Storm Warning! Penzance to the Isles of Scilly with the RMV Scillonian III.

- Yet again, just one day before I was due to sail out to the Isles of Scilly I received ANOTHER 'weather advisory' email from the travel company stating that 'the weather forecast is indicating the likelihood of rough sea conditions, we would like to advise that sailings could be uncomfortable and are not suitable for those travelling on a day trip'. And guess what, I was travelling on a day trip ticket!
But I decided to go anyway - what was the worst that could happen!
Join me on this trip as I show you around the RMV Scillonian III, inside and out. I'll have breakfast, then we'll head outside to sample the views as we depart Penzance. It's certainly an interesting trip this one and I have to say, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be considering the 'email of doom' I'd had the day before!
And arriving into the Isles of Scilly, wow, what a beautiful place it is. My first time there and it certainly won't be my last.
Thanks as always guys for taking the time to watch my videos. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and it really encourages me to make more content for you all to enjoy.
Cheers for now.
Mark

I love your stuff, it’s always good but I don’t get why you put music on it, I saw once where a You Tuber said “ music is ok if your filming at a disco, otherwise leave it out as all your doing is fine filling it showing nothing” and it sometime fells like that, as I say your stuff is good but would even be better without tone filling waste of time stuff.9
Thanks David. Appr3ciate the feedback but tbh I don’t agree with whoever the RUclipsr was that said that. I have spent a lifetime in music (as a musician) and for me it plays a massive part in creating a scene PROVIDING it’s the right kind of music. And used thoughtfully (within not just the context of the video but at the right time as well), it’s a useful creative tool. Of course you and whoever it was that said that are entitled to your opinion, but I don’t agree with it and I certainly refute the claim that it’s used as ‘filler’. Furthermore, most people really appreciate the work that goes into the right kind of music. Best regards anyway 😊
Well you’re right it’s all about opinions.
When I see you on a motorway on a bus and the music comes on I know it will be the field at the side of the motorway, so I would say it gives no benefit to what has been a good video, hence the filler
If anyone else wants to have their say wrt the music, please add to this pinned post. Cheers 😊
I like the music, it breaks up the video nicely. Keep it up!
This is a remarkable travel report - this little known service is revealed to be a wonderful old fashioned sea "day trip".
Mark's easy style expertly shows the ship's features with a pleasing musical soundtrack - Excellent !
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it - I certainly did. 😊👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip ...i was on this ship years ago and just outside lands' end they did a air sea rescue exercise from RNAS Culdrose .....believe me it was scary. Thought they boat gonna capsize
Great video..! I did travel to the Scilly's on that same ship about 40 years ago but now I live on Cornwall (nr to Penzance), I've decided to pay a visit back there in the coming days and will be filming it too and doing some photography so hopefully the weather will hold..!
For a 47 year old vessel, it looks in really good shape. And I enjoyed the accompanying music. It was a really nice video, so I have subscribed.
Cheers Paul, thanks for another positive comment about the music and I appreciate the sub. Thanks 😊
I’m 67, but when in my early teens my parents and myself used to holiday in summer on St Agnes for a month. The horror of each holiday was the trip on the previous Scillonian. I was told the bottom of the boat was rounded as the port at St Mary’s was too shallow for ships with keels. This meant not only did the ship roll from side to side, it rolled up and down too. Within an hour I would be terribly seasick regardless of the sea conditions . After a couple of years my parents very kindly decided we’d travel by helicopter instead.
Hi, I've just subscribed to your channel after watching this beautiful video. You were certainly fortunate with sailing conditions considering the weather UK has been experiencing over the past week or more. I've been visiting Cornwall all of my life, especially the Penzance area. (My father born and bred there.) I'm glad you had the opportunity to visit Scilly. The islands are wonderful. If you get the chance to stay longer it is worth visiting Tresco, the second larges island after St Mary. As a young girl I sailed on Scillonian II with my Father, after that two or three more visits with my late husband and children on Scillonian III. Later on in life when the helicopter was the latest mode of transport, I travelled alone on that which was a wonderful experience.
I noticed someone commented on your back ground music saying it was "a waste of time" I strongly disagree. I think the music was most appropriate in its content and when it was played - soothing and relaxing. Thank you.
