Pete, I used my DV1S a couple weeks ago to spray the rear bumper cover on my son's car. By mistake I use the 1.0 tip for base, i was shocked at how large the fan was and how high the atomization was. I have a few nice guns, prolite, lph 80, meiji R, 3000RP etc but I would say this gun out atomizes all of them. Maybe a lot to do with the 1.0 tip? I swapped to the 1.2 tip for the high solids clear, and again it did a great job. Expensive gun but very impressive. Thanks for the recommendation.
Hi Ken, Yeah, it does have a huge fan for the size of the gun. It doesn't put out loads of material, so it can be a little slow for clear coat. That's why I put it at the top of my top 12 minis. It really is good, although I since got the LPH300, which is also a little gem. I'm still waiting for my Micro version DV1s, but I knew it was going to be a while, cheers mate 👍
If this sprays metallic base coats as well as the full size DV1 and has a large enough spray pattern to paint a full panel, its worth it to me. I've never sprayed a better base coat than what I'm able to spray with the DV1. Thanks for all you do Pete
Your welcome mate, it does spray base coat really well, it's the clear side that you notice the speed issue more as you would expect, i think you would be really happy with it if you got one, they really are very good but we need to bear in mind it's not a full size gun , cheers David 👍
Thank you, it's difficult to put over what I was trying to say, it's a great gun but, as you know, has a pretty hefty price tag, there's no doubt the finish it can produce is excellent, much more suited to smart repairs which is it's intended target of course, i know you do some really good prices so make it more affordable than most, cheers guy's 👍
Great video as always Pete, love the colour you choose this time I bet it really pops in the sunshine and would look great on a set of alloy wheels, as for the gun well it’s disappointing that it never impressed you, sounds like it was designed to do a specific job and does that job well. Cheers mate.
Thanks Steve, it's the price tag i think, as you know i have a big range of mini sprayguns and many of them can give a finish as good as the DV1s but at half the price or less, it's a very good competent spraygun and gives excellent finishes but i was just disappointed overall, hopefully i didn't come over too negative about it, i really did give it a good tryout spraying everything i did with it over 18 days , thanks buddy 👍
@@peteshobbies5383 No not at all, I thought that you was on point with it while being fair. I think if I was more experienced at painting then I wouldn’t have been happy with it as a DIYer and paying professional spray gun prices. Cheers
I'm looking to buy one for painting rims small repairs still haven't made up my mine also looking at sata 4400 ,big advantage is DV1 comes with 2 tips which will be good for spraying hypersilver sata comes with 1 think about 112 gdp for tip set for sata . is spraying of the clear that have me concern about the DV1 the price for a touch up gun is ridiculous from some of these companies
Hi Mate, The DV1s is a very good mini gun and highly recommended if you want a very fine atomisation of clear or base and as you say it comes with 2 tips, it's biggest drawback is the price, you are talking about £380 which, as you say is ridiculous, you could buy 2 good quality guns, one for base and one for clear which is obviously preferable, and this for more or less the same price. The DV1s is head and shoulders above the Sata 4400B imo, I have some full size Sata's which are a joy to use, unfortunately for me the 4400B falls a little short in most respects, if you can afford it and don't mind the DV1s being a little slow it's the one to go for of the two 👍
Even if you colorsand&buff your clearcoat the flatter finish of the DV1S is nice because it means less cutting&buffing needed! The extra time the DV1S takes for spraying, you will win back big time when cutting&buffing. I don't care that spraying takes 10 seconds more as long as my finish is flatter.
