Paul Reed Smith may hate pedals, but his first foray into the realm delivers nothing but gems.
Inside each box containing a brand new PRS pedal, there’s a little fold-out card with a picture of Paul Reed Smith and a simple caption: “I hate pedals.” It’s not hard to imagine Smith’s indifference to stompboxes. PRS guitars are immaculately executed, ultra-playable instruments that reflect a focus on elemental interactions between fingers, strings, and fretboard. Indeed, for much of Paul Reed Smith’s career, stompboxes were probably held in the same regard as a broken toaster-a needless impediment to the communication of unadulterated tone.
Certainly, there is a visceral thrill to playing a guitar without effects-particularly one as nice as the average PRS. But while that’s true, stompboxes are, to many musicians, equally artful and thrilling vehicles of expression. And more than a few pedals have done their magic with a PRS guitar at the other end of a cable.
PRS’ three debut pedals-an optical compressor, overdrive, and dual flanger-do not feel like willy-nilly concessions to market pressures. In fact, in keeping with PRS tradition and ethos, these pedals seem selected and designed to offer minimal intrusion on the guitar/amp relationship if the player chooses that route. But they also have the bandwidth to be bold and even positively extroverted. Unsurprisingly, they are also built to a very high standard of quality and reflect an intense attention to detail.

Nice Cheap Trick "Downed" snippet at 17:12!!
Hi John, love your videos. In this video I could not believe my ears when you played/picked notes/chord pattern; which is the verse of one of my original songs when you were demoing the overdrive. 😀
Fantastic playing John!
John is the perfect person to be doing demo's of everything guitar! Awesome guitar too! Don't know if you've reviewed it or not... if not, please do! Great job John! PRS pedals sound incredible!
How cool is that single cut hollow body!!! great playing, John!!
Great run-through, John!
Your a killer guitarist John. I dig the compressor the most out of all of them.
That's a sick PRS you got there John.
Beautiful guitar, great tones! You're the man, John.
Your hearing with your eyes.
I do like the Mary Cries pedal and Horsemeat. Great guitar also.
nice room, perfect to create music, its really inspiring , john is the man 🍻
AWSOME John, some folks think JB is for Jeff Beck or Joe Bonnamassa or even Jimmy Bage (sorry) but we all know better. JohnBollinger is IT!
that comp sounds great
Well, you can't go very wrong with an optical compressor but Paul has got this one really great - the gain reduction range is just right, so that you can't actually go to the squashing and/or pumping area! And the dual flanger is also amazing at any of its settings, especially when run properly which is before any kind of overdrive or distortion! The sound is airy but smooth, and NOT like the thin and really ugly sound of the '80s poodle-hair guys which no one wants to hear any more - they all used modulation effects after the drive devices and that's obviously far from right ;-) Then we go the Horsemeat overdrive which sounds exactly like Paul RS promises - natural no matter how aggressive you set it! So, my best compliments to Paul for his work and dedication to guitar, and to my friend John for his mastery and knowledge allowing him to explain and demonstrate any piece of guitar oriented device!
Great tones overall. Forget the naming.. what, I think, should have been reconsidered is the placement of the flanger "mix" knob. To put a rotary knob where a footswitch would typically go, well that breakage is only a matter of time for anyone that gigs, jams, steps..
Dude, I want these pedals! How many watts are they? Are they legal in most countries? Asking for a friend
Love the guitar.
Nice vibe
11:49 stank face of approval
yikes is that a private stock?
Cool guitar, John.
That compressor reminds me of the one in the old Lab Series amps. I have a L-5 that I used till it finally died. Hoping to have it fixed at some point
I like the flanger ! Sounds dreamy. Real shoegaze stuff.
John is a stupid good player.
Where is JOHN’S signature guitar
What stand are you using I need that!
Which amp are you pushing these through? Just bought my first PRS and liking the pedals!!
He says in the beginning it is a Fender Pro.
@@Nightwinflyer thanks, missed that and good pick 😎
How are they built? Component leads soldered to an eyelet PCB or surface mounted components? At these prices I'd expect hand soldering/wiring of quality components.
I heard on the cheap.
Thru-hole traditional circuit design, not surface mount..
Ya sure Hank done it this way....
The question is, Do you want to spend $350 on a flanger pedal??
Yeah
Nope!
It really seems like it’s the flanger to kill all flangers though, so maybe? You can get flange, vibrato, chorus, and even phasey sounds
@@joshsinclair1796 yeah that's the thing. Each of these pedals is not just the thing they are named after. It's a flanger+
Compressor+
Overdrive+
Nope
Graphics looks just like Neunaber?
I get it now. A Klon is part horse.... horse meat... son of a gun
Just get a Sharpie, black over the 'r-s-e' and the a- t, Now you've got HO-ME ,like 'im your homey, don't cha know me'!?👍
Much better.🎼
Union Tube and Transistor already did this compressor with the LAB. And they did it better.
Someone once thought it was a good idea for McDonald’s to sell pizza.
Horsemeat, OMG!! 🐴☠
WHINNEEEYYYY!
Intelligent, insightful and Informative... I think my girlfriend has fall-en IN LOVE WITH YOU... She is ear in Devon England... Hands Off... ha ha.... VERY TALENTED young man...ha ha Take Care Mate!? X p.s... ALDO NOVA IS/WAS ...one of my hero's and I saw him Live supporting Blue Öyster Cult at the Birmingham Odean England...circa 83' 84' Small venue and SOOO INTENSE!!! TAKE CARE X
Horse meat? Horse meat??! I understand, it’s based on a Klon. But Horse meat? You couldn’t have thought of ANYTHING else, PRS? Just f’ing why?!
That Horsemeat is about as transparent as my ex-girlfriend
Nah
“Horsemeat”. Seriously? 😬
CHOP CHOP SPOCKY! IDIC REMEMBER!
Horrible physical design. The knobs are WAY too close to the footswitch. Were they aware in their design brief that these are called STOMPboxes for a reason?
yeah, these sound good/average, and look awkward in design.
I own one and disgree
Doesn't sound that good to my ears. Too composed and undefined fundamental note... Oh, wait, that's the sound of the guitar he is playing...
LOL!
Horsemeat? Wtf? I don't care what it sounds like. I'm not having Horsemeat on my board.
Just get a Sharpie, and Blackout some letters so it says, HO-ME , Its your hommey don't cha know me?! Much better! Imo🎼👍
The name of these pedals prevents me from any consideration of their sound sculpting.
