  • After spending a week on an Isles of Scilly holiday, I've put together a list of my top 10 activities and attractions and hope that if you're planning a trip yourself, this will be helpful, or maybe your just curious about these islands that still haven't been covered by Google Street View. Throughout our trip, we visited: Gugh, Annet isles of Scilly, Tresco island, including the Tresco Abbey Garden, the Ruin Beach Café Tresco, Porthcressa Beach, Samson isles of Scilly, Porth Hellick, a Will Wagstaff Bryher tour, visited St Agnes Isles of Scilly, watched an evening Isles of Scilly Women's Gig race, Bryher Island including Rushy Bay Bryher, Bishop Rock Isles of Scilly, Troytown Farm for it's delicious ice cream, the Garrison Walls Isles of Scilly, the Scilly Farmers and Growers Market, we spent a day cycling St Marys Isles of Scilly where we went out Peninnis Head, checked out the Porth Hellick bird hide and went as far as Pelistry Beach for a chilled out lunch. We arrived by flying to Isles of Scilly using the Isles of Scilly Skybus and enjoyed getting around with the St. Mary's Boatmen's association or on foot. I hope this video can either help you with the planning of your own Isles of Scilly holiday or maybe give you a glimpse into these still slightly unknown islands as the likes of Google Street view have still not made their way onto these islands!

I've you're here because you're curious about the islands - what in the video caught your eye? If you've been before, is there anything else you think I missed off the list?

I always enjoy your amazing and also educational videos from The Isles of Scilly 🫶🏻 If I would want one thing more in this video, it would be to mention the artists and the galleries. Personally I know about 2 galleries on Bryher and at least one on St. Mary's, but I am sure there are more. And if you like alcoholic beverages - they make gin both on St. Agnes and St. Mary's and they are exquisit. There are also vineyards on St. Mary's and St. Martin's. And possibly on other islands too 😄 But great video anyway 🤩

Thank you Torunn. Since my visit, I've seen so many beautiful works of art having been posted on the Isles of Scilly noticeboard Facebook group, I just hadn't realised there was so much there. I guess it's the curse of visiting in a week blessed with such gorgeous weather, we were trying to stay outside as much as possible to make the most of the weather! I'm not much of a drinker which is why the gin and vineyards didn't make it into the Top 10. I spotted the vineyards on St. Martin's and St. Mary's so tried to include these in the vlogs for those islands as I appreciate people often watch these videos when planning their own trip and to know they're there will e helpful. Unfortunately I didn't spot the gin establishments. So pleased you're enjoying my videos!

@@WhenAdventureKnox It is impossible to experience everything in just one week - and especially in good weather as you say 😄 You are making great videos. These two things are just something that I liked to see myself - in addition to what you showed. I saw the vineyards in other videos of yours. The gin distillery in Old Town, St Mary’s is called Island Gin and the one on St. Agnes is Westward Farm Gin.

Luckily I grew up on St Mary's my father was the dentist for 16 years on the Islands...
I hope you got to spend a night in the Mermaid...
    Many happy memories 🙏
I hope you had a wonderful time.
At the begining of your video directly behind you on Porth cressa beach, the White House at the end of the beach in the foreground on the left-hand side was where I grew up before we moved to a bungalow outside the hospital where my father had his surgery.
Before that his surgery was in The White House behind you, it was magnificent in the winter seeing the storms coming in over Porth cressa.
    Magnificent views from that house.
I hope you have a lovely Christmas, take care.

Another great video Caroline, many thanks. I think you've definitely covered most of the best things Scilly has to offer. I would definitely add the Scillonian trip (as long as it's calm and a clear day), it's fantastic passing the coast of Penwith, seeing dolphins, gannets etc, passing Longships and Wolf Rock, and then seeing the islands appear on the horizon. I'd definitely recommend walking round each of the islands and seeing the contrasts between the amazing beaches and the rugged cliffs. I just love the "feel" of the islands too. I live in Cornwall, but Scilly feels like it's in a mini world of its own, it's really special.