Hi Mila, To a degree i would agree but most finishes achieved with today guns don't normally require sanding, buffing and polish, simply de nibing is all that's required. If you are after a super flat finish then yes, the flatter off the gun the better, the time factor isn't the biggest negative for me of the DV1s, it's the price, for the same price you can buy a Kiwami1 set which are a great combination and you have a separate base and clear gun
Hi mate, I've only just picked up an S2 cap, so I will be trying it out directly with the S1 see what different exists, the S2 is a more HVLP cap compared to the S1 so I would think it will be slower, but, we shall see, Cheers mate 👍
Hi Damen, yes it does but its always a compromise, if you're just doing small items then they make a micro version with a smaller tip, that way you can keep the fan more open which helps with finer atomization
If it's the same as mine, then a full-size gun, something around 12cfm or less, would be fine and much better for a full car. You see me using lots of guns, some that need 16 cfm without problems, but if you're doing a full car, then the compressor will run down, and you'll have to wait, which isn't ideal
Very interesting review Pete, yeah as for the price I totally agree that it's a ridiculous asking price, as you know I have a DV1S but I was lucky enough to get mine for free after winning it but I wouldn't pay the asking price. I used mine a couple of times for base and clear and agree it lays down base very nice and is as good as it's big brother the DV1 silver base gun. Have to say I was a bit surprised about your findings on it with clearcoat, from what I remember it was as fast as my SRI ProLite but with a bigger fan and better results but I'm going to try it again as you have got me thinking if it was really that good 🤔🤷
Hi John, i think it gives very similar results, i will try them back to back but what i am thinking is one is over £120 more expensive, so if i was buying for smart repairs i would go AZ4 1.0 for base and Pro Lite S in 1.2 or as i prefer the 1.4, all for the same price, it's definitely the price that's getting to me and if your going to pay that price imo you are better off with a W300 WB 1.2 or 1.0 which are a dream to use and use half the product at a lower pressure, bit more air consumption though, be interesting to see what you think if you have a play again 👍
Yeah I don't know what Devilbiss was thinking when they priced this gun as from what I've found out it's around £100 more than the ProLite-s, if they had kept it more like the price of the ProLite-s they may get better sales, shooting themselves in ones foot comes to mind! I'll try and give the DV1S another trial this week and post my thoughts 👍 thanks Pete.
Hi Pete! You did say that this DV1s is not so good as a clear gun. I wonder, have you seen "GUN MAN"`S review, when he set 3,4bar pressure clear coating car? He also likes that gun very much. How much pressure you did set? (sorry my terrible English) 😊
Hi mate, No, I didn't say the DV1S is not a good clear coat gun. It's actually a very good clear coat gun. In fact, I put it at number one in my top mini gun video. I use 1.75 bar for clear coat, and it lays it like glass, I haven't seen the gunmans review, but I really can't see the need for 3.4 bar on this little gun, but we are all different I guess. My biggest negative with this gun is the price. The second is it rather slow, it's like a slightly bigger LPH80 but much more money. Hope that helps, buddy 👍
I have the 0.7mm/0.9mm with small cap which I use for Cerakote. In all fairness the DV1 with regular c1 air cap takes longer to lay clear down because you run at a low air pressure and move slower than most spray guns. I kind of like it. I feel the problems people had with DV1 clear gun and the c1 cap initially were they were moving so fast they could adjust themselves to the gun. Luckily I was able to pretty quickly
I think you are right. People often just can't change the way they spray, so if they are used to a faster gun, picking up a C1 DV1 will seem frustrating, ultimately giving a dry coverage, which is the biggest criticism leveled against it
Hi Pete Just watched this video on the DV1s as i was thinking of trading in my pro light for one however my dilemma is because i have such a small shed to spray in i am thinking that if i have a gun which uses lower air pressure than the pro lite but puts on clear coat a bit quicker than the LPH80's i have which i love by the way, i find that with the LPH80's because of the lower pressure it doesn't dislodge little bits on the walls and door etc to fall in my clear coat. does this make any sense, i know people will say get a bigger shed but that's not possible. Thanks for you help in advance i've always found in the pass you have given me good impartial advice mate.
