Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 has remained popular for so long that it's essentially in development again, only with hobbyists instead of paid programmers. I can't think of a bigger compliment to the original team than fans picking up the torch all these years later to continue their work.
I cannot tell you how nice it is to see new coaster/ride-types being added to _RollerCoaster Tycoon_ that actually LOOK like they belong in the game to begin with and are graphically integrated properly. While I understand perfectly replicating the utterly flawless pixel-art of MicroProse is somewhat of a tall order, it seems like nearly every time a modder introduces a new coaster or ride-type they don't even try, and you end up; graphically at least; with an ugly hodge-podge of reused graphical assets that you just kind of have to _pretend_ looks like what it's supposed to represent. By contrast, these custom and modded Coaster-types look like they could have been in the game since its original release and fit right in with the rest of the fantastic graphical work MicroProse did. Here's hoping that in the future this same approach is taken, and talented modders can help add to the game; with faithful visuals; other things that weren't in the original RCT releases but fans always wanted and always would have loved.
the reason why this is possible is because rct graphics aren't actually pixel art, they're pixelised renders of 3d models of things, i think i've seen the game author's page that shows the actual models once and this means that if your 3d software's settings are *just right*, you can come very close to the original graphics
It’s Simon Foster’s pixel art, not Microprose’s. But yes, my requirement for merging new objects was always that it had to fit with the original graphics. We have also fixed dozens of problems in Frontier’s objects, since they had a _lot_ more problems besides their graphic style not matching.
Even the official RCT2 expansions whiffed it in style with their awful gaudy scenery design. I avoid using it whenever I can because it feels like they put unrelated assets into the game.
That’s probably why they sacked Chris Sawyer, made 3rd party programming doable and they felt that would eat into their pockets, when ironically it would be the opposite as open RCT would sell.
These new Open RCT2 developments are so exciting! I’m hoping that someday we will see new things like banked curved drops on the Arrow/Vekoma track, steep-to-level on wooden track, and additional inversion sprites for train types that can’t normally invert.
The artists did a phenomenal job with this. Been wanting to build some of my favorite coasters for a while now but they were always hybrids. Great job, ORCT2!
@@RobsRobotChannel No, never tried it, I'm still in the RCT1 scenarios that don't even have access to those. But I know he's previously explained you can charge for bathrooms, so weird first aid stations would be an exception.
It's so cool that we have RMC's I-Box and Raptor models in the game. I only wish one of the new elements was the Zero-G-Stall, one of RMC's signature elements. It's also cool that the launched lift hill for the I-Box has LSMs.
You can essentially create a zero-G stall by using the zero-G roll and then switching back to the other direction in the middle, instead of using the autocomplete suggestion for the inversion
Same with the Stand-up coaster, along with giving it barrel rolls, and optional sitdown trains (with decent stats). I say this as many TOGO coasters (the good ones) are known for their nearly 90° banking and signature "boomerang curves."
I never understood why Chris Sawyer and MicroProse didn't include those for the corkscrew/hypercoaster models...Magnum XL 200, the very first hyper coaster, had banked turns on the out-and-back turnaround...it was purely just a conscious choice they made, and it makes no sense.
With these custom elements being introduced, I'd also like to see them tackle some of the ai quirks the game has. Isn't it the case that guests can easily get lost right now if the only thing connecting two places in the park is a transport ride?
