THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS GUIDE OMG!! I was so confused reading patterns and watching other tutorials since they only demonstrate the technique and not how the whole thing works. You're a blessing for visual learners like me!
Thank you so much for this video explanation! I am a visual learner and loved your diagram. I also need to know the logic and overall why of a design before starting as the instructions don't make sense otherwise. I wish more people would teach this way!!!
I am right now knitting a sweater with short rows for the first time and I just wanna say thank you I now finally unterstand why there are short rows! It finally makes sense!
Often I see short rows mentioned and German short rows specifically but had no clue what they were or when they were used. You explained them perfectly. Bring on the short rows!
This made everything so clear, thank you so much! I’m an advanced beginner and am knitting my first cardigan and I encountered short rows for the first time. Every tutorial I’ve found hasn’t made any sense to me. Your video has been such a help!
This is fabulous! Thank you for the video. I had no idea what “short row” means in my sweater pattern, and this is really for my short row 101! Awesome and detailed explanation!
I was knitting a cardigan and didn’t like the shaping (formed by short rows) on the back lower half of the sweater. I did exactly as you show, drew out the rows to understand how that shape could be altered. It came out perfectly. This really helps understand short rows. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so very much . You have explained why we do them and how to . The best explanation I have seen so far. Not just how to do the actual short row method . I have been questioning when to to stop and when to pick up the short row. Everyone should watch this video .
Excellent explanation in order to get the big picture of what you’re trying to accomplish! This was so helpful for me- knitting short rows in a sweater for the first time! Thank you so much! I could even imagine your diagram as I was knitting the short rows!
Thanks for sharing! Your row differences between the garter and regular, without short rows, is ingenious. Perhaps that will work with any stitch patterns with similar compression.
I cannot begin to tell you how helpful your schematic was in explaining short rows so that I could understand the concept. There apparently was an error in the pattern that I am working and your drawing helped me understand how to fix it! thank you so much!
You got one more subscriber...!!! BRAVO...!!! This is the most logical way to process short rows...!!! Instead of having beginner knitters, and old ones too for that matter, to scramble their brains building the back of their whatever knitting and calculating to no end... No more despair...!!! Now, I have something else that I want to point out and you can express it better than I can and show it to your followers... And it is the top down sweater front knitting, in much the same way, for those seniors or "young ones" with a beer=belly... Love you and do keep on knitting and posting...!!!
This is the video I have been looking for lol I am not intimidated by short rows per se, but I do want to understand how to know where they should be and how they should look when done properly. Thanks for this video!
You are an excellent teacher, you explained detail and clearly with drawing picture, I watched so many videos about German short rows but I never can picture how it looked before I started even though with pattern. I like that you provided a little drawing with explaination of why ,how .I got confidence before I start because I know if I am doing right or wrong. Thank you so much and appreciated your show. ❤
This is by FAR the most helpful video I have found on short rows. As an ambitious beginner I had no clue at all as to what a short row was, what it was used for and how it appears in a pattern. Up to this point I have avoided patterns that include short rows. Notice that includes most sweaters, tees and even shawls. After viewing this video and the how to do a German short row I think I am ready to give it a Go. It may takes many attempts but at least I can now try knowing what they are actually for. Many thanks to the fiber artist who made this super helpful video ♥️
Can I just give you my heartfelt thanks?! I was so stumped by short rows - my pattern specified Japanese short rows til I learnt they could be interchangeable and I just could -not- wrap my head around them. Your instructions at the very beginning were my light bulb moment! I am saving this video for future reference! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Omg thank you. I want to pay you for this video bc this is the way I want to learn to knit (big picture first) but it is so hard to find online. New subscriber!
Wow thanks I really understood a lot more from your handy diagrams! It gives me a visual rightaway so I can imagine what the demonstration of short rows really do. I've seen some short row demonstrations but didn't quite know why people use it, but this explains it really well, thanks!
