Double dipping is also a huge problem. There´s a lot of folks out there with a desktop gaming PCs and say an iPad or Macbook Air. Had this been on Steam or GoG, you could easily just install the port with your account. But this forces you to buy it twice, which I really don't fancy doing.

Fair comment, and I am with you to a point, but... Apple has deep enough pockets to subsidise the devs in porting to get the Mac off the ground as a legitimate gaming platform. Of course the incentive to do so is to cream a percentage off the game purchase by selling through the App Store. I can still be on board with that, but I am not going to buy a Mac license for a game I already have for PC unless I can cross save progress between the two, and Game Center doesn't allow that

My main concern is what you mentioned in the middle of the video, which is anything you buy now will be unplayable next time Apple changes something on their OS or hardware. The games I bought on Steam in 2006 still work today, even on a new device like Steam Deck. I bought COD 4, which you highlighted, and other games during that era like Rome Total War and Prey. One other thing you didn’t mention is the habit some publishers have of simply not maintaining or fixing issues. Aspyr and Feral Interactive used to be the main shops porting games to Mac, but they rarely pitched issues or kept the games up to date when drivers or APIs changed. Tomb Raider was a rare exception that got a Metal release.

There was a moment when Apple almost got serious about gaming, that's when Steve Jobs introduced Halo to the world. When Bungie was bought by Microsoft right after, Apple should have double its effort instead of cowering. The Gaming Industry is worth than film and TV production, but according to Apple, Apple TV+ deserves more attention than Apple Arcade, however they should know where the trend is already headed.

@@4CPTeesThe thing is, Apple is already massively successful in gaming. They are making more revenue from game sales than Microsoft. We are talking mobile games of course. You just aren’t charged for the item you already have; the bundle is cheaper for not having to pay for that item, and you still qualify for the bundle discount. If, for example, on the iTunes store, you are considering a movie bundle and you already own one or more of the movies in the bundle, sorry. Tough luck, pal. The bundle price is the bundle price with no discount. You are punished for having bought those items before and you are charged for duplicates.

9:20 Resident Evil 4 does support cross-platform progression save. I'm not sure why you think it doesn't but I have played RE4 on my Mac, then moved to the iPhone and it got my saves just fine. You just need to manually use the iCloud upload/download feature in-game to sync it across instead of it being an automatic process (it's just a single button click though).
Either way the App Store has this issue for other apps as well. Even for Xcode (which is smaller than most games), the App Store installation experience absolutely sucks. I think they should just fix it across the board and give normal apps a download manager along with the other improvements.

For @Playan, RE4 has cross-entitlement. You only need to buy it once. It's only RE: Village (which came out first) that doesn't support it (meaning you have to buy Mac vs iOS versions separately). At least Capcom is trending in the right direction by moving to universal purchase in RE4.

They should try focusing much more on gaming on macOS if they want more users. It’s already known it’s not for gaming in the gaming sphere. They could easily change that if they updated OpenGL to 4.6 and either support vulkan or help out moltenvk. Stealing some market share could be possible if they teamed up with valve to bring back proton and pay them to be there as the last agreement didn’t seem that good to keep it going. This is a pipe dream for macOS user’s so idk if that will happen. Just dualboot asahi Linux as they want to support vulkan and latest OpenGL on apple silicon. Only thing you’d have to tackle is using microvm, fex-emu, anticheat.

Putting the Apple Silicon version of the game only on the App Store means that it only targets people that only have a Mac or the latest iPhone. Most people who already game have a catalog on Steam and none of them is going to start buying games on the App Store. I think if Apple wants to make people consider Mac as a gaming platform too, they need to take the L, put the games on Steam, and work with Valve to make the Apple porting tool kit work seamlessly just like Valve did with steam deck.

I won’t be buying AAA games from the App Store. I’ve already purchased them or I will continue wanting to use them on a dedicated add or possibly portable device. As well as know that I will most likely be able to download them in the future by using a platform like steam. Apple just needs to let steam implement a translation layer much like they did for the steam deck only for macOS. And they can sell more hardware as the side benefit. Using the App Store and not knowing if the game is going to be downloadable in the future is not an option at all.

ios apps work the same, they don't download from the developers apples policy requires anything that's executable be downloaded from the app store. Also I had Counter-Strike on Mac and steam just all the sudden ended support for MAC and its no longer available. Also apples policy is you buy the app once and can use it on all your devices, these developers that are charging twice for different devices are doing so by submitting the same game but as a new app and targeting that new app to only be available for a given platform (mac/ios/ipad)

Even at the best of times, the lock-in to Apple's ecosystem is a deal breaker and I'm not talking about the walled garden. I bought Stray on Steam when it came out and played it on PC. Now it's released on Mac, I can just downloaded it on Mac via Steam... Obviously Apple's never going to sell Windows/Linux games on the app store. They're playing themselves if they think people wanna pay for things a second time, whichever comes first. The fact is Steam, Epic, EA if it's worth mentioning, plus independent publishers, legacy publishers and self publishers aren't going away. THEY need to be the way you game on Mac, it doesn't matter how well it runs. When they're forced to open up the iPhone/iPad app store to third parties they're going to find out the hard way you can't cheat your way into all things.

Been trying to game on a Mac for well over a decade. We need to be pushing for Apple to work on the porting tools and for those games to be available on Steam. There are many advantages to letting Steam be the game client that Apple just can’t and shouldn’t compete with. Apple and Valve should be working together to push the Mac gaming front forward before it dies yet again.
I still dream of a day where I can game on my Mac like I do my gaming PC, but without these steps we will never get there.