It's because the game treats transport rides as... well... rides. And so guests see them as rides, and will therefore make decisions of whether or not to ride that ride based on their intensity preferences and happiness. In order to bypass this, the developers of OpenRCT2 would have to find some way to at least co-classify, if not completely re-classify, transport rides as valid options for the pathfinding engine. I'm certain that it _could_ be possible, but it would require an absolute _ton_ of work in the pathfinding engine. But it could also open up tremendous opportunities for guests to be able to choose to take a transport ride in order to cross a whole park to get to another ride, or to get back to the entrance to go home. As it is, I don't even bother with transport rides at all because they're basically useless otherwise, but I would totally start working with them again if they could actually function in a transport aspect. Bonus points if even roller coasters could include a little "cheat" checkbox to classify them as a transport ride for the pathfinding engine so that Nevermore Park's "novel transport system" can work, too! :D
The workaround in the base game is that guests will always ride a transport ride if it's free, regardless of its stats or their mood. That's the only way that an elevator/lift design like Sky Tower in the Six Flags parks can work; if you charge anything for that then some guests will refuse to pay it (or run out of money) and get stuck up there permanently. It's a shame they couldn't have at least made it so you can charge different admissions at different stations.
I remember there was also a unofficial expansion pack for RC2 somewhere on the internet made by modders long ago. It has for example a swing chain carousel (baffling there was never one in the base game) and other new attractions. I wonder if they ever get added to open RCT2 Maybe you can take a look at it some day? Still weird they RCT2 and Open RCT2 never got that many mods like SimCity 4 or the Sims games.
This is FANTASTIC. That was always one of my biggest gripes with RCT2, that there was very little expansion of the track elements from RCT1. Things like medium loops and larger corkscrews are exactly was RCT2 was missing. Also, the barrel rolls with the ability to enter them from slopes, looks soooo much better rather than having to flatten out and then enter the barrel roll, like you have to do in the original game. Would love to see these elements on all the existing track types as well. Also, would love to see the ability to enter a corkscrew from a banked or sloped tack piece as well.
This is just amazing. I’m so glad this game is still thriving. OpenRCT is the real RCT3 for me lol. I hope one day we can see the wing coasters and flying coasters with large loops and some flat rides being implemented in the game.
I'd love to see the Heartline coaser being rebalanced and also getting some new elements it can have in the real world like the 90° tilting chain lift and thehalf loop direction change
Woah that looks really cool! Also are they called Zero-G rolls because they can give 0 vertical G's (since I think normally when it's still you get 1g)

LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! So informative thank you so much! im new to open RCT2 and am currently working on A park. Amazing work has been done for the new RMC coasters, d absolutely love ne more element fr these though, A stall would make these even more amazing to see, I would love to see A BnM wing coaster added with the same Elements as the single rail with maybe A longer inline twist elementt aswell? j. I would also LOVE to see An Intamin Blitz Or MACK rides launch coaster added, with option for chairlift or LSM launches? and maybe special transfer eements? maybe Swing launch modes? and finally maybe some new flat rides, they are lacking. in the game. but as OPEN RCT2 is atm its beyond amazing compared to the Vanilla! can't believe im so addicted to RCT2 in 2022 lol. thanks again for your videos.
I wish there was a option to add all special pieces to all track types (limited only by available train sprites). For example, the swinging coaster doesn't have boosters, and their helixes and sloped turns are so limited, I can't create a design I like. Spiral and steep (and vertical) chain lifts would also benefit so many coaster types. Actually, more turns in general would be nice with the options to change slope. Also more banking options like soft, medium, hard, and 90 degrees. The wooden coaster in RCT1 I believe had soft banking.
I want to see a couple of fairly compact coaster designs that make at least some use of these new coasters and their new features. But since saves are not possible, it'll probably take a detailed video on building them.
Good evening to all fans! My name is Giulio and I'm writing from Italy. I have the old "RCT2" cd-rom for computer. Is the version of RCT1 or RCT2 with expansion already available? I would like to play with the two new types of roller coasters. Can you recommend some links to order the new game online or to buy packs with expansions? I sincerely thank you.
I'm getting flashbacks of when I went on the HULK at Islands of Adventure over and over (there were no crowds, no waiting) until I had concussion symptoms.
cool, i'll guess arbitrary ride changing and obscuring is needed for them on other track types. I always wanted a ''giant loop'' as even the large one doesn't cut it in some cases.
