I've owned jeeps forever, but I've got to tell you my ZR2 is FANFUCKINGTASTIC! It keeps up with Rubicons on the trails PLUS
It hauls all my camping gear and fishing gear plus plenty of firewood. However the ZR2 really out shines the Jeep ON road. If you have to use your rig as a daily driver too the ZR2 is lightyears ahead.
Not mention a 4” lift is only 2k and you’re destroying that over priced pos off road to
Payload alone makes the canyonrado the king. Those are beastly little vehicles @ 30mpg!
Scott L Huh? Max payload on a Canyon is 1592. It’s 1600 on a gladiator. Max towing on this ZR2 is 5000. My Gladiator is nearly 7,700.
MK4vDubbin actually, for 2020, the Dmax, NON ZR2, Raydo is rated at 7700# towing.

The ZR2 is so much better… it gives options: if you want protection at the cost of approach

It isn't. Bought my Zr2 new for just under $40k
Chuck Cribbs exactly! I have a 2017 Frontier Pro-4x I love it, it has all the nice on a truck. Leather seats, heated seats, heated mirrors sun roof everything but has all the good stuff for off road. Engine is solid and it’s all around amazing truck.
Welcome to 2020. What isn't expensive these days?
@@MrMcGiblets1 Is yours a Bison?
I love jeeps but the Gladiator that I saw at the dealership last week had a sticker of 81k and change. Thats nuts. For the difference in price I would get the Bison, add a 5 inch lift and 37 inch tires and probably still be less than the jeep. I still wish jeep would bring back the scrambler.
One Bison, to go please.
Coming down the hill on 13:49 as well! You guys are amazing thank you for stopping and talking to me! 😍😍
I just bought a new ZR2! First brand new vehicle. Have a 96 Tacoma short box regular cab. Also have a 2010 Tundra also short box regular cab. Haven't had a GM since my 96 GMC Silverado. I do a lot of off roading (no mudding or bashing) and more often than not I pull my little offroad trailer. My wife and I camp almost every weekend in the Canadian Rockies and we get a lot of use out of our trucks and have become somewhat Toyota loyal. Needless to say I was actually a bit apprehensive looking at a Chev but I read a ton of reviews I test drove the ZR2 and was really impressed. I got a white one with the bed bar and lights and of course it had to have the same engine I test drove, the little turbo dmax. I get my truck on Tuesday. So excited! 😀😀😀
Daniel Quistberg same here I was always a Tacoma guy. I just got a new Canyon Denali and a absolutely love it. I’m 6.4 and I love all the leg room. I’ve had 5 Tacos over the years and every time they give it an update they get cheaper made. Toyota is living off the rep of the old ones like your 96. They would outlast the whole body and keep running.
When speaking off road, you can’t just focus on engine output with regards to torque. Transmission gear ratios, transfer case reduction and axle ratio all play a part in determining torque at wheel. The Jeep has a 4:1 t-case vs. 2.72 for the Chevy.
And the Pentastar has an unbelievably flat torque curve (one of the flattest in the industry). As such, torque at the wheels and controllability should be perfect.
@@corystansbury More horsepower than torque? That is as wrong as you get for a Jeep!
@@scarhart53 my diesel ZR@ (after tune) dynos at 240 hp and 450 lb/ft.
You didn't show the Off-road display or even that it is activated on the 2, 4H, 4L selector. That display also shows pitch and roll angles like the Jeep.
That camera washing mechanism needs to go on every vehicle with a backup camera. lol
Except that the squirter mechanism only is only on the front trail camera. Wierd
@@simonnystrom8137 you said squirter 😂😆😄. Sorry I'm a big kid.
If you guys didn't get the hint at the end, They chose Chevy but did not directly say it. They are filming in MOAB and participating in the Easter Jeep Safari in MOAB so... TFL cannot simply and directly say that the Chevy Bison is the better buy here. (Hint = Roman changing his Jeep shirt to a Chevy shirt at the end)
Yep, they both tapped the Bison.
Every truck will have advantages/disadvantages. We all knew what was going to happen with the lines taken when testing the departure etc. Both are nice rigs, just drive em’ knowing their limitations and that’s when they will both truly shine in different scenarios. It’s like comparing a short wheel base jeep to a long wheel base - we all know the deal. Great to see the protection doing its job. Nice video - cheers 🍻👍
For once I'd like to see a test on these types of trucks in the east in the forests and the mud instead of sand and rock.
That has more to do with tires than the truck’s capability. Doing off roading obstacles is a better indicator of off road capability

