  • There are various ways to cut the plastic. The hot knife I used gave me a fairly narrow and clean cut. After the repair was completed I did perform a relearn of the blend door. It requires a professional scanner to do that (mine is a D8 by Xtool (about $700) but I only did the relearn because I do not know what broke the original door. It worked normally just before I did the relearn but just in case the range of motion of travel distance was off I did it. This job took me about 5 hours on a hot day taking additional time to shoot video. The hardest part was cutting through just enough plastic next to the upper two screw holes to allow removal and not go too deep. Remember that when you insert a screwdriver into the cut edges use care because the heater core is like less than one half inch on the other side. The chevy dealer locally stocks the door because it is a chronic condition. I am just one mechanic with a mobile auto repair business and this is the 2nd one I have done in less than 3 months and the 3rd one I have verified as broken. (one person actually traded their car in after I told them what it needed but that was before I did the very first door replacement. The items I bought..
    The work light you see me using in this video has been upgraded and the price lowered. It is now powered by a Milwaukee M12 slide in battery which many pros already have. The new version is seen here : www.goosegrip.com/product-pag...

    most times I would be critical of "cutting a dash, but that's a hell of an Idea using a hot knife or plastic welder!

      Yeah, of course it seems crazy..at first. But $3000 to $3500 to remove windshield and complete dash is more crazy and your Camaro .... do ya think that after all those fasteners, clips and wiring routing is undone and then put pack, will that Camaro ever be the same? I say prolly not. That result is worse than cutting open the hvac housing and reaching in and replacing the broken door.

    • @justinemrick5211
      @justinemrick5211 2 года назад +1

      @@Goose-Grip yeah I think part of the reason people are quoting 3500 is because they don't want to mess with it, once the glass is out of the way, it's only about 10 hours to r&r that carrier. Yeah, I just can't believe that GM designed it so that you have to remove a windshield to get a dash out.

      Buy the hot knife, don't try it another way. Buy white out if you don't have any. Make sure the piece that you will outline follows the shape I chose pretty close. Be careful that you do not damage the stantion that one of the screws goes into that supports the actuator, it can happen quickly if you not watching the clearance while using the hot knife. Use a good light because you don't need worklight stress. Call me if you want. My number is easy to find.

      Yes, battery neg disconnect before unplugging anything. Cleared any faults after door replacement. Had no leftover issues. Temperature was now changing from cold ac to heat. Used same blend door actuator.

      Its going to work just fine even without a calibration, but because none of us mechanics like to get that call "its doing the same thing as before you fixed it", we do the calibration. So pay someone to do the initialization/calibration as soon as you can after you do the job.

    • @Goose-Grip
      @Goose-Grip  Год назад +3

      No you don't have to reprogram anything however whether the battery was disconnected or not disconnected, the one thing that should be done is to relearn the HVAC actuators using a professional scan tool. It is possible there may be a way to do it without a scan tool if you Google "relearn HVAC actuators without a scan tool" often by pressìng a sequence of buttons it does a relearn. It is thought that the reason the door breaks is because of it moving the door beyond its safe range of motion thus putting torsional twist stress on the door shaft and one day it just snaps.

    Is it possible to accidentally cutting the heater core ?

    • @Goose-Grip
      @Goose-Grip  10 месяцев назад

      Not if you use the hot knife with the thin flexible 6 inch blade. You are only putting slight pressure and pushing just the tip of the blade through the melting plastic. When the blade pushes through you will feel it just "bump" the edge of the heater core which in no way would damage the core. No different than a hot knife through a stick of butter and when the end of the knife pops out the other side of the butter, do you think the tip of a squared off knife blade will then melt through aluminum? No it will not. The blade tip on the hot knife is about and inch wide and squared off and about the thickness of one millimeter. You going to perforate the plastic one inch at a time, one next to the other untill the cut is complete. Hope that detail helps.

    • @Goose-Grip
      @Goose-Grip  Год назад +1

      After you remove that screw that holds it and its flopping loose, pull downward and spiral your pull down motion. The holdup is the lack of clearance with the bcm and bcm holder, but it does go past it and out. Be careful as it passes by the plug into the blend door actuator. Yeah, the first one i did i struggled with how it comes out but it does. And it goes back in the same way. I even trimmed like 1/4" off its length to assist putting it back.

    Get a scan tool go to hvac acctuator ..and calibrate the acctuator n itll stop putting presure on the door the factory dont calibrate um why they break the doors needs to be calibrated with scan tool.

    • @Goose-Grip
      @Goose-Grip  2 года назад +1

      If the factory does not calibrate them, don't you think that there would be millions more of broken doors in many other models and not just this generation Camaro? Did the subassembly department that assembles the complete dash and HVAC hosuing just say "no need to calibrate these" ? Anytime I remove and replace either an actuator or a door, I always perform the calibration in my scanner. But, I am not sure that is enough though. There may be some other gremlin causing this.

    • @dalegribble5314
      @dalegribble5314 2 месяца назад

      @@Goose-Grip I'm with you on the calibration thing. they all break in the same spot because it is very weak poor design. they should make the door with a metal rod and attach plastic door to that. but, that's why the replacement door is $20 cost and not $100...
