I love this. There are so many how-to videos out there, but showing examples and working through it is so helpful. Could be a new series?? Where people submit their clips and you comment on them and talk us through it?
The first time I ever cased was in the traditional sense - on a motocross bike in the late 1980's (acutally had a 1986 Spesh Rockhopper back then as mtb was kinda a new thing to get my dirt bike jones satified). I'd been eyeing up the big triple all season long, as I'd normally double the first two and jump the last separately, only to get passed by someone doing the triple and zipping right past me every lap. So, on the next lap, I vowed to click up a gear out of the berm before the triple and gave it the full beans. Right as my front wheel left the lip, the two stroke KX125's power-valve opened causing the bike to rocket skyward into a classic flying-W for me......I made it to the last jump, but 50/50 cased it hard, leading me to cartwheel OTB - my bike was nice enough to catch me between the fender and buzzsawing rear tire, then cartwheel down the track - it was a bit ouch. So, the next time you casually case a jump on your mtb, realize that it can always get a helluvah lot worse!!!! PS - my wife is a lawyer, and gets me out of all my cases these days.
i dont know of anyone else putting out videos with equal parts humor and good instruction. also what you did to that bike at the end of the vid was straight up criminal
If your for sure gonna case, you can (sometimes) put the rear of the bike down and effectively reduce the fall by near a bike length, (mostly effective on tables in my experience)
poor bike 😂😂 some good advice, wish i could scrub the jump getting really low like that it looks awesome , its so easy to pick up bad habits when jumping & riding the trials you dont even realise it unless some one point's it out to you , great vid 👍👍
Good vid! There's so much difference in the distance/speed equation on jumps depending on the rider's technique. I suck, so typically I need to go a little faster than those with high-level skills, in other words I don't have enough pop to make up for taking a jump at slower speeds. Great jumpers seem like they can almost levitate riding on trail. I think you should do a vid just on teaching technique to maximizing distance.
as a long time freerider and dirt jumper: no, don't go to the bmx track, those jumps are huge and have mellow lips, if you don't know how to pump harder and how to pre-bunny hop a jump, you will NOT make it. I'm currently trying to tame a 7ft high 10ft long jump and its' lip is not as steep enough, so I'm having a hard time clearing it without having to boost the living shit out of my jump.
For anyone who doesn't have the time to watch this entire video, the secret to not casing jumps is make sure you jump far enough. You can thank me for the time I just saved you.
Good call. After Roskopp sold/left Santa Cruz and how they did the goat dirty GOOD RIDANCE!!! Santa Cruz can $uck it. Let the dentist stay with them. Pains me to say that. Being from SC, born and raised. But it’s not the same company, town or vibe anymore. My 1st bike was a 97 tazmon (still got it) I’ve had almost every bike in their range up to 2007 when I left commiefornia for the mountains of western NC.
Can't seem to find the 'dead sailor' video Ben refers to.. I see there is two in the 'How NOT to' playlist, but when I try to access one video is not available.
Correction: Coming down with ferocious vertical speed on a landing is bad new for your bike...and GREAT news for you lawyer! The bigger the case, the bigger the payout for him.
The guy in the video on min 8:45 also has a bike that's way too big for him to use the bars efficiëntly as a lever. He needs to find a bike with a lower RAD size
My technique for not casing big jumps is to go too fast the first time and adjust my scrub as I am leaving the jump to make the landing and not overshoot.
I've watched every how to, every explanation, every theory, and every demonstration there is on how to jump....and they are all bullshit. The only thing that is important is: do you KNOW how to move in the air, or not? Most don't. I don't. And jumping anything of size when you don't is a game of chance. Watch that dude Bobo, he doesn't know how to move in the air, he doesn't know what he's doing wrong, he stopped progressing and started making funny films instead. Then watch any favorite rider you know that CAN jump, and watch them in the air. It's super obvious when you see a follow cam between the can\cants. A person that can jump is moving the bike even before lift off and well through the landing. It's like drifting a car, you initiate an act of instability to harness a pseudo stability in its place. If you want to learn this skill and NOT get hurt, my suggestion is a ramp into a pond with a pool noodle on a trash beater bike. There ya go, try things out penalty free. Even foam pits hurt. Just don't believe these videos will teach you. Your perfectly straight sailing dead pigeon bike trajectory will eventually crash you.
Cathro's ability to demonstrate bad technique is second to none. It takes incredible skill to look that bad!
This is the only thing I can say I'm better at than Ben.
@@ChristopherBloomagreed 😂
@@BenCathroI don't know how you did all those awful examples without crashing a ton.
Everytime Ben is in a Video my heart skips a Beat. Wonderful as always. We LOVE you Ben !!!
Ben is literally the only reason to follow pinkbike
I have to agree, sure miss Tom Bradshaw 😢
Seriously. F Outside. They let some good people go when they got rid of Bike. They're even screwing up Trailsforks.
agree
Yeah. The other guy is lame.
I appreciated the MW2's Intervention sniper sound
lol
I was about to say the same !!
I’m sad he didn’t edit in a 360 no scope 😂
"You're smarter than you look". The nicest thing said to me all day!
Uh,he said it to me-I heard it
I was talking to the other guy ❤
I love this. There are so many how-to videos out there, but showing examples and working through it is so helpful. Could be a new series?? Where people submit their clips and you comment on them and talk us through it?
This series was supposed to be just that but then I got too excited and well, the above is the result.
I think Phil Kmetz did a short-lived series doing exactly that didn't he?

