I love seals. theyre so clumsy and adorably cute
"shy seals who avoid any contact with humans" but all I can think of is that video with the adorable seal getting pets from the fishermen.
"virtual ball of fat" LMAO
What beautiful animals. So furry and plump! 💘 them!
"By the end of April, she's four times fatter - and wearing a sparkling grey coat." Me.
EVERY April? Haha
Funniest comment ever.

bro it’s april
@@wachowski9525 How old are you lad ?
I first leaned about Baikal on Planet Earth but this has taught me so much more. These freshwater seals and the sponges and crustaceans make Baikal more like a freshwater ocean than a giant alpine lake. The seals are adorable. I thought it was cute how they named that one Baikal Seal pup Nadia.
I want those seals in lake superior
I wished they had named her " Shit monger." That would've been a good name, also. Maybe next time .
A seal is my favourite animal!
Cheers Simi 👍🏻
Referencing their claws: "these enable the virtual balls of fat to haul themselves across the ice at speed"
A beautiful lake. They didn't mention anything pollution levels in the lake. Let's hope it is low and stays low.
They're starting to clean it up since the last 6 years.
@[S]-Rachel Ouellette More than one paper mill exists there, though. The biggest problem though is global warming. If temperature there keeps rising these seals will find it tougher to survive.
@j They should house some of those seals in lake superior, be a great environment for them and they wouldn't hurt the ecosystem like other "introduced" species.
@@Adamz678 No, only Russia can get exclusive freshwater seal.
@@diesirae8954 For a better chance of the species survival, I'd think it would be a good idea.
forced to eat cement when he was 6
This was beautiful.. always wondered how they survived the ice..sad though they are hunted by permit .. amazing animals ty for this film!
Perfect animal to be called a nerpa. A derpy animal like a seal
I don’t know if you care, but the russian word ”nerpa” is actually a loan word from my language. We Livvi people are the indigenous people of Lake Ladoga (the biggest lake in Europe where my grandparents lived, we used to hunt the seal before the industrialisation and mass exploitation of the area which almost made the species go extinct) and we have an freshwater ringed seal species that has been isolated for almost 10 thousand years and we call it ”njuorpu/njorpu”. That’s were Russian ”nerpa” comes from. Finnish people also call their isolated freshwater ringed seal ”norppa” and both the seal and the word are related, since Ladoga and Saimaa are connected by the Vuokša/Vuoksi river and we both are Finnic people..
@@0mgskillz96 I love learning about Finnish and native Siberian languages! They sound so beautiful to me.
Fresh water seals- very interesting!

There are other locations where freshwater seals exist; A few in Finland, The Saimaa ringed seal (Finnish: Saimaannorppa) is a subspecies of ringed seal (Pusa hispida). They are among the most endangered seals in the world, having a total population of only about 380 individuals.[2] The only existing population of these seals is found in Lake Saimaa, Finland (hence the name). They have lived in complete isolation from other ringed seal species for around 9,500 years and have diverged into a morphologically and ecologically different subspecies of ringed seal[3]. The population is descended from ringed seals that were separated from the rest when the land rose after the last ice age. This seal, along with the Ladoga seal and the Baikal seal, is one of the few living freshwater seals.
ralph tuttila they are the only exclusively fresh water seals
@@isa-cq4gk
True!
These are the only Fresh water seals on the planet, you can search it up on the internet.
Dude, if you want to copy from Wikipedia, at least remember to delete the citation numbers first
Did anyone else notice he said these seals grow 6 feet long and weigh 340 pounds? He must be talking about a completely different species from the ocean. These are tiny seals.
They split from arctic ring seal and are a close relative to the caspian seal the only other land locked seal. It’s believed they are smaller do to a similar effect as island dwarfism.
Yes, I figured that because the lake species is smallest species in world only half that size. Overall the documentary was very good and informative so I was surprised they messed this up.
And they can hold their breath for 45 minutes. Orcas, which have a larger lung volume due to being bigger and are better adapted to living under water than seals, can only hold their breath for 15 minutes.
Yes, I heard about these seals. It is good to hear more about this area...
Thank you so much for this video ! I love seals
Totally awesome video film
Captivating stuff....Again...no animal is safe though.....
very cute animals
Great video. Thank you Wild Things!
You do know that Wild Things didn't produce these programs, right?
Wonderful. :)
I couldnt kill one of those cute little things
I could never 😥
Its unforgivable to kill cute seal, no matter why
I would kill whoever tried to kill them
Saw them last June Great place
they recorded a hunter killing a seal and did absolutely nothing about it
sir coolguy I’m guessing from the word cull and them being described as “official hunters” it’s something to maintain seal populations from becoming too high or to allow to fur market to profit in an organised and more sustainable way however I couldn’t say for certain. Either way as far as i am aware the seals aren’t endangered or protected and the hunters need money at the end of the day so they have no real justification to stop them.
Don’t be so dense child
sir coolguy
Good probably because they are vicious predators that need to be kept in check, losers
It said he was doing it legally and officially, so...even if they disagreed with what he was doing, they couldn't really stop him? They're a documentary crew from a totally different country, not the Siberian wildlife police.
I agree whit you
Wayyyy too much time spent on the native hunters. Who cares about them? I don't want to know about their lives, I'm here for the weird seals.
I care. I find their lives interesting as well.
They need fibsh
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I came for the seals, but man, there’s some other strange organisms in lake Bikal I had no idea existed!
It would be cool to introduce these seals into the Great Lakes.
That would be interesting...its a niche left largely unfilled in the region, closest would be otters. Other than humans I feel like theres a lack of predators, especially in Michigan, Erie, and Ontario. Maybe black bears?
@@AgamemnonVsSocratesAandS The Great Lakes already have invasives that were brought over in ballast water from the Black Sea, like zebra and quagga mussels as well as the round goby fish.
@@theebigda ya...I just dont think more invasive species is a good idea. Still an interesting thought though! Maybe if seals were in the lakes in recent history and reintroduced, sorta like how a lot of eastern states from Illinois east want to reintroduce elk, bear, bison, and cougar
@@AgamemnonVsSocratesAandS Yup. They reintroduced elk in Wisconsin.
Looks like it's time for another round of invasive species... again

heccin' sea doggos !
Not gonna bother fact checking the whole thing, but if nothing else, although they got the width about right, it's 395 miles long, not 80. Minor mistake.
Why cull the seals? What do they do with the kills?
Probably sell it in small towns or feed their families.
The pelts are worth money, obviously. They are in no danger of extinction at the moment, but the quotas are set a bit higher than I'd like.
emtplacebo eat them dumb ass. Wtf the Siberian people have a culture to respect a lot more than social justice. Wow democrats are dumb
