I initially bought the X-H2 and then quickly sold that and went with the X-H2s. Besides the promise of very slightly better autofocus and dynamic range, I really didn’t want a ton of large file sizes taking up space on my memory cards or computer.
@@oxeneers Nope, still on Ver.3.00. Didn’t seem like it had anything but a couple of minor bug fixes, so I am not in a rush for that one. Next time I connect my phone to the camera, I’ll do it I guess. Still learning how to best deal with the PASM dial. Takes some getting used to after having used the X100s, X-T3, and X-Pro3 for the last 10 years.
same here - so many peolpe on the internet say, that the xh2 is a no brainer if u do more stills and same for the xh2s if u do more videography work... but I have to say, that the xh2S is the perfect stills cam in my opinion: great for every usecase incl. wildlife and sports. The xh2 is amazing but lacks a bit afc when doing wildlife whereas the "more" resolution isnt realy a big thing for landscape and portrait

The differences are so small no client is ever going to tell, and certainly wouldn't be able to pick out one or the other in a double blind test. I think if you *need* more detail than the X-H2s can give you, then the logical step would be GFX rather than higher mpix APSC .
Totally well said. You’re exactly right! I do enjoy the recomposing power of being able to crop a lot but the X-H2s is definitely marginally better in low light.
But why not go to the X-H2 in the first place if you're a stills shooter ? Why bother with the 2s ? In fact, it's a better compliment to have alongside the GFX .
@Steven Bamford Faster sensor readout speed and better High ISO performance are more of an advantage than 14 extra mpix. And I'm a video shooter as well so the XH2s is the better choice for me, but doesn't give much away for stills either.
@greggpedder Sensor speed on the X-H2 isn't a slouch, and the iso is marginal .If you can get a higher resolution, why not ? Especially for landscape, architecture, and studio.

