I had once an opportunity to meet Tom Alter somewhere around 1980 when he had already passed out from Film institute, Pune. He was with his two friends, Raza Murad and Rahul Sengar. M’am, you don’t need to explain anything. All you need to ever say is that Jamie is the son of Tom Alter - the legend. I have been a big fan of Jamie’s father, his class and command over language. My eyes well up with tears when I realize that he is no more with us in person.
Believe me its not just "gora" prejudice. I'm a south indian from Bangalore n I speak hindi quite fluently without any southie accent. Many of my well educated north indian collegues have asked me same question when they hear me speak fluent 'delhi-wala' like hindi which they've asked Jamie i.e. "Aapko itni ACHCHI hindi kaisi aati hai?" India is such a versatile country with so much cultural variety that one indian from north finds difficult to believe another indian from south can speak better hindi than them.

Similar incident happened with my father. Once he went to tailor, may be it was lodhi road, he was there to pay his bill. At the same time, a "gora" came. The tailor just looking at him told him amount in Hindi. My father, being considerate towards tailor, told the same amount to the man in English. My father was taken aback when that man replied in Hindi 😂 That man then told him that his family settled in India many years back and he was a regular customer of that tailor.

I know I’m probably in the minority but I’d like to share this - As a four year old Indian kid back in the 80’s, when I saw Tom Alter for the first time in a movie (can’t remember which one, for maybe about two minutes I thought he was a foreigner. And then he started speaking perfectly Hindi, and my four year old heart (not the mind!) instantly recognised his soul to be as Indian as I was (maybe a bit more fair skinned but we have such a huge spectrum of skin colours in India, from really fair to beautiful dusky skin that I assumed he was part of that wide spectrum), and ever since then it utterly shocked me when the rest of the country saw Tom Alter as anything BUT Indian. I wish I could have met Tom and told him that, it was only later as an adult that I came to appreciate how frustrating and hurtful it must have been for him to constantly have his identity questioned by the very people he saw as his own. I would have liked to be one of the few to have helped him see that not everyone here is quite that racist. Some of us see the soul more than the skin. And I do believe younger Indians today are slowly waking up to see such things. I know Jamie is being very generous and not openly calling out the racism in India, but it makes me deeply sad that as a country, even with the internet and more exposure to the world, so many refuse to Jamie for what he is. He’s certainly more Indian than I am! And I see so much of his father’s eloquence in him, Tom spoke flawless Urdu, as Jamie speaks flawless Hindi. I hope my story helps some other people here realise - that some of us do see other people’s essence, and are not so easily limited by external appearances 🙂

No worries, FWIW i am part of a religious minority (Sikhism) - but am not religious. I was agnostic once myself, but I guess I would now identify as spiritual, it was the books of Brian Weiss that had me questioning my agnostic approach to life. Funnily enough I picked up his first book Many Lives, Many Masters with the clear intent of finding “holes” in the book, but by the time I finished it it shifted my entire perception about my place in life, in India and in the world Maybe you’d like to check it out someday. So I am an Afghan Canadian who grew up watching Bollywood movies from the 90s. First time I came across jaime’s channel was through that music video and my jaws just dropped at how a gora cloud be so dedicated to Bollywood. I commented on how he was an indian at heart, not knowing his was Tom alter’s son and an actual Indian. 😂
He seems to be a very sweet and innocent person.

I had once an opportunity to meet Tom Alter somewhere around 1980 when he had already passed out from Film institute, Pune. He was with his two friends, Raza Murad and Rahul Sengar. Believe me its not just "gora" prejudice. I'm a south indian from Bangalore n I speak hindi quite fluently without any southie accent. Many of my well educated north indian collegues have asked me same question when they hear me speak fluent 'delhi-wala' like hindi which they've asked Jamie i.e. "Aapko itni ACHCHI hindi kaisi aati hai?" India is such a versatile country with so much cultural variety that one indian from north finds difficult to believe another indian from south can speak better hindi than them.

We live in a judgemental world where people irritate you by making perceptions and assumptions all the time using their eyes and ears. N I know its easy to say but hard to tackle such situations... Similar incident happened with my father. Once he went to tailor, may be it was lodhi road, he was there to pay his bill. At the same time, a "gora" came. The tailor just looking at him told him amount in Hindi. My father, being considerate towards tailor, told the same amount to the man in English. My father was taken aback when that man replied in Hindi 😂 That man then told him that his family settled in India many years back and he was a regular customer of that tailor.

I know I’m probably in the minority but I’d like to share this -
As a four year old Indian kid back in the 80’s, when I saw Tom Alter for the first time in a movie (can’t remember which one, for maybe about two minutes I thought he was a foreigner.
And then he started speaking perfectly Hindi, and my four year old heart (not the mind!) instantly recognised his soul to be as Indian as I was (maybe a bit more fair skinned but we have such a huge spectrum of skin colours in India, from really fair to beautiful dusky skin that I assumed he was part of that wide spectrum), and ever since then it utterly shocked me when the rest of the country saw Tom Alter as anything BUT Indian.
I wish I could have met Tom and told him that, it was only later as an adult that I came to appreciate how frustrating and hurtful it must have been for him to constantly have his identity questioned by the very people he saw as his own. I would have liked to be one of the few to have helped him see that not everyone here is quite that racist. Some of us see the soul more than the skin. And I do believe younger Indians today are slowly waking up to see such things.
I know Jamie is being very generous and not openly calling out the racism in India, but it makes me deeply sad that as a country, even with the internet and more exposure to the world, so many refuse to Jamie for what he is. He’s certainly more Indian than I am! And I see so much of his father’s eloquence in him, Tom spoke flawless Urdu, as Jamie speaks flawless Hindi.
I hope my story helps some other people here realise - that some of us do see other people’s essence, and are not so easily limited by external appearances 🙂

No worries, FWIW i am part of a religious minority (Sikhism) - but am not religious.
I was agnostic once myself, but I guess I would now identify as spiritual, it was the books of Brian Weiss that had me questioning my agnostic approach to life. Funnily enough I picked up his first book Many Lives, Many Masters with the clear intent of finding “holes” in the book, but by the time I finished it it shifted my entire perception about my place in life, in India and in the world
