Excellent video with easy to follow instructions. The most important take away from this demonstration for me is, “..place the markers right at the very beginning” before commencing the first (purl) row. What an excellent idea. This will help to easily and readily identify each section when the first row is worked. 👍👍👍
I too am still swatcing cables. I have had to watch your videos over and over. The Q and A are fun to listen to, but I am a visual learner and this video really helped me. I do go to the forums, but still could not visualize what I needed to do. Thank you.
I have made top-down sweaters before (only baby sized), but I am finding it great fun to do this advanced class and perfect the fit for adult sweater. I am still in the calculation phase and I have to catch up to everyone. Suzanne's videos are always so useful.
Bonus for me watching this even though I'm not doing the KAL - I finally understand how to lift the bar for M1R and M1L without having to look it up each time. Maybe everyone else "gets" it when they first learn those increases, but your clear instruction and video made it click for me. Thank you!
You are awesome! Walking through the directions helps so much! All those tables in the book are very intimidating. I wish she had more photos in her book.
Huge huge help !!! I have had this book for a while but felt overwelmed by all the info ( I know that sound ridiculous) you cleared up a lot of the confusion and can't wait til 2morrow to get started again. Thank you
Laurie, you're not alone in feeling overwhelmed by all the info. I've knitted socks for 12 yrs but all the info for starting a sweater made by thinking process melt also being a visual learner hasn't helped. I decided to look at Suzanne's videos over & over with the book on my lap. It's OK if we take our time and I need plenty of time. We are all at different levels of knitting in this KAL. I think Suzanne realizes that and her moderators are great at answering questions. Maybe one arm, of my sweater, will be shorter than the other but learning the process is BIG for me. Knit on :-)
I have had this book for such a long time . This has helped understand it a little . Please please 🙂 do more tutorials for this book , I’m off to try and knit my first jumper . Only ever knitted socks before . 😳
@@SuzanneBryan yes I find them very useful, much appreciated. It helps so much visual instructions. Not quite sure how to add a funnel neck but I’m sure all will become clear.... I have just begun my first ever sweater
Thank you. I am not to the cast on yet (still working on my cable swatches), but this was a great video to clearly visualize the cast on. This has been such an enjoyable educational experience. I have learned new skills that will take my knitting to another level.
Thanks a lot Suzanne, I needed this video about Ann Butt's book so badly. I was probably overenthusiastic when I bought this book, because I had never made a top down sweater nor follow an explantation in English. When I read the book I realized that my English was not good enough to understand the finesses of the knitting vocabulary. But your very clear video saved me. And today I begin the cardigan ! So excited.
Great video and answered so many of my questions. I am getting ready to cast on so this was perfect timing. My only question is this: is there an easy way to keep track of the increase rows for the front panels and the raglans? Since the increases are a bit different, I didn’t want to get all confused as to which increases are done when. Thanks!!!
Not sure whether to ask this here or in Ravelry. I admit to being directionally challenged, can you explain why the first raglan neck increase at 13:25 is mr, slm, k1, ml then at 15:14 the increase is mr, k1, slm, ml and at 16:13 it is mr, slm, k1, ml and at 17:09 another mr, k1, slm, ml. Trying to understand this. Thank you!
exactly the same, just don't add the cables, work those stitches in your body stitch pattern instead. Like Stockinette or whatever your base stitch is going to be.
Hi Suzanne, I'm ready to knit row 4. If my total front center increases are 16 (from the 2 charts on page 81 of AB's book) do I wait to start the front cable until I've done 5 front center stitch increases before starting the cable? If I start the cable now, I would end up with 7 stitches between the cable and the front edge rather than 2 stitches like your video shows. If I wait, I will have the 2 stitches at the center front, but my cable will start lower on the fronts (which may or may not show behind the shawl collar). When do I start my front cables please?
Yes you wait until there are 11 left to do, then start. Be sure to subtract an inch worth of stitches for the 3" button band that you will be adding later. Happy knitting.
I need to say this: I have enjoyed Suzanne's vids. I learned a lot with the ITAG YOKE sweater. I am an intermediate knitter. I can knit a sweater in two weeks. I have ripped this sweater down so many times that it has taken me all summer to knit and I just ripped down the entire collar when I got to the last 1.5 inches of the button band because I was encountering a hole I couldn't get out of. If I were a beginner, this project would discourage me so much that I would not pick up needles again! You need to know that the shawl collar is extremely vague and searching through all of the Q& A vids over and over again doesn't get to it. I don't think anyone has a shawl collar start to finish tutorial that's instructive enough. This pattern is frustrating. I have looked at the ravelry groups, but there isn't anything there OR there isn't a direct enough link to find it there. OK, love you, but I think I"ll move on to another instructor.
Thank you for this video. I am a bit confused though. The set up row is also row 1 but you seem to be working both row 1 and row 2 from right to left. I thought all WS rows (this set up row) should be worked from left to right. In this case, the stitches would be the same either way. But that might not always be the case.
Hi Bonnie. When I knit, and I am working a RS row, I hold the needle that has all of the stitches in my left hand. The RS of the fabric is facing me. Then I use the right needle to work the stitched off of the left needle onto my right needle, from left to right. Then I turn the work and again hold the needle with all of the stitches on it in my left hand, but this time the WS of the fabric is facing me. I then use the right needle to work the stitches from the left needle, again, working from left to right. Does this help? Hugs and Happy Knitting.
What a great question. That is where the V-neck cardigan directions start. Prior to that are the directions for the pullover. This tutorial is about working a cardigan rather than a pullover. Ann Budd includes directions for both. If you are doing a cardigan, you just skip over the pullover sections and vice versa. Hope this helps.
@@SuzanneBryan that's not it After I saw you're videos with the book I got it for myself Pages 80 and 81 are for the v neck cardigan And on page 81 the top tab is the one you skip, its within the instructions for the v neck
Thank you for clarifying. Notice that the second chart (excluding orange chart at top of page) on page 81 starts out by saying "at the same time and beginning with the 2nd RS row". this implies that you will work this box and the box below concurrently with the bottom box on page 80 and the top box on page 81. Evidently I was not clear enough on that. I went there, because many people will knit for the bottom box on page 80, all the way through the top box on page 81 before they see the "at the same time". This was to prevent that from happening. I hope this helps you.

Adding detailed and clear instruction for sleeve and front cables, kind thanks! I could not figure them out on my own.

Yes, you can get this book on Amazon or any other book seller. look for the Author - Ann Budd. She has several really good books.
