Im an old head and im just gonna throw this out for the younger fellas in the audience. The expensive USA made brand name knives and multitools and other gadgets are great, but you know whats more handy than one good knife/multitool? A handful of acceptably functional knives/multitools. Ive got some great old knives and leathermans all made in the US and if it was my money right now, im buying the Icons and the Gordons of the world. If I can stash passable knives and multitools and flashlights around the house and car then I know I will always have them if I need them. Thats peace of mind that is priceless, and you will thank yourself the few times you need to call on those items.
EDIT: 8CR13MOV and 8CR14MOV are just the Dr. Thunder version of Aus-8. chemically the same metal. Also, fun fact, the naming schemes you see for chinese produced steels like 8Cr13Mov is a naming convention that was initially used in European countries for the steels they produced. To be more specific German and British steels I believe used this naming convention for a while. I have seen alot of confusion about this online thinking that the Chinese steels are inferior and while that my have been true a few decades ago, these days we are talking about a country thats been manufacturing things since the Britons were wandering around with bone necklaces and smoking salvia for shamanic rituals. the city that chinese knives are made in specifically was making cutting implements for a very very long time before American corporations decided to sell us all out for profit and move manufacturing overseas. I take great pride in the Chinese knives I own, because that is a country with a long and storied history, even if we dont agree politically these days you cannot deny the lineage of their manufacturing.
All trash made in China is by choice, they are capable of making quality stuff. You just have to buy from a reputable brand.
I just got the Gordon multitool today and I have to say it is very impressive for the price. I think it will be replacing the Gerber NXT I have been carrying in my bag.
Hate to say it but buy that laptop sleeve for your college kid protect them at school.