Hey Dylan, thanks for doing this and thanks for repping Flickr! (Flickr doesn't get the amount of love and respect it should!). I just wanted to report that I have been keeping an eye on this issue, and I agree with your findings (despite not owning the cameras). How can 40mp NOT be better, BUT... how MUCH better is another thing, and your final shot with the headphones I think showcases something interesting. As it has been manually focused, the bokeh balls are actually different sized and this TINY bit of focus inaccuracy can really inflate the results between the two cameras. You got lucky in some ways that the XH2 landed focus better on the ear foam than the XH2S did, otherwise it could well have looked like the XH2S resolved this shot better! But all the other shots, time and time again it was close but the XH2 got the nudge. But... I'm sure a tiny nudge of +5 texture, +10 sharpening (on the XH2S) would have put them on par, and how much larger are these 40mp files? And what are things looking like at 1600 and 3200 ISO? Does a switch happen at all and the XH2S starts winning a little more on the low light/higher ISO IQ field? As an XT4 owner I am a little disappointed with the releases from Fuji this year. I was hoping that the XH2 resolution would be significant, but it feels really ever so slight, to the point that it might actually be a step backwards if we consider file sizes and low light/higher ISO IQ. I shall likely pass on 2022 Fuji offerings and start saving for XH3's or Xpro4's.. Thanks again, yours is the first A/B done well imo. The others have too many variables and even ever so slight difference in focus obtained makes the results practically invalid and I suspect this is the main cause of trouble.
Yes!! What's your Flickr page, I'd love to follow you!! Interesting thoughts. The lens is so finicky and a weird one to begin with, I'm not surprised to see issues. Like I said, it was on the same manual focus "hatch mark" and the tripod didn't move but you never know. Weird. And yes, I've run through my X-H2s shots through Topaz noise and sharpening and even the Gigapixel and it gets into the same ballpark as the X-H2. But I hate using that software as I find it clunky and interrupts my workflow. But you're 100% right there. You can get the results. As an X-T4 owner, I hear you. It's a weird pathway to "upgrade". I kind of liken it to being a phone user, you won't get the new generation of phone/handset each year, but every 2 years (or generations), it might be worth the upgrade. I think that's where X-T4 owners are at right now - waiting for the next generation since your current camera is so strong. I appreciate all your thoughts man and insightful comment. There was a great controversy when the 36mp FF cameras came along as well. A lot of people couldn't see the difference between them and the 24mp cameras. 5 years later and here we are again. Except now nobody questions that 45mp's is what you need for FF and 60 is better. Wonder what changed? (Same thing will happen with the APS-c 40mp sensors.) Good demonstration, I wouldn't have used the lenses wide open, but you demonstrated the increase in resolution with the 40mp's. Pixel peeping, yeh, no point in buying a 40mp Fuji. But when you print your images, the increase in IQ becomes apparent really quickly.
Interesting thoughts! There's always controversy in the "megapixel race" (we still call it that?) these days it seems. We are humans, cyclical creatures, haha. Back again. The ability to shoot in 8k Prores LT then come back home and apply stabilization (with hotshoe gyro data) and crop, then still have an oversampled 4k video is the key to my decision to keep the H2 over H2S, 40MP still and 8k video just give you so much room for post for your final product.
Nice man! Both are awesome cameras. Pretty much all cameras in 2022/23 are awesome cameras. We are all (including - especially me) being too picky sometimes! I still have old Canon 10D files that I have blown up to 30, 40 inches that were shot in good light... so yeah. I am super guilty of buying all these new cameras. ALTHOUGH - the difference in GFX is a heavy-hitter. Going back to non-gfx files can be depressing sometimes! HA!
Yep exactly!! We are definitely too picky. Like I said - it's a wild time to be alive, right? We have all this incredible technology and we're guilty of sitting here pixel peeping and overanalyzing this stuff. But, for me, that's the fun part too haha. I talked to a CMOS engineer the other day and he was telling me just how wild stacked sensors are and the engineering that goes into it - and here we are testing these marvels of engineering side-by-side with photos of shit on my desk hahaah! Wild times. And yes, to your GFX point, there's nothing else like it. I pick up my GFX and get blown away EACH time with the results. Spoiled rotten we are :)

@@oxeneers I’m hoping Fuji will deck it out with “street camera” in mind. Skip the lcd completely and put max effort into the OVF/EVF. Throw on a f-ing flash onboard and sync it fast. Stabilized with fast focus. If I’m not mistaken the newer Fuji lenses that handle the 40 mpx are also bigger…not good for street…hence the hope for 26 mpx lol. And…I want really really good slo-mo video…stabilized, 4K, 120. Oh, and lastly, I want Fuji to bake RAW files with film simulations as an output. Not asking much right? lol