100% agree with you about Scilly feeling like a world of its own. On first glance it may seem like the landscapes are just like the mainland, but it doesn't take long to realise it's actually quite different. Your description of the Scillonian in calm weather is making me regret having gone to the bottom of the ship to sleep as I'd have loved to spot dolphins and other animals!

I'd heard of the islands man years ago, but didn't know much about them other than them being off the coast of the mainland Cornwall. It was during lockdowns and the realisation I'd need to do more domestic travel did I start researching the UK and the islands got onto my radar. Initially when planning our Devon and Cornwall trip last summer, suggestions of things to do were to take a day trip here, but I quickly realised it needed a holiday all of its own! If you ever get the chance to visit, I'd highly recommend it! Cheers

Nice to look back at your trip, you really did cover a lot of ground during your stay! I'm pleased you ranked the beaches so highly in your top 10, they really were magnificent. The honesty boxes and non-existent crime rate still amazes me, it's nice when you don't have to worry about those things. Knowing your bicycle will be there when you return is a weight off your mind, especially when it's unlocked!

I liked to cram lots in when we travel. In the early days of my travels, I met a couple whose motto was 'sleep when you're dead', and whilst I don't take it quite literally and will enjoy lie in's back at home where I've not forked out for flights, accommodations etc. I always want to get the most for the money spent! I still can't quite get over the honesty of this place and love the elements like the honesty boxes. Such a magical place!

Thanks so much for your series of videos on the Isles of Scilly. They are both interesting and fun. I'm a total Kernowphile and while I've been to the Cornish mainland, the islands are very much on my bucket list but it's a very long way from where I live in Scotland!
I have an unusual question for you - are there any signs in Cornish or any other visibility of the Cornish language in Scilly? I speak Scottish Gaelic and am really interested in Cornish - Kernewek too. There's a lot of signage in Cornish in the mainland so I was wondering if the island council has done anything. Thanks!

Awesome that you are up in Scotland... stunning place. I travelled there early in my RUclipsing days! I'm afraid I don't recall seeing any signs in Cornish... but it doesn't mean there definitely aren't any. I visited the mainland the summer prior and like you say, I remember seeing signs then.

No mention of Tresco? The most popular of the isles

    • @WhenAdventureKnox

Hi Sam. I tried not to go down the route of favourite islands/destinations as I realised I wouldn't be able to get 10 that way as I've only stepped foot on 6 of them and done a boat tour around another 2. But Tresco was one of my favourites and I remember the person at the helicopter company being very surprised by this. Lots of footage from the video is of Tresco, and I especially loved the Ruin Beach cafe, the squirrels, pheasant and gardens in general!

@@WhenAdventureKnox Great video! I knew the photos, but why would the clerk be surprised? Tresco is by far and away the most stunningly attractive of the Isles imo. There is simply no competition 🙄

What month did you visit the Isles of Scilly, and are the hotels reasonably priced?

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  Год назад +1

Hi Mark, sorry for the late reply, things have been vert hectic of late. We visited in May half term (last few days of May and first few of June) so naturally accommodation was slim pickings due to the peak school holidays. We stayed in an apartment that was £100 per night and it certainly felt expensive for what the apartment was - but appreciate it's more about the location. I understand there's a choice from high end like the Star Castle Hotel, through to even a backpackers hostel with private rooms as well as dorms on St. Mary's, and of course camping too. But as a general rule, the accommodation felt more expensive than other parts of the UK, but it's because of where it is - worth it for the beauty of the islands.

The Eastern Isles also have resident seals - I'm dying to go on the seal-snorkelling trip from St Martins to swim with them. They're completely tame underwater and come up to be petted.

We really ummed and ahhed over whether to do the snorkelling with seals trip as our previous holiday had been to Jordan where we did a snorkelling trip from a boat, and we both became very sea sick and felt like it was a lot of money wasted in the end - which was a real shame! I don't think enough time had passed between the 2 trips for us to be ready to try again - but maybe an activity for our next trip as it does sound wonderful!

Fabulous, and I've been there many times, the last time was about 10 years ago. Tell me, is the Sikorsky helicopter flying again from Penzance ? I remember it was scrapped years ago just leaving the Skybus from Newquay Airport, or the Scillionian ship ( no thanks! ) as the only options. Thanks! 🥰😊