Hybrid coasters , namely by the company RMC are some of the best rollercoasters in the world right now. I'm thinking lightning rod, steel vengeance, iron gwazi. They should be in RCT for sure! I only have RCT classic on my mobile and I'm hoping it will get added at some point.
I think the game might crash if you build an old (vanilla) coaster type in OpenRCT2 and change parts of that coaster to elements from 1 or even both the new coaster types like the Hybrid & Single Rail. Unless that is tested before publishing this release. I'm sure not all the vanilla coasters can handle the new "Zero-G Rolls" 🙂
I really hope that in OpenRCT2, they add the small and large banked turns that RCT3 had, they really helped make the excitement and intensity work so well for me 🙏 would be really fun to have that on the vertical drop and twister coasters
I'm really happy they've added new coaster types and even with new track elements! And like you, I do hope they put some of these new elements onto some of the other existing coasters. I do also have a different wish though, while coasters are great I do also fancy flat rides (borh gentle and thrill) and would like to see more added. Likewise with stalls. And as always, thanks for the video :)
one of my top favorite coasters ive been on is the Twisted Timbers, at Kings Dominion. Its so crazy to think what is possible when tech advances. I have not been on Steel Vengence at Cedar Point yet to see how it compares, but its on the list.
Never been on twisted timbers but steel vengence is hands down the best coaster I've ever ridden. Hybrid coasters are really something special. All the dampening and compression/flexing of wood with the capabilities of modern steel rails. I bet we'll see a lot more of them popping up in the future
I hope they add checkbox somewhere to only show original RCT/RCT2 parts for those who want to experience the game the way they did in childhood. I mean there is nothing wrong with new stuff in itself but if the game is no longer what I grew up with, it would not attract me anymore.
I kind of want to see a scenic view "ride" that functions like a completely flat no maintenance observation booth, if only so guests have reasons to wander around the huge maps the game came with.
I would like to see railroad crossings where we don't have to build paths or railroad tracks over one another. Have it in the code to when the train gets a certain distance from the crossing, to turn on an invisible "NO ENTRY" sign to keep people from crossing through.
Man large corkscrews should be added to everything that's so clean and sad that it's only available with what is kinda just a gag because that's not a single rail that looks more like a curving piece of string
It’s interesting that the hybrid coaster didn’t make it into the original RCT or RCT2, because it made it into real life no later than 1991, with Kings Island’s Adventure Express.
The OpenRCT2 hybrid coaster is based on the RMC IBox coasters, the first of which was built in 2011, 9 years after the game's release. Adventure Express is a hybrid but it's not an RMC, it's a mine train coaster. RCT2 does in fact feature a mine train coaster, although I think it is based on the Vekoma model rather than the Arrow.
You will not lose any progress and as far as I know there aren't any issues with updating. There might be new bugs in newer versions, but unless you overwrite your save after the bug has happened, they won't change your save files.
Hmm... couldn't one make a track design that doesn't have the new elements but can be easily replaced with them in order to get around the whole being unable to save them thing?

Marcel Vos the Boss!
Now I can finally build Zadra Coaster, wish me luck
Good evening to all fans! My name is Giulio and I'm writing from Italy. I have the old "RCT2" cd-rom for computer. Is the version of RCT1 or RCT2 with expansion already available? I would like to play with the two new types of roller coasters. Can you recommend some links to order the new game online or to buy packs with expansions? I sincerely thank you.
RCT players when World comes out: 🥱
RCT players when 2 new coasters are added: 😭😭😃🎆🎇🧨
Hey Marcel, great vid as always. I was wondering if you knew about CS's Locomotion and if you would ever consider youtubing about it :)
So close to 100k! :)
I just want them to release open source assets for OpenRCT2 like OpenTTD did, then we could have a fully free (as in freedom) game.
FYI, X7123M3-256 is just leet speak for Xtreme-256 ;)
I really hope that in OpenRCT2, they add the small and large banked turns that RCT3 had, they really helped make the excitement and intensity work so well for me 🙏 would be really fun to have that on the vertical drop and twister coasters
I'm really happy they've added new coaster types and even with new track elements! And like you, I do hope they put some of these new elements onto some of the other existing coasters.