Agreed. Then put 35-37" tires on it. Unstoppable...
If your going to leave it stock, ZR2 (non bison) is the best choice. If you want big lifts you know Jeep will be the path.
daren s Jeep doesn’t even need a lift. Clears 37’s bone stock easily,
If the price would be similar one would have to think before choosing. Much better value in the ZR2.
Maybe at launch, but the jeep would have a better resale value.

Chevy wins, love the Zr2 and the Diesel. Could live without the Bison package. For the ridiculous price of that Jeep you could get a 2500HD Duramax.
Prices are absolutely insane on most new vehicles. You guys didn't give any opinions or winner?
I think it’s hard for them to say at a $10,000 dollar difference and both working for Jeep. That the Chevrolet diesel wins hands down!

TFL >>> you have no idea how invaluable your vehicle reviews are to me and the rest of the public; we are very grateful for all of the time and effort that you all at TFL do to bring this footage to us, thank you, thank you, thank you! Obviously, the ideal situation for when one is considering the purchase of a new vehicle is to be able to view and test drive the vehicle in person. However, even with a test drive there are a lot of things that one will be unable to learn; here's where you guys come in ... thanks to your testing of vehicles in their respective elements we get to learn a great deal more than we ever could with any ordinary test drive. By viewing a certain vehicle in different videos that you have prepared one is able to get a very good idea about the pluses and minuses of a vehicle. Allow me to elaborate ... me myself upon viewing the Jeep Gladiator at a car show I was quite impressed. But I am obviously at a disadvantage with the manufacturer who makes sure that their vehicle is positioned "just so" and the lighting is perfect and the stance, etc. an attendee at such an event has no chance ;-) Then the more I got to see this vehicle reviewed, the more I could see unappealing aspects of it. In the case of other vehicles it was the opposite, I ended up developing an appreciation for something that I had initially thought was not so good, or that I had no particular interest in. So ... believe me, what you guys at TFL do is very, very invaluable and we are very very grateful to all of your efforts and presentations; because no matter whether we agree with your comments and reviews or not, we are learning a great deal thanks to you. So once again, I thank you TFL team for all of your time and effort that you put into bringing us this wonderful material, you guys are awesome! ;-)
I love my ZR2. I'm glad I didn't wait for the Gladiator. I think it looks cool, but a little funny. Also, 63,000 is way too much. I got a midnight edition with the sports bar and lights for 42K. No way I'm spending that much on a truck that can't compare to a Raptor.
Can the Raptor rock climb? You're debating apples and oranges Jeeves.
I mean in terms of rock climbing and off roading it’s honestly better. Raptor looks nicer but for a raptor with the same features you’re talking 72k almost 80 with tax. I got my zr2 for 41k brand new.

