So I don't want to waste your time but can you throw me some links to start from basics. I want to buy a device and produce music with my ipad. Thanks
I think I learned more from this vid than all the other PO videos I've seen. Question about your samples (like your bass and horns): Do you always record them in a certain key or do you match the sample to your chord progression? I'm not sure how the key of the sample affects the scale of the melodic banks.
Codey Sivley Thanks Man! Yes, I always sample my instruments so that they are all in the same key! By having them all in the same key the melodic samples are already in a scale that works with the rest of the samples! Having all the samples in the same key you can also pitch them a full octave up and down too if you wanna switch it up for a section!
How did you get your samples in each individual track? because everytime i sample it goes straight across from 1-8 so how do i get a sample in each button ?
Maserati Sparks Hello! You are are going to need to sample each Melodic sample individually into each melodic bank. The drums, river, and chords will each be recorded into their own drums banks and the PO-33 will chop them up into separate samples in each drum bank! It’s a little bit of a process but it yields fantastic results!
GREAT LESSON !!! I want to make a lo fi beat too , so I got my PO137 (which is a Rick and Morty version of PO35) , but I can't layer things that much like you. I can only make a drum beat layer and one layer of melodic stuff , is it the limitation of PO137(or PO 35)? thankyou very much!!!
I do not own a PO-35, so I do not know the limitations of it. From what I heard people perform on the PO-35, it seems that you can have the drums and one melodic sample at a time. I wish I could help!
Hey man, I recently got a PO -33 for christams and was wondering if you could make a tutorial on how to put the samples in the PO-33. Great tutorial BTW!
Hey Gar, thank you for you great video. I'm following every step, but when bass, chords and drum are playing, i can not ad the plug sound and i don't get why, because its three layers. Are Kick and snare maybe overlapping, so the PO thinks it is four layer? Anyway, keep doing great music.
Hello! If you only have three separate samples playing you should be ok! But you might have other sample from a previous pattern that are trailing into the new pattern with 3 samples causing some of the samples in the “drum banks” to cut out. Make sure that your samples are finished at the end of a pattern. Melodic samples can have the the length adjusted by holding the note that it sequenced and turning the left knob, but for “drum bank” samples you will need to adjust the length of the sample in trim mode!
Thank you!!! All I do is plug the PO-33 into the headphone jack on my MacBook and I record the samples I make in Logic onto my PO-33! It's a pretty convenient process!
Just subscribed! Great vid. Tried re-creating this on my new PO 33 today but even tho (i think) I copied everything you did. My drums sound slightly out of time? Why would that be happening? I’ve tried re-trimming my drum samples but it hasn’t had much of an effect
Re-trimming the drums is a very finicky process. I always start at the end of the sample and keep bringing the start point further and further to the beginning of the sample so that I never have any silence when the pad is triggered. I would also check your swing. That may be affecting the rhythm of your drums, hold bpm and turn the left knob to adjust it, I normally set mine to S04 or S05!
Hi if you see this, Excellent Work. Just curious, in the video at five minutes, which bank did you copy the river into for snippets to stop the trailing river?
Thank You, it is in a drum bank! I trimmed the river sample on one of the pads to a very short snippet to use it as a choke for the river sample, to keep it from trailing!
@@GarHoover oops, miscommunication, in the video your fingers move like lightning. LOL, so I was trying to see which specific bank (1-16) you put that snippet in.
Emiliano Escalante Gotcha! River sample is in drum bank 14, and the snippet of the river that I use is from “pad 15” in that river drum bank. I place the “pad 15” river snippet on the 15th step in the sequence.
Hi. I'm new to the KO, and I'm confused as to how you separate those drum sounds that are packed so tightly together. This seems waaaaaay too precise for the trim function!
Hello! I packed the drum samples tightly together so that when you hold record on a drum bank they were all record in quickly and the PO 33 will detect the transients and place them on the pads. Sometimes there will be clicks at the end of some of the samples but it is easy to remove the ending portion of the sample on each pad by trimming it! I hope that this helps!