Hi, many thanks for the sub and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. My first time visiting this wonderful place and it certainly won’t be my last. A few hours isn’t really enough to do it justice but there’s a bit of a ‘taster’ on my next vid with a couple of the beaches and the flight back. And next time, yes definitely stay for a few days so I can properly explore and maybe visit one or two of the outlying isles. Absolutely gorgeous place. 😊
I remember in the 70`s there was a bar on the main deck. It must have been the Scillonian II. I was only a lad but remember seeing people drinking and merriment in the bar but up one deck people hanging over the side looking green in the rough sea`s. One of them my big Sister.
Best place in the rough is on deck with your eyes on the horizon if you can. It eases the mental imbalance. Done loads of rough stuff and it worked for me😁😁
Yes that works for me too Lawrence. 👍
At the stern outdoors works for me.
Lovely to see a video like this through 'new eyes' on Scilly and the Scillonian - been visiting the Islands since 1963. The crew of Scillonian III are just great - always feels very much a family atmosphere, the same faces year on year, and incredibly hard-working - they often have to do extra sailings to cover for when the planes are grounded due to bad weather. You don't show the original Scillonian at 11:10, its another shot of Scillonian II, but a mere detail in what is a very clear picture of your crossing!
Cheers Paul, thanks for the feedback. I got those photos off the Isles of Scilly travel website btw! But yes, really enjoyed my brief time there. I’ll definitely be back and hopefully sail on her again before she goes.
As a proud Scillonian, congratulations. Great Video, and you got our name correct. Scilly or the Isles of Scilly and NEVER the Scilly Isles.
The long rowing boats would be gig's. We hold the World Gig Racing Championships at St Mary's, this year May 3rd to 5th. It's a great weekend. A shame you didn't stay a few days and visited the outer Islands. Well worth the effort. The Gardens on Tresco are amazing, and there is great food to try in some great little pubs, especially with wonderful sea food. Yeah!
A funny story about this Graham. I was told by the drummer in our band about the naming convention so I was very conscious of it at all times! I believe the locals can get very upset about it so yep, did my homework on this one (for once). It did look a fantastic place though so I will be back one day and for much longer too. Cheers.
Nothing better than a wee ferry trip! 😊
Yeh I miss them
Thanks Sheila, definitely one trip I would recommend this😊👍
Brilliant....thank you so much for doing and showing this route. Is there a bar on board??? I don't know... Lol... 🙏
Not only that you can throw up over the side but not obviously into the wind😂😂
Yes, pick your side carefully if you’re going to do that 😂
As are your videos always - brilliant! I was at the launch of that ship, I lived near the shipyard at Appledore at the time. Sadly, she is coming to the end of her life, and even sadder - the IoS Steamship Co are looking at vile modern looking vessel from the far east to replace her. I am forecasting that will be long regretted. Appledore ships are known for being sound, that is why she is 47 years on the high sea!! High being the operative word for an infamously rough journey from Penzance to Hughtown. Keep the videos coming! John
Cheers John. Yes I totally agree, will be a sad day when she goes. Hopefully someone will get the benefit and she’s not scrapped.
Hi Mark...Liverpool Kev here again...Mentioned before that I am not out and about as much I would like these days... so just love being with you on your trips...whether an exotic ferry to the Scilly Isles or a bus from Liverpool to Birmingham...Thank you so much...have always loved your relaxed presentation style...loved your Penang trip...having been there myself a few years back...Take care...as ever Liverpool Kev
Cheers Kev, glad you enjoy it for these reasons. Makes it all the more worthwhile for me 😊
We always wondered what the trip on the ferry would be like so thanks very much for this video - from New Zealand!
Love your videos especially your journeys on boats and buses. Keep up the great content, watching your videos makes my day and brightens up my life 😊
That is great to hear, glad you enjoy the channel 😊
Excellent video. We've done that crossing in the height of summer and each time been blessed with stunning weather and calm blue seas. IOS holds a very special place in hearts as does the Scillonian.