Marshall Williams The big problem would be the price. If I couldn't justify the price for the Bison ( which I can't) then that goes double for what Jeep would demand for a J6 spec'd out to match. The way FCA's finance's look like lately, you know darn well they wouldn't discount anything in the Wrangler line, especially if it's got a Rubicon badge slapped on its ass. Jeep and Ram are the only things FCA'S got that's making them money.
Make it happen Jeep and it better not cost 50k in Canada
THats why Id get the sport with no options. No power locks windows backup camera or anything. That right there would be on par with a jlu or a gladiator of the same specs. $35k
I am with you on all this except the manual, would love a manual but paired with the 3,6 it is no good .Jeep has ruined the manual experience .
Leaf springs in the back instead off coils and you have me sold
Remember Roman gears multiply torque. Horsepower is the rate work is done. torque is NOT always what you need when 4x4ing. Thats why you have a two speed transfer case. Try some soft dune sand in 4 low vs 4 hi to see the major difference.
You just touched on one of my major pet peeves. Folks, in an engine that's turning, horsepower and torque are intimately related. At each and every rpm, from bogged down below idle to way off the top of redline, your engine makes torque. Take that torque (in foot-pounds), multiply by the rpm you're turning at that instant, and divide by 5252. That gives you the horsepower you're making. There are 52 cards in a deck, so it's an easy number to remember.
People that think "it has plenty of horsepower but not enough torque" are really saying "I need (or need to use!) a lower gear".
Remember, kids - a 2010-2015 Prius has 500 ft-lbs but only 150 HP. It's not doing big, smokey burnouts, is it? (The electric motors make max torque at zero rpm...)
I will admit that a "peaky" engine, one that makes max torque near redline, isn't pleasant to drive. But I'll maintain that what people casually call a "torquey" engine is really just one that won't keep making torque as it revs. A good and very readable discussion is at www.epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/power_and_torque.htm
In the U.K. you can buy the JL with a 2.2 Diesel with 197bhp and 332lb/ft of torque.
So? How's she doing on the Ike gauntlet fully loaded?
That's because in Murcia diesels do not compute. Especially after Volkswagon.
What is JL?
As a Toyota Owner... i can say.... Yota has to step up their Off road game...
I thought the bison was already spendy af for a mid sized, FCA, "hold my beer!"
Seems to me almost every new truck is massively overpriced.

You guys always forget about the Rubicon having a 4:1 low range, that makes a big difference when crawling. Great episode though!
Sure, it has a good low range. But at what point do the front CV joints give out from being locked, turned, flexed, and in low range.
Low range is only really important when you need more torque.
Both of these in low range have enough to climb a wall.

@@johnarcher9480 Jeep has been using 4:1 low ranges since 2002, no real issues. The 4:1 really comes in handy when you go to larger tires, and to give better control when crawling at low speeds.

WGAS whether you can take the doors and roof off!! For that money a Raptor is the only choice. Now for 35-40, the ZR2 is a solid option.
$63k is only the launch edition. the Gladiator starts at $34k and the Rubicon is like $45k I think.
David Kutschke Yeah but that 45k is no options. You will get to 60 real quick. The ZR2 only comes loaded. You can get a base Colorado for 28k
Move that exhaust out I'd the way and put the spare in the bed then change the front bumper to the standard zr2 bumper and it'll clear tons more.
Wouldn't you just buy a zr2 at that point? The bison was made for overlanding and not hardcore rock crawling. The armor is just so you make it home at the end of the day.
@@aaron5222 exactly. I'd rather get a normal zr2 and buy the plates to add on rather than the bison and take off the bumper. But they had a bison in the video and getting rid of that bumper would be best thing for them with what they had

For $10k you could get a pair of nice dirbikes to throw into the back of the Colorado.... or a small travel trailer to park at a nearby campground. I would take the Chevy.
I have a 18' Colorado in Z71 trim that would do that trail without a problem though. Paid $32,500 OTD for it new. Removed the airdam and added sliders and skids for about $650. I will wait until I rip off the bumpers before buying some. I would not make the wife angry that way! lol

Great video. Both amazing trucks that performed equally well.
most people that go crawling usually pick a line that doesnt go straight down something that they might get caught up on.. if you use the articulation the vehicle has then you can go with minimal scrapes and dragging
As a former tactical motor vehicle operator/instructor, I agree. Articulation also isn't quite as important with traction-aided diffs at both ends, as military HMMWVs have shown with their torque-biasing diffs and full independent suspensions. Taking those approaches and departures at an angle, where possible, would minimize the scraping. One just has to be more careful to not roll.
Good video. The new Gladiator is awesome! Cameras and removable roof are nice to have but the ZR2 is the best bang for the buck off roader on the market right now.