@@GarHoover Ooohhh! So you don't record the whole 40-second file all at once, do you? You record the drums into the drums and the melodics into the melodics, one at a time, yes? Thank you!! 🙏
Really great video. Just found it. When you record samples what pitch do you use for the original sound? I was told that A is best as it gives the best overall range of notes on the PO-33.
I generally will sample in "A" or "C" depending on the song! I pick "A" when I want to be working in C Major because the sampled A will go to "pad 13" and all of notes will be the same as playing the white keys on a piano if you ignore pads 4 and 12! My Tips and Tricks tutorial covers different scales on the PO-33! In the description there is a link to the point in the video where I discuss scales! I hope this helps! ruclips.net/video/URYUZiJShps/видео.html
This may be obvious to other people. But.. on the right side. Is a Mic Jack correct? And on the left is a Jack to input sounds? Forgive my lack of PO 33 knowledge. I just got it. There wasn't a manual.
The left side is the audio input which can be used to sample audio onto the PO-33. The right side is the audio out for the PO-33 to listen with headphones or with speakers! It is confusing when the onboard mic is next to the audio output rather than the input!
Hello! There are certain parts of the PO-33 that might be require some teaching to understand the basics but I'm sure that once they get the hang of it they would have a lot of fun! The built in mic makes it easy to sample whatever they want and I know I would've enjoyed a PO-33 when I was 12!
You need to adjust the length of the sample. Go into trim mode, and adjust the length of the sample to its full length and it will continue play after it is triggered!
Gar Hoover thanks! New to PO here. I still can't get it. I put the sample to it's full length, and let's say I trigger it on step 1. It still doesn't loop and stops around the step 8. Does it mean that I need a sample that would last the whole 16 steps?
Yes getting a longer sample would work, or you could retrigger the sample on step 8 or 9 to give the the background sound a little rhythm to it! Or you could lower the pitch of the sample and it will play longer!
Thank you for the awesome tutorial. Can I ask what is probably a really stupid question about getting started: The sample seems to be not in the order you played the samples back... Do you have a method to the way your WAV sample files are structured, so I can get them over? Not sure how to do it at the moment... Sorry, I realise it's a lot of extra work for you. I'm hoping you have a "way" of doing things so I can catch up to your tutorials easily, but understanding what I'm looking at here will be super helpful for me (total noob). Thanks again very much!
Yes the samples are not in the same order in the sample WAV but I would suggest sampling in each melodic element into the sample bank that would make it easiest for you to follow along. The sounds that go in the drum banks like the drums, chords, etc. will be best to keep in their close rapid fire fashion so you can be sure to sample all of the sounds onto the PO-33!
Unfortunately each melodic track is monophonic but you can have four voices playing on the PO-33 at once. So to make chords you would need to sequence each note of a chord on a different track but if you made a 4 note chord you would have no space for any other sounds. Normally I have 2 “melodic” tracks and 2 “drum” tracks. One drum track is actual drum track and the other drum track I use to trigger chords! As you said in your follow up question, I picked 5 or 6 chords from a scale that will work well together and sample them all into my drum track and trim each one to an individual pad in the drum track so I can have them all be triggered! It works really well and I often come up with progressions I would write on my keyboard!
Hey Gar Hoover, i am pretty new to the PO 33 (got it 2 days ago). To get familar with it i wanted to build the song along with your tutorial. However i am not able to get your samples correctly into my PO. When i am recording the first 16 samples from your file into my drum bank, the PO slices the chords into more of one pieces so that i have the first chord sliced into 7 pieces or so. Do i really have to trim each of those samples by hand?
Hello! Congrats on the PO-33! I would make sure to load only the drums into one drum bank, the chords into another drum bank, the river sound into another drum bank. The longer the sample is, the more of a challenge the PO-33 has with distributing it equally across each of the 16 pads. Unfortunately, especially with Chords, the PO-33 still fails to distribute across the pads equally. Which requires manual trimming which can be very annoying. My tip with manual trimming is to find the beginning of the samples by going from right to left and getting as close to the beginning of the sample as possible without reaching the gap of silence before the sample. It's better to lose a little of the beginning transient of the sample than to have it a delay and be out of time because of silence before the sample. I hope this helps you!