Cheers, a bit grey to start with but I was surprised how quickly it improved. Like a different world it was 👍
A very nice looking ship. Unfortunately in a few years she will be probably replaced by something boxy, uncomfortable, with little or no open deck space and possibly less seaworthy, as it often happens these days. Surely many will miss her.
Visited Scilly isles in the 70's both return trips on the old British airways helicopter service from penzance. This video makes us want to return to this beautiful part of the world. Peter and Denise Noice in a breezy Suffolk
Cheers guys - an old BA helicopter service, wow that must’ve been worth doing (I’ll have to look up some archive footage of that on YT, sounds great). This was my first time and I’ll definitely be back 👍
Really enjoyed your video thank you !
Thoroughly enjoying all your trips, as a bus driver myself it is good to see the way other operators work. I hope you continue to travel around the UK and I look forward to your next Trip.
Cheers Billy. I’m certainly doing a lot more UK stuff this year mate. Hope you continue to stay tuned 😊👍
Great video mark,I did the trip in the eighties, big swell going out and lots seasick, coming back lovely crossing
It seems to me the weather can change pretty quickly. Glad you had one decent trip on it though! 👍
Another great trip Mark... and you have tempted me to look into doing this myself. As always an interesting commentary... so thank you. 😊
Cheers Wesley and I hope if you do do it, you’ll have as good a time as I did 😊👍
Another fantastic video, the isles look amazing
They are, I was certainly impressed and next vid will showcase a couple of the beaches 👍
Good informative video and like the music it helps. liked and subscribed
Cheers Andy, much appreciated mate 😊👍
Hi Mark a great video, I've watched virtually all of your videos this particular one the music made it after you explained about ship being replaced very surreal, i enjoy your travels, as a visually impaired person i find it interesting especially the logistics of the journeys, stay safe and well.
Hi Brian and many thanks for taking the time to comment. I enjoy putting the music on (where appropriate) so it’s good to get some positive feedback. Cheers 😊👍
A nice relatively calm crossing, I got thrown around like a dogs toy when I went.Cheers and thank you and stay well,
I was a bit worried when I got that email but it turned out alright in the end yes 👍
Penzance and surrounding area is such a great public transport hub with buses, coaches, trains, planes, helicopters , and shops/ferries. Have I missed anything ? Another great video. 👍👏
Probably not Rich, think you covered everything there and I’ve done most modes of transport apart from the helicopter! Next time eh 👍
Excellent review once again Mark, nice old ship, lucky with the weather in St Mary's to, I look forward to your return fight review, thanks bud, stay safe 👍
Cheers mate. Yep, weather turned out good in the end and the flight back was amazing!
Once when I did this beautiful trip, I saw several huge basking sharks off the side... I think it was in May. A sight never to forget. I have done the crossing three or four times and am yet to have a bad one... maybe that day will come! Great trip report, thanks, and glad you enjoyed it too.
Cheers Keith, that must’ve been an awesome sight. I never saw anything though I never looked that hard tbh. Flight back was great too 👍
great video why does that surprise me! The clouds at 10 .00 were stunning.thanks again
Cheers Kevin and thanks for watching mate 😊
Great video Mark. The Scilly Isles look like a fantastic place to visit especially in that weather.
It was pretty amazing - better than I was expecting for some reason. I’ll definitely be back 👍
The Isles of Scilly have been on my bucket list for years - I must get my act together and get there - it looks like heaven!
Yep, I was the same. Glad I made the effort as I’ll be back properly next time 👍
Great video Mark, glad it wasn't too rough for you. Stayed on Scilly Isles for a weeks holiday back in 2019, we flew from/to Lands End airport, a great experience & a great week on the Islands too. Boats are easy to use to get around, went to Tresco to see Abbey gardens, amongst the many things we did :)
I loved the flight back (next vid). Fantastic views, quick and easy. Ferry is obviously cheaper and I’m glad I tried both tbh. Might try the helicopter next!
Fabulous video, so jealous.. absolutely on the bucket list
Cheers Walter, it is sooo worth it mate. A long way for you but yep, definitely worth the effort.