I own a Wrangler JL along with another primary daily driver vehicle, a Ford Expedition. I would not recommenced a Jeep JL/Gladiator if its going to be your only vehicle or daily driver. The upright windshield and solid front axle make for a harsh ride on roads above 55mph. The Jeep is a specific purpose vehicle. The Chevy is a more versatile vehicle and a better bang for the buck.
I feel like, if they don't exist already, someone should invent a small, solid bar roller that goes inside the trailer hitch so that the truck rolls down the departure rather than scraping the hitch.
The Jeep may have less torque on paper, however, it does come with higher torque multiplication in form of a super low range transfer case (84:1 crawl ratio).
AEV release the video explaining the situations and limitations that Chevy put on them that limited approach angles and departure angles because of regulations.
My current 4wd is a Nissan Frontier Pro-4x. It's a capable truck but I can't justify using it to it's full offroad potential. I take the safe line or turn back if things get too rough going. That brings me to my point. I'm too stressed out piloting a $30k rig through serious obstacles. I was a lot happier wheeling my old, beat up
Price on both these are ridiculous especially the jeep when you can get a Power Wagon or Raptor for less or a Rebel for way less that's crazy.
In what world can you get a decent Raptor for cheaper than this? You can get a base model Raptor for less if you're lucky, but put anything on a Raptor and it jumps to $70K+...

Now as a new vehicle owner I hope that all this technology is made well and will last, but if we're being honest it probably won't because they design things to have an 'expected lifespan' and that's pretty short because the longer your vehicle runs the longer it will be until the vehicle manufacturers make money again from your new purchase.
dedalliance1 dedalliance1 again, same argument was made 20 years ago when “damn computers are running the motor, i want carburetors!”
Quality control is better than ever and cars are lasting longer than ever. 20 years ago Jeeps were not well made vehicles compared to today are you joking!!?!!?? Hahaha go drive a TJ or XJ of that era and compare it to a modern one.
Regardless these won’t be $2k in 20 years, and you’ll have missed out on 20 years of tech. I’ll keep driving my nice, modern, reliable vehicles with the best designs yet....
Way better review on these vehicles than Edmunds! Edmunds didn't even seem to know what they were talking about and contradicted themselves. TFL knows their stuff!!
Actual payload on the Glad Jeep is 1200 lbs or less depending on transmission choice.
Loved how Nathan kept shouting, "boron!" 😅
looks like fun! Especially when it's not your truck!
Boron is good for bumpers and skid plates. And that’s all it should be put in!! I’m saying this from 22 years as a fire rescue and first responder ⛑ it makes our job so much harder when they put it in the A pillars and B pillars. Of most new vehicles. The new jaws of life are amazing and will cut through anything except boron but vehicle manufacturers don’t seem to care 🤔☹️
Tall tires also make approach and departure angles better or worse as well.
Yup. Just saw a company post where they had a 45° departure on a gladiator because of the lift and tires. I can't remember who it was though... Maybe skyjacker?
@@USAFJUNKIE i know what you're talking about but can't remember the name as well...but what happened when someone else tested it gave them a bad departure angle
That exhaust tip ain't BORON @ 12:22
OUCH.
Also, the Winner is . . . . . ??????
2 door j6 and I'm sold. Not digging a 20 foot long jeep. Of course that's just an exaggeration
That ZR2 is bad ass
Great video. I think you guys should do a comparison video with the Bison again when the Wrangler diesel is available. However, I've thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and entertained per usual!
Keep it up!
Before buying my ZR2, I had a '12 JK Rubicon and my wife had a wonderful '14 Grand Cherokee Overland Diesel with ORII variable suspension. My Wrangler had the head replaced within 6 months but otherwise held up OK. Great off road, but a terrible vehicle on road. Back seat passengers, even in the 4-dr., are subjected to torture. ;) The JGC Diesel was an amazing vehicle, both on road and off and you couldn't find a better tow vehicle. Problem is that the Chrysler diesel emission control system just doesn't work. Ours built up so much soot that the engine caught on fire at about 50k miles. The DEF system in general is subject to constant problems on both the Jeep and the Ram 1500's. I'd only want the Gladiator with the diesel - but I'd never buy another Chrysler diesel. My ZR2 has been great. Comfortable to travel over the highway, OK towing, and great off road. Here's the vid on my ZR2 build. ruclips.net/video/EnLhbafX1n0/видео.html
Finally an exciting video TFL!!
ZR2 all year round!
