It's not just that his vocal range spans four octaves, it's that he can sing well while spanning them. I can make my voice deep, and high pitched, but to carry a tune and sing well while doing so... nope.
SuperForace he didn’t have six octaves, not even the great Freddie Mercury had a six range octave voice, Freddie had only a 5, so therefore Chris had a 4
At 1:39 vesper is a queen of hearts which signifies love but you can see her change to a queen of spades which is a woman who causes conflict and betrayal, pretty smart by the producers ngl
I think this is the most observant and smart youtube comment I've seen in a long time dude thx for letting us know that because thats like spot onto her character
I was surprised when i read a Rolling Stone article about Bond songs that this song counted as one of the worst. For my opinion "You know my name" is a powerful songs which describes the right character of James Bond in our days. Also i believe that the late Chris Cornel gave one of the best performances for a Bond song. Unforgetable.
We seem to forget the version played in the movie is edited from the original which was saddled with a bridge that was oddly out of place. There seems to be problem with all the Bond theme songs post John Barry where the writers and composer cannot just get to the fucking point.
I swear!! I hated it when people talked of adels skyfall without having reckonize the greatness of this song. It's this song that the ideal hero listens too before going to his death. One who goes agaisnt all odds and succeed thanks to all the quality's and competence a human can muster, even the favors of wind. one who outsmarts another that had every aspect of his plan in motion to win. Putting himself in the deadliest of danger beceause he cannot turn a blind eye to evil
I wasn't huge fan of Bond movies.. but this movie was spot on! Daniel Craig kills it as Bond, and the whole movie is awesome. This song is perfect intro too.
+supastar It actually dragged out a bit, towards the end. It was the first Bond movie to exceed 2 hours, and it certainly FELT long. I do like its Bond a lot, but the sometimes slow pacing keeps it from being more than a merely very good movie.
I know many people didn’t like this opening when it first came out, because many people didn’t associate rock music with James Bond. But I thought this was an excellent opening (and to me the best) as it set the tone for a new Bond (at the time) and a change of style. Cornell nailed the feeling of this song and I think it works perfectly for a Bond movie. I’m glad that it’s gotten more respect over the years. RIP Chris Cornell And we’ll miss you as Bond Daniel Craig.
It was perfect for the new era of bond; more grit, hard hitting, raw. It immediately smacks you round the face from the first note. Still my fav bond song, though my Soundgarden fandom probably adds bias!
I don't think i've seen anyone mention that the chorus of this song is supported by the same three-note chromatic progression that is the base of the James Bond theme. The original theme is in E minor, this song is in in B minor, but relatively, the progression is the same. In this song, the progression ends on the third note, while in the Bond theme, a fourth note redirects smoothly to the beginning of the progression. As if the song was an incomplete, unfinished version of the Bond theme - just like Bond himself in the film. This contributes in making "You Know My Name" the perfect seminal song for the character.
Cornell loved playing with music like that. His songs often were like a weird mix of prog rock and grunge with unusual time signatures and strange tunings. I feel like he and Soundgarden hit the scene just in time to not be appreciated anymore, ha ha.
@@AuspexAO Though part of it can also be credited to David Arnold. He has been scoring all of the Brosnan movies (expect Goldeneye) and he made fan remixes of Bond music before he was asked to compose for the movies for reals. He knows the Bond theme inside and out and could because of that find a way to play around with it. Now I'm not downplaying Cornell here (RIP). He and Arnold composed the song together and made the song what it is and I doubt he would want to be just another musician for hire. This is a Chris Cornell song, I just don't think he would left out David Arnold contributions to it
And Arnold's vision for the song was always for it to express a James Bond that hasn't fully become "James Bond." That's why "You Know My Name" is reprised in the score throughout, but the classic theme isn't heard until the very end.
The hosts of the podcast Switched on Pop just released an episode about Bond themes, and they noted that this ascending/descending chromatic movement appears in many of them, often somewhat obscured. It's worth a listen.
What a song Read the lyrics, understand that Chris understood everything about Bond and this movie Chris was the most amazing artist I’ve ever heard in my life RIP legend
Even after 15 years I love this song Chris Cornell, may you rest in peace You did a solid job making James Bond’s comeback I still hum this tune a lot Very catchy with the spy motifs and playing card visuals
A solid job? Mate, he absolutely nailed it. This is without a doubt the best bond theme ever and Craig is the best bond! Okay, maybe just my opinion but I think most agree!
From someone who has seen all the Bond movies since the very first, this one and its theme song raised the bar so high, we may never see anything better.
We certainly never saw it bettered, or even equalled, in the Craig era. That's a shame, to have his first outing in the role be his best one - but what a thoroughly entertaining movie this is. Casino Royale is not just the best of the Daniel Craig Bond flms - it's one of the best action adventures of that decade.
Quite possibly the best decisions ever made for Bond: Chris Cornell on theme and Daniel Craig as Bond - make it gritty, real and make Bond the sweating TNT he's supposed to be. Genius.