@@GarHoover Thank you for your reply. Trimming manually is a bit annoying but i got it working with your video and your tips. Thank you ;) Looking forward to your next video about the PO!
Hiya - bit confused in how to record the chords used that are available for download? there are 4 chords on the wav, but if I try to record them into a drum slot (ie slot 13) it dices the chords up and doesnt let them ring
Hello! yes, this is the challenge of the PO-33, you will need to adjust the trim length of the chopped up chord. I also look to find the pad that has the beginning of the chord and then I press the effect button until I reach trim and then you are going to adjust the right knob and that will allow you to change the length of the pad you just pressed! That way the chords will ring out longer! If you turn the left knob it will change where it starts in the sample! Sometimes the PO-33 won't include all four chords on the pads so I'll adjust a pad start by turning the left knob to include the fourth chord! I hope this helps!!!
@@GarHoover yessss! This is what I was missing... thanks for all the videos...after watching a few of your videos I was able to impress the crap outve my friend who got me my po33... thanks for your response and for the great videos! 👏
Hey can you please recommend a good day way to put your samples in the po I'm planning on doing a back up and saving once I have them in right but it's fidly to get the samples in as they are quite close together
Hello! You could chop up the samples using a DAW if you want or you could chop the samples on your phone (even something as simple as a voice memos app). Those would be my suggested approaches! And you will likely still need to edit the samples on the PO-33 once they are loaded because the PO-33 does not always do the best job at detecting transients!
@@GarHoover that's cool I was hoping you had a tip to do it solely on the po but that's fine I'll chop it and upload something. I want to make a few backup audio files with samples already set up for beginners and so I quickly change samples myself.
Gotcha, you could hit pause and play to assign each melodic sample to a different melodic bank and then put all of the chords on in one drum bank, the river sample in another drum bank, and then record all of the drums in one drum back. Thats how I put all of the samples all the samples on my PO-33. I create the samples and I press play while holding record on my PO-33 to capture the sample and release the record button before the next sample begins.
I really love the video, thanks so much! I have a question though, at 5:55 you 'removed the river from the track'. I THINK what you did was play a snippet of the river sound from the same drum bank as the original river sound, stopping the original drum sound since the PO can only play a single sound from the same drum bank. Is that right? How did you create the river sound snippets? I know when you RECORD a sound into a drum bank it will chop it up, but it looks like you copied the original river sound. How? Thanks again!
Gareth Evans Hello! Yes I used a snippet of the river sound to “choke” or stop the river sample from carrying all the way through. I used the trim settings under “FX” to make the sample as long as I wanted and then created a very very short snippet of the sound to choke it using the trim setting as well!
Hello! You can use a 3.5 mil. to 1/4 inch cable or a converter if you want to connect it to your scarlett. I use a 1/4 inch cable with a 3.5mil. converter to plug my PO-33 into my interface.
Great video ! But could anyone tell me how to put these free samples in my PO33 ? (like a video with a tutorial for this ?) I just got this beautiful device, but I really struggle with the basic features. Thanks for your answers !
Hello! The easiest way to upload the samples will be to use an aux cord connected to either your phone or laptop which is plugged into the input of your PO-33. Next, pick the sample from the pack that you want on your PO-33 by lining up the play head on your phone or laptop right before the beginning of the sample and then you will need to hold down record and the bank (melodic or drum) you want a sample to go into and then press play on your phone or laptop and when the sample is done let go of record on the PO-33 and it should be in the bank you selected!
@@GarHoover Thanks a lot man, it helps ! I thought I could download every sound in its right bank (melodic or drum) in one "take", but I'll follow your advice and place each sample one at a time, like you say. Thanks again, that's very helpful !
Hello! Each sample should be assigned to its own bank! One shot melodic samples each go in their own melodic bank, all drums are sampled together into one drum bank, all chords are sampled into one drum bank, and the river sample is placed in its own drum bank!