Oh! That takes me right back to when my mum and I for a birthday adventure of mine! Let's put it this way! It was so rough that we were an hour late and when we tried to look at everything on the scilly isles it was all closed! You were very lucky! As we stood the whole way in a similar point to you, that is below the companionway up to the Bridge! I did go down and, let's just say! the aroma was disgusting and I came back up to mum and said stay up here! Yes the waves used to go half way up those portholes! I can vouch for that! LOL 🤣🤣😵💫
Yes I was extremely lucky with the weather considering the day before I’d had that email advising day trippers not to travel! I wonder how many didn’t bother? It was amazing how the skies improved as we got closer and my next video will be full of blue skies, a bit of an explore and a trip back on the Skybus. Need more time there though next visit 👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip This is what we both found but never did get back! sigh!!
Another one of your interesting videos, I really enjoyed it as ever. Never been to the Scilly Isles, but have heard how nice it is. Looking forward to your return trip, which no doubt will be worth watching as always. 😊
Just find a way to do so. It just has the most remarkable 'light' that you won't find anywhere else in the UK.
The sky and sea are more 'blue' than anywhere else, and the sand is really fine. Try to go for more than a day (a day trip is rather pointless as you won't get off St Marys). If you can get to one of the off-islands (St Agnes, St Martins, Bryer, Samson, or Tresco), your blood pressure will drop by twenty points.
You'll never visit the Scilly Isles as they don't exist! Scilly or the Isles of Scilly my lovely!
Thanks Diana, yes I definitely recommend a visit. Flying back gave me a few hours on St Mary’s so it was definitely worth doing it that way as a taster.
Hello. Well, what a lovely relaxing video, nice views, nice crossing, nice music. You did well for the weather. Hope you had a nice Easter. We're still converting our ex sainsbury home delivery van to camper. Getting on well. We haven't been to Scilly Isles but does look nice, may consider it. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Best wishes David and Beverley Norfolk
Cheers both. Well if you’ve never been I really do recommend it. I was the same but this will definitely not be my last visit. Only thing for me is I’d need a week really to explore everything. Good luck with the camper 👍
A fantastic video! And the Scillonian is perhaps the finest Ferry operating within the waters around the UK!
Thanks. Yes the Scillonian is a bit old now but loads of deck space, enough facilities on board and a fantastic crew. What more do you need 😊👍
Fantastic as always
Cheers David 😊
I've always wanted to know what it was like in the Scillonian. I've flown over but never sailed. Really pleased I saw this. Thank you
A pleasure Maggie! Hope it was useful and if you do try it, hope you get decent weather 😊👍
Great video. I sailed on it a while back with the wife. Had a great day trip. It was at a busier time of the year which meant more passengers and both cafe's being open on board. We really enjoyed the experience.
Cheers, I would be interested to see what it’s like when busy. I think I was lucky the weather actually turned out better than they forecast for the time of year!
Lovely video again Mark and thankfully the weather turned in your favour, allowing you to benefit from the sun's rays as you sat by the beach. The added bonus of the fine weather at this time of year was the lack of others making the crossing. This allowed you to more fully film both the ship itself and its interiors. A small ship like that being crowded would have hindered you from filming as you did.
I much prefer filming during the quieter months. Trade-off with the weather sometimes but you can have some really up crowded trips whatever your mode of transport.
Another great video. The ship certainly has character and I see the emergency signs still say muster station which I think has been updated on newer ships. I remember seeing the term first on North Sea Ferries back in the early 90’s and thinking it a bit odd. You did not make the faux par of calling them The Scilly Isles which does upset the locals 😉. I would like to visit at some point in the future.
Wow Stunning Beach Scenery n Horizon. 100%
Vid this week will have lots more scenery from the Isles 👍
Loved this one too, Mark! But I was left wanting for more - more about the Scilly Isles, the pubs, the restaurants the sights ... Never been to the Scilly Isles but have always been fascinated by them ever since I learned it was former PM Harold Wilson's favourite holiday spot. Can you please go back and film the SI in detail? What's life like there for the inhabitants? How do cars get there? Keep doing the good work but remember that many of us watchers like to know about the destination as much as the ride to/from. Onyer, dude. Paul in Oz.