They had to make serious changes. The Bond brand was in jeopardy of becoming irrelevant. It was starting to come across as goofy in comparison to the Bourne and Mission Impossible series. It seems to have worked out fairly well.
Two reasons: #1 It's from British film and Oscars are awarded to American movies (except foreign film) #2 James Bond and such crude franchise DOES NOT DESERVE ARTISTIC OSCARS
@@vksasdgaming9472 maybe it’s because skyfall was amazing also to you saying the academy doesn’t award British films 1917 won multiple awards last year and that’s British.
In addition to, I will submit the opening credits video for the movie "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Atticus Ross' interpretation of the story is undeniably genius as well.
Skyfall was so boring that my mother started snoring in the cinema and I was pretty underwhelmed too... I loved the old bond flicks, but the new ones brought nothing new except for old Hollywood tropes at the expense of what made the old movies that great.
Fun fact, Chris Cornell found it extremely hard to work the words "Casino Royale" into a song, so he worked on the fact that despite being a secret agent, everyone knew who James Bond was, so he made his song about that, hence "You Know My Name" was born.
Actually, I think it's more like this is a song about M. I don't know if this is a confirmed fact or if I read is somewhere as possible theory, but look at the lyrics. It perfectly describes M and his/her relationship with Bond.
Probably the "deepest" lyrics ever written for a Bond movie theme. Quote from Wikipedia: Cornell thought it was a strange offer, considering that he is American, and imagined that he would perform a secondary song in the film instead of the main theme. Cornell declared he liked the Bond movies, particularly the ones with Sean Connery, but that he "wasn't really a big fan of the last several movies". But Daniel Craig's casting as James Bond intrigued the musician, and he decided to accept the job. Cornell then went to Prague to visit the film's shooting, and was much impressed with the film's emotional content after he was shown a rough cut of Casino Royale. In Prague he also met the score composer, David Arnold, who suggested writing a song "that echoed the film score". The composers started their writing separately, Cornell in his apartment in Paris, and Arnold in his house in London. Cornell stated that he had some difficulties with composing: "It is difficult, I think, to write lyrics for a character, so really I just kind of wandered around for about a month not thinking about it too much, until I sort of formulated some idea of a way that I could approach it, where I'm kind of relating to what's in the character in the movie. And because this particular Bond is very edgy, but also has a lot of emotional depth, it's a lot easier."Later the two musicians met and showed each other's ideas, and according to Arnold "it was almost like we wrote two parts of the same song."Cornell wrote lyrics, to which Arnold added some lines and later music. Some of Arnold's ideas included the song's title, the heavy introduction, and "having the same genetic material as the Bond theme, but in a different order and in a different shape".
Its beautiful to see how many people go straight to putting on an artists songs after hearing of their passing. It's a personal message from each person of 'Thank you for what you have given me and I will not forget you."
gerbodis Chris Cornell actually made this song 2007 and this movie came out 2006 so he was still alive when they did this he died 2017 they put this song in it before it was made into a music video
Mine too... I was a teenager when the movie and You Know My Name Bond theme song was out. Time flies so fast 😕 Rest easy to Chris and his closer friend Chester...
I went and googled for "best bond song" - this one came in at no 19 on one list, did not show up in the top 10 in another. I concluded that this world is full of immature pop music lovers after all. No question - this one is the best. By a distance.
ExcessHorsepower I was attached to him from the beginning. because it was like Cornell knew my name. Bond was a perfect match for him and Craig😩🚬🚬😩😱😵😢💊💊🌷🌷RIP
Me too. Of course the mission where you sneak into a casino is named after a Bond song lmao Still doesn't beat Lucretia My Reflection, just because I once saw SoM play that song live
Amazing song from an amazing movie. Casino Royale is a smart, well rounded action movie. I grew up watching Bond and while I like the gadetry and slight tongue in cheek feel of the older movies, Casino Royale goes far beyond the frame of the predecessors. It's a shame the follow up movies didn't manage to maintain the level.
@@rickygforce4217 isn't as good bro the villian silva is one of best villains in the bond series i personally think he's better than lechiffe because he was more twisted and wicked with his vendetta with MI6.
This is not only the greatest Bond theme ever written, but perhaps one of the greatest songs ever written for a film. A lot of the other themes are written either about the villain themselves (and some of these are awesome btw), or just anything. All they need is just to have the title of the movie in them. Not that there aren't other great ones, but this speaks to the character of James Bond himself.
@@Theruler091I like to imagine it's a conversation between them. Like in the chorus, M says, "You can't deny the prize: it may never fulfill you, it longs to kill you, are you willing to die?" Then Bond responds with, "The coldest blood runs through my veins, you know my name."
The world will definitely miss you. You were one of the greatest rock vocalist of all time and a huge part of my childhood. The world is definitely bummed, you left us too soon. CHRIS CORNELL: 1964 - 2017 #restinpeacechriscornell
Best Bond theme and Intro combo of all of them. Its not even close really. What a tone setter for the Craig Era. Masterful work here from all parties involved.
