Hands down, this series is the best explainer I’ve found on the elements of how-to-ride-good. The visuals are clear, the script is perfect, Ben’s presentation is bang on. No distractions or confusing bits, no weird omissions. Endorse.
I just want to take a second to say, that intro cut is freaking amazing and one of the best things on the internet. Really top shelf stuff guys, kudos!
For those interested in the physics behind why pumping works it’s the law of “angular momentum”. Velocity increases when mass moves to the central focus of a curve. Put more simply, the riding technique is “go in small, come out tall” when navigating any curve (up, down or around). I’ve done this instinctively for years as a bowl skateboarder but only recently discovered the physics behind why it works. I’m learning to hit the trails on bikes and your videos are a great help, Ben. 👍
Just discovered this series as a roadie with decades of experience. I’m learning a ton as I start my MTB journey. Ben is friendly, funny, easy to watch and giving me so much knowledge!! Thank you 👏🤙
No matter how many videos I see on a topic, you always cover something I've missed or make me think of it in a new way! Now if I spent as much time riding as watching videos...
echoing what others have already said- I think Ben (and the other people who made this series) are the best at teaching these skills than anything else I've seen online.
Best explanation I've seen on RUclips. Great info with when to pump on the transition vs on the down slope. They both get the pumping speed, but one almost always sets you up wrong for the next feature
Finally someone who explains in detail all the key skills in mountain biking. This is the only guy (ex-pro) on earth who really share how to ride properly? ....Definitely these series are the ones that you can really learn!
Cathro should do more videos, these are so good! His over exaggerations are hilarious and still demonstrate his point perfectly. Can’t wait to see more Cathro!
Amazing job Ben and crew! I never learned so much about mountain bike like I got from these videos. I bike for more than 10 years now and these are the best explanations I ever had. I can see I improved after watching, A LOT! Thanks for the informative, cool and fun videos.
Dude, thank you so much. I've always struggled with pumping through turns. When you said "a berm is just a bowl turned sideways", it clicked! I don't know why I never got it before, but now I do! Thanks so much again.
Just wanted to say thanks and congrats on this series. Everything from writing, filming, editing, performing, riding, etc have been top notch. Good stuff!
wish I had these videos to watch when learning all of these skills, although I feel ive for the most part mastered all of them I still enjoy watching it and haven't seen it explained better anywhere else. if I had seen this when progressing im sure I would have gotten to the level of rider I am now a hell of a lot sooner. keep it up ben!
You're killing it with this series ben! So many other videos are sorta wishy-washy about the physics. However, I wish there there slightly more diagrams and/or overlays. There are lots of words and descriptions that are not completely reinforced visually. A subtle knee angle change could be called out with a couple lines, over-layed at the knee with riding footage, with a graph perhaps to show/prove exactly *when* the legs are extended to create that pump, in addition to the verbal description. Still absolutely the best video series about the technical aspects of riding a bike! Something along the lines of the masterful plot of the center of mass of the rider when pumping/absorbing on the trail.
I wrote so much down in every Episode!! Im riding Enduro MTB for 1 1/2 years now. And i feel like im understandig how to ride for the first time. Now i have so much "practice sessions" coming. Not just stupid riding. :D Thanks a tousand times!!!
Even know I though I knew how to pump this is so detailed and refined that I still learned quite a few tips, especially on timing. Amazing video Ben thanks a lot !
Cathro s the man like!! How is it when he explains it all it just seems to click and come together! Another great vid bro and the team canni wait for the cornering one. 🤘
I've been pumping a bike for thirty-five years and I still learned a FEW things Very well done well explained and visual aids to boot. Thank you Waiting for YOUR next video.
13:24 interesting bit on where the transition actually is in a turn. On rollers or on a pump track it's sortof "obvious", but on a berm it doesn't always make sense where the transition is. Because the thing is on its side. Thanks Ben and PB, can't wait to try this out!
This was my favourite of the series so far. Pumping to get cornering traction is something that I was sometimes managing to do intuitively but not really understanding it. Some corners just felt like I could cut them super sharp and still come flying out. Now that I know what's going on I find I'm doing it a lot more, and it feels great.
Stunning, the most useful & clear video ever seen. Clearly explained, graphical, riding demonstrations (how to do it-how not to do it),I mean, it's just excellent, I'm already recommending this video). Thanks guys! lml !
All the vids in this series have been fantastic, but his one is exceptionally so. Outstanding work, the effort, care and attention to detail that has been put in to making it so refined is very evident, but delivered in such an engaging and digestible way. Gold standard stuff, thanks so much, I will be watching this many more times in the future.
Best tutorial on pumping that I have seen. Pumping never made sense to me until now. Also, I feel vindicated about my self-taught cornering technique that is the same as explained in this video, especially in regard to the forward-to-back weight shift. Until now, I had not heard anybody recommend it. In fact, some say it is poor technique. Screw them - it works and it is FUN.
Thanks Ben. Two of us watched this the other day before we hit the bike park. WOW! cant believe the difference it has made to our day still much to learn. Just found seat down stand up peddling is exhausting! shaved 50% or more effort on some of the trails and more speed and more fun. Cheers
I'm somewhat competent at pumping rollers and whatnot, but the tips for pumping in berms is definitely something I want to work on. Getting around bermed corners with any sort of speed is a technique I have a lot of trouble with. Thanks!
This is probably the best 'How to mtb...' series out there. Fair play to Ben and the team for building such a well paced and planned course. Any plans to resume real-world coaching? Coz if you do, I'm on my way. 10 outta 10, lads
Fantastic video(s), Ben. Your way of instruction is top notch. I’m just getting back into mtb after…too many years. Recently I’ve been watching HOURS of video. Your way of presenting, and choice of graphics and info-graphs, is the best I’ve seen. Thank you! 🤙🏼
@@oliverbourne9599 Yes, but still more intelligent than Oliver Bourne. Poor, pitiful Oliver Bourne. By the way, you mixed verb tenses in your attempt to insult. You're in a hole. Stop digging.
I’ve been mountain biking since I was 12 so it’s been 8 years of me trying to learn these techniques. I paid for so much coaching and things like that and none of my coaches or anyone I met just from goin out for a ride can articulate how to ride this well. Or I just haven’t met the right people 😅
Learning so much from all your videos trying my best to master all your techniques in mountain biking cos I'm 5"11 so its better for me to learn from tall guys like you.... good job bro..... 👍👍👍👍👍 five thumbs up to you.👍🤟💪🙏😅