Cheers Paul. Yes I think I might do that. A few hours on the main island isn’t enough really but there’s a bit of a taster in my next vid. The beaches in-particular are fantastic!
Excellent video Mark very entertaining, we did this trip 26 years ago unfortunately I was sick on the crossing…👍🏻
Oh no! Hope it didn’t put you off too much. The islands are worth the trip aren’t they. Absolutely stunning 👍
The long rowing boats are likely gigs - the Isles of Scilly stages the World Gig Rowing Championship annually. The cargo ship is pronounced Gree Maritha. Another name I have heard for the Scillonian is The Great White Stomach Pump. In addition to the ship and plane run by the same company, there is a helicopter service to the islands of Tresco and St Mary's - admittedly more expensive than the plane but it does fly out of Penzance (from just behind the big Sainsbury's you can see when coming into Penzance by train).
Whatever the name for the ship the Isles of Scilly are so much more about the destination than the travel.
Gigs - that was the name I was searching for, cheers. The flight back was great btw, think I’d prefer that to the helicopter tbh but either way I’ll definitely return. Beautiful place.
always enjoy your videos
Cheers Caleb and I appreciate your comments mate 😊
Looks like you had an enjoyable crossing there, Mark! Never done the ferry to the Isles; we (my parents and I) had a package deal back in 2007(?) of return helicopter flights from the then Penzance Heliport to Tresco, with 4 or 5 nights full board at the New Inn. I vaguely remember them providing packed lunches as well…such luxury!! We did get the small ferry that went around the various islands, to Hugh Town on Sr Mary’s
I might well try the helicopter next time as I’ll definitely be back. Probably do something similar as the other islands do warrant a look and a few nights accommodation by the sounds of it. Cheers Roddy 👍
Done this crossing some years ago. A very rare bird had been sighted on the Isles and the boat was packed out with twitchers. Great video.
Oh I bet it was! There were a few on this trip looking at someth8ng but I’m not an expert - could’ve been anything tbh!😂
Well that was a pleasant day trip ☺️ to the scilly Isles 1st time I watched your videos nice ferry ride 😊
Well thanks for watching. I really hope you enjoyed the content 😊
I certainly did 😊
Ah, the Isles of Scilly, the place where there's a football league that looks like every other football league, but, in fact, it has the record of most played matches between 2 football teams: Woolpack Wonderers & Gurrison Gunners. They're the only 2 football teams there and the only 2 football teams in its independent league from the English Premier League, and they're also independent from the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish ones
I have heard of the football match prt, maybe next time I go I’ll catch a game 👍
Great video, Mark. It looked relatively calm compared to a previous ferry video of yours 🤣 I like that you could take the ferry one way and then fly back. That's a great way to see the area, both on water and air. Awesome stuff. Andy.
Cheers Andy. Yes the flight back was just as good. Stay tuned for next upload mate - Skybus 👍
I'm looking forward to it.
great review and I think very good value to go somewhere quite different.
Cheers. It was - £100 inc the flight back is pretty good imho.
Thanks Mark…remember doing this in 2010 when it did two trips out and back due to the Gig Racing
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it.
😮 wow what a beautiful trip and place to go for a day out mark well done ✅ m8 for the 🎥 and prices peanuts I don't know if it is expensive to stay overnight I believe they have a great chippy there 2 Mark maybe next time 🤔 anyway my friend thanks for the 🎥 all the best John 😊😊😊
I will stay over next time John, there’s so much I want to see. Don’t think a day trip can do it justice but it was a nice taster 👍
Great video mark 😊
Thank you Emily 😊
Looks great will try the ferry and flight back.
You should 👍 flight back is on next upload btw so I hope that gives you a taste for it
Well Done switched to this n enjoyed. as its storms again on land Nice see Friendly staff on most train s none.
Cheers mate and thanks for watching 😊👍
Really interesting video im hoping to do the trip myself next spring. 😊
Cheers Neil. You should do mate, I definitely recommend it and if you’re more inclined to fly, I have a video on that coming out next 👍
Nice video! One of many places I'd love to visit but haven't yet!
Cheers mate, it was pretty gorgeous from what I saw! Need more time there tbh. Next time eh!
