@@kevinonyedikachukwu564 Whoever "bids" the least time gets to play black. Although you play with less time as black, a draw will equal a win to tie break. Hikaru might have thought that Magnus would likely bid to play as black with 9 minutes in the clock, so he bid 8:59.
Magnus however, bid 8:58, thus beating Hikaru for black; forcing Hikaru to try to play white for a win.
EDIT: You should not bid 1 second, because then you would have to play as Black with ONE SECOND on the CLOCK.

@@kevinonyedikachukwu564 Magnus wanted black pieces in their final.match to win the tournament. You bid a time to play with against your opponent to get black, and the lowest bidder wins black pieces. Magnus predicted Hikaru would estimate his bid to 9 minutes, therefore he predicted Hilary would bid 1 second less to get the black pieces. Magnus therefor bid 2 seconds lower than 9 min, because he wanted black pieces, therefore predicting hikarus prediction and, and ended up with black pieces.

@@kevinonyedikachukwu564 in the tie breaker you bid for black, and whoever bids the lowest time gets the black pieces and the time they bid. The reason you want black is because white HAS to win, black wins with a draw or win, because they have lower time and the black pieces.

When I say I embarrassingly laughed out loud at 16:50 at Levy's delivery there... My wife gave me a look across the couch 😂😂just as brilliant as Magnus' bid.

The white player or we can say both players should start with the time they have bid. For example the higher bidder would also get 8:59 in this case Hikaru. It would completely change the bidding dynamics. As both player would not try to bid for lower time as if they loose the bid the winner would get heavy advantage.
