So glad this is becoming a respected trend, I’ve always felt guilty or hid the fact I automate and optimise my day down to 4-5 hours of work. I get just as much done as everyone else, just with ruthless efficiency so I can maximise my paid free time. It’s been successful enough that I’ve been able to get a second job in the afternoons, which means more money per hour as I’m being paid by both at the same time. Hope this continues to be a marker of a good worker!

The procrastination is because one is deriving a sense of self from the work. It is just simply work. But sadly there are expectations attached to it and fears and anxieties because we are expectimg something out of that work. Stop deriving satisfaction, pleasure, and results from the work and the work will simply be done for the purposes of doing the work.

So true. I just started listing the next steps of a project instead of the whole project itself on my next day’s list. If I don’t know how to solve a problem, I wrote “come up with 10 ideas for…”

I have heard similar advice concerning writing. I am attempting to write a book, and the same advice applies to that. It's good to double down on this principle for whatever task you are trying to accomplish!

I'd like to hear a discussion about working the bare minimum to "get by" in your job versus "working ahead" and like "working yourself out of a job". I work in finance and there are usually two types of people, those who get the work done with bare minimum requirements - submitted on time, accurate - and those who are more entrepreneurial and are going above and beyond like setting up meetings during down time, researching and re-working their current tasks to make them better, etc. It seems like people can "get by" with doing the minimum amount of work required because at the end of the day that is all that's really expected of you. I struggle with this sometimes because its way less work and less stress to just do the work and then enjoy down time. But some people are way more engaged and those are the people who are getting more promotions and "leading their own path" in the corporate world. It kind of boils down to job vs. career in my eyes.

Stop comparing yourself with others... You will make yourself miserable. Live your own life.

    • @JTD33
      @JTD33 2 года назад +1

Yeah I think it's all up to what you want from your career, and whether you enjoy it. Nothing wrong with either choice and each have their pros and cons. But worth keeping in mind that it's not either or, there are levels between those extremes and it can also change over time as well as go back and forth based on the period of one's life.

This depends very much on the work opportunities available to you. The quiet quitting movement is more about not going above and beyond when there is no meaningful reward for doing so. If your extra effort genuinely leads to rewards, financial or upwards mobility or ideally both, and you value those things, great - but a lot of employers have no ability or intention to reward extra effort, in which case we need to stop giving them free labour.

Maybe at the end of this work you say something like "I can now go enjoy myself".... This might actually be making the work painful as you've/weve decided one thing is pleasurable and the other is painful.
One of our many problems is that we bring judgement into things when they may just be neutral. My 5 Yr old would happily do your corporate contract drafting for you....because she couldnt give a shit about your partner in the matter nor the client... But for you the lawyer or worker there are many intersts woven into the work and so there is fear, procrastination and anxiety. It is our judgments which are the problem. If we didn't give a fuck and did the the thing purely for itself we might be OK.

    Thoughts while watching:
    - To me, there is a difference between a brain and behaviour which I think is overlooked here.
    - You mention studies about working time which seem somewhat redundant with your follow-up point about flow and personal preference (also the studies weren't referenced which would have been nice).
    - I feel bad for chimps, being associated with distraction and poor focus 😆
    - Planning stopping procrastination seems a little vague. Procrastination to me isn't not knowing where to start 🤷‍♂
    - As a sports science researcher I feel the marathon example doesn't match the point you were making. Are you trying to say not to work hard?
Thanks for the video, these were just my honest thoughts while watching 😁

  • @channiedhillon

Oh god.. Productivity... Productivity.... Productivity... It is that that is making the brain dull... Seeking satisfaction from everything is making the brain dull... Productivity is repetition... Repetition is death.. Dullness of the brain.

52 minutes… it’s an average! It’s meaningless as people varied from 30 mins to over an hour. It doesn’t tell you anything about what to do at an individual level. Its so frustrating how statistics are mistepresented.

  • @channiedhillon

Hmm... You really might be setting the bar here... Many lawyers might be watching this... They too will be thinking the same way as you. You being conditioned in a certain way are now conditioning them... Hmmmm
