Tips for buying a New Peterbilt... Get the Cummins X15, Order it with the Wide Track front axle , Order the Davco fuel filter/separator system (Do not go with the Paccar filter/ Separator system!) . Trust me you will be much happier.

There is no difference in the steering geometry of a long hood and a short hood. If you don't like the steering stops, adjust them. A shorter wheelbase 389 will turn sharper than a longer wheelbase. If you don't like the 5th wheel adjust it and lube it properly. FYI that bolt coming out of the front is the adjustment. Smartnav is a POS I agree! That's why I didn't get it on my 389. 23 gauges on the B panel is what I ordered.

If you do regular maintenance on your dpf you have less problems. Every 150-200 thousand have it cleaned. As far as the def system, I have only had two issues since 2010. One was a bad sensor and the other was a burnt heating line. One more thing, I have never had as good fuel mileage as I do with my 579 Pete with a pacar engine than i ever had with any other truck.

    • @47rintin1

The engines which are named PACCAR are DAF engines from the Netherlands. For 16+ tons DAF Trucks are the second best in selling in Europe. The economy, reliability and comfort of a DAF are great.
Since the end of 2013 DAF has a facility in Brazil and is a threat for the big 3 there: Mercedes Volvo and Scania.

Especially PACCAR cylinder heads come back like you wont believe it. If I were to ever purchase a truck PACCAR whether it is Kenworth or Peterbilt wouldn't be one of them. 1.) Nothing you can do about that except better specs. Only benefit to short-hood 389s are no long tractor permit needed in BC Canada (if you even go there).
2.) You can swap touch-radio with an aftermarket. It's a pain though - primarily the wiring. Probably best to take it to a professional unless you're good with car audio.
3.) Kenworth fifth wheel. I got one, raised to 52" since I pull tankers (makes the axles weight out better since we don't do sliding tandems). Pull tab is much easier to pull and locks.
4.) DPF/SCR can be and should be deleted if you can, but if you can't, spec rears to run high RPMs at 65-70. Keeps the DPF nice and hot, and hot = longevity for those things.
5.) Never ever ever ever buy a Pete/KW with an MX-13. Some guys will argue, but the Cummins is objectively superior in all aspects except for initial cost. MX-13 is a cheap fleet motor, hands down. Personally, I would never buy a truck with anything less than 15 liters, but I suppose if you don't pull mountains often, a 13 is okay.

Bluetooth is managed on a phone level. You can tie your bluetooth between a headset and the radio via your bluetooth settings in your phone.
Headset accepts incoming calls, audio such as music and videos route to the radio.
But make no mistake that radio is hot garbage. Software is way out of date the minute peterbilt installed it in their next generation 389's
Running android 4.1 when the cellphones out now run 8.0 up to 10 & 11x
    4.1 was back in 2005.
The radio constantly crashes. And yes as expected because android 4.1 was poor development anyways. It was just a fast & cheap way for peterbilt to take a pile of crap and turn into something nice to see.
Also the freeze issue is a quick fix you have to hard reset it by holding 2 buttons.
You hold the return arrow and the 3 dotted button on the right at the same time. Hold them till screen flickers. Then let go. (Buttons on the smartnav radio box, not on the screen)
This will reset the android O.S. and reset the screen. Radio will start working again.

I traveled a lot all over the world and what I've seen about American trucks: a few outside the US and Canada. This so-called PACCAR engine is a DAF MX-13 and DAF Trucks are sold all over the world. In 2013 PACCAR opened a factory in Brazil to build DAF Trucks. There Mercedes, Volvo and Scania are losing market share now.

I am 4 years too late. But, as for using plastic parts for crucial engine components (fuel rail), truckers are not alone on this poppycock: carmakers do the same things in gasoline engines. Naturally, you don't need me to tell you how leaking gasoline on a hot engine is much worse than diesel! Even Toyota & Honda were in this. Of course, all carmakers replaced these plastic fuel rails with the metal ones within their warranty. Naturally, everybody has to cut corners somewhere to stay competitive. But, using polymers as a material for very sensitive, delicate and critical engine parts is: WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!🤯🔥🔥

The hood has nothing to do with the steering box location.
It is in the same place.
The cab is 8 inches back on the frame.boy you ain't a truck driver
I had a579 that had over 300 000 and had only one thing go wrong.

I'd like to see Prez. Trump tell the EPA to drop the DEP systems. Not one of the environmental agency's, even CARB, can specify how harmful the diesel emissions are. They proved how Lead effects the environment, not diesel emissions. Not a single study. That's called 'hysteria for no reason'. I'd like to see diesel engines become more efficient, w/ that efficiency will come the reduction in 'harmful' emissions, whatever they are. But everyone wants to complain about the cost of transport. Well, they're staring it right in the eye w/ these DEP systems. I'd like to see a delete kit & a re-flash program that can be installed by the owner, not the dealer.