Michael Welsh Possibly Gary Numan's '90s albums "Exile" and "Pure" qualify? The songs are electronic in nature, but multi-layered in arrangement, much like orchesteral music.

I'm a massive Roger Moore fan but I'll easily concede that Casino Royale is the best if not one of the very best Bonds. Absolute kick ass theme song and the gunbarrel intro in the toilets just blew me away
@@danlugo4365 My top list (for now) 1. Goldfinger 2. Goldeneye 3. Casino Royale (Casino was Craig's only great Bond film IMO, and I think Skyfall is way overrated). 4. License to Kill (Timothy Dalton wasn't bad as a Bond, and this movie is one of the best in the franchise. It expands on Majesty's Secret service and Felix Lighter's friendship. 5. On her Majesty's Secret Service 6. The Spy Who Loved Me or maybe Octopussy? (Roger Moore was my least favorite Bond below Craig, would love to hear from a Roger Moore fan what their favorite Bond film of his is, but Casino blows all of Moore's films out of the water imo) 7. Never Say Never Again: I don't really care what the Bond community says I like this one better than Thunderball. Thunderball is so boring despite being shorter in length than NSNA. Better editing and some of the most fun sequences in the filmography. I could easily flip on this one for From Russia with Love though.
Always get goosebumps when the first notes hit! It’s the total package that this song gives me: The story of the movie, Chris Cornell’s voice (RIP precious) and the lyrics. So well composed and the best introduction to Daniel Craig as Bond ❤️✨👌🏽
Massively underrated Bond song. The voice, the fast-paced song, the video. All encapsulates Bond to the audience. No idea why it wasn't more popular. Superb.
It's a beautiful thing to come back to this song and this movie. I remember when it first came out and I was 17 years old, and completely dazzled by the raw emotion of both. RIP Chris Cornell you made a song that was a perfect match for the most authentic and humanizing version of James Bond that I've ever seen.
The way he delivers the tone of Craig as a Bond, the way he captures the theme and essence of the whole film I still hold this one as my personal favourite out of all the Bond themes, and not just because Cornell did it (which means a lot to me, huge fan and he was an incredible musician and performer) But because he just made it work perfectly. Along with the animated introduction this just gets your heart racing! What a way to begin your Bond franchise like damn!
I'm not hugely familiar with Cornell's work, but there is absolutely no denying that he - like Craig - knocked this one out of the fekking park. One of the few film themes that you can actually listen to for pleasure, and yet lyrically so well tied-in to the film it's for. A brilliant song by any measure.
I don’t understand why they have to keep pushing out the slow and sad theme songs for this franchise. Give me a good ol rock ballad like this one and get me hyped for what I’m going to see. Hell! Include a boss theme song on the pre-credit action sequence. They’re making him way too melancholic with these
Well my guess is that it goes with the recent story line that time and what not is catching up to bond. Therefore it’s more sad and reflective than high impact and high energy
I always took the reveal of Bonds face at 2:55, while the song repeats “you know my name” as a giant “fuck you” to the people who hated the casting of Daniel Craig.
@@josequintero7250 that's because his physical appearences was the opposite of what James Bond should look. James Bond is a tall guy (around 180 cm) with black hair and blue eyes, whereas Daniel is a blonde and height only 177/178 cm. Some people also thought that he looks too "cold", robotic-face and "villain-ly". There was no James Bond charisma at all. I know many people didn’t like this opening when it first came out, because many people didn’t associate rock music with James Bond. But I thought this was an excellent opening (and to me the best) as it set the tone for a new Bond (at the time) and a change of style.

@satriadicky3732 😂😂😂
Damn, that's actually insane.

Manliest song ever, what a masterpiece.
Probably the "deepest" lyrics ever written for a Bond movie theme.
Quote from Wikipedia:
Cornell thought it was a strange offer, considering that he is American, and imagined that he would perform a secondary song in the film instead of the main theme.

Casino Royale and Skyfall were amazing, here's to Spectre with Casino Royale's "You Know My Name"
The Top Comment King anything but Quantum right?
naxo I just watched Quantum again for the first time since theaters and it's a great film, it's just disappointing coming off of the masterpiece of Casino Royale
+Daniel McCarthy It had production troubles because of the writers strike. I think it turned out reasonably well considering the issues it faced.
+naxo the Madonna one on Die Another Day was the worst
+omyyer As far as I'm concerned, that film never existed.
We know your name Chris and we will never forget it 🥲
This to me is the best James Bond theme, I really like this song.
Well of course, it's only natural that the best Bond movie would have the best theme.
I say that, but I can never decide whether I prefer this movie or GoldenEye. Both awesome films with awesome themes.
+Althalus2010 This is a Realistic Film GoldenEye was good but it wasn't as Grabbing it was a film that made you want to turn your Brain off
bond uses defibrillator to defibrillate himself.... realism? lol you are so dumb
Well he doesn't actually mange too does he. He was saved by the girl. So in that sense it was ok.
