on my own

2.6 sec on the Rocket 3 on the Zero. Even a day one rider can get the 3 sec out on the Zero because the torque line is straight and there is no chance for the tire to spin out meanwhile with the Triumph you launch that sucka like a noob you are dead *DEAD*
The rocket 3 is way faster than the Zero...the math is pretty simple, the Zero has 630ft-lbs at the rear wheel while the Rocket 3 has 1380ft-lbs at the rear wheel in first gear...considering the rocket is only 40% heavier but has over twice the torque yeah it's gonna dominate the Zero
The difference is that with electric motors you get 100% torque immediately. With an engine, there’s a split second for the throttle to open. Then most engines don’t make very much torque below 1,500 rpm so you have to drop the clutch at ~3,500 rpm and wait the split second for the clutch to engage. Plus there’s the split second for the motor mounts to flex, whereas electric motors are usually hard mounted. Those are all measured in hundredths of seconds, but it adds up. At 0.50 seconds, the Rocket is accelerating faster, but at 0.05 seconds, the Zero is launched while the Rocket hasn’t really started moving yet.
The throw you off the back of the seat instant torque application of the Zero is something that may not win drag races, but you really feel it.
The torque on this drains the blood from your head a bit like a wild roller coaster. It caught me off guard and I now constantly goose it around traffic at highway speed. 60 to 100 in no time

I remember first moving my SR/S from the dealership when I came to pick it up, to over where my daughter's car was to get my gear. It was soooooo weird after decades of gas bikes... it was as if a ghost walked around behind me and pushed the bike over to the car. IMO the acceleration of this bike is similar to the thrust of an aircraft, no sudden change of acceleration, just huge amounts of it at a constant rate.
Also if you want 100 percent for performance, you arent going to get it from "Sport" mode... you have to customize a ride mode and set the sliders all the way to 100. I think sport is like 90 percent.
You can also turn off traction control to reclaim that little bit extra it holds back from you but believe me, that's a baaaaad idea. Yes you can. No you shouldn't.

I had a go on one of these last week . The low down torque was crazy ! So fast and I liked the sound of the motor. I’m frustrated I can’t own one due to no where to charge it and the cost . When they’re more affordable and there are local chargers I want one for sure .

You did not even mention its range, its limitations, and how long it takes to charge.
Just plug it into 120v outlet overnight. Wale up fully charged in the morning. 120v can charge an ev car about 40 miles overnight i imagine a motorcycle would be much higher

I have a Livewire - at an electric station it goes 0 to full in an hour, charges to full at home in 8 hours - keep in mind that the last 20% takes disproportionately more time. It has 130 miles of range at least (but you wake up fully charged every day so unless you have a 3 hours commute, that's not a big deal. On leisure rides i charge while i eat). It's great. Person I ride with has a gas motorcycle and we spend more time going to gas stations to fill up his motorcycle than we do filling up mine.
I have a Honda CTX700 with the DCT so no clutch lever. It's weird at first but now I absolutely do not miss that lever at all. Although it's still a six speed and I always use 'manual' mode, it's just a flick of finger or thumb. That DCT is now in the Goldwing, so I expect Honda to start slapping it in everything.
Frankly, if they put the CTX motor and DCT in a naked bike, it'd be the ultimate beginner/intermediate sport ride. You can't stall, the DCT acts as a slipper clutch, and fully automatic or a manual mode-- slap full fairings on it and it'd sell faster than 300's.

I can see the range improve when they add a transmission. Either manual or DCT. There are electric motorcycles in Asia that have this.
"Energy Density" is a real problem here. Can't just shrink the lithium battery and get 4x the energy out of it. New battery tech is needed before they will ever come close to challenging conventional liquid fuel. And that will probably take decades if not centuries... I hope not, just being realistic tho...

If you're used to a clutch you'd like my electric bicycle. I got used to pulling the left brake in slightly for motor cut out to change gear without pedal assist. Now I have the shift sensor it's not necessary in most cases.
The question is; does it make you want to get back on it again after you’ve ridden it for a while? Sometimes being so smooth makes it boring.

all depends on your taste, if you love loud pipes and have after market exhausts etc and use your car for commuting you probably wouldn't find an electric bike that fun. But if you commute on your motorcycle then you'd choose a smooth morning ride to work every time over a rattling engine

I tested 3 different Zeros a couple of years ago, awesome experience and everything on this video is absolutely spot on. I just couldn’t get past the range limitations, I have a Kaw. Versys 1000 that I ride currently as my baseline for these bikes. I am retired and only ride for pleasure vs commuting etc. If I was working and had access to a charging station I would have bought one then, if I spent time off rd and had the skills ( the electric dirt bikes are sick) I’d buy one of those. Unfortunately until they can increase their range to 200+ miles with highway speeds as part of that distance I’m waiting. Maybe battery technology will improve soon and then I’m all in!