Hi Scott, what you have said makes perfect sense, mate . The DV1S is like a bigger LPH80, so it sprays super fine and atomises really well. The drawback, apart from the price, is that it uses more air than the Sri pro lite, and obviously, the LPH80, so wile it runs at a lower pressure than the Sri pro lite it's actually throwing out more air. So in your case I don't think it will help you when compared to the pro lite, it does spray better but so does the LPH80, the reason I like the Sri Pro Lite is it's very good at most things particularly larger areas for a low consumption mini. I estimate the DV1s with the S1 cap uses around 25% more air than the Pro Lite, which obviously has to come out the other end
@scottyoung2995 I can't really think of anything. The 2 you have are probably the best there is in your situation, sure there's loads of others that are similar but nothing better. One thing you will find with most newer stuff is that they all use more air, so you will not see any benefits
@@peteshobbies5383 Ok mate that's why i ask you because i know i will get an honest answer. one other thing to ask is my Pro lite fan size knob only goes from all the way in to 2 turns out is this the same as yours?
Great review sir pete! I have the gun but havent tried it myself. I also wanna try the walcom ego carbonio 190 HTE they say its much better than dv1s. They almost have the same price tag tho thats why i went for dv1s because ill get 2 tips instead of 1 haha! Ill give my dv1s a try.. Have you tried spraying it around 36 psi on clear? I think around that is the sweet spot
Hi James, thank you, i tried it anywhere between 20 and 34psi, the best setting for clear and base was 1.8 bar which is around 25psi, which is more or less what the manufacturer recommends. With the pressure too high it over atomises the clear so tends to be a bit dry, the finish is really good so i was only experimenting to try and speed it up which nothing seems to do, it's a very good spraygun just imo overpriced, cheers buddy 👍
Maybe the paint system is also a factor, what is the brand and mixing ratio of the clear you are using sir pete? Maybe it is possible that the clear is too thin? I have a friend here in our country that also uses DV1S S1 and it lays down like a glass on first coat using high solid clears he sprays on 2.5 bar open open. Anyways sir pete thank you for the review. More videos to come!
@@JMSVV Hi James, i tried it with Upol 2080, cheap HS in this video. Upol 2081 and Max Meyer 0300. It's gives an excellent finish there is no doubt but so do other mini guns at half the price, i think price is the biggest hang up for me
I got your point though, just like the GTIs and DV1s there is no obvious difference. It just feels a little bit premium than the SRi which is a little bit clunky compared to DV1S. Will you be getting walcoms soon?
hello. I'm always watching from Japan. I'm looking for a spray gun suitable for plating-like painting. "Please tell me the recommended spray gun that has the best uniformity and atomization." Thank you
Your comment will disappear when you post the link. Try searching with [Magic Chrome]. "It looks like a boy's helmet instead of full chrome." "Do you have a recommended spray gun for painting large areas? It tends to be uneven."
I see what you mean, in the UK we use, among others, Mipa Vicrom which is a similar thing. I have done a video using this product for the first time as its not something i normally use. This was 4 or 5 months ago although i haven't uploaded it yet and i have used it a few times since. It needs a very fine atomisation spray gun, I used a Devilbiss DV1S because its atomisation is very good, in the bigger size guns, as you are in Japan the Iwata Kiwami4 WB would be good for this if you want a bigger gun, the split tip works well so would suit this very well 👍
Pete, another great vid. 👍 So, is it the Iwata W300/W300WB still your #1 choice when comes to mini spray guns? And what’s the difference between the W300 vs W300WB in real life (except the fact the WB comes from Water Base/Waterborne)?