Loved the story 🙏
New cathro video = essential viewing once more 👌
Interesting fact. I built that blackboard on the decking of the emergency accomodation we were in after our house flooded. #BTSFacts #TheMoreYouKnow
🤔
More entertaining and useful content from Ben Cathro! Thank you!!
Ah this is the good stuff.Back to fun and informative in typical Cathro/sleeperstyle.
Love your energy and vids Ben! Always super funny and informative. Real gems within the youtube mountain biking content!!
Cheers from France
❤ Cathro. Everything he does is gold.
Yes Ben, on the Deviate! Those stem spacers and high rise bars though. If they change anything, it's that stack height! :)
really love mine! but yah stack is a bit low, but 30mm spacer and 35mm riser puts me in a good position, i'm not 12feet high like ben tho
Got some 70mm rise deity’s now 😅
Im loving this new series 🫡
Great to see Ben again!
i already know i will love the whole series
I laughed the whole way through this vid, thank you Ben and pinkbike ✌️🥰
+1. Ben and his team have quite the skill to teach things in a highly engaging manner. There's a business there I would say.
Absolutely, i think learning to case safely is even more important than learning to clear stuff.
I know Cathro at one time had his own channel, and came to PB but man, I still think Cathro would have a huge solo channel.
Maybe at some point. Getting into DIY and woodworking now I’ve got my own place, could be something in there 🤔
@@BenCathroI’d subscribe 🎉

I once trusted some random dude's judgement of my jumping skills and accepted his advice on what to do. It hurt quite hard.
Cathro for king, president, prime minister you take your pick! 😂
Buy a DJ and go to the pump track or BMX track. Start small. Best way to learn. Also. That’s ACP in Arizona. Fun track.

I have one rule about jumps, if you finish the day with no blood coming out of you it's a good day 😅
Entertaining and Informative.
Cathros the best presenter
Deviate!
5:42 Alright…who dropped Matt’s shovel?
Hi, Ben, what’s your height and what frame size are you riding of that Deviate))?
That last guy had some balls... once. Imagine going for the stock gap with no experience of jumps. It's actually Jackass worthy
For anyone who doesn't have the time to watch this entire video, the secret to not casing jumps is make sure you jump far enough. You can thank me for the time I just saved you.
With deviate now?

People just can't understand how helpful is to learn to bunny hop on a flat ground before hitting jumps
Erm, where is the Santa Cruz? Deviate looks sick tho
Because he's officially out of the dh team as a rider, he doesn't have a primary bike sponsor if I recall correctly
Daddy Cathro with the glasses
Been so out of touch with MTB..... didn't even notice the switch to Deviate bikes.
What's the formula to calculate the speed?
Buck to superman to front wheel case is a tragedy that can be avoided with this here video
I cannot seem to find the video he is referring to. Can anyone find it?
how do you fit on this bike ? You're 198 tall, I think you're 520 reach for this bike and you use a spacer under the stem.
My demo 8 is the "casemaster 5000". 🤣
Before watching the video I'll write the answer: more speed! Now let's check if that's true or not?
The other video is hidden on YT for some reason :(
Can't seem to find the 'dead sailor' video Ben refers to.. I see there is two in the 'How NOT to' playlist, but when I try to access one video is not available.
Yeah I can't find it either. Would be nice if they shared a link!
Oh, I case everything, then every now and then I go so long to flat. My poor bike saves me but, man I wish I was more consistent?
Sometimes i'll use a mid air Mario double jump to get extra distance.
lets hope the bikes are ok
Is there a good "how not to bike" for bailing? We keep seeing people ride on the face with arms in excellent breaking position.

How dare you state that mtb plays second fiddle to motocross...
How NOT to ride. With all do respect my vertically obese friend I am way more qualified to show the people how not to ride😂❤
This video is rubbish and should be taken down. Also, this is definitely not a Friday Fails burner account.
Failed attempts at humor, throughout.
