The fear of technology could be because of how the AI machines worked. Since it is not detailed enough we don't know if the thinking machines could take over any technology remotely. Imagine a calculator that would only give the answers that whatever AI was controlling it wanted you to get. Or humans at least believed they had this power. When humans, who were generations of slaves, no longer knew how the technology worked or how it was created it might as well all be blasphemous. It's all of the Thinking Machines either in body or mind. Space is huge there is no telling if there is a ship of AI lying dormant between stars waiting for the day it picks up signals of sufficient technology to infect.
