  • I remove the cylinder head, clean and decarbonize the block, piston crowns and Head, Lap the Valves, fit new valve steam seals, replace the Head Gasket, put it back together again, torque it all down, Fire it back up again and I get a set of extractors for it!
If u are thinking of changing your head gasket over yourself this video will help you see what you may be up against. Overall nothing is to hard, just get a good set of instructions like the Workshop Manual I use. They can be picked up cheaply and take out all the guesswork.
This is a Fairly Detailed Record Of Experience Changing the Cylinder Head Gasket on my old Land Rover Series 2a with the Rover 2.25 L Petrol Motor.
I noticed the Old Landy Running very rough after doing a Compression Test on the cylinders it became fairly clear that the Head Gasket had likely blown between cylinders 3 and 4.

A little bit late to your party but thanks for this video. Kind of obvious now but I never thought of standing in the engine bay to get the head off and back on! Thanks again.

Hi Reg from WA if you have a 72 ID plate that may well be one of the very last 2As made !it would have had a sychro gearbox ( sychro on ist and 2nd ) like series 3 box's but i think with the 2A bellhousing and clutch mechanism would be interresting to chase up the chassis number with and landrover club or registry. Not saying it would be worth heaps in terms of dollers , but intrinic value , yes !imagine having the last 2A assembled in Australia ! Or made in the UK ! Imagine that !

Yeah it would be interesting to chase up. It has the older gear box without the synchro 1st and second with the older clutch mechanism.

Hi mate this is Reg from WA ,i *ve done about 4 or 5 cyclinder heads on different series 2A and 3 s , looks like your doing an ok job , i probly would have done a leak test with kero to see how much leakage from valve seats , they didnt look to bad in the footage, i have seen worse ! One trick i do to speed up pulling valves out of heads is using a socket and a blow from a hammer , the collets come apart very quickly ! Also i use a little grease to hold them in place when compressing the valve springs when putting them back together. Also regarding head gaskets nothing wrong with either type the composite type may well be more forgiving , some people say after 1992 the fuel was nt the same and more blown head gaskets on the 4 cyclinder series . I noticed your 2A is one of the last ones 70 or 71 maybe ?

Hey Thanks For all the info that’s awesome really helps for next one I do. Yeah it’s actually on the plate a 72 series 2a, it’s always confused me being a 72 when from what I read series 3s were in production buy then?

Hello, hope you are well, I have a business opportunity for a serie 3 with a broken head motor, please let me know your opinion, should I buy it? Is it an easy fix?

Hi Bruno, if the rest of the car looks pretty good I can’t see why not. Do you know what motor is in it? Series land rovers are always good projects in my opinion. Hopefully it’s just the head Gasket but if it’s a cracked head, block or something more sinister that may be a little bit more difficult. If it turns out to be something like that you could always look for a replacement motor should be pretty cheap if you are prepared to work on it yourself. Just get the workshop manual and follow the instructions:) let me know how you go.
