I remember when the record came out in 1982, and just that song title tripped me out... "Volcano for Hire"...was just as thought-provoking as the music itself! Thanks for listening.
Not to mention that Omar Hakim would soon record/tour with David Bowie (Let's Dance), Dire Straits (Brothers in Arms), and Sting (Dream of the Blue Turtles).
This must have been in the course in the early '80s but I have bought this album. My first introduction to weather report was River people. And then after that I got caught up with with weather report. I love the jazz fusion sounds of Ronnie laws and the Crusaders and a few others but I really went there with weather report.
The way they hit the last note of the tune was so cute, I half expected them to jump up in the air, pose, and get stuck there like an 80's movie ending 💀
Much love and respect to their contributions to the new wave style of playing jazz music. The key element here is Joe Zwalimuls battery of keyboard synthesizers encompassing Wayne's powerful sound.
Always loved this song. I could hum the original version note for note ever since I was around 15. But playing it is another thing. Learned the drums for it as well and was very proud. It's funny how hard the band is working and the audience is all yapping but I'm sure that's a sign that they're all feeling good!
Yeah, I was about 16 when that record came out, early '82. WR was at the top at that moment...they were wiping out the Downbeat magazine reader's polls...#1 band, #1 sax, #1 bass, #1 keyboards, #1 album....same with Swing Journal magazine in Japan. I was at this concert, and I can assure you that the audience was feeling VERY good !!!
Awesome song by Awesome Band that is Weather Report love this Band brilliance Rest in Peace Zawinal and Bailey they open with this tornado riding on the back of a Hurricane where did they go
WR had lots of good lineups, my favorite was in '77, but it's so sad what happened to Jaco. Wayne leaves a body of work that is exemplary. Somewhere, young musicians with these influences are working their way to the fore.
@@PatriotSteve - in 81 was when Jaco freaked out at this venue. He kept throwing off the band with bizarre time substitutions, until the rest of the band stopped. Jaco kept going, and the stage was rotated for the next band and the plug pulled on Jaco. Zawinul fired him. So Jaco is on the album, but this band was hastily created and worked up the tunes for the next season (82).

Definitely. Although I missed Peter Erskine’s big band chops when he left the band, Omar Hakim brought a more explosive rock-funk-jazz thing to the band’s sound. The whole time that Omar Hakim was playing with Weather Report, he was also recording / touring with David Bowie, Sting, and Dire Straits. Versatile as hell.
@@rohnfloresmusic I liked Hakim best when he sounded a bit like Erskine on the Night passage LP. Like on the tune Procession, where he played in a soft, diffuse and searching style for most of the tune. Although I like funky rhythms, Omars more aggressive style does not excite me (neither Zawinul in sloppy, loud or repetetive mood). His soft funk on D flat waltz was great, while the intensive parts were largely pretty boring, to my ears. For instance.
Man, imagine a time when shit like this got played at a place like the Bowl for a crowd that size (Ignore the fact that nothing gets played anywhere, thanks COVID-19).
+Andy Nelson I was there, and this was one of the highlights of their performance. Although the VHS tape makes it look like this was their opening number, this was actually performed about midway through their set. They opened the set with the moody “Procession”, which was not even released yet. The VHS tape only features about one-fourth of their set, lots of stuff was left out. But cameras were rolling the whole time, from what I remember, so Playboy has it all locked away in a vault somewhere. At one point, the band walked off the stage, and the late comedian Brother Theodore came on for about ten minutes of intense monologue. Then the band came back onstage to finish their set and dothe encore with the Manhattan Transfer.
I saw the concert just the week before, at the Palladium in NYC. Never felt that much energy. Hakim and Bailey were ecstatic to be part of that band and it showed. Hakim did the longest, craziest solo; broke his sticks twice; Shorter and Zawinul were chuckling.
Thanks Philippe - I agree, the energy level that this band had was something else. Interesting that Zawinul considered this the best band in the WR lineup; quite a bold statement, since every version of this band was other-worldly. I saw them again after this on the Domino Theory tour in early '84 at the Beverly Theater in L.A. with Mino Cinelu on percussion and they were TIGHT. Omar Hakim was on fire at that point. - Also saw them in April '83 for the Procession tour at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A. with the same lineup as this video, Jose Rossy on percussion. But between '82 and '84 this band really became one tight unit on stage. At least they went out with a bang.
@@phpn99 I saw the same line up in New York at the Miller Time concerts at the Pier and I agree the energy was amazing! That was my second time seeing this amazing band. My first was September 1982 at the Memorial Auditorium, Montclair State College with Peter Erskine, Jaco Pastorius and Dom Um Romao... THAT SHOW blew the roof off! I remember Zawinul was yelling at Erskine the whole show DURING the songs... Jaco's solo was unforgettable... I was indelibly changed forever at that was my first "electric" Concert I ever attended! Thank you Maestros for a lifetime of inspiration!
Excellent progressive jazz band and this melody is exciting, where the genius of the great Jaco Pastorius was lacking, although this bassist is very good too, Gracias por subir el video, saludos desde mexico .
@Lord Of The World, Funnily enough, I just found Weather Report Live in Cologne '83 yesterday on youtube and was reminded just how good the line up with Bailey/ Hakim/ Rossy was. Then I was referred back to this comment from 3+ years ago.
as far as WR goes this is the SHIT Saw this lineup with procession live so I'll die more peacefully 😂 RIP members gone and long life for those with us ❤😍😎
Bass player freakin awesome. I thought it was Jaco b4 i saw who it was. Don't know much about this band, I'm more of a rocker, but progressive jazz rock is amazing, also Chick corea Electric Ladyland was it?
Great show... Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for stopping by Sir! It's an honor.
Wow, is this the real Ron Carter? If so, I have deep respect for you and your work...
Dear Mr Carter, I love your work, from a musician to a great bassist! Love it!
Rest in peace dear Wayne Shorter!
The three are now in paradise 🙏 (Zawinul Shorter and Bailey !)
Jaco too
Oh no, Victor too . RIP
Omar Hakim gets in that pocket and he never leaves. What stamina, power, musicality, and improvisational prowess!! This whole band is mind blowing.
That was Peter Erskine!

You're kidding right? Please don't tell me this is true!
Sadly, it is.
Rest in peace Jaco too eh?
So nice seeing Omar in the drum chair.
He's a skilled drummer, but Erskine had better swing and groove, not least on this tune.
Omar just killing
Just the concept of a "Volcano for Hire" is a hell of a thing! Just imagine the mind that conceived that!

@green fox That's my theory on it.
@green fox Makes sense to me, who knows for sure? Could easily have referred to Zawinul as well.
Omar stays in the pocket and it's hard to do that with an arp synth going on. Amazing time and connection.
I saw the same line-up of Weather Report in Norfolk, VA, around 1982 or 1983.
I miss weathet report soo damn much! Every single version of that band was simply superb.
Holy Cow what a terrific piece, Omar Hakim was fabulous
Please listen to erskines version youlll like it too/ maybe better❤😊
They couldn't have been any better just fantastic
