One of the greatest guitar solos ever. Still gives me goosebumps almost 50 years after it came out. So glad I grew up when music like this was being made. Nothing today can compare.
Saw this tour live in Indy in the mid 90s. Was freaking awe-inspiring. The whole audience was transfixed and mesmerized by the solo at the end and the morphing disco ball. I caught myself with my jaw hanging open and looked around. LOL, everyone else was standing around slack-jawed too! Was the same back when I saw them for the first time in the mid 80s. Only that time it was more of a laser light display that had everyone once again slack-jawed. When they went into the chorus, "A distant ship smoke on the horizon, your are only coming through in waves..." they played the lasers above the audience in a pattern that looked like you were viewing waves on the ocean from underneath. It was totally badass! Such great memories!!!
I've seen this tour, and this song played live several times, and the solos I saw were all fantastic, yet still they weren't as incredible as this one is.

@@innosanto Roger may have been the mastermind in a philosophical / lyrical way of Pink Floyd, but without David and his musical genius the band would never have become this expressive and popular. All line-ups featuring Roger Waters never had that charism of David's late configuration. No wonder: Richard Wright, Nick Mason, Tim Renwick, Jon Carin and some other former musicians of Pink Floyd stood with Gilmour.
@@innosanto the wall is what I used to have at the top of the list of concerts..but what they did with this concert..pulse concert..blows everything else away..not even fvcking close..and I haven't seen anything else from any other singer,, group,, that is in the same universe..with the performance..they put on here..and I'm completely aw struck,, cause it was much more than, just performance..it was..EPIC.. Watching the video of that concert, I can feel what they mean. At least I have played in a Pink Floyd tribute band for about 10 years and it was the best time of my live so far. Shine on!

Pink Floyd saved my life when I was a young man...their music soothed my anger in a way that nothing else could...I am profoundly grateful for this music and what it did for a troubled young man as myself.

I was there as well but not this exact show. When that disco ball opened up my head exploded.
I was at this concert. You didn’t just listen to Pink Floyd, you felt it throughout your body, especially your mind and finally you watched it with the fantastic light show. Having been to concerts since the 1970s, This concert with Pink Floyd had arguably one of the best sound systems. I’ve heard other bands in this venue and the some of them their sound systems sucked, reverbing echoes so much you couldn’t make out any words. This was their encore song, the final song. When everyone walked out to go home hardly anyone spoke, they just witnessed a concert of a lifetime; an experience we collectively all tried to process as we left. We were all speechless.
It was crazy loud and at the same time CRAZY crystal clear. To me (with my mind somewhat influenced by shrooms) at times it felt like a warm blanket. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I was not the same man walking out of there in dumbfounded silence after the concert as the one who went through the gates that afternoon.
I was at this concert too but the last song was 'Run Like Hell'. Your reaction is spot on though, concert of a lifetime.
It was actually their 2nd encore of three. The full encore was Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell. I was there for three nights - and again at Maine Road. And I still missed things!

I was at this exact concert and its still the best concert i have ever seen. Witnessing Gilmour's solo was almost spiritual. An amazing night.

David Gilmour is a guitar god! He belongs on the guitar Mount Rushmore along with SRV, Jimi, Eddie Van Halen! He’s nearly 80 and can still kill it!
.Fun Fact---- According to Waters, Barrett(original singer, who was dealing with serious mental issues) came into what would be their last rehearsal session together with a new song. He was calling it, "Have You Got It Yet?," and the first couple times they ran through it, it seemed simple enough. Soon the band realized that the song wasn't simple at all - Barrett would change the melody and the arrangement constantly with each new practice run - slightly at first, but more and more each time they played it. Barrett would play it again for them, with the capricious structure changes, and each time he would ask, "Have you got it yet?" Of course, the band never did quite get it, as they were chasing the proverbial carrot on the string. Eventually they realized that they had become victims of Barrett's eccentric sense of humor. In fact Waters stated, in an interview for The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story, that upon realizing Barrett was deliberately making the tune impossible to learn, he put down his bass guitar, left the room, and never attempted to play with Barrett again. Waters had called it "a real act of mad genius".

