Some people hike 30s every day, so this doesn't apply to them. But if 30 (or 20, or 15) is an abnormally long day for you, I would add to Owen's excellent list: be rested. Get good rest the night before your long day, and get good rest after. You may not be able to recover enough to do long days every day, but you can alternate longer and shorter days to keep your overall mileage higher.

Most I hiked in a day was R2R2R in the Grand Canyon. First time it took me 23 hr, 2nd was 20. I don’t necessarily treat them differently, I naturally don’t take breaks outside of those for a specific purpose (water, bio, foot care.. always stop early at any signs of hotspot or chafing and deal with it). Staying motivated on pace, when you find yourself dragging, remind yourself to pick it up a bit.
The base built from bigger hikes has now motivated me to try ultrarunning (I’m 52, not exactly the time to be picking that up). That has really showed me how to become even more efficient. My walking pace has gotten faster, hills become way more trivial. You become expert on fueling on the go when your body doesn’t want food. I look forward to trying r2r2r again in the near future.

I've done a lot of 30 mile days on thruhikes. Never started before sunrise, never hiked after sunset. Agree that time management is important but also as said in the video that there are lots of hours in the day. My best advice for anyone wanting to do 30 mile days is to start with shorter days and build up - you'll know when you're ready and it won't be that hard on easy a trail.

This is great advice! Thanks for sharing and I think there is nothing wrong with listening to music when you are hiking all day, nature sounds are great but it help to give yourself a boost with some music here and there.

For me it comes down to this:
    ✔️Know your own speed
    ✔️Start before sunrise
✔️Drink some water every 15-20 minutes
✔️Eat 100 calories an hour, and keep snacks handy
✔️Be efficient with breaks, like where you stop to filter more water

I've done quite a few 30 mile days because I ran out of tobacco. Hopefully on my next hike I am not smoking anymore and then maybe I can do more 30 mile days because I will be taking less breaks.

I break 30+ mile days down to three principles: long days, sustainable pace, maximize while minimizing breaks. I think they have a lot of overlap with what Owen presented. My presentation was a lot rougher: ruclips.net/video/B3rabwSQVjA/видео.htmlsi=0sxH3RBClV571XDU&t=140

Thirty miles divided by 2 mph equals 15 hours with no stops. Sorry I don't buy it.

Sometimes one makes more than two miles in an hour.

The number of trust fund babies out there makes hiking less enjoyable on the more popular trails.
