  • 1 year old baby Orangutan Jarang has had his share of setbacks but on my last visit
he seemed a lot stronger and was climbing up his mother Jingga.
    Update from June 2024
Baby Jarang is soon to be undergoing a medical operation for his bi-lateral scrotal hernia.
The Zoo is hoping this will help his mobility and they have been waiting for him to get strong enough for the procedure.
The enclosure was very busy with keepers and veterinarians observing Jingga and Jarang
and mom kept him very close to her all day.
Orangutan Jingga, is a RUclips sensation, she rose to fame after a video of her reacting to a magic trick went viral on RUclips. - Monkey Sees A Magic Trick
On the 14th June 2023 she gave birth to a critically endangered Bornean baby orangutan, her first baby, a boy, was fathered by Kawan, who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands, after the previous male, Ramon, did not produce any offspring with the female group at Blackpool Zoo

At first I was pretty happy to see that at least she was carrying him on her arm. And I thought "great" she's learning from Summer. But then she grabbed him with her foot and my heart sank😢 Now I realize that I'm not a professional or a vet, but by my observations I believe that she caused the scrotal hernias by dragging him around the enclosure with her foot. Dragging his butt along the floor and the logs since he was born. I'm sure there are some people who will hate what I just said and think I'm being mean to her but I'm not blaming her as much as I blame the staff and zoo for not removing him or at least helping her to carry him differently. Controversial subject for sure!!😢

I really don't understand why people think we are insulting her when we say something about Jarang. With a new mom at that young age you don't know how they will treat their baby. She has taken him and left him at the gate several times like she was expecting the keepers to take him. She would just leave him there and walk away. That is not a normal behavior for sure! The staff should have seen from very early on that she couldn't raise him right.@shawna6683

From a zoo report: “What we do know is Jarang was born with a bilateral scrotal hernia, which requires surgery and this could be hampering his mobility." Jarang was born with the problem. Another commentator mentioned that Jingga left him a few times at the zoo gate, for the keepers presumably. Her instinct must be that the baby cannot survive and she is stressed between her nurture mother instinct and her survival instinct.

Poor baby his head hit the log when mom was climbing down . I know that must of hurt him.. Jarang is getting stronger and it looks like Jinga is watching Summer with her baby and tries to carry Jarang like her. Not quite there but she’s trying. I wish she would stop carrying him on her foot because I’ve seen him get banged up quite a bit especially his head. Hopefully soon she’ll be letting him try to do more. Praying his surgery will be successful so he can hold on with all
Limbs and start crawling, climbing and walking. Jarang seems stronger and progressing. He sure deserves everything great in his life.

🥰 Jarang is such a cutie. The zoo consulted other experts regarding the way Jingga carries little Jarang. They were told that her mothering style, although eccentric, is fine, as long as she’s not hurting him. They also consulted others about how small he is. During his surgery, they’ll be doing a lot of tests.

And then I thought to myself…hernias and digestion…he is over a year old…does he even eat solid food yet …I am so worried about him…
Jingga…I don’t think had a very attentive mom…accident that broke her arm when she was small…she doesn’t teach him or nurture him, but I don’t think she knows.
Other zoos train pregnant orangutans BEFORE the baby is born…just in case the mother struggles on her own when the baby arrives.
I suspect Blackpool Zoo has limited resources.

I wonder how they're going to separate Jarang from his mom, in order to have the surgery? She never seems to be physically separated from him. I expect they'll need to tranquillize her first. Poor Jingga; it's going to be very upsetting for her to be apart from her baby, but hopefully the surgery will improve his health and mobility.

From the zoo: “Extensive investigations have been conducted to determine the cause of this delayed development, all of which have been inconclusive at this stage.
The operation has now been confirmed and will take place soon.
“As with any medical procedure, this comes with inherent risks, but all the experts we have consulted have advised that the surgery is necessary to give Jarang the best possible chances of becoming more mobile.
“We had noted that Jingga demonstrates some unusual maternal behaviours at times, especially in the way she holds and carries Jarang.
“After discussions with primate experts, we now believe that Jingga is adapting her mothering to compensate for Jarang’s delayed development and lack of mobility.
“What we do know is Jarang was born with a bilateral scrotal hernia, which requires surgery and this could be hampering his mobility.
“Until now, this surgery for his hernia has not been considered viable due to his size and we have been waiting for him to gain enough weight for us to be able to proceed.

I think you are correct. One commentator says that Jingga left Jarang at the gate for the zoo keepers more than once. She must be under stress because she intuitively knows the baby is not well enough to survive the way he is.

The commentators saying she left him at the gate does not know what they are talking about. No one who watches these videos of a few minutes knows what is happening. That is their opinion and my opinion is they don't know at all that she was leaving him there for help.

    •  2 месяца назад +2

I think it is just a guess…but if you look at Jingga sitting in the middle of the enclosure…hmmm…and we know that she cared for by zookeepers when she was injured as a baby…so…maybe she is trying to communicate something
