I swear Texas holds their musicians at another standard in Allstate. Being a resident of Georgia and highschool student our isn't as hard as that.

@@alexshen9639 I can assure you pistons are clunkier than keys. I have a piston valve at home and keys at school. The school tuba plays with much more agility because of the smaller travel in the keys. They also don’t get sticky as often or as much as pistons do.

i’m a junior now, and this was my freshman years etudes. this was so hard 🤣 i for real thought this was the standard for highschool all region but i’ve never gotten etudes harder than this one yet. i’m still surprised how i made it

Tuba is the most important instrument of all. Without it is like a rap without a beat
If you removed the tuba it could be replaced by the cimbasso, or a contrabass trombone

@@LowBrassU i was trying to find this etude but i couldn't. 30 just the triplets and 15 turns. But its mostly me with the higher notes. Is there any advice you can give me for reaching higher notes with out pinching or squeezing the tone. If you can thank you

The Music Kid from one tuba player to another, that was something I really struggled with and even to this day I sometimes really struggle with it sometimes. The key for me was buzzing in the high range and adjusting my mouth until I found a nice big open sound in the high range. Now I’m not perfect yet because I’m just still a sophomore and have a lot to work on but hopefully this helps you
@@JGamer200420 I think we struggle at times to make our best sound in the upper register. One of my teachers always talked about it as extending the middle register which has always helped me!

I remember playing these in high school I've looked at the most recent etudes and they seem way easier than when I was in high school like this etude, which I think they should be getting more challenging

Today was a fun day!
Texas: play it at 2x the speed
Tuba players: play it 0.75 the speed
It took me a good amount of practicing to get this in the tempo range they gave.
Great playing, but how many high-schoolers have access to an F Tuba? Most will audition on Bb.
I thought the choice to play it on F was a bit weird, but hey, at least they have a sound sample to compare to.
Its a pretty good etude but I've never understood why they make etudes where the 8th note is the beat in a 4/4 2/4 etc. time signature, it's not any harder to play just a novelty obstacle put there because it is possible

Hi sir, can you give me some advise, Im just got an f tuba, but still i have problem to play the high register from Eb above the staff, can you help to suggest any practice that can help me to improve on the high register. And also my low register is a bit shaky, I still not get the comfortable centre point for f tuba low register, before this i play C tuba
I practice scales, arpeggios and simple melodies to work on my high range. Increasing your high range is a journey and requires consistent practice. As far as low range specifically on F tuba, try to stay as relaxed as possible in the low range. F tubas can also sometimes be picky with what fingerings work best. For example low B on some F tubas work just fine as 2&4 but others almost require 523. With a standard five valve tuba you have 32 unique fingerings and I would experiment with them in the low range. As far as exercises, my daily routine consists of playing low scales descending starting on F.

Is there a reason you chose to record this on f? It seems to me the majority of students learning this would relate more to contrabass. And considering the audition is for ensemble work hearing the proper contra tone would be helpful.

How many high school tuba players will have an f tuba available to play this etude?
Probably not too many, but it is playable on all keys of tuba. I chose to play this on F because I had already worked on it on F tuba.
Would playing it on the 4-valve Concert BBb tuba make it easier or harder than compare to the F tuba?
@@alfredomeza3155 I don't really think about the keys of tuba in this way. There can be different challenges on different keyed tubas but the main difference between the tubas is really the sound.
@@LowBrassU It's not the key; it's the range. That etude is often toward the upper range for a high school player and is definitely easier on an F for that reason than a Bb. An F is smaller and generally more nimble than a Bb or a C. I'm not saying it can't be done well on a bigger horn; it's just a bit more difficult to achieve the same level of clarity one can get with an F. You can sprint in boots, but it'll be easier in spikes.
Don't try it on a c tuba. I heard it's hell, and seen thats it's hell

The tuba etudes are already up. I just recorded tenor trombone so it could be up today or tomorrow. The other two will be after that.

What Type Of Rotary Valves Are Those?
These are clock springs which are an old style. They are definitely interesting but generally inferior to modern rotor valve mechanisms. I bought this horn ten years ago with the intention of changing the mechanism to a modern setup but haven’t.

Is this significantly easier to play on the F Tuba rather than a CC? One of my problems is highting those high notes with my CC tuba.
If you are having trouble with the high range on CC, most likely an F tuba won't solve all of your problems. This etude is definitely playable on all keys of tubas. I chose to play this on F but could have also recorded the etude on CC tuba.
