I think Keaton’s choice to allow herself to scream was a really intelligent move. With these big notes I think we can feel pressure to sing them beautifully rather than authentically. A music director told me once that something “didn’t need to sound pretty” because I wasn’t pushing the piece emotionally. The screams are so well executed and bone chilling.

I think the lowered version sounds fantastic, the original is a very grand, Carrie completely losing her mind. This version is almost creepy, it’s like she’s slowly preparing everyone for what’s about to happen.
I gotta agree that Keaton is great. She has so much character, and her speeding up, shrieking just fits the character, scene, and song. This song isn't supposed to be sung beautifully. it's a piece of pure anger I also loved Danielle, Evelyn and Najah.
Keaton is the example of how a musical performance isn't about belting and doing perfect notes, but to let emotions express through it. Her screams were chilling.
FINALLY! SOMEONE ELSE WHO APPRECIATES THE ARTWORK THAT IS CARRIE THE MUSICAL Also, Molly, Keaton and Rose are my favorites. Keaton and Molly are terrific actresses, but DANG. Rose’s voice gave me chills! Such a beautiful voice!
I love the musical, too, but it gets a lot of hate because when it premiered in 1988, a lot of the songs were different and it flopped quickly. But now that it's coming back in revivals with different songs, it's getting popular again.
Because the creative team in 1988 didn't go with an American Company and decided yet again to let the British produce american story's they really new nothing about, and turned it into a big farce and didn't play it straight either from the book or the film. He saw it as a greek tradity and not a show about religion and about high school and how much girls would have killed other girls to get to go to the prom. The UK from my understanding didn't have proms or do them. The songs from back then were awesome, and would have all worked out, if they had not made everything white, from costumes to set pieces, and the choreographer should never have played the gym teacher also. They brought in adults to play kids, and their Billy was way to old to be in high school and having a relationship with Chris. And then we finally get an American production and they cut out all the great songs and replace them with stooped up to date songs. the story takes place in the 1970's and they should have stayed there, bullying is bullying no matter how much you try to update it. They should have kept Don't wast the Moon in a driven, and they should have kept the original do me a favor, and the workshop virsson of them getting ready for the prom. I would have cut tommy's song an egal is another bird, and written a better song for him, and put back in the full song out for blood/
I wish this musical can be noticed by more people. Don't get me wrong, I adore most of the well known ones and some of them are on my top ten (along with this one of course) but I wish Carrie wasn't so underrated. Maybe someday it will be well known like the others? I don't know. Hopefully someday It will.
I love Carrie so much! It was the 1st book I read by Stephen King (who's one of my fav authors) so I was skeptical about the musical at first. But it really surprised me (not you 1988 version). I get chills at the "Doesn't anybody think that I hear?" part.
I feel like it’s a little unfair to compare Linzi Hateley here. The “An eagle’s just another bird” line didn’t exist yet. “Doesn’t anybody ever get it right” wasn’t the song’s climax there, it was the part that came after (that is unfortunately not included in the modern version). Additionally, the part in the 1988 version is in a lower octave, so there’s no high note like in the revival.
look! yes keaton may be a lot of people’s favourites, but can we just take a second to appreciate ALL of these women!! They all did an absolutely amazing job with the characters incredibly high notes!
IT'S SO HARD TO CHOOSE THE BEST! I love Molly's acting and the way she hits the notes and her voice soars! But also, Linzi, even if she doesn't belt like most of the others her sound is just so interesting and there's something about her that really reminds me of the Carrie from the book. But my favorite, at least in this song, is Evelyn! I mean, her screlting just fits the song SO well! I'm actually disappointed that other Carries didn't do it
Linzi has such an interesting voice. Like it's almost nasally in her early career, but not quite. Now it's got this goooorgeous richness to it. I mean *ahem* it's not like i've listened to basically everything I can find of hers...not at all...*shifty eyes*
Keaton! She threads the needle between a theatrical and musical performance so perfectly. Normally, screeches are too theatrical and take away from the natural transition of musical theatre (normal speech -> singing -> dancing) but with Keaton, the screech builds up from under the note and gives the impression that the rip is an extension of the note and not an interruption or sacrificial move. I’m in love.
Molly is always gonna be Carrie for me, she brings a very special believability to the character that I haven’t seen in any other portrayal. However, second best goes to Keaton- I think her acting is spot on, especially here. The way she sings here is also the next best IMO, along with the way that she shows the complete anger that Carrie is feeling.
Ive watched this about 15 times in 2 days and ITS SO AMAZING!!! I love Keaton, Evelyn, Rose and Molly, they all bring something really unique to tge character of Carrie.
I want to like Keaton's but I feel like cutting it off so sharply like that might be damaging. I'm not familiar with healthy vocal practices, so I can't claim anything. Is it OK for her to do that?
Kodoku Pierrot I can’t tell if it’s a choice of the voice breaking or her not supporting whilst she’s singing that note. Either way it does add another layer to the character of Carrie!
God watching this video makes me so sad because I’m currently in the production of Carrie at my high school as Sue Snell and on the day of opening night it was canceled (with the promise of being postponed but idek at this point) because of coronavirus and like anything related to Carrie at this point is just making me so upset