Went on honeymoon to the Isles of Scilly in 2015! Journey out the boat rocked so much a box of left over wedding cake went sliding across the floor towards an unsuspecting sleeping dog 😂. Journey home 2 weeks later it was ridiculously hot with lots of dolphins! During our visit we met the now King & Queen who had flown over by helicopter that day!
Bet the dog enjoyed that! Sounds like you had a good time overall though and when I go back, I’ll certainly be wanting to stay for longer too.
I've done this crossing twice never again lol would fly next time. Great video 😎👍
From the email I got, I thought it was going to be a lot worse! I did wonder if many ‘day trippers’ were put off by receiving that in the end and just took the refund.
Hi and thank you for your kind reply I enjoy all your videos. I wouldn't claim a refund I think to enjoy the scillies and appreciate them you should make the voyage on the boat unfortunately for me I was unwell coming back rather than going as it rocks more on the return journey rather than go up and down
If I took the boat again definitely be in the lower deck as I'm a coward 😂
Have you done Lundy? That's another nice trip on a traditional vessel
Love your videos mate see you next week for a. Brand new video 😄
Cheers Joshua and thanks for your support as always 😊
That below decks ''Vomitarium'' looks a horrendous place to be- I'd far rather be on deck, too.
The Isles of Scilly, would definitely love to see them some day and indeed they look lovely and wonder how windy can they be. By ferry would be ideally my choice, but even the Skybus looks appealing.
I got first told about the RMV title last december at the Titanic Experience in Belfast as I was doing a tour. Titanic and other White Star Line ships had the RM title (Royal Mail), but were RMS (Royal Mail Steamer)
I got a bit lucky with the weather in the end. They did say it’d brighten up too. The RMV title, now there are 3 remaining. Without looking it up, I reckon one of the others is the ship that goes down to Ascunsion maybe? No idea what the other one is?
Hi
Excellent video been a few time to scilly isles we shall be down in st Ives in June and shall booking a trip on Scillonian 👍
Thanks Phil. I hope you have as good a time as I had. Loved it! 👍
My favourite ferry was the Sally Line from Ramsgate to Ostend. The ships were so small the stabilisers on them, if they had them at all, meant even in the calmest of weather they bobbed up and down like a cork in a bottle of Beaujolais nouveau. If there was a storm, there were bodies everywhere where puking into anything they could. I went across in a force 9 one day, as I’m sitting there munching my fry-up, people were running in all directions as soon as they saw me, I think more people were carried off the boat on a stretcher than walked off. 🤣
Sally line yes I sailed with them once but going back a bit. Always thought it was a weird name for a ferry company. Seemed to be the cheapest going at the time though iirc.
Excellent 🥇🥇🥇🥇
Thanks Derisley 👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⚓️⚓️⚓️
OK got it now Sicily bottom west if Italy, Scilly bottom west of UK,
Thanks so much for the geography lesson.
Lol, no problem!
Very good video this is on my bucket list to do as I live in Cornwall and I have never been to the Isles of Scilly although I have been to Isle of Skye in Scotland on a day trip on a boat which was amazing and Ramsay Island in South Wales near Pembrokeshire which I visited there last year and it was similar to the Isles of Scilly. But I do have plans to go to the Isles of Scilly sometime with my mom as we like hiking so it is definitely on my bucket list. I will probably fly over with the DHC6 Twin Otter that Skybus use which I have recorded them on Al's Trainspotting HD and they look like really nice planes and sound epic. Skybus also does a flight from the Isles of Scilly to Exeter Airport which is about 1hour long as I have seen it on Flight Radar and ADSB Exchange which they are aircraft trackers.
Cheers Al. I definitely recommend the Isles of Scilly after this and btw, next vid is of the flight back which I hope you’ll be interested in. 😊👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip Yeah I'm hoping to visit the Isles of Scilly sometime in the future I'll try this summer in 2024 . I'll keep a eye on your channel for the Skybus experience 👍
Sounds like there may be a fast cat alternative summer only service coming from another operator. I used to have annual trips to the Scillys on the Sikorsky S61 choppers. In fact I was holidaying in St Mary’s the day SC111 made its maiden voyage back on 1977. Fantastic empty beaches with white sand and green seas. The locals tolerate the day trippers - ish.