Sorry for the delayed response I was moving across the country! I recorded all of the chords into 1 drum bank and then I needed to trim each of the samples on the PO-33 to make sure they were the full length of the chord and started at the beginning of the chord. It takes a little work but thats the most effective way to handle the chords.
Absolutely! This may sound tedious but you will need to record each sample (except the drums, chords, and river) into individual melodic banks on the PO-33. I prefer recording these in by using an aux cable instead of recording using the built in mic. What you will do is hold down the record button and whatever melodic bank you would like to record the sound into and then you will play the sample from the computer/phone and the PO-33 will record the sample and place it in the bank you selected. For the drums, chords and river, you will select the one of the eight drum banks and hold down record just like the melodic bank, but when it comes to the drums, chords, and river, record every sample for that specific instrument all at once and the PO-33 will chop up the samples and assign one to each of the 16 pads! You can then trim each of the samples to suit you! Hope this helps! If not, please feel free to ask me to clarify!
@@GarHoover thanks for your detailed reply. Also I was a bit puzzled how you got the chords and the stream into the drum section but then I figured it out with trimming. Great video!
It definitely has a learning curve to it and has a strange workflow at times but keep at it! And if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them! ALSO I have more tutorials on my channel in the "Pocket Operator Tutorial" Playlist so be sure to check those out!
I made a .WAV backup file if anybody is interested. I tried to keep it as close to how he had his PO set up. There is also a backup of a setup I find a bit more useful which you can try. Basically just moved the guitar plucks to a drum bank (slot 13) and can be switch out into the melodic bank (slot 4) as needed and the chords are all on the melodic bank (slots 5 to 6). Please do your own research on how to do backups and restoring before you do anything. i don't take any responsibility for you blowing your ears out listening to the .wav files or losing your samples. @@GarHoover Likewise. Main goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to follow one of the better tutorials out there for the po-33. Also only thing missing from how you had it is the 80s synth is missing as it wasnt in the sample sound and i couldn't pull a good sample from the video but you didn't end up using it anyway.
The river sample is in a drum bank. I extended the sample on one pad so that it holds out once it is triggered and then I use a small snippet of the river sample from another pad to choke the sample so it doesn’t carry on!
@@GarHoover oh, that makes sense! i always forget you can edit the length of an individual chop. i was just wondering how i would go about choking like this. thank you for the quick response!

@9:40 I had no idea you could do this!
Yes! It’s crucial for keeping grooves tight!!
Having all the samples in the same key you can also pitch them a full octave up and down too if you wanna switch it up for a section!
damn....I just pressed SUBSCRIBE again.... but was already ...
this. was. dope. Thanks so much and God bless you!!
Thank you and you’re welcome! I’m happy to help! I have other tutorials if you want to learn more!
@@GarHoover Will do! I have some of them queued, that I plan to check out after I finish working on a new track!
Thanks man! This is suuuuuuper helpful!
When I go to record the melody chords. I get some really off notes on the others any help on what I'm doing wrong?
GREAT LESSON !!!
I want to make a lo fi beat too , so I got my PO137 (which is a Rick and Morty version of PO35) , but I can't layer things that much like you. I can only make a drum beat layer and one layer of melodic stuff , is it the limitation of PO137(or PO 35)?
thankyou very much!!!
I do not own a PO-35, so I do not know the limitations of it. From what I heard people perform on the PO-35, it seems that you can have the drums and one melodic sample at a time. I wish I could help!
@@GarHoover never mind! thankyou for your reply! KEEP GROOVING!
awesome man! Thanks for sharing :D
Hey thanks man!
Hey man, I recently got a PO -33 for christams and was wondering if you could
make a tutorial on how to put the samples in the PO-33.
Great tutorial BTW!
Congrats! Yes! I'd be happy to make a tutorial explaining my process!
Let me know if this works!
Whoa po sounding like an mpc!
Thank You! Yeah, the PO-33 can definitely get into MPC territory!
Love your tutorials !
And your songs are amazing 🥰
How do you connect your po33 with your Mac and logic ?
Gar Hoover thanks! Will give it a try
Great video! thank you!
You’re welcome! I’m happy to help!