Thanks Boyan, the WB is quite a different animal compared to the standard W300, it's much better, it's got the split nozzle that the standard guns don't have, the various W300 none WB variants are ok but not in the same league as the WB imo. I like the W300WB better than the DV1s, i recently did a top 12 sprayguns video, I'll put a link below, and i gave the win to the DV1S simply because its very easy to use and great for small repairs, I think the W300WB in 1.2 is a better all round gun but i was trying to be objective in my opinion and trying to look at it objectively rather than personal feelings if that makes sense 👍 ruclips.net/video/vvHHqHTA0ZY/видео.html
Hi Pete Kind of a continuation from your 10 best mini lineup. Getting over the flu finally but still waiting for dhl to bring my new 4400 sr. I agonized over which mini to purchase but in the end this video made my mind up...I do like the versatility that devilbiss gives with all the cap/tip extras they include in their kits, but in the end the ultra fine atomization at the cost of speed that is the hallmark of HVLP (and where devilbiss is going with all their guns) is not something that fits with my spraying style or likes. Iwata and Sata seem to both understand how important speed is to this craft and I find that both brands meet my expectations and just feel right where devilbiss hasn't really met the mark for me since the prolite. It seems value for some overshadows everything and so Devilbiss including multiple cap tip kits wins the day. If you are a slower more deliberate sprayer-which it seems you are-devilbiss direction is great choice. I myself like to move, and as I spray vehicles allover, the speed guns are my choice. I do really appreciate what you are doing with this channel-it helped me easily narrow down my choice without worrying I'd made a bad choice-seeing in real-time is believing. Keep it up my friend.
Thanks Scott, I do prefer a faster gun really, especially for clear coat but with the minis i tried to keep it objective from the point of view that minis are normally for smaller areas/projects so looked at it from that perspective, my personal favourite is the W300WB but as i said, it's not as good value for money as the Devilbiss DV1s because of the extra tip. It's always difficult because we are different and often want different things, I recommend the Sagola 4600 in 1.3xl with DVR Clear cap to a guy from Texas, I really love it, it's a bit of a hose but really good and fast, he didn't like it, it was too fast for what he wanted, so he tried a 1.2 tip, this slowed it do but still wasn't what he wanted, i have a 1.2 tip but use it for base coat in with the Aqua cap which is brilliant but not so good for clear i fine so it's always personal. I do try and bear that in mind when I'm doing these reviews but i guess they will always reflect heavily on the person using them, hope you starting to feel better mate, cheers 👍
Funny you mention the 4600-i have it in 1.3 clear and it's my absolute favorite for repair panel painting-atomization is the best ive ever used-but same concept for me applies-if doing an all over I won't reach for any other guns but 5000rp 1.2 O or iwata kiwami4 1.3. I've bad arthritic shoulder joints and bursa so using a gun that overatomizes will put me in hospital straight away. If I did motorcycles like you I'd never use any other gun but Sagola. 1-3 panels it's perfect and doesn't matter 4 panels out to a complete and it becomes problematic for me. I had toyed with getting the 1.3xl tip to see if the 4600 might dethrone Sata for me....looks like I may do just that. Keep up the great videos -highlight of my day brother.
Hi buddy, that's a really good question and one I've asked myself a few times, they both give excellent finishes, if i had to pick one i think i would go with the W300 WB, it always puts a smile on my face using it and you marvel at how good it lays down, especially clear coat, the DV1s just doesn't do that for me, it's brilliant for basecoat but just doesn't quite match it on clear, i think it's very much a smart repair gun rather than a mini gun that can do much more if that makes sense
I don't know how many years have you guys been spraying cars or doing body work or bumpers or anything like that but I can tell you one thing, I got about 15 years of spraying and this gun is by far the best gun ever produced, ever! Iwata , , sata , sorry but you cannot keep up with this gun. I have tried them all the mini the midi the big guns and all. this is by far is the best paint and clear coat especially there is absolutely no comparison to any other gun I have ever put my hands on. And the price ?? is this expensive ? really? because I just did a bumper for 350 bucks , minus material . I think one more bumper and the gun is paid for......🤔😁
Hi Jan, I agree, it's is a very good mini spray gun but I think for the money they are quite single focus, if that's what you need/want then yes, go for it especially if smart repairs are a persons living. I think it's probably one of the finest atomising guns there is, although people tell me the Ego 190 is a better all round gun and to an extent i would agree, I still think they are over priced, I really like the Iwata Kiwami1 base and clear set and i can get both with cups for the same price, thanks for the comment, i really enjoy getting people's views as it gives me and others more opinions, cheers 👍
@@peteshobbies5383 yes sir . I do this for living so I choose the best quality over price and I have two of these one is clear coat only and one is for paint only.