Thank you for this. I bought a pattern for a sweater and had never encountered short rows and it was heartbreaking for me since I couldn't figure out what I was doing. I don't want to let short rows scare me. This was very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I was desperate! I didn't need the Short Rows for the neck but for the underarm and the instruction was quite confusing...I will try now and hopefully it will work out!
I have been attempting to make a sweater with a raglan German Short rows and I’m determined to get this stitch pattern for my garment. I made up my mind to learn different techniques.
Thank you! Very nice informative video :) I would be helpful to have some more information on the amount of stitches that the short rows need to be spaced apart in different gauges and different places in the yoke.
Hi ! I was wondering : when you begin your short rows, how do you know where you start ? I mean at what stich ? Is there a rule ? How many stitches are there between each short row ?
I almost never comment on videos, but the I'm going through my first ever use of short rows and this was the only video that helped me understand. Was so close to giving up the project. Thank you so so much for such a clear explanation!
What I don't understand is, when purling do I make the raglan increases again? Or do I make the increases only on the right side of the work? Great video! ❤
Thank you for this video! I'm an intermediate knitter who learned knitting entirely via YT, so recently I was feeling I lack some kind of conceptual, fundamental knitting knowledge that lies underneath specific techniques and other practical skills. Like, I have already used short rows a couple of times while following a sock knitting pattern so I sort of know what they do/how I do them on a certain level. But I still don't know what exactly short rows are to begin with, precisely what they are for, what kind of effect they achieve, when knitters are supposed to consider using short rows, etc. Your video was exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks for all you teach, on a top down sweater with reglan sleeve, where exactly do I need to begin the short row, would that be before I reach the sleeves section in the round more towards the front , appreciate a replay, Thank you,
Thank you so much for this well explained technic. I wanted to cry because of my lack of knowledge in this area, it will still tack me some time to digest and then put in practice but you have given me the understanding I didn't have.Thank you Susan 🌺🌼🌸🌻
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS GUIDE OMG!! I was so confused reading patterns and watching other tutorials since they only demonstrate the technique and not how the whole thing works. You're a blessing for visual learners like me!
After watching your video I was able to incorporate short rows into a pattern where there weren’t any, and it was very successful. Thank you!
This is the best explanation I have found so far!
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful.
Thank you so much for this video explanation! I am a visual learner and loved your diagram. I also need to know the logic and overall why of a design before starting as the instructions don't make sense otherwise. I wish more people would teach this way!!!
I am glad the diagram made it a bit clearer :D
I am right now knitting a sweater with short rows for the first time and I just wanna say thank you I now finally unterstand why there are short rows! It finally makes sense!
Thank you! That's exactly how I imagine the neck shaping, you explain it so clearly
Best explanation of short rows!! And I’m heading directly to the tutorial for German short rows in the round. 🙏🙏🙏
Often I see short rows mentioned and German short rows specifically but had no clue what they were or when they were used. You explained them perfectly. Bring on the short rows!

Thank you! I am glad this was helpful to you.
This made everything so clear, thank you so much!
I’m an advanced beginner and am knitting my first cardigan and I encountered short rows for the first time.
Every tutorial I’ve found hasn’t made any sense to me. Your video has been such a help!
What a fun thought: using stockinette instead of short rows to increase length. I love that! Thanks for this!
This is exactly the explanation I was looking for. I had trouble visualizing how the short rows work. Thank you!
Finally, I see how short rows work, and why they are necessary. One of my huge mysteries in knitting has been solved. Thank you!
Absolutely comprehensive and user friendly explanation even for beginners!!!
This is fabulous! Thank you for the video. I had no idea what “short row” means in my sweater pattern, and this is really for my short row 101! Awesome and detailed explanation!
Thanks this is so helpful! I had no idea what short rows are for. Now I know and can approach my hat pattern with confidence!
You're right. I was intimidated by short rows because I didn't understand the logic behind it. Now I'm ready to make it. Thank you very much!! ❤