I do also have a different wish though, while coasters are great I do also fancy flat rides (borh gentle and thrill) and would like to see more added. Likewise with stalls.
And as always, thanks for the video :)
So good!! Rocky Mountain Construction manufactures coasters like these in real life. They are some of my favorites.
one of my top favorite coasters ive been on is the Twisted Timbers, at Kings Dominion. Its so crazy to think what is possible when tech advances. I have not been on Steel Vengence at Cedar Point yet to see how it compares, but its on the list.
I have been on both. Steel Vengeance > Twisted Timbers
Never been on twisted timbers but steel vengence is hands down the best coaster I've ever ridden. Hybrid coasters are really something special. All the dampening and compression/flexing of wood with the capabilities of modern steel rails. I bet we'll see a lot more of them popping up in the future
@EVERYONE watch Mr. Vos' videos in 0.5x speed or slower!
I hope they add checkbox somewhere to only show original RCT/RCT2 parts for those who want to experience the game the way they did in childhood. I mean there is nothing wrong with new stuff in itself but if the game is no longer what I grew up with, it would not attract me anymore.
I could have sworn I saw these coaster types in Parkitect.
Problem with audio, sounds like speaking through can
I kind of want to see a scenic view "ride" that functions like a completely flat no maintenance observation booth, if only so guests have reasons to wander around the huge maps the game came with.
OMG. Hybrid coasters in RCT2 is perfect!
> Zero Gee Roll!
< B-b-but l-lateral gees...
> I said ZERO. GEE.
fantastic coasters! marcel please make some more videos about cool builds and layouits for this one
At this rate we could get an RCT 2.5 expansion pack with new rides and missions.
Sweet! I can finally make the New Texas Giant in 6F over Texas!
Now I need to do a hybrid conversion on Big Dipper. (After the crash)
Its really funny that there is now a coaster type that originated in 2011 in a game that released in 2002.
I would like to see railroad crossings where we don't have to build paths or railroad tracks over one another. Have it in the code to when the train gets a certain distance from the crossing, to turn on an invisible "NO ENTRY" sign to keep people from crossing through.
That has been in OpenRCT2 for several years.
It says it's for android, but every time I down l download and open it, it says the file is corrupted.
so far so great, i whish they also added the Zero-G-Stall.
great video keep it up!
They should make large medium and small loops available for all inversion capable coasters
Man large corkscrews should be added to everything that's so clean and sad that it's only available with what is kinda just a gag because that's not a single rail that looks more like a curving piece of string
The large corkscrews are also available on the LIM launched coaster (and the giga coaster if cheats are enabled).
Someone really likes rocky mountain construction lol.
Roller Hi Corear
I Hope they will add the Zero G Stall for booth of this Coaster Typs in the future
Zero G rolls? What next, corkscrew _Brabantian worstenbroodje?_
Are there any good custom scenarios which includes the new coaster types?
Still no corkscrews on the hybrids?
Wow! This is all I’ve ever wanted since 1999! 😂
I'd like to see that mythical corkscrew like the one on Mine Blower on the wooden coaster
Hey random question. If upgrading from an older version of OpenRCT2, will you lose scenario progress? Any other known issues with updating?
You will not lose any progress and as far as I know there aren't any issues with updating. There might be new bugs in newer versions, but unless you overwrite your save after the bug has happened, they won't change your save files.
Hey marcel where do i download it I clicked the version but link do I click
Would be mental if we could use outerbanked corners in openrct2
Hmm... couldn't one make a track design that doesn't have the new elements but can be easily replaced with them in order to get around the whole being unable to save them thing?
Yes, you can do that.
I always dreamed of having an Intamin hyrualic launched coaster in this game as a kid. So surreal to think that that may happen one day!