Cheers Phil. Interesting, I was thinking how the ISSC have a monopoly on all this travel to and from the isles. And I bet tourism is a major earner, so they can’t really complain too much about the visitors can they!
The ship looks small from the outside, but very surprised how large and well planned the interior is 🚢
Yes it’s like a tardis inside and tbh, has everything you need for this length of crossing. Will be sadly missed when she goes I suspect.
Made the journey about 12 years ago in a September , but I remember it being incredibly choppy and I felt better sitting towards the upper deck rather than the lower areas as you touched on.
Interesting and I guess it is different for everyone. I’m just glad it wasn’t as rough as your trip sounded!
In the early sixties as a small child I lived on Tresco. The air bridge in those days was BEA DH Rapides, biplanes. A charming way to travel. I’ve always understood that the poor sea journeys were due to the Scillonian’s needing a shallow draft to enter St Mary’s harbour and hence being at the mercy of the waves! Having seen videos of Scottish Ferries I am rather of the mind that the Scottish Government works a little harder on providing transport to their offshore islands than the English one does. For me the real beauty of the place is getting to other islands, Tresco and Bryher in particular. Unfortunately the Island Hotel on Tresco is long gone, but the real tranquility of the islands, at least when the day trippers have gone home can be found on the other smaller islands. A video on the inter island boats would make fascinating content together with say a stay at the hotel near Bryher’s rather aptly named Hell’s Bay.
On yes of course the Scottish government is a shining example of overseeing ferries.....er.
@@johnrubber1144 do Scottish ferries provide passenger services in winter? Do Scottish Ferries get Government support are they effectively left to groups like the Isles of Scilly Steamship company to provide service?
I will definitely be back! Might try the helicopter next time and yes, like you said, head out to the outlying islands. I’d love to stay a few days 😊👍
Lovely video 👍⚓️
Thank you 😊
The nicest place I've ever been, by a long way. I went by Helicopter which was quick and convenient but sounded like being inside a washing machine on the spin cycle ! I think you would be better going for a week at least.
Yes Garry, definitely a week for me next time. Looks beautiful 👍
Brilliant video as always!; even though they said that was a bit rough, that is not rough or choppy compared to travelling across the Irish sea in a force 10 gale.
Didn't know they did the sail and fly packages.
You answered my question regarding WiFi as otherwise using your phone on some of the ferries gets expensive as the phone attaches itself to the maritime network which is expensive.
I believe the scillonian 4 has been ordered to be built at a shipyard abroad if I remember reading, cannot remember when it is due to go into service though, I'd say at least a good couple of years away.
Hope all is well, take care and have a good weekend. Will we be seeing more of your journey on the islands and your flight back to Lands End??
Cheers Peter. Yep, next vid will be a short walk to the airport (which deserves some coverage) and the flight itself and a singing taxi driver (I kid you not!). You won’t want to miss that one 😂
That's a short but rough sailing and one of two ferries on Earth, mind I suppose that they are all on Earth?!But who knows it's a big Galaxy!,I have been seasick on.The other being the long internal Scottish ferry from Lerwick to Aberdeen.
Oh yes Kevan I’ve been on a rough crossing on that Northlink service. Before I started doing this RUclips thing tbh so I will return to it at some point 👍
Nice looking tub that for its age,. Good job you never caught any dolphins as it’s probably illegal and frowned upon, lol,. Turned out nice in the end and fortunate you didn’t recycle that £10 breakfast,. Bargain @ £35 round trip, scilly isles never been on my radar but looks nice,. Are we going to see the plane trip back ? Hopefully better weather on the horizon for your future trips cheers,.
Cheers Mike. Yep enjoyed this trip out in the end (with the better weather) and the flight back was amazing. Out tonight 👍
Boat is known locally as “ The Great White Puking Machine” 😂
And I can see why. This trip was surprisingly fine considering the forecast and the email I’d had pre-trip!
Another brilliant video. A lovely looking vessel and you’re right, friendly and helpful crew really makes a difference. It adds to the whole experience. Looking forward to the next upload.