Have you got a gun you would recommend pete with lower air pressure
@scottyoung2995 I can't really think of anything. The 2 you have are probably the best there is in your situation, sure there's loads of others that are similar but nothing better.
One thing you will find with most newer stuff is that they all use more air, so you will not see any benefits
@@peteshobbies5383 Ok mate that's why i ask you because i know i will get an honest answer. one other thing to ask is my Pro lite fan size knob only goes from all the way in to 2 turns out is this the same as yours?
@scottyoung2995 That sounds about right to me, mate. I'll try and remember to check, but from memory that all it does
Always let the air run before spraying the paint to avoid gun spit.
Cringing while watching this
Maybe best not to watch 😂
@@JMSVV Hi James, the only Walcom on my list is the full size 1.3 clear carbon lite although i need to save some money first 😀
hello. I'm always watching from Japan. I'm looking for a spray gun suitable for plating-like painting. "Please tell me the recommended spray gun that has the best uniformity and atomization." Thank you
Hi, do you mean like chrome plating?
It is a paint that is used for high-gloss aluminum wheels and the interior of luxury cars. "It's not as mirror-like as chrome plating."
Ok, I'm still not sure what it is, do you have any links to the products you use? that may help me see
Your comment will disappear when you post the link.
It needs a very fine atomisation spray gun, I used a Devilbiss DV1S because its atomisation is very good, in the bigger size guns, as you are in Japan the Iwata Kiwami4 WB would be good for this if you want a bigger gun, the split tip works well so would suit this very well 👍
Prize - Pleas
Pete, another great vid. 👍
So, is it the Iwata W300/W300WB still your #1 choice when comes to mini spray guns? And what’s the difference between the W300 vs W300WB in real life (except the fact the WB comes from Water Base/Waterborne)?
Thanks Boyan, the WB is quite a different animal compared to the standard W300, it's much better, it's got the split nozzle that the standard guns don't have, the various W300 none WB variants are ok but not in the same league as the WB imo.
I like the W300WB better than the DV1s, i recently did a top 12 sprayguns video, I'll put a link below, and i gave the win to the DV1S simply because its very easy to use and great for small repairs, I think the W300WB in 1.2 is a better all round gun but i was trying to be objective in my opinion and trying to look at it objectively rather than personal feelings if that makes sense 👍
ruclips.net/video/vvHHqHTA0ZY/видео.html
@@peteshobbies5383 that perfectly make sense. And I love your “Top 12 mimi” video. It’s 🥇🏆
Thanks Boyan, much appreciated 👍
Hi Pete
Kind of a continuation from your 10 best mini lineup.
Hi, Pete!
Is the W300 WB better than de DVIS in your opinion?
And on the other side of the coin my primer gun was $15 😎
And it works just fine.
I will check out the gun you mentioned as I am shopping for a low budget good quality gun for leather and vinyl repair and such
Thanks for the nice Review Pete, I always thought these DV1s have no drawbacks 😁 you've probably been asked this a bunch, but how do you make your living? Seems the painting is more than just a hobby
Hi Duje, I started an online retail business many years ago which did well so i now have time to pursue my hobbies, so, painting is just a hobby, i do things for friends and family and have a few people that do bikes up but only let them pay for paint although some have bought me sprayguns to say thanks, i really like tools so sprayguns are just an extension of that i guess, cheers buddy 👍
Good review, but it does advertise as a small gun/spot repair!!!!
Hi buddy, Indeed it does but so do nearly all the mini sprayguns, I'm finding this is a top class spraygun and probably the finest atomisation of any spraygun but it's more limited as an all rounder compared to many I have.
😍😍😍😍😍