Here’s another interesting and heartwarming thing about Pink Floyd: for obvious reasons, they had to kick Syd Barrett out of the band, his drug use and mental problems had become too much of an issue for them to carry on with him, so they parted ways. However after every album and every tour they did without him, they would always send Barrett a percentage of the money they would make off of the record sales/tours or whatever. Even though Syd wasn’t physically a part of the group anymore, they still cared about him and considered him a member of the band, so they wrote him a check anytime the band made any kind of revenue. I don’t know too many other musical artists who would do something like that.
@@johnselwitz5362 They even kept his personal life private. They were very fond of the guy, even David, the guy who was picked to replace him was too as Syd attended David's marriage and left shortly after

Cool reaction, can't believe someone in the comments suggested the solo was overrated . The best solos are not all about shredding ,speed etc , this solo is filled with emotion , every note is chosen perfectly.
Hope you react to more of the pulse concert , it's one of the best live concerts ever recorded in my opinion.

That person needs to look up what Dave Mustaine has to say about Gilmour - ""I'm of the belief that a player like David Gilmour could do more with one note than some of today's shredders can do with a dozen".
They sort of have a point (probably not the one intended) as this particular solo is edited together from 2 performances because David made a cock-up .
If you've seen the movie this solo musically describes the character's descent into madness as to the guitar gradually ascends higher and higher.Gilmour is so talented he can put emotion into guitar notes,most just play guitar,he becomes the guitar.

I was there.. Earls Court London 1994. I remember at one point feeling like I was going to weep and leaving completely speechless.
I am so utterly lucky to have seen them in the old Foxboro Stadium in 1994, they were incredible that night and the version of Comfortably Number heard there rivaled the one you just reacted to. Pink Floyd was an experience like no other musically, we tripped to them in Boston in 1975 & 1977, I got to see Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals in their entirety. You should react to every thing on those Albums, they are beyond classic. They encored with Echoes in 75, we thought the building was in alternate universe for awhile. They were the best I ever saw and I envy you two having a fresh start on reviewing their amazing catalog. Enjoy! 🎸

Actually Prince is the most understated Guitar genius of our generation. David Gilmour is by all account a brilliant player, but for me the understated champion goes to Prince just my humble opinion. :) stay safe and Healthy.

Prince played exceptionally, but flamboyantly; my use of understated refers to delivering great guitar solos with quiet dignity. That’s Gilmour, not Page, Hendrix, or Prince…all wonderful , by the way…as is Bonamassa, etc, but David does it calmly.

This Pulse concert version of this song: BEST GUITAR 🎸 SOLO EVER!!! Never get tired of it. Never stop getting chills and close to tears every single time. Pink Floyd quite possibly the most phenomenal band ever to make music. Dave Gilmour’s vocals are near perfect in this LIVE performance! He might be my all time favorite guitarist because he puts so much emotion into his writing, his melodies, his playing. Even though I wasn’t even born yet when Pink Floyd formed their band, I started listening to them as a young teenager and, decades later, still listen to them all the time. 🙌🏼🌈🤘🏼I’m so happy for you guys to be discovering how amazing they are.
Comfortably numb was written by Roger waters as a real life experience when he was not feeling well. This was his story of that experience

I have seen quite a few reactions to this and it is not at all unusual to see people have a strong emotional reaction to the wondrous guitar solo.
This classic has got to be one of their best loved songs.
The song is about Roger Waters, who was ill and needed some pain medication so he could go onstage to perform. So many great classic bands/artists from back in the day; Pink Floyd is definitely at the top of the list (along with the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and others). Don't get me started on the best guitarists, lol. David Gilmour (lead guitarist and vocalist) is not just an amazing musician but an amazing human being. He auctioned off all his guitars; got $21.5 million, and gave it all to charity. You guys need to see them very young in "Pink Floyd live at Pompeii, 1971-72" , another amazing performance.
In addition to Waters' performance ills, Gilmore added the childhood experience of having a bad case of a flu or some kind of viral infection and the delirium that he experienced during that time, but was now fleeting in his memory.
My understanding is that it was Gilmore, not Rogers, who needed the pain meds. As A G correctly states, he compares it to being sick as a child. He is not celebrating drug use in the song.
I actually remember the first time I heard only two albums: Dark Side of the Moon and Beatles White. I never get sick of seeing and hearing Pink Floyd. I'm near-obsessed!