Cheers Tim. Thanks as always for commenting and next upload will be the flight back (plus a bit of walking around first!). It is a fantastic place 👍
Nice to see an old fashioned trip without all the hassles and delays and pointless bureaucracies of modern travel! However.....I'd still take the plane every time!
I flew back. It was a great flight actually but I’m glad I mixed it with the ship as the two together made for a memorable travel experience 👍
another excellent Video did you know the Isles of Scilly was the ex prime minister Harold Wilsons favourite holiday place and was buried on the Isle on his death !!
I spent nigh 20 years as a commercial fisherman. Looked pretty calm to me 😂😂😂😂
Isles of Scilly might have you as Ambassador for Scilly Tourism. Lovely time aboard. Thank you.
Cheers mate, free advertising for them I guess. I don’t mind, risk is I hate it and the service is rubbish but I’ve gotta say, absolutely superb crossing and St Mary’s is really nice from what I saw. I’ll definitely be back 👍
Like you I would rather be on deck and watch the horizon if I felt sick. They are right though to say the lower down the ship and mid ships are the places to be for less movement. I wonder if the ship has stabilisers? Anyway great video, I enjoyed watching it. Thank you
Cheers mate. Personal preference too I suppose. I guess if you’re a regular on the service, you don’t really miss anything being down in the lower saloon.
Flat Bottom Boat. Minimal draught. Sails across the confluence of three seas
In stormy weather.
!! 🌦️
Yep, all about he docking in St Mary’s I believe.
The new Scillonian IV and two new cargo ships are due to come in to service in March 2026. The new ferry will have an increased capacity of 600, can carry more cargo and will have better seakeeping. The three new vessels are being constructed by Piriou.
Nice one, thanks so much for the info.
Was that the captain talking to you on the Quay? Good customer service
Just a light swell then, I doubt that those tiny fiddles would have prevented one's meal sliding onto the deck if rough. Always liked lively crossings as the restaurants were empty, except one Channel crossing, after spending eight hours steaming up and down as too windy to enter Dover, a force 9 Westerly, when we did dock found a truck leaning on my coach, 5 smashed windows and damaged bodywork. We were the last ferry to depart Calais that morning. 30 minutes earlier and would have been able to dock.
That sounds horrendous Tony. Got to admit, I was a bit worried when I got that email and was relieved in the end how the weather changed. Certainly made it an enjoyable experience rather than a rough crossing (which I was grateful for).
Ah you got to ride the Scillonian! I didn’t 😢due to a similar weather warning. But I did make the flight! I’m not promoting the video here because I’m a good boy and following your channel guidelines 😜 - but I hope to do this ship before it’s retired someday!
I think watching your video Paul made me want to do it more! I definitely recommend the ferry but yeh, there’s a risk. This was my second attempt at it but so worth it 👍
Great video. Am hoping to make this trip later this month as we are on holiday in Cornwall. When I looked into it I thought you had about 4 hours on the island before the boat went back. One hour is definitely not enough time. Might do the sail-fly deal that you suggested am sure we will figure it out. Do you know if there is much to do on the island.
There is loads to do on the island Martin. Note on he video, the guy jokingly says something like ‘have a nice hour’ (or something like that) as I disembark. Tbh, even the 4 hours is nowhere near enough and I’d have liked to explored Old Town (which I didn’t have time to do). This weeks vid will feature the Skybus so have a look at that tomorrow if you can. It’s a great flight.
Hi Mark. Great video and I wondered if you had considered staying the night before you went as it looks like it would have been fun? Take care.
It was quite a bit more expensive to stay over but I’ll definitely be back and next time, probably a few days so I can have a proper look around.
The ship seems to be more spacious than first glances at its exterior may suggest - positively tardis like !
Yes, it was certainly small from the outside but felt much more spacious nice on board. Perfect for this trip but I bet it’s rammed in the summer!
Just another spring gale in Cornwall 😂
It was very ’changeable’ down there that’s for sure!
Hopefully going in a couple of weeks for our twice annually trip my wife sails and I fly but if looks like flying may be disrupted by weather i transfer to the ship though it has been rough at times
Have a great trip Philip and good luck if you’re on the ship 😊
