It’s a simple rule of travel that anyone who takes too much interest in you is probably gonna try something. The honest people are too busy working and getting on with their lives. Doesn’t mean you have to avoid everyone, but instantly, instantly, you should raise your level of suspicion.

    • @okok72277

@@okok72277 I have been to countries where the tourists are rare and the locals are curious. That’s fine. What I am talking about is the need to raise your level of suspicion. You don’t need to accuse anyone or avoid anyone. There might be a bunch of people helping or watching or pointing you in the right direction. But when someone emerges from the crowd, speaks your language (and probably half a dozen languages, not that there’s anything wrong with that!) and wants to slide smoothly into your daily activities, just be aware. This person has targeted you. Your first reaction is to be friendly and trustworthy. Be that way, but not blindly.

So when I met a pair of guys who told me they were Southern Italian (clearly looked Romanian or Bulgarian…), I instantly greeted them with “Ciao amico, piacere, come stai?” They could not look more helpless. They uttered a pitiful ciao in response and I knew from that moment these guys were amateurs.

If you are a tourist, this is my advice:
      1. Tell the police in civilian clothes, that you are a tourist and do not know about police procedures or how IDs look like.
      2. Tell them, you call 911 to check their names on the ID if they are real.
      3. Then call 911 and check it (at least 911 can tell you if there are any unmarked police units in the area and send uniformed support in case).
Normal police would understand your worries. Criminals would run or harass you.
Of course, this only works in stable countries. In Mexico, you put a 20 or 50 $ bill in your passport and do not care if it is the real police or some armed gang member.

They stopped a group of 5 Chinese tourists, flashed some fake ID and demanded to see their passports and wallets. They said they were looking for counterfeit money. When they saw i was watching them they got pissed and told me to fuck off. When i replied in Dutch they had no clue what i was saying. They sounded East European. I called the police who had a team of undercover cops in the neighbourhood. (A pickpocket team) They were there in 5 minutes and caught the scumbags.

A Romanian thief who impersonated a police officer to prey on tourists has been jailed for 10 months.
Chirica Dragnea, 52, was sentenced on Friday at the Old Bailey for this part in an organised gang that engineered an elaborate scheme for conning visitors to the City of London, the Square Mile's police force said. City of London Police said Dragnea, along with an accomplice, would pose as a tourist and a police officer to lull their victims into a false sense of security.
The ruse involved the fake tourist asking an unsuspecting member of the public for directions on a map, providing an opportunity for the impersonated police officer to intervene, the force said.
The fake officer would then take advantage of the real tourist's unfamiliarity with British police procedures to begin searching them for counterfeit money. During the search, the crooks took items including cash, identity cards and bank cards, and sometimes even demanded the victim's bank card pin. Police said Dragnea was arrested last year by genuine officers after being found in possession of an "official-looking" ID card in a black flip wallet.
He was dressed smartly, and with an accomplice dressed like a tourist with a fake camera around his neck.

Nobody should be allowed to come to England, walk the streets and prey on the public and other tourists.