Isn't it interesting that people have for decades shot down mopeds/scooters as not being real motorcycles because they lack a clutch and it's simply twist-and-go riding, and yet electric motorcycles that effectively bridge the gap between traditional manual transmission bikes and scooters don't seem to illicit the same kind of thinking.
As someone who only rides scooters (my main ride being a Honda Forza 300) I am super excited about the prospect of getting my hands on an electric bike. They take everything you want from a scooter, ease of riding/extra storage/no clutch, and combine that stuff you're missing from a traditional bike, larger wheel dia/smoother cruising/speed/forward seating position. All that is missing for me would be having the rear break wired to the left handlebar rather than the right foot, but I'm sure that modification is achievable.

Range is the most limiting factor, in combination with charge time. Your buddies don’t want to wait for you to charge up on a group ride. The Zero does look good.

@@TheSmiddy - I own 2 Tesla’s and understand the practice of the at home refueling station, all that being said. Riding for 80 miles and having to stop for an hour or so with a group of Petrol Motorbike riders is not going to happen. So the E-Motorcycle is limited to speed of recharge and range.

I get the impression that you guys never rode a minibike with a centrifugal clutch when you were just kids. Give it throttle and the mainshaft spins faster and the counterweights overcome the springs and the inner hub grabs the outer and off you go.
Last year i made a 21 page assignment in school about the difference between a conventional motorcycle and the SR/F. I compared the SR/F to a MT-09 and the SR/F won in most of the comparissons, except the price, there's no sound and where i live there is not that many charging stations.
One thing people don’t consider is that you could drain the fluids on the MT-09 and in 10 years it will still be like a new bike (with new tires and fluids). Park this Zero for 10 years and the battery will be worthless, and the replacement won’t be cheap (probably more than the bike is worth).
@@fivespeed3026 well the mt would probably have some rusting and other ageing issues, which would take similarly little effort to avoid as charging up the battery on the sr/f every few months/half year or so (Li-ion batteries have very little self-discharge compared to other battery types).
@@simonemmert9824 My Zero SR’s battery only lasted 3 years before it completely died. There’s no way this battery lasts 10 years.

Not having ridden an electric motorcycle, I'm thinking it could contribute to road safety for newbies in that there is less for them to think about in a hurry (clutch, gears) so they can focus more on what's around them. But at the same time I'm also thinking that the lack of engine noise could work the other way; I'm reassured by the attention-grabbing throb of the V-Twin on my M109R, and I wonder what are the implications for a bike approaching at these speeds with no audible warning. Especially in the early days when nobody is expecting it. It might sound crass but maybe they should add some sound, the way they add that artificial smell to domestic gas to warn of a leak!
Same for Tesla. There's a video around here of one in Paris speeding out of control and crashing in a shopping district. No one saw it coming until it flew past them

One day they may be fine but since the range is limited and there is no real possibility of a long road trip the Zero has no place in my garage. It's probably great if you are a city dweller with a home.
With all these EVs coming out I’m shocked they didn’t build a outside frame or whatever out of solar power panels. Yeah probably won’t super charge the battery but it will still help with little more range. Those little hexagon solar panels as a frame with different colors be cool to look at
they would never provide enough energy to charge that battery

I lived in China and owned a Soco Tc and TC max, both electric. Not near as fast as a zero or expensive (bout 2 grand in Beijing). Loved the bikes. Lack of clutch and gears allowed me to focus on riding and the many hazards on the road. Anyone who has ridden in most Asian countries can relate. The biggest issue was the affect of air temp. Too high and it overheats and shuts down. Real cold and sub-performance and decreased battery usage. But for 3/4 of the year a very fun ride.

I know times change, people accept what they grow up with as normal (generalising) but gee the motor, the sounds it makes, how it feels can be the heart and soul of your ride, car or bike.
How big is the customising industry for motor vehicles and how much of that revolves around the motor, its looks and sound.
Can a whisper quiet electric motor provide the same vibe even if it's faster?

There is no centrifugal action of the engine aiding the rider to help maintain low speed handling. Watch Jerry Paladino's Motorman riding video and probably the single biggest factor aiding police when maneuvering through their low speed technical parade demonstrations (and everyday riding) maneuvering is that they are using engine revs to help keep the bike upright and feathering the clutch. Revs equals stability. They put the mass of the large displacement V twins to use. The principal works on all bikes. You CAN bring up the RPMs in low speed riding (It is strongly recommended that you do so and regularly practice ) and control it with deft clutch control. Keep the shiny side up!

Been wanting a Zero or Energica as a commuter. Been watching NewZeroland about the bikes. Really want to see your guys take on the bike over the long term.

Yes, it is! And Zero bikes have looks to match. I've been really dissapointed about electric bikes because every fucking designer apparently thinks that they have to look like a bad concept art from Tron: legacy. But these things Look like proper motorcycles, and I really dig that. Charging infrastructure in Finland sucks rn, so I'm not sold yet but maybe my next bike could be electric. We'll see how this develops.
Scooter users will definitely like it. Big bikes / sports bike looks with a scooter easy going driving feature with a nice engine sounds, love it! 👍