Yeah, I hear you. And with the manual focus lens issue, it's interesting since they are both on the same tripod with the same quick release plate and the same aperture and focus mark. So, who knows. Could be something with the sensor difference? Likely not but interesting nonetheless. And yes, the cropping advantage is panned by many people (especially here on YT) but I find it incredibly useful to keep "as much" resolution as possible.
I own Fuji's and love them. It is, no matter what, a brand that is putting the "film" back in Fuji Film. In that sense, it is an old-school novelty camera. But I think this shoot-out misses the larger points of doing a real functional comparison (vs. just doing pixel peeping with a non-Fuji lens that can't be seen on YT anyway due to poor resolution) and what each camera is intended for and the associated use cases. The Fujifilm X-H2 is for still and video shooters (e.g., wedding shooters) and is in the "hybrid" class of cameras (still + vid) that the industry now uses as a class of low-end cameras. Sony has owned this space for a while with fast focus, etc. as well as the high-end video space. That is the real story along with the video side of things and dual cards, head monitor jack, HDMI out, etc.
This was filmed almost immediately after the releases. I am not an in-depth review channel and do not claim to be. But I agree with you. At the time of filming, there were not many other true "pixel peeping" videos showing the X-Trans V HR vs X-Trans V HS.
I really like your videos so keep them coming! I heard one channel on YT say about this issue "Fuji has drawn a line in the sand. There are cameras for still and cameras for video." Well put.
I bought the XH2 because I needed a second camera That is compatible with all my X mount lenses. I had the choice between a 1800€ XT4 to complement my x-s10 or higher mp camera. I did not wanted the h2s because I had already a 26mp in my x-s10. Bought Xh2 + 33mm 1.4 for the Price of the xh2 only on black friday si great deal for me. + The ergonomics of H2 is more lookalike of the X-S10 which is like a little brother.Would be a lot différent learning curve if I had xt series camera + x-s10
You did well! The X-H2 is incredible man. The X-S10, like many have investigated here on YT, is actually the weaker Fujifilm camera in the lineup. This is because the IBIS is not as strong (not just on the spec sheet, but in practice) as the X-T4 or X-H2 series. Really great video Dylan! Funny enough I have done a ton of comparisons between the 23mp files of the X-H1 and the 45mp files of the Nikon Z7. Similar results and thoughts. The Z7 had more detail, but it was so incredibly slight, and in the end I was always left being like… doesnt seem worth it. Very helpful to me though, I think I'm at the crossroads of go XH2s for video work, or go Sony 🤷♂
I think for video, you would be better off with the X-H2s. Something that's not often talked about a lot is the heft/weight/size of Sony FE lenses (the 3rd party options can be lighter for sure). You already have a hefty kit with the GFX, something more lightweight like the X-H2s and respective lenses would balance out that "kit" nicely. Just a thought!!

I have the 30mm Macro and have used it on both but have been very impressed with the X-H2 results, not so much with the X-H2s. But I should do a comparison of those too!
@@oxeneers Just watched, and as soon as you spoke about the 30mm macro.. 😁 Definitely would like to see that comparison 👍 and was wondering how the 30mm, 33 1.4, 56 1.2 WR/II would do as they were developed with this 40mp sensor in mind IIRC. Even the 150-600mm, being one of the newest - I haven't done a deep dive on these but I believe that resolves similar detail to the existing 100-400 (which was also close to the 70-300). I've recently settled on getting into the Fuji X system (balancing size/weight/perf/value) and leaning toward X-H2 as I'm mainly about stills, though, if the H2S price gap was closer I'd probably tip toward that (fast readout & full-sensor 20+ ES bursts). Possibly even the X-T5, with those silver & black good looks and dials, if it shared the buffer size and/or EVF of the H2/S.
@@fusion-frosty I think between the X-H2 and X-T5, the X-H2 is the better camera unless you obsess over the dials. I hate the flip out screen but I've adjusted. The EVF alone is worth it - and I rarely used it because I hated the typical shitty EVF that's on most cameras. @@oxeneers Yeah X-H2 is clearly specced better, I'd already decided to go X-H2/S for those reasons (better EVF, buffer, comfy & stabler grip), I should've used parenthesis on the X-T5 comment: IF the X-T5 had the EVF and/or buffer I'd be tempted + I do like the tactile dials (or at least having 3 programmable 📐 dials as w/the Canon bodies I've used). I certainly wouldn't mind X-H2S with it's silent, faster ES readout & un-cropped 20-40 FPS bursts either! But the H2 is a good base to start with I think, then maybe an H3/4/5 S down the line.. Now if they could add A7R V's all tilting, flipping & rotating screen too in future.. I'll check your vid on my TV tonight! But definitely interested in some head-head detail comparisons of the 40mp vs. X-H2S (or X-T4 as I've seen elsewhere) using those new generation lenses 30 2.8, 33 1.4, 56 1.2 II. Yes you can see the difference, 40 mp are more pinsharp over 26/24mp. Even 8 k you can see the difference over 4k. Try and compare those modes over reality. Quite easely 8k are closer to reality. You need a large HD monitor to see it more clearly.
Agreed. I use an ASUS 4K ProArt display and it's very clear to me - and yet, many people in online Fujifilm circles say "There is no difference". Sorry, but like you said, there IS a difference. Thanks for your thoughts!!

