Jenna Ortega learned how to play the cello for 8 months to get in the iconic role. Which tells you that her fingers on the bow & strings are indeed real. That's *Impressive Talent.* 🎻
I made a few calls and found out that Tim Burton got Ölveti Mátyás, a Hungarian classical cellist. to record most of the song, computer generated the rest, and then combined the two for a fantastic piece. To have Jenna take lessons on the cello, so that she could realistically show the mostly correct fingering positions, was a stroke of genius. Yes, Jenna can play the cello, as any beginner can play but, no, she did not record the piece you hear in the show. Still, the combination of Mátyás' playing, with computer generation added, and Jenna handling the cello as well as she does makes this a memorable and impressive piece.
This is a more believable explanation. Thanks for the research. As someone who is from a family of musicians- it was a very hard sell for anyone to say this was "just" her after 8 months of picking up the cello. Just no. Lol.
49 years old and binged this in a weekend. One of my favorite Burton works ever and Ortega just nailed everything about Wednesday and added so much flavor.
One imagined that we all had heard all great versions of Paint It Black by now. Then this show comes along & gives us one of the best versions of it ever made!
Paint it Black is an absolute classic, but this quickly became my favorite version of the song! And the fact that Jenna actually had to learn Cello for it? Even better.
I’m an old man and grew up with the original and I’ve seen most of the remakes and this by far is the most bodacious version. Love it… may there be many more.
The facts that she went to fencing classes, cello classes, german classes, did some of her own stunts and allowed her own hair to be cut and dyed show that she was passionate about the role. It shows in the final product. Which is still refreshing to see, after so many actors/actresses or showrunners nowadays openly express their lack of interest in the roles they are playing or the stories they are adapting. And I am glad to see that a not-so-perfect show with a passionate lead and talented director does better than even multi-million-dollar shows with zero passion.
It took me a while to recognize this song until I started thinking about Westworld. This was an amazing series that I loved so much. Jenna Ortega gave a fantastic performance as Wednesday which is probably my 2nd favorite just behind Melissa Hunter.

Since Edward Scissorhands, I felt Burton had lost what captured his unique perspective in the cinematic realm. Yet, when I look at the still of Wednesday holding this instrument, it feels like he has brought his magic back.
Per multiple interviews - while Jenna _DID_ learn to play the cello - this is not her playing that you're hearing. Largely because what she played in person during filming wasn't "Paint it Black"! It was a Bach number. The editors did do an amazing job matching segments of her playing Bach to match up to the rhythm of Paint it Black, though.
Whenever I hear this piece I am mesmerized. I could listen to a 100 hour soundtrack of this for 100 hours straight. This by far is the best instrumental I have ever heard. I am a pretty big Rolling Stones fan and anytime I hear the song paint it black I immediately think of Wednesday Addams. Even though I am not a Rolling Stones member it humbles me to know that this song was done so flawlessly for the series. This easily is the best scene in the entire series and makes the series
Looking forward to seeing her in other efforts. Physiognomy paradise (great casting) - what a wonderfully complex face. A whole story in the visual alone. Petulant and sexy. Needing love but unable to express it easily. Having so much to share but so few to share it with. Truly righteous, and walking alone as opposed to walking with others in the wrong/clueless direction. Striving for impeccability in a world of mediocrity. Reminds me of Tatiana Maslany and Orphan Black. My fav series (so far) - you go girl!