Really pleased it’s being received as planned. Loads of effort went in from the team to really try an explain the how and why if all these skills.
This is such a masterpiece on all levels : explanation, riding skills, funny, video, editing… THANK YOU. Give that crew an award !
Couldn't agree more 👍
Just received my certificate from pinkbike. It says “U dun good”. Proud moment ☺️
This series has helped me improve more than any other RUclips vid or series. So good!
Stoked you’ve been applying some of the skills 👏
That’s incredibly well explained!
The weeks of scripting paid off!
These videos are so, so well done.
I just want to take a second to say, that intro cut is freaking amazing and one of the best things on the internet. Really top shelf stuff guys, kudos!

Ben, nailed it again! These are awesome, I find that when out riding cathro voices pop in my head. Keep up the good work🤘
That’s weird because I hear your voice in my head 🤨

Best tutorials ever seen. It's when you *really* own skills, that you can explain them so clearly and simply! Awesome work Ben!!
No matter how many videos I see on a topic, you always cover something I've missed or make me think of it in a new way! Now if I spent as much time riding as watching videos...
The way you were able to capture the leg pump and the force generated and do a replay was golden.
Who would of thunk the guy who can pick apart a line can also pick apart a skill. Well done.
I'm loving the centre of mass animations Ben
Got to say I learned pumping from the Tony hawk game
Right there with you! THPS underground 2 was my jam!
Found a problem, I’m more of an arms guy and need to work on the leg pumping. Thank you Ben!
Best how to ride series hands down! Great content and presentation. Ben Cathro Phd in bike skills and coaching 🤘🏼

As I've been watching this series, and begun implementing the things I learned, I'm getting PR's left, right end center. Thanks Ben.
No way! Used that in one of the scripts and it’s actually true! Legend haha 😆

I did laugh. I'm not even remotely guilty or ashamed. My bike's heard that any number of times... "Right, that's it pal, you're getting pumped."
We had to cut 5 minutes of me giggling like a child 😅
@@BenCathro We need out-takes on the end of the last episode then!