Really great video Dylan! Funny enough I have done a ton of comparisons between the 23mp files of the X-H1 and the 45mp files of the Nikon Z7. Similar results and thoughts. The Z7 had more detail, but it was so incredibly slight, and in the end I was always left being like… doesnt seem worth it. Very helpful to me though, I think I'm at the crossroads of go XH2s for video work, or go Sony 🤷♂
I think for video, you would be better off with the X-H2s. Something that's not often talked about a lot is the heft/weight/size of Sony FE lenses (the 3rd party options can be lighter for sure). You already have a hefty kit with the GFX, something more lightweight like the X-H2s and respective lenses would balance out that "kit" nicely. Just a thought!!

Great video. Do you have the 80mm macro? I ould be interested to see how it performs on each of the cameras.
I have the 30mm Macro and have used it on both but have been very impressed with the X-H2 results, not so much with the X-H2s. But I should do a comparison of those too!
@@oxeneers Just watched, and as soon as you spoke about the 30mm macro.. 😁 Definitely would like to see that comparison 👍 and was wondering how the 30mm, 33 1.4, 56 1.2 WR/II would do as they were developed with this 40mp sensor in mind IIRC. Even the 150-600mm, being one of the newest - I haven't done a deep dive on these but I believe that resolves similar detail to the existing 100-400 (which was also close to the 70-300).
I've recently settled on getting into the Fuji X system (balancing size/weight/perf/value) and leaning toward X-H2 as I'm mainly about stills, though, if the H2S price gap was closer I'd probably tip toward that (fast readout & full-sensor 20+ ES bursts). Possibly even the X-T5, with those silver & black good looks and dials, if it shared the buffer size and/or EVF of the H2/S.
@@fusion-frosty I think between the X-H2 and X-T5, the X-H2 is the better camera unless you obsess over the dials. I hate the flip out screen but I've adjusted. The EVF alone is worth it - and I rarely used it because I hated the typical shitty EVF that's on most cameras. @@oxeneers Yeah X-H2 is clearly specced better, I'd already decided to go X-H2/S for those reasons (better EVF, buffer, comfy & stabler grip), I should've used parenthesis on the X-T5 comment: IF the X-T5 had the EVF and/or buffer I'd be tempted + I do like the tactile dials (or at least having 3 programmable 📐 dials as w/the Canon bodies I've used).
I certainly wouldn't mind X-H2S with it's silent, faster ES readout & un-cropped 20-40 FPS bursts either! But the H2 is a good base to start with I think, then maybe an H3/4/5 S down the line.. Now if they could add A7R V's all tilting, flipping & rotating screen too in future..

But definitely interested in some head-head detail comparisons of the 40mp vs. X-H2S (or X-T4 as I've seen elsewhere) using those new generation lenses 30 2.8, 33 1.4, 56 1.2 II. The recent Fujifilm USA workbench vid on the 33 2.8 macro states it's "designed to take advantage of that resolution as well as possible"

Yes you can see the difference, 40 mp are more pinsharp over 26/24mp. Even 8 k you can see the difference over 4k. Try and compare those modes over reality. Quite easely 8k are closer to reality. You need a large HD monitor to see it more clearly.
Agreed. I use an ASUS 4K ProArt display and it's very clear to me - and yet, many people in online Fujifilm circles say "There is no difference". Sorry, but like you said, there IS a difference. Thanks for your thoughts!!
@@oxeneers Especially in movies, when there are movements, the pixel transitions are just more smooth and natural in 8k.

Great comparison. In high contrast environments with strong lights and shadows, which one would you think have better dynamic range? The 40mb sensor or the stacked sensor?