Great job dude!! Super helpful.
ErictheGreat That’s great to hear! I glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks a lot !!
Great tutorial thanks
Glad it was helpful! I have more tutorials on my channel if your thinking about making different genres on the PO-33!
@@GarHoover Super Thanks!!! You've got some incredible talent. Good Luck with all your new videos. I'll be watching.
You are the man thank you!!!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching! Let me know if you have any questions about the PO-33! I'm happy to answer them!
Thank you very much
Very cool! Wondering if it's too complicated for a 12 year old? Was thinking of getting him a po-33 ko for christmas.
Hello! There are certain parts of the PO-33 that might be require some teaching to understand the basics but I'm sure that once they get the hang of it they would have a lot of fun! The built in mic makes it easy to sample whatever they want and I know I would've enjoyed a PO-33 when I was 12!
Great tutorial! I couldn't get how you loop the first step (the river background)
Thank You Sir!!
super inspirador! gracias bro!
Great video but i have a question. Can you load the sample of a single note and build chords with it like pressing 3 or 4 buttons at the same time?
Or maybe it could be possible to sample all the chords of a certain key and make a progression with them
Unfortunately each melodic track is monophonic but you can have four voices playing on the PO-33 at once.
@@GarHoover thanks
Thank you ;)
Looking forward to your next video about the PO!
Thanks!
Haha lets go! Its always fun to impress people with little synths and samplers like the PO-33!!!
@@GarHoover yep yep that's how I did it but it was a bit fiddly to get the exact end right so I'm going to cut up and resample them
@@GarHoover sorry to bother you but did you just drop the 2 chords into 1 drum slot then let it split it up automatically?
This is great!
Thank you! I hope it helps you grow in your skills on the PO-33! Feel free to check out my other tutorials from the PO-33 that look at other genres!
Ooosom work bruh
Hey, Thank you!
How should i record all 39sec on the button 9? It’s showing only 23secs
you have to erase ALL sounds
I have a scarlett, I want my pocket to sound in my speakers, what kind of cables do I need?
Good morning and thanks!
Hello! You can use a 3.5 mil. to 1/4 inch cable or a converter if you want to connect it to your scarlett. I use a 1/4 inch cable with a 3.5mil. converter to plug my PO-33 into my interface.
How do you add the sample to the po33 I can't figure it out
I got my PO a year ago from a friend and never used it until now, and I'm so confused
Amazing!
i didnt found the 80s synth with resonance in the sample and also the po33 cuts the record of the river :(
Great video !
Hopefully this helps! I definitely need to make a full video describing the process!
@@GarHoover Thanks a lot man, it helps ! I thought I could download every sound in its right bank (melodic or drum) in one "take", but I'll follow your advice and place each sample one at a time, like you say.
Thanks again, that's very helpful !
Is a "vertical row" same as a column? :-)
Yup!
Do I just sample the whole thing to one group or does everything go into there own group
Hello! Each sample should be assigned to its own bank! One shot melodic samples each go in their own melodic bank, all drums are sampled together into one drum bank, all chords are sampled into one drum bank, and the river sample is placed in its own drum bank!
@@GarHoover so how do I get the chords working
Sorry for the delayed response I was moving across the country! I recorded all of the chords into 1 drum bank and then I needed to trim each of the samples on the PO-33 to make sure they were the full length of the chord and started at the beginning of the chord. It takes a little work but thats the most effective way to handle the chords.
Thanks gary
You’re welcome! I’m happy to help!
Can you explain how do you copy the samples from your file to PO? thanks

@@kaidubois4502 this is great, thank you. Do you have any other po33 backups?
I don't understand how you're choking the sound at 5:00. Did you copy it to a drum pad? If so, how is it choking the melodic pad?
The river sample is in a drum bank. I extended the sample on one pad so that it holds out once it is triggered and then I use a small snippet of the river sample from another pad to choke the sample so it doesn’t carry on!
@@GarHoover oh, that makes sense! i always forget you can edit the length of an individual chop. i was just wondering how i would go about choking like this. thank you for the quick response!