Keaton Whittaker's voice and her acting gave me chills! I also love Linzi Hateley because she's the blueprint for Carrie's voice. Also, The 1988 instrumental did something to me 😩😩. Such a pure 80s powerhouse sound, I loved it.
It's definitely amazing and powerful, but I think it was a little too much. She's got an incredible voice, but this song is supposed to show Carrie completely breaking down into a rage, so the focus should be on her emotions and not riffing and opting up. Not to say she did bad. She definitely has the most powerful and piercing voice of the bunch outside maybe Evelyn and Keaton, and that note really does punch you in the gut the first time you hear it.
Things I have learned from this video - An eagle’s just another bird (until he can spread his wings) - Nobody ever gets it right - Nobody Carrie can hear
Keaton was my favorite because if you're doing a musical and you have a singing part, you should make sure that you make sure the character is singing, not you and I think she really nailed that and the points where it sounded kind of raspy added onto to frustration and anger to Carrie plus I think her way of performing the song was incredible and stood out from the others to me, and she hit the notes and held them out so I liked that
Can’t understand why no one is talking about how amazing Linzi Hateley was??? It seems like people don’t like the 1988 version but that was undoubtedly my favorite one🤷🏻♀️
Anyways, Keaton's my favorite. Her entire portrayal of Carrie is great and I felt like she really struck the golden balance of anger and innocence - I loved the roughness of her voice juxtaposed to the clarity. (:
Was anyone else shocked by Danielle Jenkin's high note on "Hear"? The other singers, after the word "I", went down on the word "Hear", but Danielle sang an even HIGHER note! I was blown away!!
Hands down Keaton, it’s so haunting and I liked that she made it mostly straight tones (not too much vibrato) so you could hear the emotion in her voice on the high parts
There’s something about Keaton’s performance that’s so cool to me. Maybe how she acts it-the anger and passion. It all really shows in the raspiness of her voice. I love it
Even though this may possibly be the oldest, I absolute love Lingi Hateley’s. Second would have to be Keaton Whittaker’s, and third would be Rose Riley.

Evelyn Hoskins, Rose Riley and Keaton are my favorites
epicgamergirl127 Thank you so much!!!
Rose Riley you’re welcome!!! You’re a great singer of my god
Same!!
Molly is so underrated in terms of the horror factor, she gives off OG Carrie horror
Things I have learned from this video
- An eagle’s just another bird (until he can spread his wings)
- Nobody ever gets it right
- Nobody Carrie can hear
I loved Evelyn Hoskins hold out and how the pit played slower and it gave depth to the music
I love Evelyn I think she was amazing and I definitely prefer her voice over the others
oh gosh keaton whittaker gave me goosebumps, but linzi hateley will always have a special place in my heart!
Keaton was my favorite because if you're doing a musical and you have a singing part, you should make sure that you make sure the character is singing, not you and I think she really nailed that and the points where it sounded kind of raspy added onto to frustration and anger to Carrie plus I think her way of performing the song was incredible and stood out from the others to me, and she hit the notes and held them out so I liked that
Keaton's emotion and Evelyn's strong voice I cannot they are so good
Definitely molly. she's amazing in the role as a whole, but especially that part
i like that even though it’s lower, Evelyn still portrays the emotion and power that the others do!
3:56 CHILLS BEGIN HERE!
I’m auditioning for Carrie and I will use keatons move to make it emotional. Wish me luck!
Can’t understand why no one is talking about how amazing Linzi Hateley was??? It seems like people don’t like the 1988 version but that was undoubtedly my favorite one🤷🏻♀️
I saw the show with Keaton Whittaker and she was fantastic!
Evelyn Hoskins is ridiculously underrated
KEATON - her voice, as so many others have stated, really captured who Carrie is especially in that moment.
Keaton will always be my favorite! The way she stresses the ending of her words really brings out the character
Anyways, Keaton's my favorite. Her entire portrayal of Carrie is great and I felt like she really struck the golden balance of anger and innocence - I loved the roughness of her voice juxtaposed to the clarity. (:
Ok there all so good but Linzi had the great vocals and amazing instruments to back up the sinning the orchestra made it more scary and I love it
Keaton the way her voice cracked just sent chills down my spine
I have been waiting for this! Molly will always be my Carrie but Evelyn and Keaton smashed it. But Molly gets extra credit for her Sissy Spacek eyes.
Was anyone else shocked by Danielle Jenkin's high note on "Hear"? The other singers, after the word "I", went down on the word "Hear", but Danielle sang an even HIGHER note! I was blown away!!
hi I like Keaton the best
Hands down Keaton, it’s so haunting and I liked that she made it mostly straight tones (not too much vibrato) so you could hear the emotion in her voice on the high parts
There’s something about Keaton’s performance that’s so cool to me. Maybe how she acts it-the anger and passion. It all really shows in the raspiness of her voice. I love it
Even though this may possibly be the oldest, I absolute love Lingi Hateley’s. Second would have to be Keaton Whittaker’s, and third would be Rose Riley.
I honestly love all of those powerful singers. They were all great!!
Keaton was awesome
keaton is my fav but i love how it's pitched different in evelyn's version and she holds those notes so long 😩😩
The girl breaking character on the far left at 3:33 is me watching my friends on stage while I’m on stage with them
Keaton. She screamed and kept control and pitch but so much emotion. She rules.
Evelyn Hoskins held really beautiful notes
Keaton Whittaker had a lot of rage and emotion.
those are my top 2 :)
I love Molly. The first girl and Rose were amazing. But the version with Keaton has Alice ripely ❤️
Jon Mathes Thank you!!!
Rose Riley no thank YOU for being my new hero
