Drilling into your wall while knowing where the studs are and not hitting any wires may seem daunting, but it's simple if you follow these steps.
Step 1: Select a drill bit
Select the right drill bit for the job. If you're drilling into sheetrock or plasterboard, you can use a drywall bit; use a masonry bit for brick, block, stone, quarry tiles, or concrete; use a spur point bit to drill through wood; and use a tile bit for ceramic tile or glass.
Step 2: Be careful of electric wires
Avoid drilling above or below light switches or electrical outlets. If you have a light switch or outlet on the second floor, don't drill below it on the first floor -- the wiring likely goes down and through the first floor.
Tip
You can use a stud finder with a live wire detector as a secondary measure.
Step 3: Watch out for plumbing
Be careful drilling into a bathroom wall -- or into any walls that are shared with a bathroom. You risk hitting and damaging your pipes; this also applies to areas around radiators.
Step 4: Mark your spot
Use a pencil to mark the place on your wall where you want to drill and, using a hammer and countersink, make an indentation where the hole will be.
Tip
If you're drilling into ceramic or glass, make an X with heavy-duty tape over the surface before you drill. This will prevent cracks and chips.
Step 5: Insert the drill bit
Place the tip of your drill bit into the indentation and gently squeeze the drill's trigger, making sure to keep the bit straight.
Step 6: Increase drill speed, finish hole
Slowly increase the bit speed as you apply pressure. When you've achieved your desired depth, slow the bit down, but don't stop it. Keep pressing the trigger and slowly pull the bit from the hole.
Step 7: Insert anchor
Insert an anchor into the hole if you need to, and then screw in your hook or screw. You are now ready to hang decorations on your walls!

Still a helpful video in 2022. Stay Safe y'all ❤️
Oh yeah. I was worried that people wouldn't have walls anymore in 2022
Thanks for the handy tips! I just drilled a hole for the first time!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!!
Also smart to do this in a place you're renting before in a place you own
Why? I'd say its the opposite way around. You'd need permission from the landlord if you are renting anyway...

Great drilling music!
this actually saved me from some research!! THXXX
Very helpful video!
haha random 'don't buy anything from China' ploy at the end
Good video; thanks.
it worked out well thank you
That sign off is amazing
Wow I didn't see that conclusion coming, real escalation LOL 😅
Thanks for this!
thanks i had trouble making a hole into a brick but i just went to grap a bigger drill from my husband seems to work :D
Here I go... wish me luck, hopefully, there are no cables or pipes behind :(
The drill bit that went into the wall for that tiny anchor looked too big.

i watched this and i could only find an electric screwdriver and a drillbit for metal haha, tried it and it worked out fine for 2 small holes into a soft wall, plaster like material.
Impressed
What do you use when the screw has no markings on the top of it. It's just a flat top
all i do is punch a hole in the wall
That's a Kyle move
did not say anything about drilling through metal studs... what bit for metal stud?
Does anyone know how I can mount a TV that is on the other side of a bathroom wall? Every time I drill into the wall I hit something that prevents me from drilling any further.
Hello really appreciate the video, I've tried putting up a curtain pole above my window but after drilling into the wall an inch or 2 I hit something very hard and can't seem to drill past it.. could you please help with any advice? Thank you
It might be that you have a concrete wall or it's a harder material, I had this issue with my curtains. We had to get a very strong drill bit to get through, use some polyfiller and use a new spot. Got there in the end. But it's likely what's behind the wall causing the issue x
You have probably hit a treasure chest. From what you say, I assume it is Incan or Mayan in origin.
@@kencur9690 lmao
Surely you've got the metal reinforcement in the lintel above the window. Use an SDS
Still terrified to drill into my wall...

Should the drilled hole be slightly narrower than the diameter of an anchor?
yep
Yeah that looked too loose. The screw would just fall out.
I once bought a stud finder but I could never use it. It kept beeping every time I touched it.
I am trying to install blinders on my windows but neither my masonry bits nor my regular drill bits will work with my dewalt 20v impact driver. The hooks won’t drill on the top of my window.
Can I do it on someones wall or will it work on mine only?
that is the worlds worst painting
Blame it on China too
Its art

How'd they get Wil Wheaton to do this video?
what's the purpose of finding stud? is that where i should drill or is that where i should avoid to drill?
avoid
none of these videos answer what im looking for. How do you know how far to drill into the wall? should u assume that the drywall is 1/2"? And is there any space between the drywall and stud? What is the average depth someone should drill in the wall to find a stud and place a screw? 1 1/2" ?
I think drill as deep as the length of your screws. I think eyeball the depth lol
Cut the sarcasm, guys; there are those of us (coughmecough) who are basically competent people but can't drill holes in the wall to save their lives! ;)
fuck me 100,000 views on a video of someone drilling into a wall haha
Haha yah now it's over 200k

i was just drilling a little hole hang a picture up and i tripped over and ended up drilling in to my neighbours house i think shes gonna be mad what sud i do just deny it
Did you survive?
How do I know I won't drill through my neighbors wall?
Once the bit is shorter than the thickness of the wall, you're safe.
The stud I'm trying to drill into is tough, my bits won't go into the wood

"Use an anchor if you need to." How do I know if I need to?
If the screw isn't gripping the inside of the hole, or it's exceedingly difficult to get the screw in, then you probably need an anchor. But if you ask me, it's always best to use anchors when putting screws in concrete walls, as a rule. If you don't have anchors you can probably shove 3 or 4 pieces of match sticks (cut to appropriate lengths), or a piece of wood into your hole to serve as makeshift anchoring.
@@caribbeanman3379 Cool idea, the matchsticks--thanks! (Must remove or pre-burn the lightable end first!)

Second I'm jealous
What this video doesn't emphasis is you need to have specific drill for wall material:
Wood,Planks,Board wall = any low tier drill should do, wood drill bit
Stone, Concrete = hammer drill, masonry drill bit... using just normal drill could break your drill... or the drill won't get the job done..

That China things a total unexpected curve ball damn man