One of the greatest solos ever played. David Gilmour is a genius on the guitar. Where are you ever going to hear such a heartfelt, melodic solo as that. I don't think you will find one any better. Different maybe, but not better !!
He can still play like that; I was fortunate enough to see David Gilmour's solo tour in 2016. He performed this song and many other Pink Floyd classics, along with his solo work. If you ever want to see a more recent performance of his, I suggest 'David Gilmour, Live in Pompeii, Comfortably Numb, 2016' or from the same show, 'In Any Tongue.' As for the Pulse 1994 concert, I suggest checking out 'Sorrow' next; it's got another amazing guitar solo.

I have watched this on DVD and YT now a hundred times and it never fails to stir my emotions. When you watch the whole Pulse concert the feeling is magnified! They play the songs from Dark Side of the Moon on the DVD and this song is the first encore. Thanks for a great reaction!

Before I even watch this... everybody in the live was pimping this when you did Comfortably Numb studio version. This is the greatest guitar solo of all time and this particular live version is the best I've ever heard David Gilmour play. @@itsbrodie i see you fam. I know the Pompeii solo has that black on black strat that he used after he sold the red one and donated his proceeds to global warming. Equally as excellent. A lot of guys lose their dexterity as they age. Not david gilmour. He just gets better. But you are one hundred percent right that version live in Pompeii is spectacular. I've said it a thousand times, picking the best guitar player ever is all subjective, but I will say without question he is the most humbling guitar player I've ever heard. No guitar player ever and say that David Gilmour hasn't at one time or another put them in their place

I believe the song is based on two incidences in Roger Waters life, firstly when he was ill as a child and secondly when he was ill before a show and had to have a shot to enable him to perfom

You all did a great reaction to this. I was fortunate to see Pink Floyd live on this Pulse tour in 1994 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. There were 47,000 fans at the show, and I had 18th row seats on the floor. In the first half of the show they played their album Dark Side of the Moon from start to finish, and in the second half they played many songs from their recently released album The Division Bell and other popular songs. "Comfortably Numb" was their last song of the second half, and then their encore was "Run Like Hell". You should definitely see the light show for that from this Pulse tour. It was an experience of a lifetime. Also saw them in 1987 on the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in Austin. Again, great reaction and cool to see your appreciation for this!!!

First time I heard this was in a sneak preview in the middle of the night in 1979. One of my favorite albums of all time. David Gilmour evokes emotional reaction with his guitar solos. I'm happy to see you enjoy it so much.

I've probably seen all the versions of this song from different concerts (by the way, the performance from Live At Pompeii 2016 is also great), but this is an absolute gem!

All of the Pink Floyd songs from the Pulse Concert are excellent. Two of my other Pulse favorites are SORROW and RUN LIKE HELL.

Founding member roger Waters wrote this song in reference to when he was a child and he had a fever of 105 from a flu or diphtheria and would hallucinate. He was seriously I'll. Later in life he had those same feelings.
The song was co-written by Waters and Gilmour...the original demo, titled "The Doctor" - was one that Gilmour brought in.

Your brain has been fired from the cannon of geniuses. Pink Floyd are undoubtedly one of the greatest bands.
Their music is layered with sounds that capture your brain waves and reprogram your ears and make you appreciate the sound they create.
I describe Pink Floyd as psychedelic blues.

Their gigs takes your soul, shakes it up like a snow globe, the you wait for days for it to settle into its new position.

That solo.. is incredible.!! David Gilmour is the true definition of chill.. he played the guitar relaxed.. played it in slow form to let everyone know it doesn’t have to be fast to get your attention.. it’s the NOTE.!! Gilmour is a beast.!!
Asia and BJ, Y'all should do the whole Pink Floyd Pulse concert. If you don't and you die before you do... I'm pretty sure Saint Peter will press the button that opens the trap door at the entrance to the Pearly Gates where you slide down a chute and end up in Beelzebub's office.
